Yusuke and Kuwabara hadn't been gone long before they came back to find Kurama shutting the bedroom door and heading to the bathroom to pour out the now bloody water. Yusuke set Hiei's bag down by the chair and walked for the kitchen while Kuwabara sat down on the couch. After a few moments Kurama walked back into the living room and sat down on the chair with his legs crossed; Yusuke soon joined the party sitting beside Kuwabara.
“How is he?” the brown eyed teenager asked, his expression concerned but annoyed in more ways than one.
“Sleeping,” Kurama replied coolly as he brushed his bangs from his stunning emerald eyes. Kuwabara leaned forward with his elbows on his thighs and put his hands on the back of his neck.
“Good,” the orange-head said, “The shrimp could use some safe sleep.”
“What the hell happened?” Yusuke asked as he set his soda can down on the table beside the couch.
“Isn't it obvious?” Kurama questioned, “Yoma must have found him and raped him. It's lucky that we found him or it probably would have happened again.”
“But how did Yoma know where Hiei was?” Kuwabara asked as he looked up. His voice was serious and casual in a way. He was talking in that `I'm level headed, go with it' tone that he didn't seem to have all that often.
Kurama gave a graceful shrug, “It was a bar. Maybe he followed Hiei there. What happened with that dead bar-tender, Yusuke?”
“Called the police and told them we found the body but one of our friends was hurt so we couldn't be there when they got there. No names and I changed my voice,” Yusuke said and leaned back, rubbing his eyes. Kurama gave a slight nod and looked off to the side, glancing out the window with slightly distant green eyes.
“How did you know where he'd be Kurama?” Kuwabara asked after a few moments of silence. Kurama looked back to the two boys with a cool exterior.
“It was a lucky guess; Hiei's mentioned the place before. Never much though so I wasn't sure if he'd be there,” the bright eyed youth said. Yusuke looked off to the right, as though he didn't believe it but he didn't want Kurama to read his eyes and know that. Kurama didn't pay much mind to the movement; he wasn't lying so he had nothing to worry about.
Kuwabara shook his head and stood up and crossed the room for the door without looking back at the guys.
“Where are you going?” Yusuke asked, irritation mixed in with his voice.
”I'm going to pick up some stuff from my house. I'm staying here to help watch after the punk,” Kuwabara said and walked out before a protest could be made. Kurama and Yusuke both watched him leave then looked back to each other.
“So are you staying too?” Yusuke asked. Kurama shook his head and stood up, straightening out his worn blue-jeans.
“I have to help Mother with some things tonight. I'll stop by later if I can,” he said and crossed the floor to the front door.
“Yeah, sure,” Yusuke said and looked off to the side with his own set of absent eyes. Kurama's brow furrowed as he turned sharply to face the raven haired teenager.
“Why are you talking to me like this is my fault?” he interrogated. Yusuke shrugged and grabbed his soda as he stood up to move for the kitchen.
“Just seems kind of weird that the note was found at your house and that you knew where Hiei would be. If Yoma snuck into anyone's house I thought it would have been mine considering Hiei's usually here,” Yusuke told him. Yusuke's house was easier for Hiei to be at because Atsuko either didn't notice or didn't much care while Shiori was a bit stricter about things like friends over.
“I told you, it was a lucky guess. I don't know why that note was found there, why don't you know anything about what it said?” Kurama snapped back in his cool voice. He could be as annoyed as ever but his voice always seemed cool.
“Because it was a fucking fake! I haven't talked to Yoma in years! I haven't talked to him since we know he's been here!” Yusuke yelled.
“You could be lying, Yusuke!” Kurama shouted.
“So could you!” Yusuke roared back. Kurama and Yusuke glared at each other for a while before Kurama turned swiftly on his heel and walked out, closing the door behind him. Yusuke watched him leave then turned and strode into the kitchen, throwing his empty can into the sink with a loud crash. He let out a frustrated yell as he ran his hands back through his dark black hair and looked down into the sink.
What gave Kurama the right to assume he'd been the one lying? What kind of supreme authority let that jerk decide that he was siding with Yoma against Hiei? He'd known Hiei before Kurama had! He was the one that found Hiei's bruises that day and he was the one that let Hiei sneak into his window all those nights when the child was crying and bleeding. Kurama didn't come along until a year later yet he was the one acting like he knew what was best for Hiei! Yusuke shook his head and rested his head on his crossed arms on the sink.
Maybe Kurama did have the right. From the second they met the red-head Hiei was immediately attracted, he was obvious about it in his own ways. Hiei seemed to talk about things with Kurama that he didn't tell Yusuke. In truth that annoyed Yusuke for months because he was Hiei's best friend and Kurama joined and suddenly it was like Yusuke was second best. After a while he realized he was stupid, Hiei just liked Kurama in a way he didn't like Yusuke. That way that was a little bit more than friend's. It didn't bug him…then he thought he might have started feeling for Hiei what Hiei felt for Kurama. He shook his head at the thought, that couldn't be right. He knew he was straight…wasn't he? He turned on the water and splashed some cold water on his face then wiped it off with a paper towel and threw it in the garbage. He was straight, he knew it, he'd never questioned his sexuality and he wouldn't now.
With a light sigh Yusuke turned to walk out of the kitchen and headed for the bathroom. Maybe all he needed now was a shower, a cold one would probably work better. He needed ice cold water screaming `SNAP OUT OF IT YUSUKE!' pouring down on him right now. He kicked his shoes off towards the door and walked into the bathroom, quietly closing the door behind him. He sat on the closed toilet lid and pulled his socks off, then removed his shirt, jeans, and boxers. He walked over to the mirror that hung above the sink to look at himself. He was surprised at what he saw.
He looked tired, worn, and worried. His eyes had little bags under them and seemed lazy and out of focus. His hair was unkempt and his skin looked paler than usual, especially because he seemed to tan in the summer. He moved his face closer to the mirror and pulled his lower eyelid down to look at the underside…to see if they were white. He wasn't sick, just exhausted. He shook his head and walked over to the shower, pushing aside the curtain he reached in and turned on the water. He ran his fingers under it, adding only the littlest bit of heat so he wouldn't freeze, then stepped in.
The water poured over his dry skin, pounding down on his head making his hair drip and get soaked through. He bowed his head slightly; letting the water beat down on the back of his neck then cascade down his well toned back. He shuddered as the coldness of it sunk in then looked up to face into the water with his eyes closed. It moved down onto his face, cooling him off from the summer's heat and his previous irritations. It almost felt like the cold was washing away all the bad feelings and leaving only his freezing body. It made him feel better, but made him feel empty in a way as well.
The now cold teenager let his head bow and the water strike down against his back again as his thoughts dove into Hiei again. He remembered back to that day he found out Hiei's dad was abusive and the first day Hiei snuck in through his window at night. That was back before his mom and he had moved into an apartment though, back when they owned a house.
It was really late, almost eleven, and Yusuke was only about eight at the time. It was dark outside and his mom had `sent him to bed' but he was lying there reading a magazine with his bedside table light on.
“Yusuke! Go to bed!” his mom yelled from down the hall.
“Yeah yeah!” Yusuke shouted back. There was about a five minute pause before his mom yelled at him to turn the light off again or he'd be grounded. He put the magazine on the bedside table and rolled over to turn his light off when two red eyes appeared in his window. He jumped out of bed and ran over to the partly closed curtains and pulled them open to show Hiei behind them. There entire house was only one level so the fact Hiei was outside his window wasn't too confusing.
“Hiei?” Yusuke asked in surprise. Hiei blinked but then winced, he had a black eye and it looked like someone had punched him right in the jaw.
“Can I stay at your house tonight?” Hiei asked. Yusuke looked back at his bedroom door and then back to Hiei.
“Yeah,” Yusuke said and pulled over a chair from his desk. He stood up and held a hand out to Hiei, who soon took it. Together, Hiei pushing from outside and Yusuke pulling from inside, they got Hiei into the house. He practically fell in and landed on Yusuke with twin `Oopfs!' and then hushed snickers.
“Yusuke what are you doing in there?” Atsuko called.
“Nothing mom!” Yusuke shouted as they got up.
“Turn off that light and get into bed right now!” she yelled. Quickly and quietly Hiei and Yusuke scrambled over to the bed, Yusuke closed the window and crawled in bed after Hiei. The bed was large enough for both of them, easy. He reached over and turned off the bedside table light and rolled over so he was facing Hiei.
“Are you okay?” Yusuke asked in a whisper. Hiei rolled over so he faced his best friend.
“Yeah, he just got angry again,” Hiei said back in a whisper.
“You know you can stay here whenever you want to,” Yusuke said, “My mom never comes in my room unless I'm in trouble or to check on me when I'm grounded.”
“Thanks Yusuke,” Hiei said. Both boys smiled at each other for a few minutes and then Hiei snickered quietly.
”Hey Yusuke, seen Keiko lately?” he asked. Yusuke pushed his friend playfully.
“Dude! Shut up!” he whispered. The rest of the night was spent joking and laughing with each other in hushed tones until the early hours of morning when they fell asleep. When Yusuke's mother called in to wake him up, Hiei was already gone.
By the time he ran through that memory Yusuke was smiling and stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around his waist. That whole night he and Hiei had been up talking about school and girls and how horrible parents were. It was really incredible how much fun he'd had that first night. On his birthday, Hiei snuck in earlier than usual and he, Atsuko, and Hiei had all had a little birthday party. The two pretended to get drunk off a sip of wine that Atsuko let them have and Hiei got a pocket knife from Yusuke. He was pretty sure the teen still owned it to this day. It was a great pocket knife, about six inches with a black casing and a dragon on it.
He picked up his clothes as he headed for his room. He quietly peered in at Hiei before walking into the room to get at least a change of pants. Hiei was rolled onto his side with the blankets down near his waist. His arms were wrapped from the middle joint of the finger up to his elbows in a nice, neat way. He quietly padded over to the dresser and pulled open one of the drawers and tugged out a set of boxers and change of jeans before he walked back out of the room. A slight groan came from Hiei as he rolled over so his back was to Yusuke. Yusuke froze, expecting to Hiei to wake up with something to say, but when the boy didn't say anything he walked back into the living room and closed the door behind him. He calmly walked back to the bathroom and changed into the clean set of boxers and the dark blue jeans.
He yawned and stretched out his muscles as he walked into the kitchen to find something to eat. Kuwabara should be there within the hour and he had nothing to do until Hiei woke up, so he called to order a pizza that should arrive about the time Kuwabara would then walked back into the living room. He sat on the couch and turned on the T.V while he waited.
