Chapter 9: Painful Memories
The gang sat down to an early dinner, Yukina and Keiko were bustling around the table trying to get out the big meal while Botan was screaming in the kitchen that she didn't really have any cooking skills. Kurama was tentative and kind, unlike what Hiei thought the fox would be. He himself didn't understand Satu's powers, or even why she was still here.
“Onna, why are you here?” Hiei asked Satu kindly. Satu smiled, her eyes wide with happiness. His heart raced.
“Well….” Satu began.
“Let me explain,” Genkai interrupted. Satu nodded and Hiei looked at the old master. “I sent Yana to copy Satu. When she left the room with Hitomi and Emi, it was simply so that she could get copied and in turn use her powers to transform into Yukina. Yukina agreed to it and we set it up.” Genkai said.
“But I was the one who know that Yume-sama would take Yana and allow him to live there, in an isolated area so that he doesn't have to be Satu all the time. It was really an amazing plan.” Hitomi quietly sipped her tea and spoke. Hiei was shocked to hear that lots of people were in on the trick, a tad angry that he wasn't told the strategy. It was over ruled by his joy that Satu was going to stay. Botan finally came out of the kitchen, food smeared all over her face. Carefully she wiped it off and sat down, exhausted.
“I hate cooking.” Botan whimpered. Satu smiled, lighting up the entire room.
“Thank you Botan!” Satu exclaimed. The blue haired girl looked up at Satu and smiled, feeling better already. The dinner went fast, with the gang all together and Satu still safe. Hitomi looked over at the girl often, checking to make sure she was still there. Hiei couldn't keep his eyes off of Satu either. It was obvious to the gang, but no one dared to say anything. Kuwabara hadn't really said much to Hiei lately; knowing now that Hiei was Yukina's sister. But Hiei wasn't going to pull them apart, he'd push them together if that's what Yukina wanted. Hiei inwardly smiled.
{Love is love.}
“Alright, I think I'm worn out for today! I'm going to go sleep. Thank you so much for dinner and for wanting me here!” Satu laughed and stood up. The gang smiled.
“Anytime!”
“Our pleasure.”
“Awesome to have you around!”
“Don't go changing our minds!”
“Ha! Good night you guys!” Satu said as she walked back to her bedroom. Hitomi motioned for Emi to go with her. When the two girls were gone, out of ear shot, Hitomi cleared her throat.
“We have to talk about what's going on here.” Hitomi said, looking directly at Hiei and Kurama. Hiei looked back at the Guardian and glared. He didn't like to be pointed out directly. Kuwabara and Yusuke looked at the two Youkai, confused. Kurama didn't move, remaining calm and collected.
“Alright, let's talk. I'll start.” Kurama said, a hint of betrayal in his voice. Hiei waited for the fox to snap and attack, but again, it didn't come. “You lied to us.” Kurama's voice was distrustful. Hitomi smirked.
“I had to. You wouldn't have taken her in if I didn't.” Hitomi placed her hand on the table. Genkai looked confused and so did Yusuke.
“What do you mean? You lied? About what!? What is going on!! I'm so confused!!” Yusuke slammed his fist on the table and Keiko jabbed him in the sides. “Ouch! Keiko…” Keiko tried to follow the conversation and Yusuke was interrupting.
“She lied about Satu being a Celestial Angel. She isn't at all. I don't even think she's an Angel.” Kurama spat out. Hitomi looked angry.
“You have no idea how hard I had to work to defend that girl! I saved her life! You think I want to admit that she doesn't have a place with her kind!? OF COURSE NOT!” Hitomi gritted her teeth and Kurama growled. Both of them were going to destroy something, and Genkai hoped it wasn't her home.
“I understand, but you should have told us the truth! What about her powers?! Where are they coming from?!” Kurama asked angrily. Hitomi sighed, trying to pull in all her anger. She felt the line getting thinner, like she would snap and hurt someone.
“She's relatively normal, except that she's part angel, demon, human. We always assumed that when her mother's genes mixed with the genes of a demon, that she was turned into part human. We just, cannot find evidence to prove that.” Hitomi told the gang. Botan nodded and Yukina looked at Hiei, who tried hard to take it all in. He wasn't sure what it meant at this point.
“So, can she live here?” Hiei asked the Guardian who glared at him. He glared right back, his blood red eyes fierce and passionate.
“I guess.” Hitomi said; the answer weighing heavy on her tongue. Inwardly she wanted to say no, but it wouldn't have done much good.
“Then tell us the truth,” Kurama interrupted, sticking his point right to Hitomi who sighed heavily. She'd rather not reveal the entire truth, but she didn't she a way out of it.
“All right… I'll tell you…” Hitomi breathed in the last breath of fresh air she'd have for a while; free of worries and free of heart ache.

“YOU'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY I LOVE HIM!!” Ren screamed at the Lead Elder.
“I've tolerated your crazy antics enough! He's a DEMON!!! What else do we need to say!?” Another Elder yelled at the Celestial Angel, whose wavy light blue soaked by her tears.
“You know what? It doesn't matter. Because I'm having his child.” Ren smiled happily as she touched her stomach, the visions of her daughter in her arms flooded her. The Elders were outraged, yelling and screaming and furious that their Celestial Angel had done such a thing.
“Your child will never be allowed to have the title of Angel! You know that!?” Another Elder chimed in. Ren smiled, tears falling down her cheeks.
“My child doesn't have to be anything! I will always love my child! And no ELDERS are going to take that away from me!” Ren screamed and then she spread her wings and was gone.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ END OF FLASH BACK ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hitomi cried, tears falling down her cheeks. Hiei was scared to see the girl crying. It meant that it wasn't going to get easier from here on. It was going to be dangerous, harder too.
“She had the baby, and it was a disgrace. Our community locked her in the castle, keeping her and her child from the light of day. Ren was happy with Satu by her side, watching her grow day by day. That was when I started working in the castle. I was young and I didn't have potential. My parents thought I'd just be alone my entire life because I was a cold child.” Hitomi's chest felt heavy, the burden of all these secrets was hard to carry, but harder to tell. Nothing was lifting it from her heart; it was tattooed there permanently.
------------------------- FLASH BACK -------------------------
The castle was light, the windows open and the sunshine pouring in. Little Hitomi walked down the hall, a tray of tea and a bottle resting upon it. She inwardly growled, angry that she had let her mother talk her into working for the Shamed Angel. It was a disgraceful job to work in the castle. Slowly she walked down the hall, hoping that she wouldn't be devoured by the Angel or maimed. Horrible images ran through her mind of what the old Angel must look like. She would have long grey hair and bad teeth. Little Hitomi sighed and stopped in front of a two large wooden doors. Carefully she placed the tray on one hand so she could knock.
“Come in.” A soft voice said before Hitomi's hand connected with the door. She shivered and opened the door with her free hand. It was light in the room, colored in a soft pink. Little Hitomi walked in, careful to avoid traps that the ugly old Angel would set to kill the castle workers.
“I have tea.” Little Hitomi choked out. She looked around the room and didn't see anyone in it. The lights were all on and there was a large bed in front of her. To the side of the bed was a crib. It was soft and white. Little Hitomi looked and noticed that there was another room connected to this. She grabbed the tray and walked towards the entry way to the room. As she turned the corner she stopped. The woman was wrapped in white, her soft blue hair flowing onto the floor. She sat in a rocking chair, her head down and a baby in her arms. Little Hitomi looked down at the tray and noticed her hands were empty. She looked up and noticed the Angel was looking at her. Little Hitomi felt the woman's blue eyes eat her apart until she was too scared to move. She pulled away and bent down to pick up the mess she had made. Her hands were like jell-o, refusing to do what she wanted them to do.
“Let me help.” The Celestial Angel said, her voice like a velvety blanket, coating Little Hitomi in a sense of relief. She watched as the Celestial Angel waved her hand and the items on the tray went back threw time until they were in front of her again, all tidy and neat. Little Hitomi grabbed the tray and walked over to where the woman was. She was beautiful. The Celestial Angel was supreme, her body young and her teeth perfect, unlike what Little Hitomi had imagined. She took the bottle off the tray and smiled at Little Hitomi, who blushed back. The Celestial Angel laughed and Little Hitomi watched as she fed the child. The child had white hair and she had her mothers midnight eyes, pulling Little Hitomi in again. Quickly she looked away and she felt the Celestial's hand on her shoulder. “Do you not like children?” The Celestial asked Little Hitomi. Little Hitomi shook her head; that wasn't it.
“Your eyes are the same. They scare me.” Little Hitomi couldn't help but say how she felt. The Celestial stood up, her hair flowing behind her as she set the child down in another crib, this one bigger than the one by the bed. Little Hitomi watched the Celestial as she sat back down with a small egg shaped box in her hands.
“Does this scare you, Hitomi?” The Celestial Angel spoke and it made Little Hitomi nervous to hear the woman speak her name. Little Hitomi shook her head; it was just a box that was shaped like an egg. There wasn't anything scary about it.
“It's just a box.” Little Hitomi replied unsure of what the Celestial Angel was trying to prove to her. The Celestial Angel nodded and looked at the little girl.
“What if I told you this wasn't a box at all. Would you believe me?” The Angel said. Hitomi shook her head again.
“But I can see it's a box. You can't tell me to believe something if it isn't true.” Little Hitomi said, focusing intently on those midnight blues eyes that the Celestial Angel had. Within the eyes were warmth and happiness. It sucked her in and hugged her, making her feel safer.
“What about now?” The Celestial Angel said as she waved her fingers over the box, turning it in to a small, screaming ogre head. Little Hitomi screamed and shook with fear.
“But it was a box!! How?!” Little Hitomi rubbed the tears from her eyes as The Celestial Angel snapped and changed the ogre's head back into a small egg like box. Little Hitomi felt the Angel put the box in her hands. It was heavy and it was cold. The details on it were small and plenty. The Celestial Angel smiled.
“You believed it was a box, so you were surprised when it wasn't any longer. Correct?” The Celestial Angel spoke, intoxicating Little Hitomi with her soft voice.
“Yes.” Little Hitomi said, her eyes back on the Angel's. The Celestial Angel held her hand out to Little Hitomi and waved her other hand over the small egg box. Little Hitomi plugged her ears with her childish fingers and waited for the ogre's head to scream and yell. But it never came. The box stayed the same and the Celestial Angel was smiling. Hitomi put her hands down and grabbed the egg box, shaking it to make sure that it was real. The Celestial Angel laughed and looked at the girl. “But it was an ogre's head! I swear!” Little Hitomi cried.
“Of course it was. It was what ever you though I was going to be.” The Celestial Angel added. Little Hitomi looked up at the woman and frowned. She didn't know how the Angel knew, but she felt guilty. Very guilty.
“So, are you like the box? Because when I saw the box, I just figured it was one thing, but really it was another. And then when I accepted what I was going to see, it was just itself…” Little Hitomi stringed the pieces together, trying to make sense of it. The Celestial Angel nodded and smiled. Little Hitomi smiled, proud that she had gotten the puzzle and solved it.
“Would you like to join me for tea Hitomi-chan?” The Celestial Angel asked the young girl, while she had gotten up to pour tea. Little Hitomi looked at the beautiful woman and smiled.
“Yes please!”
---------------------- END FLASH BACK -----------------------
Hitomi's hands were covered in her tears. Not many were holding them back. Kuwabara had broken down and was sobbing while Yukina's tears were clanking against the floor. Even master Genkai had to use a tissue to wipe away tears that were threatening to roll down her face. She had never heard so much sorrow in one story.
“How could so many people hate someone so passionately without even knowing them?!” Yusuke cried out. He was furious that someone had put that woman through so much trouble, even so far as to tell her that her daughter would never exist to them.
“It's wrong, but we all do it.” Hitomi spoke through her tears.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ FLASH BACK ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hitomi ran down the streets of the Ningenkai, turning corners, trying to find Ren-sama. It was late afternoon and the teenager was frustrated after Ren-sama had taken off without warning.
{She promised she'd take me with!!}
The girl rounded a corner and ran straight into someone, knocking both of them backwards. Hitomi inwardly cursed to herself about stupid ningens thinking they could walk every where they wanted to.
“I'm sorry, I didn't see you.” A strong, deep voice echoed in her ears as she stood up, dusting herself off. She looked up with her mouth ready to yell at who ever had knocked her over; then she saw him.
“Oh, Uhm…I'm not hurt.” Hitomi replied, looking at his beautiful blue eyes. They were the color of the sky, pale and yet still so vibrant. He laughed at her and pushed a hair out of her face.
“I didn't mean it that way. I meant how could I not see such beauty walking straight into my life?” The boy spoke eloquently, capturing Hitomi's heart. She felt her stomach tighten and she felt her heart race.
“Uh…Uhm…” Hitomi's throat felt closed, like something was lodged in there. She turned a deep shade of red, her cheeks feeling all warm. The boy smiled at her.
“You're blushing.” He said. Hitomi's eyes widened and she looked around.
“Uhm… no!” She tried to defend herself from the boy's mysterious magic over her.
“I'm Konosuke Norimatsu. Would you like to get ice cream with me?” The boy spoke again, causing Hitomi to feel odd.
{Ko..no..suke?}
“Uhh…what is ice-cream?” Hitomi asked the boy. He smiled and grabbed her hand. Slowly they walked together, her hand tightly in his. She smiled, her cheeks still red, but her stomach was starting to feel better.
“Konosuke, can I ask you a question?” Hitomi asked when they had their ice cream. She had enjoyed the taste of the ningen treat. It was sweet and cold, unlike anything they had in Heaven.
“Of course.” Konosuke looked at Hitomi. No, rather, he looked INTO her. She smiled.
“Do you believe in Heaven and Angels?” Hitomi said, positive that he wouldn't and it would be wasted time spent.
“Of course, you were sent to me, I have to believe in Angels.” Konosuke said, rest his hand on Hitomi's. She smiled and held his tightly.
“Uhm… by the way…I'm Hitomi.” Hitomi stammered. She was getting better at talking to him, but it was going to take some time. Konosuke laughed when she blushed again and she giggled too.
“Good to see you are having fun Hitomi-chan. But I'm afraid we have to leave now.” A voice came from behind Hitomi. She turned around and found Ren-sama, smiling at her. Hitomi remembered why she was here and glared at Ren.
“Where have you been?! I was looking all over for YOU! That's when I bumped into… uh…oh yeah…Konosuke.” Hitomi turned and looked at the boy. He stood up and he smiled at the older woman.
“I'm Konosuke Norimatsu, are you Hitomi's sister?” Konosuke asked Ren. Ren laughed and nodded. Hitomi wanted to say no, but it would be weird to explain. Besides, Hitomi had always wished that Ren was her sister or mother. It was a fair trade.
“Say your good byes Hitomi-chan. I'll wait outside.” Ren walked out of the ice cream place and Hitomi turned to face Konosuke. The boy pulled her close and hugged her tightly. She smiled and blushed fiercely, causing him to smile harder.
“Will I see you again?” Hitomi asked Konosuke. She wanted to see him again. And again. She wanted to see him every day. Konosuke laughed and handed her a piece of paper. On it was written his address and telephone number. Hitomi nodded and she looked down. She wasn't going to be back for a while. She didn't want him to forget her!
“I won't forget you, Angel.” Konosuke smiled and he kissed Hitomi's cheek. She shivered from the touch, her body warmed up from her heart racing so fast. Hitomi walked outside and waved good bye to the boy.
{I'll find you Konosuke! I promise!}
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ END FLASH BACK ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hitomi smiled and pushed her red bangs back. Yusuke and Kuwabara were awed that such lines actually worked in real life.
“You just, went with him!?” Yusuke said, surprised that he hadn't ever tried those with Keiko. Keiko looked at him and shook her head.
“Yeah, it was perfect. He was sincere and I was foolish.” Hitomi recounted.
-------------------- FLASH BACK --------------------
Hitomi waited on the steps in her festival dress. She watched as all the other couples walked by, laughing and smiling, kissing and being all loving. Hitomi grew frustrated, waiting and waiting. Then, he was there, at the bottom of the stairs.
“Konosuke! Up here!” Hitomi yelled down to the boy with his festival wear on too. He smiled, his blue eyes bleeding into her body again and taking all the pain away. Quickly he ran to the top and swept Hitomi off her feet. She laughed and kissed him, melted into him, and loved him. He grabbed her hand and they walked back down to the festival.
“You look so divine tonight. Don't you know that?” Konosuke said, kissing Hitomi's cheek lightly. She laughed and he smiled. Slowly they wandered the festival and ended up at the end, when the lights were going off and the venders closing down. They made their way back to the temple and both bought a love charm before it closed down for the night.
“What took you so long Konosuke!? I never got to ask you that question!” Hitomi poked her boyfriend in the ribs. He bent over, causing his black hair to ruffle. When he stood back up, he was holding a black box, taken from his pocket. Hitomi looked at the box, a familiar shape that she had seen some where.
“This is what took so long Hitomi.” Konosuke gave the box to the girl. Hitomi looked at it and opened it to find a beautiful ring staring her right in the face. She remembered where she had seen it: a TV commercial was playing when she was at Konosuke's house one day and she mentioned how much she loved the shiny gems. Quickly her heart raced and she looked up at her boyfriend.
“Uhm…uh… what is this for?!” Hitomi choked on her words.
“Marry me Hitomi! I want to tell the entire world just how much I LOVE YOU!” Konosuke screamed the last part, doing just what he wanted to do: let everyone know how madly in love he was. “I want to take care of you; I want to see you every morning I wake up, every night I close my eyes to sleep, and every moment in between that! We've been dating for 6 years, and I want to see you wear that ring. I want you to be mine forever!” Konosuke laughed, got down on one knee and smiled. Hitomi laughed.
“OF COURSE!” Hitomi giggled.
“I LOVE YOU!” Konosuke said, kissing his new fiancé and trying to get the ring out of the box to put on her finger. When they finally got it on, she was crying tears of happiness and he was holding her tightly.
“Do I ever tell you how much I love you?” Hitomi whispered to her fiancé. She pushed herself apart from Konosuke and looked deep into his eyes.
“I love you, Hitomi.”
“I love you Konosuke.”
--------------------------- END FLASH BACK ---------------------------
Botan and Keiko were `awwwwing' and `ooooowwwing' through the entire story, listening to how romantic it was. Keiko nudged Yusuke a few times to make sure he was catching it. Kuwabara was trying to take mental notes in his head. Hiei was thinking what he was going to do if everyone started proposing in cool ways. He would be screwed.
“So? Did you get married?!?” Botan asked the Guardian. She smiled for a moment and then spoke.
“We wanted to, but that was when… well… a lot happened before the wedding.” Hitomi's heart felt lighter now, thinking about Konosuke and how much she loved him.
“Well?” Genkai said suddenly, wanting more of the story. Everyone looked at her and found that she was smiling and enjoying the sappy love story. Hitomi laughed and everyone around her was startled. Kurama smiled at her.
“You really love him, that's a beautiful thing. So why didn't you marry?” Kurama asked the Guardian who nodded.
“That's when…”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ FLASH BACK ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“REN-SAMA!” Hitomi ran through the castle covered in blood; it wasn't her own, but rather one of the four Guardians who were supposed to protect the Angels. The girl wanted to come back and check on her favorite two people in the entire world. Instead she found people slaughtered along the hallways of the castle. “REN-SAMA!!!” Hitomi kept calling out, watching as more people lined the hall ways. Finally Hitomi made it to the Celestial Angel's bedroom and she saw that one of the doors was knocked in and that another was on its hinges. She ran in and went straight to the cradle next to the big bed. Inside was little Satu, her face peaceful and her eyes shut tight with sleep. Quickly and carefully she picked up the sleeping toddler and held her in her arms.
“REN-SAMA!!” Hitomi yelled again, not afraid to wake up Satu. Quickly the girl checked the other rooms in the castle and headed to find the Elders.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Elders <<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hitomi jumped over the shattered pieces of glass in the hallways. She could hear the screaming and yelling coming from the Elder's room. The dome was broken in pieces, some falling in. Lights were glowing every where, power was thick in the air as Hitomi carried the small child to where she assumed safety was. She slowed down when she heard voices.
“…I won't have you teaching her to hate humans! Not my daughter and not my people!” Hitomi recognized the voice as Ren's. She wanted to rush in and tell her that her people needed her and they were dying.
“She never was supposed to exist! You went and disobeyed laws that have been set for millennia! You are no longer fit to have any part of your people! THEY HATE YOU! YOU ARE A DISGRACE!” An Elder said. Hitomi couldn't place which one it was… but she knew that it was only one Elder voice.
“You have over stepped your boundaries. DIE!” Ren's voice screamed and Hitomi rushed into the room to stop Ren from hurting the Elders. There was a bright light and then an explosion. Glass shattered and the dome started to fall. Walls caved in and crushed everything like little bugs. Hitomi tried to run for it as the walls came in, but she couldn't make it… she threw her body over Satu's and watched as a wall of solid rock poured over her body.
