Disclaimer: If YYH ruled the world, we would all be in trouble. Luckily, the government has stepped in and decided to make fangirls and boys like me put disclaimers on everything so we don't all say we own it. Which we don't. I mentioned that already. You get the point!

Chapter 4: Hell Hath No Fury Like Angels

Hiei stared at the Guardian. She had to be kidding.

“Demon? No way!” Yusuke laughed. An angel who was part demon. That was an oxymoron in itself.

“Yeah, she's half demon, half angel. Half Celestial Angel, which is why I'm here. The Elders are getting impatient and want her back in the Castle.” Hitomi stated matter of factly. Kurama stood up angrily, glaring at the Guardian who thought she could just come in to the Temple and take away Satu without a fight.

“I'm afraid you cannot do that.” Kurama growled, the hint of Youko glowing in his eyes. Hitomi looked at the kitsune and softened her gaze.

“You think I want to TAKE her back? No. I want her to keep running. I want you to keep fighting for her. There is more to her than you know, and if there is a way I can hide her, I will do it for how ever long it takes. So back down Fox! You know nothing about my duties!” Hitomi stood angrily and both she and Kurama glared at each other. Genkai shook her head; two people wanting the same thing and fighting against each other never worked out well.

“We will keep her safe. She is more than welcome to stay with us. But we need to know more than what we've been told.” Genkai added to the conversation. Kurama sat down, trying to hide his embaressment at his over-reacting to the stranger's presence and supposed threats. He looked away and into the distance. Hitomi also sat down, crossed her arms and looked at Genkai, trying to avoid the overly-emotional kitsune.

“Some information is better left unsaid Master Genkai.” Botan added. Hitomi looked at the blue-haired girl. She had seen the girl snooping around the Prince's private library, probably getting the Angel History book for the Detectives.

“Agreed.” Hitomi replied. Hiei looked at the stranger and then around the room at the rest of the Tante.

“What kind of Demon?” Hiei asked.

“It is unknown who Ren had the child with. She refused to tell anyone and if she did, they are surely dead or not willing to talk. It was presumed for a long time that it was a fire demon, as she was caught wandering with a pack of them.” Hitomi said matter of factly. Kurama thought about Satu did sort of remind him of Hiei.

{Oh god….}

{Fox?}

{Nothing Hiei, nothing…}

“Hitomi!!! Thaaaaaanks!” Satu cried as she entered back into the temple with a suitcase in her arms. It was packed with some of Satu's personals and clothes. The white haired girl smiled and Hitomi felt her heart lighten a bit. She stood to talk to her friend.

“How about we go outside to talk for a minute? Is that okay Satu?” Hitomi asked and Satu nodded. The two girls walked outside and around the corner of the temple until Hitomi was sure that they were out of ear shot.

“Satu, I've instructed the Tante to take care of you. I might not be able to see you for a while, mmmkay?? Do you understand me Satu? They are going to know something is up if I keep asking to go into your room or ask to see your personal belongings. Especially if they notice that a lot of them are missing.” Hitomi pulled the younger girl closer. She held Satu in her arms and felt Satu's tears sting against her human skin. It was painful to protect the girl and her secret for her entire life and now possibly have to risk never seeing her again. Satu clung to the older girl and breathed in the familiar scent. Suddenly she remembered where she had smelt that scent before. It was the cloak. Hitomi had the same scent of protection that other boy's cloak did.

“Can't I go back Hitomi? I'll be good!” Satu cried, tears dripping down her cheeks. Hitomi wiped them away and pulled the girls face upwards so she could look down at her. For as long as she could remember, Hitomi had thought of Satu as a daughter, sometimes a sister, and always a best friend.

“You can NEVER go back. Don't try Satu. I've been working my hardest to cover your trail, don't you put yourself in jeopardy. Do what ever the Detectives ask you to do. Tell them what ever you have to. Use your head kiddo.” Hitomi tapped Satu on the head with her index finger. Satu's big blue eyes stared right into Hitomi, pulling her apart in little pieces that she couldn't pick up just yet.

“What about you Hitomi? What happens to you?” Satu worried, her forehead wrinkled with concern for the Guardian. Hitomi smiled, slight tears in her eyes. Satu looked scared, unknowing what to do without Hitomi to tell her. She knew she had to grow up, but it just seemed too soon.

“I'll be okay. When things are in the clear, I will visit you again. Promise you. For now, you are safe. Master Genkai and the boys will take care of you; you have quite a following little one. Be gentle with yourself, I don't want you to exhaust. Don't use your powers in the open! It's important that you don't. Do you understand me?” Hitomi watched as Satu nodded furiously. Quickly she embraced the Satu and pulled back, afraid that if she held on for too long she might want to run away with her to make sure she was taken care of properly. But right now it was her sense of duty that pulled her back and forced her to leave her in the care of a bunch of demons and ningens with powers. Satu sobbed as Hitomi walked down the steps of the temple and out of sight.

“We'll see each other again soon, I know it.” Satu cried. Her knees fell from under her and she found warm arms holding her up gently. They folded her so she could sit on the ground, undisturbed. Satu looked up and saw the boy with blood red eyes staring out into the afternoon sky. He turned his head and looked at her; eyes bubbling over with tears and her cheeks stained red. Her eyes pleaded with him to say something, anything, but he couldn't think of a single thing to say that might make her feel better.

“Don't cry.” Hiei said softly, with as much kindness as he could muster. Satu looked at him and nodded.

{Right, I gotta be brave and what ever else I need to do. Hitomi trusts me to protect myself and that's what I have to do. I can't rely on these boys, I gotta make my own way…}

Hiei turned to look at the girl, shock running through his mind. She didn't even trust that the Tante would be able to protect her. It was like a slap in the face. Here he was, strong and powerful, a merciless killer and a silent enemy; and she didn't think he would be strong enough. Hiei walked back to the Temple, anger flowing through his veins.

“I'll get stronger Hitomi. You'll see it! I promise!” Satu screamed into the sky. She was determined to learn how to take care of herself. A light tap on the shoulder caused her to turn around. Deep emerald eyes greeted her cheerfully. She smiled and looked into them happily, trying to wipe the remaining tears out of her eyes. Kurama placed his hands on her cheeks and gently wiped the tears away with the tips of his thumbs. Softly he gazed at her. She was so vulnerable that it made his heart race. Satu raised her hands to Kurama's face and a soft white light glowed. His vision became blurry and then he felt it. She was cleansing him, taking away the strong feels of anger and pain that he was storing away. He could feel her warm hands and the strong spirit. Suddenly she pulled back and looked at the boy oddly.

“You….aren't…. are…. Youko…but… Shuichi….and…” Satu's head swirled for a bit. She thought that maybe he was just a human with powerful spirit powers, but indeed he was a demon. Not only that, but he was the legendary Makai thief Youko, the kitsune. Kurama reached for her arm as the girl looked around, trying to straighten things out.

“There is a lot that you cannot cure Satu, no matter how much you wish. Some pain stays.” Kurama said sadly, his eyes softer. Satu looked into those eyes, the eyes that held a killer and a thief behind them. She had felt his struggle, his battle to keep control of the murderous kitsune. Her own heart sank, low and deep. Kurama turned around and stopped when he felt arms around his waist, hugging him. He looked down at his stomach and saw her little hands around him. She was trying to make him feel better, the only way she knew how. Her experience with human emotions was very low, having to only deal with Angels and their range of emotions were very small. Except for Hitomi, who was more complicated than a Chinese newspaper.

“I wish I could help someone, just once. What good is an Angel who can't help someone?” Satu whispered. Kurama placed his hands on hers and pulled them apart. He turned her around and softly kissed her forehead. Satu's eyes were wide with surprise, the blue expanding like the evening sky stretching across the Pacific Ocean.

“You help so many, just by being alive. Don't forget that.” Kurama spoke softly. Satu nodded and felt Kurama slip his hand into hers like he did the first day they met. But she could feel her heart race, tear through her chest and leap out of her human body. It felt like her human stomach would explode like a volcano. It made her feel dizzy, but not the sick kind. She had no idea what the human feeling was called. Perhaps she was sick with a new kind of disease. Either way, she pulled herself together as Kurama opened the door for her to go through.

Yusuke helped lay out the food after Keiko, Botan, and Yukina taught Satu how to cook a simple meal. The gang had already gone through and properly introduced themselves to Satu. Kuwabara and Yusuke had drooled, Hiei had “Hnn”-ed and the girls had all smiled politely and started a conversation. It was typical Tante style. Satu smiled and laughed at all of Yusuke's dumb jokes, complimented all of Botan's bad cooking, and even mentioned that sleeping outside was good for one's health, finally proving Hiei's case. The gang enjoyed having Satu around, they felt connected instantly. She was so perfect. Not too perfect, but so perfect that she could only be an Angel to get away with it.

“Satu, do you remember anything about your parents?” Botan asked finally, trying to get more information. Satu looked around and then thought. She remembered her mother's voice and her smile, the way she held onto Satu when she was still small. But then there was a big black period, a dark period when her mother just went away, and one day Hitomi came to her and told her, that her mother wasn't coming back. Not that she was dead, but just that Satu would never see her mother again. The next day, Satu was sent to the Castle and Hitomi was given a Guardian title.

“Nothing about my father. I never met him. But my mother…” Satu paused and smiled, her memories tracing over all the time they had with each other. “She used to sing to me and play with me. Then one day… she never came home. Hitomi told me she went out and wouldn't come back. I remember crying for days. That's when they moved me to the Castle, they told Hitomi she would be a Guardian. It was when I met Emi too. I remember nothing really before the news. Just black, a deep and sorrowful blackness. Like maybe I'm missing something, a few pieces to the picture were ripped out.” Satu shrugged and the girls were crying while the guys looked sad at the gut-wrenching story. “Haha! Don't feel bad! It's okay! It's likely my mom just found somewhere else to go! She always talked about the Makai. She loved it there! Loved everyone and everything! She would talk about all the demons she had met and how nice they really were. I don't mind it, so please, uhmmm… don't feel like you have to be sad for me. I'm really okay! I've got Hitomi and Emi. They are family to me.” Satu smiled and watched as the Tante came back out of their small funk and into their more happy moods. Kurama smiled at Satu all through dinner, watching as she flung her head back and laughed, as she ate slowly and got frustrated with learning how to eat with chopsticks.

“Oi! So what's it like to be an angel? You do anything fun in Heaven? What's it like?!” Yusuke swallowed his food and asked Satu who seemed eager to answer the question. Everyone at the table wanted to know whether the after life was what it seemed.

“Uhmmm… Well, all Angels have to go to school, which is freakin' boring. And none of us are religious like humans think we are, which makes me laugh so hard! I hate school, I like to be outside, I listen to music, probably not a human kind though. We all have a power or two or twelve… haha, it depends on what level you are on. Levels are really weird too. Elders are the highest, and the most boring! Then it's supposed to be Guardians, then Fighters, and then just Normal Angels. Though now that I think about it… Most normal Angels are more like servants or merchants. I guess it isn't that bad. I've never had the chance to see it. Heaven is pretty white and shiny. Sorta feels like a hospital. Uhm, we don't have halos. But we do have wings. And the bright light is just the door opening to Heaven. The holders are lazy and let it hang open too long. Yeah… I guess that makes sense.” Satu sat patiently and thought. Yusuke's mouth was opened wide.

“SCHOOL?! After DEATH!?!” NO WAY!” Everyone at the table laughed and Yusuke slunk farther into his chair. Keiko smiled at him and he pouted.

“What kind of powers do you have Satu?” Yukina spoke up, wanting to know what she could do. Satu smiled.

“Well, I have typical Angel powers, which go undetected on Earth. I can heal and cleanse. But when I do that, I take a piece of people with me wherever I go. A piece of their past and a piece of their future. It's complicated, but when you do it enough, you learn to deal with it. But that's not the fun part! I can fly, obviously with the wings and all! But I can read people's minds and of course all Angels are empaths! We can do all kinds of things. I don't really know the limit to my powers yet, I seem to get new ones and then they disappear and reappear. Hitomi said it's just a part of growing up. One time I set Emi's jacket on fire! It was so funny! Hitomi tried to use her powers to blow it away, but when you add oxygen to fire, it burns more! We all laughed about it later, but it was scary for a while.” Satu giggled to herself as the gang hung on her every word. Kurama yawned and looked at the clock. It was getting later and later and he knew that he should interrupt.

“Alright, Satu, I think everyone should head off to bed. It's already midnight.” Kurama interjected. Yusuke and Kuwabara groaned, finally getting answers to life long questions about what happens to you when you die. Satu nodded and helped put the dishes in the kitchen. Kurama walked Satu to her room and stopped when they were alone and the door was shut.

“Kura-” Satu felt Kurama's lips against hers; he was melting into her. She stood frozen until Kurama pulled himself away, looking back at the girl. She still had her eyes closed and stood in the same spot. When she finally realized she could move, Kurama was no longer in the room but rather walking down the hall to his own room. Satu changed quickly and climbed into her bed, the night air cold against her skin. “Night air?” Satu looked up and saw two red eyes staring at her. Before she could scream she felt a hand cover her mouth.

“Don't scream, you'll scare them.” Hiei said sharply. Satu nodded, relieved to see it was only Hiei, the boy who told her not to cry. She smiled, knowing that he had been watching over her. Suddenly she blushed a terrible shade of red. “Onna, you're blushing.” Satu looked at the boy confused.

“What's `blushing'?” She asked Hiei. Hiei inwardly chuckled, remembering when he asked the same question. He walked up to her and pulled her hand up and placed it on her cheek. She could feel the extra warmth and only blushed harder. Innocently she looked up at him and he thought he would just die if she looked at him like that more. His throat felt tight and he felt like he was doing something wrong.

“I'm sorry! I don't mean to `Blush'! Please don't be angry! I haven't gotten the hang of this human body yet! I'm sorry!” Satu rubbed her cheeks, trying to `take off' the blush. Suddenly, Hiei found himself laughing out loud. Satu looked surprised to see the youkai laughing. “What is so funny?” She asked him.

“You can't `take it off' onna. It fades. Don't worry.” Hiei reassured the girl when he finished laughing. She nodded and rolled over in the bed. Hiei stared around the room and found a comfy chair in the corner. He plopped down and watched the girl sleep. She talked for a bit, mumbling unknown things. The room grew darker and eventually Hiei felt himself fall into sleep too. It was a deep black sleep, where he could fall forever and not land on something solid. It was dangerous and mysterious, calling out to him. But he never made it to the bottom, never found what was calling out.

“Mom!” Satu screamed and shot out of bed, her hair stuck to her face, her back soaked with sweat. Hiei opened his eyes and stared at the girl. She was having a… what did Kurama call them?

“A nightmare?” Hiei stood by the edge of the bed. Satu looked at him, her eyes again, the same over filling emotion that bore into him and yanked at his heart until it was forced to feel something. Suddenly Satu flung herself at the boy, taking a hold of him and his black cloak. She breathed deeply into it, relaxing and calming. Hiei could feel the girl's tears soak through his cloak and stick to his body. They felt thick and full of sadness. It hurt him to see something so pure in so much pain. It was like when Yukina would cry and those gems would hit the floor. They were her priceless tears, pure from her. He placed his arms around her and sat on the edge of the bed. Slowly Satu fell back asleep, her hands still gripping onto Hiei's cloak. The Jaganshi tried to take the cloak off, but found that of course it was too difficult to do without waking the Angel up. “Damn.” Hiei whispered. Just his luck. Although it was just his luck, he finally got the chance to watch the girl without Kurama for once. The kitsune was moving so fast, the girl wasn't even aware of what was going on. How could he expect her to return the feelings if she didn't even know what she was feeling? Stupid fox. Stupid, stupid fox.

“No… I don't know…I feel something…Not now…I'm different…” Satu mumbled in her sleep. Hiei tried to decode the conversation, but having a one sided conversation is hard on it's own, but with a sleeping person… it just seemed ridiculous. Slowly, Hiei fell back into the deep, black sleep. But this time, it was more peaceful. No more calling, no more falling. Just blackness and comfort.

“Love?” Hiei mumbled as he finally drifted.
