Chapter 11: Debate and Depart
Hitomi felt Botan and Keiko hold her close as she broke free of her mental restraints. It was the first time that she had ever told anyone what happened that night. Not even Satu remembered it. The weight of the secret had crushed her; buried all of her happiness for years. But now, now it was out. She was free from the secret, or at least as free as she could get.
“Oh…oh my god…” Genkai gasped, her eyes leaking like Niagara Falls . She put her hand on Hitomi's and watched as the young Angel cried hysterically. Hiei couldn't take the sobbing and the sadness. He wanted to be free of all the pain in the room. The secrets were unbearable.
“Hitomi-sama…What happened after that?” Kurama pushed the Guardian on further. Keiko and Botan shot the kitsune an evil glare.
“Don't you CARE?! Have you no heart!? Kurama, she's torn up!” Keiko yelled at the insensitive demon. Hitomi hiccupped and held a hand up to Keiko, who was ready to beat the youkai into a pulp.
“No, he's right,” Hitomi regained her composure. “There's more.” Keiko and Botan cast dirty looks at the fox as Hitomi spoke once more.
“Continue Hitomi-sama.” Genkai spoke softly.
“When I awoke in the hospital, I was told that all the Elders, Guardians, and the staffs of the castle were dead. They told me I was the only one to survive. I freaked out! I thought `Where is Satu!?' They told me that she was fine, in the nursery, playing with toys. I eventually was strong enough to see her, and I met with the new Elder select. They asked me what happened, they begged me to talk about it- but I couldn't.” Hitomi's eyes were still constant with tears.
“No one blames you.” Yusuke added in, empathetically.
“I know, but… I took it upon myself to raise Satu. They disagreed. They told me that I would live in the castle with Satu and would be watched. They didn't trust me. Not that I ever blamed them. It could have been me, killing all those people.” Hitomi sighed, rubbing her eyes and pushing back her red bangs. The room was so silent, it was scary.
“Why didn't you ever tell them what happened?” Kuwabara asked the Angel. Hitomi stared at him. Surprised that he would speak during the conversation. He just didn't seem that smart.
“I had a duty to Ren-sama. I was to protect Satu and to raise her and keep her from destroying herself. I watched as the entire population blamed Ren-sama for the killings. I know she didn't do it. I know she didn't have a choice if she did. They were out for her blood and she couldn't stand by and let them idly slaughter her in front of her child. For all she knew, SATU could have been NEXT!” Hitomi's anger grew. All the fear that had been suppressed was pouring out of her in its new form of rage and determination. “When Ren-sama transferred the power between Satu and I, she gave us both unequaled powers and abilities. Eventually I was chosen as a new Guardian, by the then new Elders. Most of us were young and didn't understand our new duties. I knew it was my choice to oversee how the Angel public looked at humans. Ren-sama was right, that I should be careful in the selection of the Elders… especially how they viewed the Demons and the Humans. I didn't really have a choice in who was selected, but I had a say in what they did.”
“Hitomi-sama, what happened to Konosuke and you getting married?” Yukina asked politely. Hitomi smiled at the girl, her big eyes seeping into Hitomi's soul.
“I returned a while later, after I was finally trusted again…”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ FLASH BACK ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“HITOMI! Where have you been?!” Konosuke ran and hugged his fiancé. Hitomi's face was stone cold, it was solid, it was heartless.
“Konosuke, things have changed. I can't marry you anymore.” Hitomi spoke harshly. She had to hurt him, had to make sure he wouldn't try to find her or cause trouble. Her life was different now, she had new responsibilities and she didn't have time to be the wife of a human.
“You don't mean that…Hitomi…Hitomi-chan! TAKE IT BACK!!” Konosuke shook Hitomi, his eyes tearing up. She could feel it, could feel his heart breaking in two. What a fool he was to think they could ever exist together. She couldn't cry, couldn't think about what she was really feeling. Her heart was screaming, was burning, was hating. It wanted her to run away with Satu, to start a life in the Ningenkai instead of just an existence in Heaven.
“I have to go now, Konosuke. Let go. I have a duty. Please let go.” Hitomi begged the sobbing man, who held to her waist tightly, trying to make her change her mind. Hitomi's brain was fried from the chaos of leaving Satu alone for one day. She wanted to hurry back to the little girl, to get her heart break off her mind, but it clung to her. It clung to her just like Konosuke.
“You have a duty to me too! You have a duty to love me! Ren-sama knew that! Ask her! Ask Ren-sama! She will set you straight!” Konosuke said to Hitomi. Hitomi felt her body fly out of her control. Her arms pushed Konosuke to the ground, the rage taking over her.
“REN-SAMA IS DEAD!! You understand me!? DEAD! My duty is to protect her daughter! Ren-sama told me I have a duty, and that's what she meant!! She's DEAD and that's what SHE MEANT!” Hitomi screamed. She didn't want to believe it was over, the love she had, she still felt it. But it had to end. No more waking up to Konosuke's face. No more sleeping under his comfy sheets. No more ice cream. No more laughter and sunshine.
“Ren-sama wouldn't force you to leave the one you love. You're duty is to yourself. And you know that she meant that. I love you Hitomi! Can't you see how much I love you?! Bring her daughter here! We'll live TOGETHER! We can raise her as our own! I want to be with you! ALWAYS!” Konosuke cried. The street was empty of passerby. Hitomi shook her head and turned away, a tear escaping. It was so hard to give up all that she loved. First Ren-sama, then Konosuke. She would never give up Satu. Never. Satu was now her life. And that was that.
“This is my choice Konosuke. Good bye.” Hitomi turned around and stepped towards the street. Konosuke sat there, on the dirty city ground, staring at Hitomi; a broken man. He watched as she spread her wings, as she was surrounded by glowing light.
“My…Angel….” Konosuke's voice broke, along with his heart. When the light was gone, and Hitomi had vanished, Konosuke found a ring. It was big and it was beautiful, and he had bought it for Hitomi. But now she was gone.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ END FLASHBACK ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hitomi sighed as the girls continued to cry. Hiei felt sickened by the turn of events. Genkai wasn't sure what this meant for the little Angel in the other room, but she was sure that it was all connected.
“You should have stayed with him.” Hiei said. Hitomi glared at him, her eyes full of hatred and regret.
“I had no choice.” Hitomi spat out at the Jaganshi.
“Love always has a choice.” Hiei spoke clearly as she walked out of the room. He didn't want to hear anymore of the depressing Angel history. All he wanted was to see his one and only… and to tell her how much he loved her and would always… and perhaps to threaten her about the fact that she was never allowed to make Hitomi's mistake and leave him. But that might be able to wait.
“He's right.” Kuwabara agreed. Yusuke looked at the carrot-top with shock. It was the first time that Kuwabara had ever agreed with Hiei.
{He's got to be trying to get on Hiei's good side because of Yukina…} Yusuke thought.
“Yes. Love always has a choice.” Genkai smiled, her memories of love floating around her. It made her feel warm, like someone's arms were wrapping around her.
“I think that maybe we should all, get some sleep.” Kurama said quietly as he rose and stretched. His body was telling him it was time for some well deserved rest, and he mostly had answers to the questions he wanted.
“I think that's a great idea.” Hitomi agreed as she flattened out her lilac kimono. The gang all nodded and they decided to sleep instead of chat amongst themselves for the few remaining hours of darkness. Kurama walked down past Satu's room and stopped in to check on the girls. The door slid open quietly and he saw Emi and Satu asleep, both curled up next to one another. It was so innocent and sweet, that it almost burnt right through him.
{What will happen to you? Now that you've got such an immense weight on your shoulders. I can only imagine that you'll either succeed without fail or your fail successfully.}
“Kitsune… Do you mind not standing in the way of the bedroom?” A voice whispered behind him. He turned his head and saw Hitomi, glancing at him. She was looking at his odd behavior. But Kurama couldn't help but feel some what attached to the girl with flowing white hair. She was sewn into him. It often hurt to think about her, like maybe he had known her before.
“Of course Hitomi-sama.” Kurama stepped aside and let Hitomi enter the room. She stood at the doorway and stared at the fox.
“Don't try to pull it back out fox, she's hidden it too far away.” Hitomi said before closing the bedroom door. Kurama stared long after Hitomi had closed the door. His brain was trying to figure out what she had meant. It felt like he was so close to the answer, but just couldn't find it.
“This frustration is maddening…” Kurama sighed as he walked to his room and shut the door. Hiei wasn't in it, nor outside by the tree, so Kurama figured he must be out slashing away some priceless piece of wood. A sort of envy fell upon Kurama when he thought about how close he and Satu were acting lately; like they were….
“Lovers?”
