Chapter 6: Tear Drops on My Pillow
He searched frantically, she wasn't there. Wasn't anywhere. The pool of water expanded, kept unfolding until he couldn't touch the ground anymore. He floated, he sank, he felt the water touch his lungs. It bubbled to the surface and he stopped moving. The air stopped coming and he stopped moving. It was beautiful. The light on the water glistened as the waves crashed over his head. He felt heavy, like every cell in his body was taking on water. He barely had time to notice the white hair floating above him before his feet became tangled in seaweed. She was there. Above him, her blue eyes open and her white hair spread out like a fan in the dark blue water. Desperately he tried to swim up, tried to free himself, but his body was ready to die, ready to join her. At last he closed his eyes and felt someone lift him out, someone take a hold of his body and pull him to shore. The water poured out of his body and he gagged. It was black and he was falling. Falling again into the water of her eyes.
A warm hand was the first thing Hiei felt on his body that didn't hurt. He slowly opened his eyes to see Yukina sitting at his bedside, her head down on the bed sheets. Hiei felt his head hurt. His eyes hurt to move, his head hurt to think. But the most painful thing was his chest. His lungs burnt from the water and his heart burnt from scorning something so pure. Then his mind regained focus.
“Sa…tu….” Hiei mumbled into the air. Yukina awoke and looked at the Jaganshi. He looked horrible, his hair flat against his head, his face pale and his voice raspy. She checked his pulse and stared at the boy before she realized that he was trying to say something.
“Hiei-san, please don't talk! Don't strain yourself…onii-san.” Yukina blushed and Hiei's eyes widened in fear. Yukina replaced the towel on Hiei's forehead so that it would take care of his fever.
“How…??” Hiei weakly asked Yukina. She smiled at her brother.
“Satu-sama told me and I had always hoped… that it would be you, onii-san. Are you upset with me?” Yukina asked her brother. It felt wonderful for her to finally call him that. To call someone that.
“No. I'm fine. Except… my…chest.” Hiei pointed to the ton of blankets piled on top of his body. Yukina quickly removed them so Hiei could breathe better.
{Stupid girl. I can't believe she did that! How could Yukina ever be proud to call me her brother?}
“Onii-san? You have a fever. Please sleep!” Yukina fawned over her brother, trying to make him better so they could talk more. She watched as he grew frustrated. Her heart felt heavy. “I'm sorry Hiei, I must not be much of a sister…” Yukina looked down. She felt a warm hand reach out towards her. She looked and saw something unlikely- Hiei smile.
“No, I…was worried…you might not like ME.” Hiei finished. He couldn't believe that Yukina would have doubts about being his sister. Her sad face made him hurt more inside. “You are my family. Be happy…onee-chan.” Hiei said, his voice shaking from fear and happiness. Yukina cried happily at the mention of her brother actually calling her sister. Hiei listened as her priceless tears clanked on the floor.
“Stay put onii-chan; I'll let Satu-sama know you are awake.” Yukina smiled and hurried out the door before he could ask how she was doing, before he could see what happened after… he… blacked out.
“She's fine Hiei, don't push yourself.” Yusuke said from the door way, a big smile on his face. Which `she', Hiei didn't know, but the detective looked rather pleased that word had finally spread of the connection between Hiei and Yukina. Finally it was starting to look somewhat like a happy ending. “Kuwabara ain't too happy `bout it, if ya know what I mean!” Yusuke laughed and Hiei nodded. It seemed that the idiot would have more of a reason to fear him now that word was out. It was better that way.
“Onii-chan!” Yukina ran back to the room with a bowl of soup and some hot tea. Hiei sighed and subjected himself to Yukina's method of torture; the common cold. Yusuke slid the door to the bedroom closed as he passed by. Yukina smiled as she fed her brother who looked extremely displeased.
“How… is she?” Hiei quietly asked. Yukina set down the spoon full of soup and looked distant for a while. She turned to Hiei and smiled lightly.
“She is okay. Satu-sama is very strong in spirit. She woke up a few days ago, much to our surprise. We thought… maybe both of you….weren't…” Yukina pushed away tears in her eyes and looked at Hiei, the blankets around him, the paleness of his skin. “ONII-CHAN! I was SO SCARED!” Yukina let herself cry. She cried for all the times she was frustrated at not finding her brother when he had been right in front of her; for all the times that she worried about the Tante but secretly wished that they would find her brother; for all the times that she was angry that her brother didn't try to find her. But she knew better. She knew that her brother had found her; that the first time they met he had been willing to kill a human to stop her suffering. He would risk eternal damnation to protect her. She felt so small, so unworthy to be the sister of someone so brave.
“Onee-chan, don't be sad. Don't cry. Please don't. Uhm… we are together now.” Hiei tried his best to comfort his sister. Yukina smiled at him and nodded. Eventually after an hour of feeding him, Yukina fell asleep against Hiei's mountain of blankets. Slowly he lowered his feet to the ground and steadied himself to walk. It took a while to make it to the door, but he slide it open quietly and walked down the hall towards where Satu's room was. Slowly the door slide open and Kurama saw the Jaganshi leaning against the wall, bracing himself against it. Kurama's face turned angry as he stomped over towards where Hiei was.
“What do YOU think you are DOING?!” Kurama growled. Hiei sighed, prepared himself to be beaten by the kitsune. But it never came, instead Kurama picked up the boy and carried him into Satu's room, and sat him on a chair in front of the sleeping girl. Hiei looked at Satu and sighed. She was fine, her complexion was good and she was just happily sleeping. Hiei looked at Kurama who's angry scowl turned into a happy smile.
“You aren't angry at me fox?” Hiei asked. Kurama chuckled a bit.
“How could I be angry? You saved her from drowning. She even told me how you warned her from venturing out too far. I just wish I had known that she couldn't swim. I would have told you. Thank you, Hiei. Thank you SO MUCH.” Kurama cooed. He hugged the Jaganshi tightly and then walked out of the room to give the boy time alone. When Kurama was out of ear shot, he finally spoke.
“I'm sorry. I didn't…I didn't save you. I hurt you… Hnn. You probably won't...” Hiei ran his hands through his hair. Hoping that Satu would understand. He made a mistake… and it almost cost him more than his life. Slowly he looked up to find big blue eyes staring at him. A smile on Satu's face.
“Remember? `Will you forgive someone if you love them? No matter what they do to you? Even if they end up hurting you?...'” Satu trailed off. Hiei recounted his words, felt them sink in. He felt like crying; he almost killed her and she was fine with it. “Don't cry.” Hiei's got up and limped over to where Satu sat up in bed. He looked at her softly and hugged her. She smiled as she felt his warm arms around her, pulling her close. The pain he felt, it was being reversed. She felt useful for once.
“What happens when you leave?” Hiei whispered into Satu's ear. He knew that he had already surrendered her to Kurama by hurting her. She pulled him closer, not understanding what he meant.
“I'm not leaving. Promise. We will have more time to talk later. You're sister is coming to look for you.” Satu spoke softly and released her grasp on him. Hiei looked at her, confused and then heard the door open behind him. Yukina ran over to Hiei and checked his vitals.
“Onii-chan! Please go back to bed!” Yukina demanded. She wasn't going to watch her brother get pneumonia and die. Not on her watch. Hiei nodded and let her help him back to his bedroom. He looked back at her and she was looking out of the window, watching for something. Kurama passed the siblings in the hall and smiled at the two. Yukina opened the door and helped her brother back into his bed. She sat down at his bedside and cleared her throat. “Onii-chan… Kazuma seems very upset that you are my brother. Did I do something wrong?” Yukina asked her brother, she knew that he would have the answer. Hiei looked at her and felt horrible that she was caught in between him and the idiot.
“Hnn. He's just scared.” Hiei muttered. Yukina grabbed his hand and begged him to talk more. “He …ugh… LOVES you… one-chan. He is afraid that I'll put an end to that.” Hiei said, swallowing the disgust that lay against his tongue while he spoke. He certainly didn't want Yukina to end up with Kuwabara, but if she truly loved him… he had no right separate them. He did have the right to kill the boy if he ever hurt his sister.
“How can I get him to forgive me?” Yukina asked honestly. Hiei saw the determination in her eyes and he knew- the stupid boy had captured something about Yukina and she didn't want to lose him. He knew that he would forgive her in a second, that he loved her…. Hiei stopped. Suddenly he knew exactly what Satu was talking about. Love and forgiveness. He was…loved?
“Tell him how you feel. He will forgive you.” Hiei looked away from his sister and felt her squeeze his hand. A moment later she let go and left the room. He was alone again. The room was quiet and he was alone.
“Not for long.” A voice said from the door way. A tall figure in a lilac kimono walked through the door. Hitomi casually walked over to the Jaganshi. She pulled out two throwing stars from her kimono sleeves and held them to the Jaganshi's neck. He felt the pain as she pulled his head backwards. There was no way he could take on the Guardian and still live a long life. “You're pathetic. You almost killed her, and all she did was tell you that she'd care about you. What a weak, pathetic fool. You'll never be more than a stupid fool who can't even love someone.” Hitomi spat out, her mouth dangerously close to Hiei's ear so only they could hear the conversation. Hiei's throat tightened and Hitomi pulled back the small blades of the throwing stars. She looked the Jaganshi up and over and glared at him. “Leave her alone, or you'll receive a worse fate than death.” Hitomi walked out of the room, leaving Hiei to cough up blood, his lungs weak from the lake and from the extreme angle. He glared. He knew that he wasn't good enough for her. But he couldn't help how he felt; and it killed him inside… to see Kurama take Satu in his arms and show her affection like he couldn't.
“DAMNIT!” Hiei cursed himself for being helpless and worthless. He pulled the blankets off and scribbled a note on the side table before he opened the windows and took off. He didn't want any thing to do with the Tante. At least for now. He was too much of a threat to their mission. His feelings were getting in the way of him doing his job.
“Satu!” Hitomi called from the hall way. Satu perked her head up to see Hitomi walk into her room. She looked frazzled and she ran to her friend to pick her up and look her over. Satu cried and held tightly onto the older girl. Hitomi's eyes remained solid and she sat down on the bed with the girl.
“Hitomi! You came back!” Satu smiled. Hitomi noticed that Satu's voice was still weak, but she was recovering. Kurama stood in the doorway and noticed that Hitomi seemed too solid. She seemed to fragile for anyone else to detect.
“Hitomi-sama. Welcome back.” Kurama entered the room and looked at the two Angels before him. Hitomi turned her head and looked at the kitsune. Her look seemed fearful of time.
“Ah, Kurama, we should talk. Excuse me Satu.” Hitomi stood and stepped outside the room with the kitsune. Kurama looked at the girl and he could see her struggling to keep a straight face and not break down into tears.
“What is it?” Kurama started; he wasn't about to risk the time delay of Hitomi getting her self together. She seemed grateful that he skipped right to the point.
“They know. One of them at least. She is curious as to how Satu is doing. I don't have time to get Satu out of here and cover up. I told her that I would personally bring her down here to see Satu. But then I hear that a certain Jaganshi almost killed her. How am I supposed to take THAT!? Both of you need to get yourselves together! You cannot be with her. You are a demon, and she is an Angel. She is off limits. Now, let your friends know. I will try and heal Satu the best that I can. Go.” Hitomi looked angrily at the kitsune. Kurama was taken a back by the direct forwardness of the Guardian. His blood boiled and he glared at her; but something inside of him told him that he better just do what the Guardian said.
“Fine.” Kurama went to find Genkai and Yusuke and break the news. Hitomi sighed and walked back into Satu's room. The blue eyes glowed in the night, questioning the conversation that she had overheard. Hitomi smiled softly and sat down by the girl, focusing her energy and concentrating on Satu's body. A light grew around Satu's body and she giggled. Slowly Hitomi healed Satu. When she finished she sat for a minute and stared at the girl. Satu opened her eyes and looked at her Guardian.
“What Hitomi? Something is wrong?”
“One of the Elders knows Satu. She's coming to see you tomorrow. I'm sorry. I failed you.” Hitomi sighed. Satu placed her hand in Hitomi's. When she looked up, Satu was smiling.
“It's okay. You'll be here with me right? And so will Hiei and Kurama and Master Genkai… and all of the wonderful people here. We are okay.” Satu said cheerful. Hitomi tried to smile, but she couldn't completely fake it. It was more than likely that Satu was going to be going back to the Castle, and that Hitomi herself… well… she didn't much care about herself at the moment.
“Yeah Satu, we'll be here with you. All of us.” Hitomi mumbled. Satu nodded and she continued holding Hitomi's hand until she fell back asleep. Hitomi watched as Satu's chest fell down and then back up; repeating itself. Hitomi felt hypnotized.
“Good evening weavening Hitomi-chan!” A chipper voice caught Hitomi off guard, but she knew that it wasn't a threat.
“Good evening Yume-sama. I see your travels were safe.” Hitomi turned to face the Elder. Yume smiled and winked at Hitomi. The Elder's lime green hair was a contrast to her crimson eyes. Hitomi bowed in front of the Elder, watching and waiting. Yume surveyed the room.
“Oh yessy- great! But I must admit, it is always very rough without wingys! OH! Satu-chan! What a cutey! I haven't seen her in yearsies!” Yume walked over to the girl asleep in the bed. She looked over her and was surprised that the girl had survived for so long. “I thinksies it's time for lil ole me to meets the Master of this temple. What do you thinks?” Yume said, her childish voice ringing in Hitomi's ears. She didn't hate the Elder, she just wished that they weren't picked so young.
{At least they could wait till they're my age. 10 is a little young.}
“Oh Hitomi-chany wany, I'm 17. Silly willy. You should have your facts straighty! Now let's go!” Yume walked out of the bedroom and Hitomi followed, looking behind her at the sleeping girl; unaware of what the future would hold. Hitomi heard Yume-sama calling her.
“Coming Yume-sama!” Hitomi called and hurried towards where the Elder was racing off towards. It was going to be interesting.
