Chapter 5: Deception

Lord Koenma sat behind his desk about to dig into his lunch when the doors to his office flew open, three figures staring at him. He had know they would be paying him a visit soon but by no means did he think it would be this soon. He could only hope they didn't know to much, maybe that way he could get out of this meeting without them finding something that could be devistating to the three worlds. Some things from the past were better off staying as such. In the past.

"Yusuke I'm surprised to see you. Have you found anything yet"?

"We need to know about someone named Zero."

"I'm sorry but I have no idea what you're talking about".

Yusuke's temper flared. "I find that hard to believe. Why are you sending us on some wild goose chase? THERE'S NO TELLING WHAT KIND OF DANGER YUKINA COULD BE IN AND YOU'RE SITTING UP HERE STUFFING YOUR FACE".

"There is no need to shout. I know perfectly well we need to find her but I don't know anything about this Zero. Just where did you hear that name anyway"?

Kurama stepped infront of Yusuke in an atempt to keep a screaming match from staring. "Hiei found a wolf demon in the Makai. He said if we wanted to find Yukina we would have to find Zero first. So if there is anything you could tell us then please do".

Koenma felt a sudden pain settle behind his eyes as he looked at the detectives. He tried to push down the lump that was forming in his throat knowing this was the worst possible outcome. He wasn't prepared to tell them what he knew now, it would be never if he could help it. This sort of information could be dangerous in anyone's hands and he wasn't going to be held responsible for that. Yukina's sittuation was tragic but what was the fate of one soul compaired to all of those that could be lost?

It was times like these that made him really hate his job.

"I understand your frustration but I can't help you".

"Hn, how convenient for you".

"Hiei everyone wants to find your sister as much as you do but I can't give you information I do not have".

"Whatever. You're of no use to me. I'm leaving".

The infant ruler slumped back in his chair. He knew this was putting everyone on edge but it couldn't be helped. They would just have to find another way to get to her, where ever she was.

"Look pacifier breath after all the times I had to break dates with Keiko to go on your stupid missions the least you could do is give us a break. FOR GOD'S SAKE SOME BASTARDS KIDNAPPED HIEI'S SISTER AND WE NEED YOUR HELP".

"Again with the shouting Yusuke. You're giving me a headache".

"That's not all I'm going to give you in a few minutes".

The redhead placed his hand on his friends shoulder trying to calm him down. When he was finally satisfied the boy wouldn't attack he spoke. Yusuke, being the hotheaded teen that he is, tuned the rest of the conversation out. Glancing over to a large stack of files he noticed a folder with the words classified in bold red letters and the name Kegasu in the lower left hand corner. Making his way over to the stack he couldn't take his eyes off the name. It wasn't until Kenma summoned Botan did he pull out of his daze. Without a second thought he grabbed file and stuffed it in his jacket.

"Botan please open a portal to the human world. I need some time to go over these reports and with any luck we'll be able to save Yukina".

"Yes sir".

As the last of them exited through the portal Koenma let out a breath he hadn't even realized he was holding. Everything was falling apart right before his eyes and there wasn't even anything he could do about it. He had to make sure his father didn't get wind of this or else he would be screwed. All he could do was go over the report from Kegasu, but first there was the matter of his now cold meal.

- Tokyo airport -

A young woman stepped of the plane into a sea of people sore and exhausted. It wasn't her first time to Japan but it didn't make the trip from New York any shorter. With all of the layovers and delays she was beginning to wounder if she would ever make it.

Making her was past a group business men she picked up the pay phone, quickly dialing a number. It only took a few seconds before there was a voice on the other end. "Hello". She didn't respond. "I see you're talkitive as ever. I take it your flight was ok". The was a hint of laughter in the man's voice.

"Blow me Dante. How long til it gets here"?

"Straight to the point as always. I'm not sure but it should be there by the end of the week. You know you should have just left the damn sword behind. It's not like your going to need it. Hell I've seen you take out a Soul Eater with your bare hand. That in itself is quite impressive Fayth".

"I have to go. As much as I so enjoy your enlightening conversations the trail is getting cold as we speak".

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know. Things to slay and vampire ass to kick. It's always the same thing with you. Hell at least you're consistant".

Fayth mentally sighed trying to remember why she still kept him around. "Whatever". There was a short pause. "And by the way I don't think I need to remind you not to use that name when you get here. There's no telling what trouble it could cause".

"Sure thing boss. Any other demans while I'm on the line"?

"Dante... You know what never mind". Fayth slamed the reciver back down, nearly ripping the phone off the wall in the prosess, ignoring the looks people were giving her.

- Genkai's temple -

As they stepped out of the portal Kurama looked skyward, a million thoughts running through his mind. Judging by the angle of the sun it was already early noon. It had been a few days and they were back where they started in the beginning. Every clue they managed to find only would end up being another dead end. At this rate he was woundering if they would be able to get to Yukina before anything happened to her, time was one thing that wasn't on their side.

"Well, Botan said, I'm sorry about earlier. I'll try to talk to Koenma and see if there's anything I can do, but I can't promise you anything. I just don't see why he would hold back information".

"Oh of course he's always so straight forward about everything", Yusuke retorted.

"Come on don't be that way. You know he wouldn't leave Yukina's life in dager".

Kurama looked skeptcally at the blue haired girl. "I know he's conserned but you have to admit there's something not right about this".

She glanced down at a suddenly intresting pebble near her foot. "I know what you mean but what can we do? If he's not talking when it's something this important then... Look I have to go but I promise I'll contact you as soon as I find out anything".

Yusuke stood there smirking as she left. Turning to Kurama he said "Good she's finally gone. Now we can get down to business".

"What on earth are you talking about"?

"This". He quickly pulled the file he had been hiding under his jacket, a devilish grin on his face. "I noticed it on the stack of papers in Koenma's office so I decided to borrow it for a while. He'll never even know it's missing".

"You shouldn't have done that".

"I know but he wasn't going to tell us anything so I figured hell I'm a spirit detective so I'm just doing my job".

"By stealing Koenma's personal files"?

"Sorta. I happened to notice the name at the bottom and remembered binky breath saying something about it before Botan came rushing in Tuesday".

"I see".

"Oh come on like you wouldn't have done the same thing in my place".

"No you're probably right".

"Of course I am. Now let's see what's in this thing".

He removed the papers, a frown plastered on his face. "What is this shit? It looks like a bunch of garbage. What the hell is hemo... uh somthing or other"?

"Let me see it. It looks like someones medical charts. Why would Koenma want these"?

"How the hell should I know. Kinda like why would it be classified"?

"Defenitly a mystery to be sure". Flipping through the pages he notice something that cought his eye. "I think we have something".

"What"?

"After further testing it has been detirmined the subject's violent and agressive nature can not be controled. We are currently taking steps to eliminate possible future threats. Currently we are expirmenting with a form of suspened animation. If everything goes according to plans Zero will be the first to under go the prosess. We will be moving said subject to highly guarded facility in the northern sector to be kept there until a more adequate solution can be found".

"Well I guess I just found Zero. Now comes the hard part".

"The redhead stared at his friend as tough he had grown a second head. "Are you trying to imply this has been easy"?

"Wouldn't dream of it. I was talking about Hiei".

Again he was met with another glare

"I'm guessing you don't know where he ran off to when he left Koenma's office".

Understanding regestired in his eyes. "I see your point. If Hiei dosn't want to be found then this may indeed be quite difficult".
