Chapter 13: The BetIs On

Satu woke to the sound of metal hitting metal, a distinct smell of bruises and dirt, and the distant feeling of a chest panting. She looked to her side and noticed the boy in black, her Hiei, was soundly asleep; his arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Satu's face broke into a happy smile, even thought she knew she had to wiggle out of the Jaganshi's grasp.

“Hiei…let go…wake up…” Satu whispered. The boy's eyes shot open, confused and worried. He looked at the angel's smile and his gaze softened, knowing that there was no present danger. Hiei pulled Satu closer to him, hugging her waist as she sat up in the bed. The angel looked at him and chuckled softly. “Aren't you being affectionate?”

“Hnnn.”

“Let's get up.” Satu offered. Hiei closed his eyes and felt her warmth and pure energy surround him. It provided him with a sense of comfort that he wasn't ready to relinquish yet. He hadn't remembered ever sleeping that well.

“Onna…” Hiei grabbed at Satu's sleep clothes as she tried to sneak over him; pulling her right over him, her face on his, her body on his. Both blushed and Hiei gently lifted her over him.

“Y-y-yes?” Satu asked, her blushing getting redder. Hiei pulled himself back to reality.

“Hnn.” He responded, getting off the bed and walking out of the room. Satu sighed and pulled herself together before she wandered back into her bedroom.

Kurama sat at the counter, stirring the cup of tea and watching Botan and Keiko make breakfast. The two girls chatted about boys and other troubles they had, occasionally asking Kurama for his advice or preference.

“Morning, Botan, Keiko, Kurama…” A voice said as it entered the kitchen. Kurama looked up at a white haired angel. Satu sat next to him and poured herself a cup of tea.

{Something's different…}Youko thought.

“Good morning. How are you?” Kurama asked quickly, before the girls could suck Satu into a more girly conversation. The angel looked at him intently and smiled.

“I'm amazing, thank you.”

“You seem different today, Satu.” Kurama pushed. The girl gave him an odd look, pondering what the kitsune must be thinking.

“I do feel a bit different. More in-tune with the human world!”

“Perhaps that is it; your maturity seems much higher in regards as to how ningen's live.” Kurama smiled, gently looking over the girl. She did seem more into the ningenkai. It was almost as if she had lived there for a while. Kurama inwardly sighed and drank more of the tea.

“That's got to be it!” Botan said, turning around with a large spatula in her hand. Kurama and Satu leaned back a bit, afraid that Botan might lose it. Botan smiled weakly and pulled the spatula back towards the food. “Sorry…”

“It's okay Botan!” Satu laughed. Her laughter filled the room and Kurama's heart once again. He tried to memorize its rhythm but it wouldn't stay still in his mind.

“What are you up to today?” Another voice entered the room, coming from Hitomi in the doorway. She looked at Satu deeply and curiously.

“I was going into town. I haven't been there really…” Satu smiled as fake as she could. Kurama looked at the angel and laughed. Her lying was in the need of some serious work.

“SAAAAATTTTUUUUU!!! Hitomi found out you weren't in the room all night!!!” Emi came bouncing into the room, skidding into the dinning room table and then past the counter and into Hitomi. “Oh, morning Hitomi!” “SATU!” Emi ran back to Satu, grabbing her arm and whispering in her ear.

“Emi.” Hitomi sighed. Keiko and Botan laughed while Kurama listened intently on the conversation.

“Yes, Hitomi?” Emi looked at Hitomi and then at Satu, and then back at Hitomi in surprise. “HITOMI?!” Emi gasped, confused at how she missed the woman. Satu shrugged and held her head in her hands, trying not to laugh out loud.

“What are you doing?” Hitomi asked the bouncy girl.

“Warning Satu that you're mad at her!” Emi spoke loudly.

“You've just about warned the entire temple.” Satu laughed. Emi laughed too. Hitomi stared at the two angels until they quieted down. Both of them looked down and Hitomi gazed at the two.

“Are you going to explain where you were? Or do I have to guess?” Hitomi asked. Satu looked at Emi, who looked at Satu. Both of their mouths were sealed tight, no secret escaping them.

“Swimming.” Kurama said. Hitomi shot a glare at the fox. “Honestly. Satu came to me and told me she couldn't sleep, so I told her that I always swim in the lake when I can't sleep. She asked me to show her the lake and then she went in for a swim.” Kurama lied more convincingly than Satu could ever. Hitomi sighed and walked out of the room.

“THANK YOU! But you do remember that I can't swim… right?” Satu laughed and hugged the kitsune, who nodded and smiled back at her. Keiko and Botan giggled and went back to making food.

Hiei watched as Yusuke and Kuwabara fought in the back yard of Genkai's temple. Genkai sat outside, yelling at the dumb moron to keep his guard up. Yusuke attempted to yell back and fight Kuwabara at the same time.

“Shut up Grandma! I'm doing my best!” Yusuke yelled, turning his head to glare at the woman, giving Kuwabara enough time to throw in a left hook. Yusuke hit the pavement and yelled at the old woman for breaking his concentration. Hiei sighed and looked away, trying to sense where his angel was.

“Here.” A voice called from the bottom of the tree. Hiei teetered on the branch before he caught himself from falling. The white haired ocean-eyed girl smiled at him. He looked her up and down. She was wearing a long white skirt and a blue t-shirt, her white hair braided into long pigtails. Hiei felt his stomach explode into leaping and bouncing explosions. It felt good to feel so unexpected.

“Took long enough.” Hiei mentioned. Satu beckoned the Jaganshi down from the tree. The boy jumped down and watched as Yukina brought some fruit juice to her beloved Kuwabara. The moron smiled and Yukina laughed happily.

{I have no room to judge I suppose…} Hiei thought to himself.

“What's on your mind?” Satu asked. Hiei looked back to the angel and shook his head.

“Nothing.” He replied. Hiei looked Satu up and down, taking in the full figure of the angel. She was petite, which made him more scared about her venturing out into the Makai, even with her demonic blood.

{Demonic blood, it's not even likely that she'll be able to harness it.}

“Let's start!” Satu grinned, she stuck her fists up like a boxer would. Hiei shook his head and nodded, pulling his angel to the make-shift rink so that she could practice. Satu felt the warm pressure of his hand on hers and smiled, happy that she would be practicing with her favorite Koorime.

“There is no real way to start, onna. You just have to be able to summon any powers you have.” Hiei said as the two of them stood in the arena area. Satu tried to feel any power inside her; she tried to summon it up to the surface of her mind. It felt like a long empty pit all the way down.

“I don't think I can just… ASK…. for it. It won't come out.” Satu scrunched her face tight, like she was fighting her own insides for a power. Hiei sighed and walked towards her.

“Try doing something to me.” Hiei asked seriously. Satu looked at him wide eyed and blushed. Hiei looked at her and inwardly chuckled. He hadn't meant that, but now thoughts were racing in his mind. “I meant attack me.” Hiei clarified. Satu nodded, looking at Hiei intently. Her eyes traced over his body and his face. She raised her hand and pushed forward an image of him floating in the air, just dangling above the ground. And it was there. Hiei was floating in front of her his legs a foot above the safe ground. His face wasn't shocked or startled, just intently fixed upon Satu's. Satu looked at the Jaganshi and then to her hand in front of her face, holding in to the invisible chord that dangled her beloved demon in the air. “Hnn. Telekinesis.” Hiei muttered. Satu smiled and clapped her hands, sending Hiei straight for the ground. Lucky for her he was only a foot up.

“Sorry!” Satu ran forward and tried to comfort the no-where-near-hurt Jaganshi. He looked at her as she checked around him for any broken bones or scratches. He sighed and she looked at him again, content that he was safe from injury.

“Try again.” Hiei said, “and this time… don't rush over if you hurt me.”

Yusuke and Kuwabara played cards on the table while Yukina helped Botan and Keiko in the kitchen. The constant smell of large batches of food made for hungry appetites. Kurama carried a conversation with Genkai about the usage of Makai plants and the epidemic that was sweeping the Northern most parts of the Makai. Emi watched as Hitomi showed her an old book on origami.

“Where are those two?” Hitomi finally asked the group without moving her body or head from helping Emi master the crane. Yusuke shrugged and looked at Keiko and Botan, who were the most knowledgeable in finding the growingly curious angel.

“FOOD Time!” Satu yelled as she walked inside, her hair messy and a bit of her skirt cut off. Following her was a slightly singed and beat up Hiei who dared not look at the others, less he give them a glare of death.

“WOOOO!! Hiei- ya look like you almost got killed!” Yusuke laughed, slapping his knee. Kuwabara looked at the Koorime carefully, so as not to provoke any karma that pertained to his and Yukina's relationship. Hiei glared at the two of them and everyone else in the room. He wandered down the hall and into another room so that he could change.

“He's angry because I have a good resource of powers.” Satu smiled. Hitomi looked at her, scared that maybe the angel had been trying to access her demonic power without knowing the proper way to use it.

“Satu, what were you doing?” Emi asked for Hitomi. Satu looked at the pink haired servant and smiled.

“Getting ready to go and look for any traces of my mom in the Makai.” Satu said happily.

“But your mom died… didn't she?” Kuwabara asked the girl, looking at Hitomi, who threw her head in her hands. Satu looked at the boy, confused.

“Hitomi, you told me that mom wasn't in Heaven. You never told me she was DEAD!” Satu cried out. Hitomi looked at the girl, whose eyes were watering and dangerously upset. Hitomi wanted to run from the room; afraid to provoke another lengthy conversation about why she never told Satu anything.

“What other lies are you telling her?” Hiei added in.

“So it continues…” Kurama growled at the Guardian.
