Rising Tension
Guess what. I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho. I just own Serenity. Copying my stuff won't be tolorated!
"Pretty little thing, aren't you?" the demon asked mockingly.
I smirked.
"Oh, you're even cuter when you do that. Why don't you just come with me?" He walked even closer.
"Sorry, you'll have to kill me first."
"A fight then, 'Cutie'?" Cutie? He was pushing it!
"You obviously do not know who you are messing with!" I drew my mother's katana. This was my pride and joy. I moved faster than he could follow and cut him in two, clean-cut pieces. I resheathed my sword underneath the navy blue cloak I had stolen shortly after leaving. I brushed a few strands of stray blue hair out of my face. Though my hair was black, the three strands that hung in my face were bright blue. I felt better after that. I inhaled deeply and sighed it out when I heard something in the bushes behind me. An old woman appeared and bowed to me.
"You are Serenity-san, correct?" she asked.
"Who is is asking?" I replied.
"I thought so. My name is Akira, and I have an offer to make you."
"Continue." I was growing impatient with the hag.
"Do you wish to change your life? Do you hate it that much?"
"Somewhat." I stated matter-of-factly.
"Then, I will help you."
"Why are you doing favors for me?" I was scowling now.
"Your mother was a good friend of mine. I promised to help you."
"And what will you do for me?"
"I can change you." She fished in her pocket and took out something. She held up the jewel. "Come with me so I can explain." I obeyed quite reluctantly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurama was walking home after school, wind teasing and playing with his hair, and snow blowing everywhere. He turned a corner when something slammed into him and made him stagger backwards a few steps.
"Oh, sorry. I was just in a hurry." the girl explained.
"No, I wasn't watching where I was going." Kurama offered his hand down and got his first glance at the girl. He helped her to her feet and looked at her. She had blonde hair down to her waist and bright blue and green eyes. She was wearing a simple pair of blue jeans and a sweatshirt, looking about his age, but he could tell she was older. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine." She held her forehead for a moment.
"Is something wrong?"
"No, just a headache. And you are....?"
"Minamino Suiichi."
"My name is Yamamoto Natsu." She paused, and Kurama gave one of his perfect smiles.
"Would you like me to walk you home?"
'Geez, I just met him, but he's being so....nice.' she thought and smiled. "I see no harm in it." And they walked off to her apartment, lost in conversation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stayed up late again. The Ningenkai wasn't as active as the Makai. Therefore, I didn't do as much and wasn't as tired at the end of my day. The old woman didn't do a half-bad job. I turned around, looking at myself in the mirror. I looked downright weird with blonde hair. The old woman promised to meet me in two months. She wanted to know if I would stay human or turn back to my semi-demon form. I got some relief from the human, though. Every full moon, I would go back to my normal look for a night. At least, that's what she told me.
Then, there was that Suiichi that I met a about a week back. I sat down on my bed and was slowly leaning back and falling asleep when I heard something outside. My eyes opened just as the window shattered into pieces on my floor.
"I haven't had human in a while?" Do the demons ever stop?! He turned to me, showing his glaring eyes, teeth, horns-the demon things. "Just hold still and I promise I'll make it quick." Figures. I ran for the door and ran out into the hallways of the building. The damn demon followed. "Just slow down." he coaxed.
'When hell freezes over.' I thought. I finally got outside, not that it was a good thing to be freezing in my jeans and t-shirt. Running like the flames of hell were at my heels, I made it to the park.
"Hold it right there!" I heard a voice that wasn't the demon's, but no way was I going to stop. I didn't have acess to my energy, and I didn't think to grab my katana. How nice.... "Spirit Gun!" There was a ball of energy, and the demon behind me went down. I slowed down, but kept a straight line to get out of the park. I could see the gate clearly just before a group of lower-class demons came out in front of me.
"That's it. Can't you just leave me alone? It's really annoying." I told them.
"It's a ningen girl! It's been too long since we've had ningen."
"Pests. Come on, I dare you. Push your luck, because I am in a reall bad mood today. Killing all of you should give a little stress relief." Then, they surrounded me. Did they really think that would do them any good? I heard sound of someone else fighting behind me as the demon lunged all at once.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Hiei POV)
It just looked like a pile of demons at first. But as they were beat off one by one, I noticed someone was underneath. So, they had found themselves a human 'snack'. As about 2/3 of them were off, I also noticed it was a girl. After throwing the last one into a tree, she regained her composure and began to stare at me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was staring, but I couldn't stop. I finally turned away and looked to the other side of the park. There were very few things in life that scared me. He was one of them. Thank gods the old woman got rid of my scar in this form. He would have known it was me instantly. I knew him. He hadn't changed at all.
"Natsu!" Now what? I turned to see Suiichi running up to me. "Are you alright?"
"Peachy, never been better." I answered sarcasticly.
"Wait here."
"I'd rather not." I stuffed my hands into my pockets and turned away. My father appeared in front of me. Thank gods, he still didn't know it was me. Probably because I haven't sworn yet. I always used to swear.
"I insist." he said, uncovering his Jagan. I would never get used to that. I found it....odd. He couldn't erase my memory! To do that, he'd see my earlier memories! I instinctivly balled my fist and backhanded his forehead. He backed up a few steps and muttered curses at me. Well, if I wanted to piss him off, that was the best way to do it.
"Like I said, I'd rather not." Suiichi put a hand on my shoulder to keep me from leaving.
"Who are you?" he asked firmly.
"No one important."
"I think you should come with us."
And before I knew it, I was in Reikai. I wasn't sure why I followed them, but I did. They stood outside the door, waiting for me and the Reikai prince to finish our talk.
"I know about you situation." he began.
"Of course you do. You know about every soul---living and dead." I responded, completely deadpan.
"And you have recently made your home in the Ningenkai, correct?"
"If your going to ask the obvious this is going to take a really long time." I scowled and sat back in the chair.
"Why? Why would you come to the Ningenkai?"
"Because my life sucks and I was looking into starting a new one."
"Who changed your appearance?"
"A friend of my mother's. Are you satisfied yet?"
"No. Demon's are not alowd to be in the Ningenkai."
"What's your point? Besides, I'm not staying. The old woman only gave me a month."
"Okay, I'll let you stay in the Ningenkai for one month, but that's all!" Koenma paused. "You didn't have to practiclly blind Hiei's Jagan, you know."
"About that, tell anyone who I am, and I'll kill you with my bare hands." I stood up and started for the door.
"Where are you going now?"
"To....visit someone." A bit of remorse and sadness passed over my face. I exited quickly and ran past the four standing outside. "Got to go! Bye!" I said quickly. Again, my father blocked my path. "What is your frinkin' problem?! Stay the hell away from me!"
"I can't read your mind, and there is something wrong with that." he began. "Is there something you'd like to share with the rest of us? Maybe your records aren't as clean as they seem."
"I could say the same damn thing about you!" I snapped. He seemed taken back and shocked.
"Shout your damn mouth!"
"Stop it! You and your stupid corner!" I walked around him and out left the Reikai with that.
~~~~~~~~~~
Hiei POV
My corner? How the hell would a ningen know?! I must be by pure luck that they guessed. Serenity couldn't have survived. She died a long time ago, and she was the first and only one to say anything like that. 10 minutes and I already hate her, whoever the hell she is. She knows something, and dammit, I'll find out what she's hiding.
~~~~~~~~~~
Natsu kept walking faster and faster. Tonight was the full moon, and she wanted to get to the Makai before she went back to her normal look. She went into a sprint, noticing the sun's position.
"Damn! Could I be any slower?! Damn it!" She swore out loud and ran faster.
"Natsu!" Kurama yelled from behind her.
"Not now, Suiichi!" She rounded a corner into the park. "This is where I should go."
~~~~~~~~~~
'Where did she go?! She couldn't have gotten so far!' Hiei hit himself mentally for losing Natsu.
"Hiei!" He turned his gaze to the ground, where Kurama stood.
"What now?"
"Natsu is in danger. Koenma said that shortly after we left, he got word of a demon that is tracking her down."
"Where is the brat?"
"Natsu went into the Makai."
~~~~~~~~~~
"Aren't you special? You're still alive, and daddy's not around to protect you."
"Never was, never will be." Natsu answered. 'Just three more minutes. I have to hold out for three minutes so the moon will be up.'
"Oh, that's just too bad." the demon shook his head. "I know all about your plans with the old woman, and you won't live long enough to have a chance of winning." He disappeared with speed and began to circle her.
"I may be human, but I'm not that slow." Her senses perked. 'I'm walking on eggshells now. I can feel all four of them coming this way.' She closed her eyes and concentrated on the demon.
"Shi ne!" She turned and caught his blade in her hands and held on. "What the? But your still human! Human's can't do that!" He paused and stared at the Natsu-turned-Serenity. "You're back?!
"No shit." She pushed him backwards and smirked. "Surprise, surprise. I'm back."
"Damn you...." The demon took off running at quite a slow pace.
"I finally figured out something that I have in common with my father--neither of us will tolorate weakness." She drew her katana and threw it, piercing the demon. "And that's all she wrote. Guess I should get going with the lot of the Reikai Tantei on my trail and all." She walked up to the demon and retrieved her katana. "If I never see them again, it'll be too soon. I've already broken my promise, even if it may have be by accident."
~~~~~~~~~
"I'm leaving." I said, small travel bag in hand. "I think I understand you, but probably not."
He just sat, listening to me. I couldn't tell if he could hear me. Maybe he drank too much and wasn't listening at all.
"Though it's not my place to say, I don't think you should stay here and waste your life. And maybe you don't quite understand me. You're not the only one who loved her, you know." I paused, still wondering he heard a word I had said. "I promise not to come back or get in your way. I'll just let you be." And I left with that, leaving a single teargem on the floor.
~~~~~~~~~
I laughed lightly to myself. "Looks like I've only been remebering the bad. Mother wouldn't aprove." I paused, searching for the four. They were close, so I ran. If I ran, all my troubles were left behind me. I wouldn't stop until morning.
~~~~~~~~~
"So, the girl does have feelings. I know just how to get them back. The whole family--well, what's left of it." The demon jumped from tree to tree in pursuit.
A faint scream.....a gasp.....and a bright light.....
