Chapter 8: Beautiful Tears

Hiei finished slashing through the few remaining trees. He couldn't get the damn girl out of his mind. The slicing of his blade against random objects didn't feed the anger he had. She smiled at him and he melted, quicker than string against a flame. Maybe he should just confront her about it, tell her…

{Fool! What would that accomplish?}

Slowly Hiei let himself slip back into his own body, let his head separate from his heart. He remembered something that Kurama had said a while ago: `Let your heart lead you.' Hiei sank lower into his misery. The girl was making him second guess himself. He sought a right answer, but to do that… he would have to clear his head and let it all come naturally. Hiei closed his eyes and waited for it. The night wind blew against his chest, ripping against his clothing. He tried to pry into his mind to let it explode, but it wouldn't budge. Softly he could feel it all crack, he felt himself giving in to what his heart was feeling and not his head. It was a dangerous strategy, but sometimes he needed to trust his gut. It was screaming something at him. Screaming and yelling.

See her.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ AT THE TEMPLE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

She was asleep across her bed, her body facing the window. He could watch her chest move up and down like it did a week ago. The black shirt was big on her, coming almost to her knees. He watched as she cried in her sleep, occasionally waking to rub her eyes dry and fall back into her depression. Her cheeks were red and her eyes were puffy. Something inside of him ate at the sadness and guilt he felt when he looked at her. It was only a few hours since he left. Perhaps his message was too mean? He hadn't meant for HER to find it. But he wasn't exactly sure who found it.

{Silly girl…}

Hiei sat and stared into her window, watching her body stammer when she started crying heavily. At one point Kurama even ran into the room when Satu started to sob. He woke her up and held her to his chest. She looked at him and smiled when she had finally started to calm down. Hiei felt the jealously rise in his chest and then fall when Satu pushed Kurama away. He wasn't wanted in the room and Hiei could tell. Satu didn't want anyone to be in her room if she was going to be so vulnerable.

“Onii-chan!” A happy voice called. Hiei inwardly cursed himself for coming back. When he looked down at the base of the tree, a special Koorime stood. Hiei flitted down to where Yukina was overly happy at the return of her one and only brother. “Why did you leave us? Poor Satu-sama went to look for you and found your note. She won't stop crying onii-chan! Please go see her!” Yukina pulled on her brother's sleeve. She wanted Satu-sama to be happy as well as her brother. There was something there that only she could see. Something she didn't know the name for.

“Hnn. It's not that easy.” Hiei mumbled. Yukina looked at her brother and for once she was the one glaring. Hiei felt his sister's stare penetrate right into him. He wanted to fix everything, but he didn't want to get too close to the Angel.

“Onii-chan, you go and apologize!” Yukina tried to sound as demanding as she could, failing only slightly to scare Hiei. Finally he disappeared into Satu's room, where Yukina assumed he was going to wait and apologize when she awoke. Outwardly she smiled a happy smile, knowing that Kazuma was waiting for her inside. It turned out that he was just worried they couldn't be together. Yukina smiled.

{Now onii-chan will be happy like me and Kazuma-kun!}

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ SATU'S ROOM _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Satu sniffled and clung to the bedding. Her heart was full of sorrow, and she felt like it was sick. Kurama had already checked on her 5 times since she found the note scrawled on the bedside table. Hiei was gone, angry at himself for caring too much. But really, Satu was sure that it was her fault. That her “accident” was too much for Hiei to handle.

{If only…I just want to see him once more…. please!}

{You've got your wish.}

Satu opened her eyes and stared into the darkness of her room. It took her a few seconds before she could make out the beautiful glowing red eyes in the corner. She didn't fear them, knowing who was behind them. She flung herself out of bed and jumped on the figure.

“HIEI!” Satu exclaimed. She wrapped her arms around the Jaganshi, happy to see that he actually came back. His face was flushed slightly and he looked nervous. Satu smiled as she placed her head on Hiei's chest, listening to his heart race. The Jaganshi looked at the Angel, laying her head across his chest while holding him against the floor. He felt his racing heart give him away as Satu looked into his eyes. Hers cheeks were red from tears but her eyes remained their solid blue, washing over him like a darkened lake at midnight. His mouth twitched, trying not to smile and frown; his emotions switching rapidly.

“Onna, off.” Hiei mumbled; Satu quickly pulled herself back. She looked at Hiei, who looked uncertain as to what he could say.

“I'm sorry. I love you.” Satu smiled. Hiei's eyes bugged wide and his heart stopped. Satu tilted her head. Hiei's mouth opened, not sure that he heard her right. The words seemed to flow into his head and right down into the pit of his stomach, causing it to be disruptive. He grabbed his katana and then released it. There was something about those words that he didn't want to listen to.

“You should be in bed.” Hiei said. Quickly he picked himself up. She followed his lead, looking at him honestly and serenely; only optimism in her eyes. Hiei wanted to rip apart her smile; make her see that he wasn't someone she could love. Satu grabbed his hand and held it in her own. She looked at the boy and smiled; unaware of the magnitude of what she said. It sliced through Hiei's body, killing everything in its path. “Sit down.” Hiei demanded of the girl. She sat on the bed, grabbing a pillow and placing it on her lap. Softly she gazed at the boy, waiting for him to talk.

“Is something wrong Hiei?” Satu asked. Hiei chuckled lightly. Wrong? He just felt like he was more alone than ever. It was wrong for her to love him, if that is what she even felt. First off, that damned Guardian would kill him; and secondly, Kurama, his best friend…. That was a totally different betrayal.

“Satu, do you know what love is?” Hiei asked the girl gently. His heart burnt. He wanted her to really mean it, but he wanted to stick to the plan. The sooner he got her back, the quicker he could just forget her. Forget her? He doubted it.

“Of course! Hitomi said that love is very important and it over comes anything. It's a special emotion and you feel it for special people! It's how I feel about you!” Satu smiled. She remembered when Hitomi taught her what love was. Of course it was better explained in the book, but she knew that Hiei would understand it. Hiei's body shivered; she said it again, making it harder for Hiei to imagine that she didn't feel it.

“Kurama loves you. You should love him.” Hiei commented. Satu sighed, it seemed that the Jaganshi was going to be difficult. “You can't love me. Alright?” Hiei tried to convince himself, because it obviously wasn't working on Satu.

“Kurama does love me….but…..” Satu nodded, then looked at her hands. Hiei listened, wanted her to keep going on.

“But what?” Hiei pushed further. He wanted to know, needed to know what was going on. A part of him wanted her to need him. The other part was angry that he had betrayed Kurama's trust.

“I don't know… I feel something different…” Satu said, her body feeling frustrated that she couldn't make the boy understand what she was saying.

“Will it change?” Hiei asked. He didn't want it to, didn't want her to ever feel different.

“Not now… I'm different…” Satu smiled. Softly she ran her hand against Hiei's cheek. He didn't want to think about her anymore, afraid it would only hurt her; but she made it so hard. Then he stopped. Her words seemed familiar, too familiar.

“You took this from the kitsune's future. This is what you took from him- yourself.” Hiei's eyes were filled with shock. Satu nodded, surprised that Hiei knew what she took. Hiei stepped forward, towards the Angel. She pulled him close and hugged him tightly.

{I don't know how you know that Hiei, but yes, I did. Because when you told me not to cry, I had to help you. I wanted to be there for you, no matter how you feel.}

{But…I'm not…Not good for you. You've seen it already.}

Satu looked at the Jaganshi, his red eyes unsure of her decision to pick him. He tried to look away; tried to not be convinced. He didn't want to hurt Kurama, he didn't want to lose the only partner he ever had.

{Kurama knows.}

{What?!}

“You didn't think he wouldn't see it, did you? Hiei, even I know that.” Satu giggled and Hiei felt the guilt beat him up. He finally met her gaze and looked right into her eyes. She lowered herself so that she was even with him, her nose touching his. Hiei's heart raced, his body felt like the ningen snack Jell-o.

“O...onna…” Hiei felt her lock his gaze. His body wouldn't move, his eyes could only open and shut.

{I do love you.}

{Hnn…I wish you wouldn't…}

Satu leaned in and kissed the boy's forehead. Hiei felt her lips brush against him and it surprised him. Satu sat back in her bed and pulled the covers over herself. Hiei finally felt his body come back to him. Slowly he sat in the chair by the angel, her white hair blending in with the white sheets. He let it all sink in. Satu, his mission, was now in love with him. Hiei shook his head, confused, but not angry. How could he be angry at her? She was perfect, she was an angel. Another reason why he was confused.

{This is not right…}

{I know.}

Hiei shot up as Kurama walked into the room, his angry scowl painted across his face. Hiei stood still as the kitsune walked towards him. There was too much to explain on Hiei's part, too much he didn't know how to tell the kitsune.

{She's leaving tomorrow morning. Genkai made the okay.}

{What?}

{The Elder is coming to get her Hiei. I'm sorry.}

Hiei's heart started beating again.

{Sorry? For what?}

{That you are going to be separated. What else?}

Kurama looked at the boy, unsure of what else he should be apologizing for? After all, it was the Jaganshi who took off from the Angel, not Kurama.

{Nothing. Never mind.}

{Alright Hiei. Are you sure?}

{Hnn.}

{Okay. You might as well stay with her tonight, she'll be gone in the morning.}

Kurama patted his partner on the shoulder and walked towards the door. Before he went out, he looked back at the boy, his black clad figure unsure and rigid. Kurama left the room, much to Hiei's surprise. Quickly he grabbed Satu's form and shook her gently.

“Onna, wake up.” Hiei demanded. Satu rolled over and opened her big blue eyes. Hiei felt himself melt, but only momentarily. “Why didn't you tell me you were going home tomorrow!?” Hiei's eyes were angry. If she had known, she should have told him and not gotten him all mixed up. “And why was the fox being so nice!? Did you do something to him!?” Satu giggled. Hiei growled, her laughter was cute but she didn't need to tease him.

“When I took myself out of his future, I also erased his feelings… I just had to say a certain sentence to erase them. And I know I'm leaving. But I'll be back, don't you worry,” Satu grabbed Hiei's hand and squeezed it tightly. “I did take the loneliness away didn't I?” Satu smiled. Hiei nodded.

“But if you're gone, I will be lonely…” Hiei frowned. He bet that she didn't think of that.

“Yukina is going to take care of that for me.” Satu said, catching Hiei off guard.

{So that's why you told her? So I wouldn't be lonely while you were gone? Hnn.}

{You are such a smart cookie!}

{Onna…}

{Yes Hiei?}

{Uhm…}

Hiei stumbled over the words he wanted to say to her. He wasn't going to let her go that easily.

{I love you too…}

Hiei's face flushed red. Satu sat up and pretended to rub away Hiei's `blush'. They both laughed softly and then Hiei pulled the girl close to him. He never thought he would be able to do such a thing. His heart leapt and jumped and flipped. It was full of joy and it was ready to explode with happiness.

“Satu?” A voice called from the hallway. Satu poked her head around Hiei's embrace. It was Emi and Hitomi, standing in the hallway. Slowly Hiei let go of the angel and watched as she got out of bed and stood by him.

“It's time Satu-chan. Say your goodbyes.” Hitomi told the young girl. She was furious that the youkai had won over Satu's heart. In no way was he suitable, but she couldn't ruin Satu's happiness: she'd argue later. Satu looked at Hiei, whose face was growing paler by the minute. She looked at him and he held her for a minute, trying to remember all the things he loved about her most. Finally Satu pulled herself away from the youkai.

“No good byes, okay?” Satu smiled, a tear rolling down her cheek. Hiei nodded, his eyes holding back everything he wanted to say to her. He'd see her again; he just didn't know when.

“Ready Satu-chan!” Emi squealed, her voice ringing in Hiei's ears. The Jaganshi watched the three walk down the hall way and then disappear towards the front door. He didn't follow. There was no reason for him to chase her. She'd come back to him.

“Onii-chan, please come outside with me, I want to say good bye to Satu-sama.” Yukina begged the boy. It was early morning and his sister had packed a lunch for Satu. Softly Hiei smiled and nodded.

Satu clung to Hitomi's kimono, staring down at the beautiful creation design along the left side. It was blooming flowers and clouds; all reaching up towards the sun and heaven. Suddenly a puff of pink smoke hit the ground and Yume stepped out, wearing hot pink leg warmers and mittens on top of her obnoxious pink ensemble. Yusuke snorted, trying to watch his language, but finding so many reasons to give the Elder a good beat down. Yume stared at Genkai and Hitomi.

“Hellloooooooies! Where are yous Satu-channnnnn?!?!” Yume called out overly-friend to Satu. Hitomi let Satu step out from behind her and show herself. Yume smiled and rushed to great the girl. Hitomi wanted to punch the Elder for being so friendly with the girl when she never was before. “Ohhhhs! Satu-chany wany! You are soooooos cute todays! Did you have so much funny wunny?!” Yume dripped with sweetness. Satu looked at Hitomi and nodded.

“Just take her, don't make this drag on.” Genkai asserted herself and spoke for everyone there. Slowly she could see Yukina drag Hiei out of the temple and towards the group of people standing by the group of Angels. He saw Satu's face and wanted to go to her. She didn't look at him directly, always a quick glance.

“Alrighties! Let's go hommmmmmmme!!!! Waits…” Yume stopped her usual cheerfulness. Genkai drew in her breath and felt hers chest constrict. Yume looked at Satu, up and down and all around. Hitomi looked at the Elder like she was crazy. Never had Hitomi seen Yume-sama act so crazy (which was saying a lot considering that Yume-sama was always weird).

“Something wrong?” Kurama interrupted. Yume looked at the kitsune and back at Satu. Satu stared at the Elder, her eyes emotionless and bored. Yume looked deeply into them. Then she looked up and at Genkai. Genkai's heart paused and she looked directly at the Elder, refusing to give in.

“Oh Nothing.” Yume finally smiled. Yusuke was caught off guard at the cheerful Elder's solid words. Genkai let her breath exit her body, finally resting and breathing normally. Yume took the girl with her, pulled her close and then they were gone in a puff of pink smoke. When the girlish pink smoke dissipated, there was a scroll left behind with Hitomi's name on it. Slowly, Hitomi picked up the scroll and opened it carefully. She smiled and breathed a sigh of relief and handed it to Genkai who read it out loud.

Master Genkai,
At this point in time, I am entrusting Satu into your care. Please do take good care of her and I will be sure to take care of your pupil. If this plan works, I will be sure to pay you another visit to check on Satu. Thank you for your cooperation,
Elder Yume-Sama

Genkai smiled and Hiei looked confused. Suddenly a white light glowed behind him and instead of Yukina, Satu stood behind him. Hiei's eyes were wide, along with Kuwabara's and Keiko's. Hitomi smiled and high fived Yusuke. Genkai looked pleasantly content.

“I told you no goodbyes!” Satu laughed. Hiei felt like he had been tricked. He didn't even know that they had planned anything like this, he would have been more convincing.

“Don't worry, Yukina is safe in the kitchen with Botan. They decided to make dinner early so we could ALL eat.” Yusuke laughed. Hiei nodded and the group all headed back to the temple, ready to get to work.
