Chapter 7: Dreaming About You
Yume sat around the table with the group of humans and youkai who were taking care of Satu. She smiled at everyone and drank her tea slowly. Hitomi felt her heart race, not sure how the Elder would act.
“So, Yume-sama, what official business are you here on?” Genkai asked the girl. She looked like she must be at least 16, but the sound of her voice and the words she chose made her seem like a 7 year old.

“Oh Genkaiiiiiiiii!” Yume beckoned the master of the temple from what ever room she was hiding in. Kurama and Yusuke were the first to see Yume and her loud pink clothing. They both stopped in place, Kurama bowing and Yusuke scowling.
“Who the hell are you?” Yusuke groaned. Hitomi reached out to push Yusuke back, but it was too late. Yume came up really close to Yusuke and flicked him in the forehead, sending him flying backwards. Yume shook her head.
“No swearing mmmkays? Thanksies!” Yume happily moved along past the shaking kitsune… who quickly ran to check on his friend. Yusuke sighed and pulled himself back together.
“Crazy women…” Yusuke growled. Kurama nodded and both followed Hitomi and the new girl into the temple.

Genkai shifted uncomfortably as she waited for Yume to stop drinking her tea. Finally Yume set her tea down and looked at the master.
“I just lovey your hair! It's so kawaii!” Yume spot happily. Genkai blushed and looked at a strand of her hair. The elderly pink hair still had its color and it was exactly Yume's favorite color.
“Thank you. But please, Yume-sama…if we could talk about Satu for a moment…” Genkai begged the Elder to stay on topic. Yume looked around the room and looked at all the fancy objects. She picked up a pair of chopsticks and examined them.
“OH… sure! Satu…. Hmmmm… yes… I know her! What do you want to know about her?! Hmmmsies?!” Yume smiled feverently. Genkai sighed and put her head in her hands. Kurama tried to comfort her, but it seemed to be a pointless task. Yume had taken to playing with the chopsticks on the table.
“Yume-sama, Master Genkai would like for Satu to stay here with her. Because she is part demon, Master Genkai is positive that training would be good for her. What do you think?” Hitomi looked at Genkai who hadn't had the slightest idea what Hitomi was talking about. She nodded politely, as if he were her own idea. Yume looked up at Hitomi and the Master.
“I think I'm hungry-wungry!” Yume laughed. Hitomi clenched her hand then gently pushed herself up and walked into the kitchen. Seconds later Hitomi walked out of the kitchen with a full meal. Kurama looked at the Guardian; he sure was surprised. “Awww, thanksies Hitomi-chan! You are super-duber!” Yume dug into the food, happy when she saw all the desserts that Hitomi placed out.
“I truly think it would be best for Satu to stay here, where I can train her to use her demonic powers well.” Genkai stepped into the conversation some where between the flan and the tiramisu. Yume nodded and swallowed her mouthful of food.
“Yesie… BUT! We don't really want her to use her demonic powers! She's better in the castle, safe from the outside worldly.” Yume spoke. Kurama and Yusuke rolled their eyes.
“Don't you think you are stifling her a bit?” Kurama asked the Elder. Hitomi shot him a glare but he didn't care. He wanted answers. “What about her father? Do you even know who he is!? Maybe he is looking for her? What about what she wants!? Do you even CARE!??” Kurama rose his voice and Yume looked up at the boy. She stopped eating her sweets and had a blank expression.
“I never asked her, but I'm sure she'd be more happy-wappy with us! We love her sooooooooo muches!” Yume smiled. Her dazzling crimson eyes sparking angry in Kurama's veins.
“Why don't you ask her then? Maybe she would like to stay here.” Kurama fought. Genkai rolled her eyes at the overly passionate kitsune. He wasn't going to win his battle with the Elder if he kept that up. Suddenly she had an idea.
“Alright, you can take her home tomorrow morning.” Genkai said. Kurama and Hitomi looked at the master with rage. Yusuke was baffled; first Genkai was all about protecting the girl because she didn't have all the answers; then she was willing to let her go the next morning.
“Super- dupers! I'm totally excited! Thansies! I guess that settles it then! I will be backsides for her tomorrow morning!!” Yume giggled, happy that she didn't have to argue with the master.
“Are you stupid?! What the hell kind of plan is that!?!” Yusuke interjected. Yume looked at the boy and Yusuke ran and just kept running. He was no match for the Elder. Kurama and Genkai watched as the Elder beat Yusuke down and forced him to say `I will not swear!' one hundred times before she would get up. Quickly Yume walked back to the master and bowed. Genkai felt her eye twitch; how could someone with the mentality of a 6 year old beat Yusuke up like a trained Master? It didn't concern her at the moment, she didn't care. The brat got what he deserved anyway.
“Okatays! Goodbies for now Master Genkai! See you all in the morning! Hitomi-chan.” Yume nodded and then disappeared in a pink puff of girlish smoke. Yusuke coughed and hacked up a storm. Genkai covered her nose and Hitomi didn't seem affected by it.
“What is your plan? You better have one, and it better be good.” Hitomi spat at the Master. Genkai looked at Hitomi and nodded. Kurama sighed, relieved that he wasn't going to have to give up Satu at all. Yusuke continued to hack and cough up smoke as Genkai lead everyone back to a secret meeting. Carefully she placed a very important call.
“Hello? I need a favor that only YOU can do. Of course. Life or death. Don't be stupid! Yes…” Genkai sighed. Yusuke looked at the old lady. “I'm on hold.” Genkai held the phone away from her. Suddenly she heard a click and the person on the line sighed. “Thank you. It will only be for… a week tops. How should I know?! Yes! Female. Not my problem. Fine. Alright! I get it. Sorry I asked. Okay. Good bye.” Genkai slammed down the phone and got up, mumbling something about unreliable men and their tempers. Quietly she walked to her room, leaving the rest of the gang to look puzzled at her rather bizarre phone conversation.
“Are you sure she isn't crazy?” Hitomi asked, convinced the old lady had lost it.
“Sometimes I think she is. Honestly…” Yusuke sighed. Everyone stood and went back to their rooms, trudging and dragging their feet.

Slowly Hitomi opened the door to Satu's room. The young girl was asleep, peaceful and serene like it should be. Hitomi pulled a chair next to the bed and watched the girl sleep. Satu clung onto one of the pillows like she was hanging from a cliff. It was a tight grasp that made Hitomi's heart crumble.
“Satu-chan, when did you become so much bigger?” Hitomi smiled…

“Hitomi-onee-chan!” The little girl cried from inside the room. Hitomi looked at the other Guardians and smiled sweetly. As Hitomi walked into the castle's largest bedroom she saw a small girl crying, her hands rubbing out the tears and her bare feet pale against the dark tile. The girl looked up at Hitomi and smiled, her midnight blue eyes shining.
“Satu-chan, why are you crying?” Hitomi asked the little girl with short white hair cropped at her neck. Satu sniffled and looked up at the older girl.
“I don't want to wear this again! Please! It itches!” Little Satu begged. Hitomi smiled and shook her head. She swooped and picked little Satu up and held her close. Satu stopped crying and looked at Hitomi.
“Hitomi-onee-chan, what is love?” Little Satu asked. Hitomi continued walking until she got to little Satu's big bed. Carefully she slid the little girl into it, pulling the covers over her chest. Hitomi sat down on the bed, enjoying the plush material.
“Why are you asking me about love Satu-chan? Was Kohana talking about it?” Hitomi sighed, hoping the little girl would drop the question; let it fall away into oblivion. It was too much to hope for.
“No. I was reading… the book said that love is when you feel a very special emotion for another person.” Little Satu said, sitting straight up in her bed and grabbing her stuffed rabbit. Hitomi smiled.
“It's true Satu-chan. Love is a very special emotion. It's strong and it can overcome anything.” Hitomi laughed softly. Little Satu yawned and sunk deeper into her bed, pulling the blankets close to her chin.
“Hitomi-onee-chan, how do you know so much about love?” Little Satu giggled. Hitomi smiled and tickled the little girl. Little Satu laughed and squirmed.
“Because I love you Satu-chan. I love you so much that I'll even bring you something back from my trip.” Hitomi laughed, the little girl snuggled in her bed, her white hair laying against the fancy pillow.
“You promise?” Little Satu said, doubt in her mind.
“Of course I promise!” Hitomi replied. Little Satu nodded and rolled over, ready to sleep. Hitomi got up and turned off the lights. She walked towards the door but stopped when she heard little Satu sit straight up.
“Hitomi-onee-chan…” Little Satu said.
“Yes?”
“I love you too…” Little Satu whispered softly. Hitomi's eyes filled up but she sucked all the emotion back in. It was important to show that she was strong and capable of protecting.
“Good night Satu-chan.”
“Night, Hitomi-onee-chan.” Hitomi walked out of the room and closed the door. Slowly she slid down it and relaxed. She was tired from working all day and taking care of Little Satu. The girl just never stopped asking questions. She and Little Emi were always getting into trouble. Slowly Hitomi picked herself up and walked over to an open window, the silent breeze blowing against her hair. She breathed it in and smiled. Little Satu was so small now, just a child… but what would happen once the girl got older? Would she still be able to be this innocent? Would she still be as good? Hitomi laughed. She must be having a parent's nightmare, wondering if the Angel would turn out the way Hitomi raised her. Eventually she would have to tell Little Satu that she really wasn't her sister, but it could wait. After all, Little Satu was only 8. She'd be able to hold off Little Satu for a while more, but eventually the truth would come out. Hitomi just didn't know when.

Hitomi frowned, the memory very strong in her mind. Satu wasn't so little anymore, she was 17 in human years and almost old enough to apply for her own release from the Elder's custody. Satu rolled over under her covers. Hitomi felt sadness pull at her heart. There were no more stuffed animals, no more tea parties, no more innocent questions. The sadness didn't last too long; it was quickly covered up by happy memories. Hitomi remembered the first year Satu went to Angel training, the first time she used her wings. Hitomi cherished those memories. Satu was growing up, and she only wanted to let the girl grow. But she didn't want her to be pulled into the darkness by those two youkai.
“Stupid boys, thinking they had a chance…” Hitomi sighed. She fingered the hem of her kimono sleeve. It was wearing away slowly from her same nervous habit. Hitomi tried not to let her mind wander into areas that she couldn't pull back from. Her memories were stuffed back in her mind with her emotions. They were building and building and she was afraid that maybe one day she would explode from holding everything back. But that was Heaven for you; fake perfect requires lots of strength to hold ones self back.
“Hi…Hiei…” Satu mumbled, her face smiling, but her eyes still closed and dreaming. Hitomi grumbled a bit at the mention of the Jaganshi's name. She had warned him, threatened him. He was wise to leave. She didn't need to walk into the room to know that. It was every where. The absence of the Forbidden One was welcomed in Hitomi's book. She was sick of him and the kitsune trying to love Satu. The only one worthy of loving her was really no one. Hitomi knew, it wasn't meant to be. Satu would never be able to love anyone, and no one was supposed to try.
“NO! I can't think like them!” Hitomi choked. For a moment she sounded like the Elders, trying to hold Satu back. Hitomi ran her fingers along the sleeves of her kimono, feeling the silky texture along the pads of her finger-tips. It wasn't that no one could love Satu; it was that Hitomi saw no one good enough to have Satu as a partner. Slowly Hitomi ran her hand along the little girl's face. It was cold and soft. Hitomi pulled the covers up over Satu's chest until it came to rest on right under her chin.
“Hi…onee… cha….” Satu mumbled in her sleep. Softly the tears started leaking out of Hitomi's eyes. Of all the things that Satu had said repeatedly, Hitomi learned to answer to only 2 things. Hitomi walked towards the door and wiped her tears along her lilac kimono, afraid to let anyone else see her cry. The door slid shut and Satu lay there, asleep, unaware of anything around her.
