Disclaimer:
Don't own it or Kouga. He sadly belongs to Rumiko Takahashi.
F.Y.I. for those of you that might not know youko is an uncommon term for a spirit fox. I end up using it later in the chapter and I just wanted everyone to have a better idea of what the hell I'm talking about. Also I wanted to apologize for the spelling mistakes now. It's not a question of if there's mistakes but how many. I've never been any good at spelling and or punctuation.

On a completly diffrent note if your a fan of Devil May Cry there is a fan fiction by the name of Red Nightmares at Midnight that you may want to check out. Even if you're not I think most people would enjoy it. Also the Yu Yu Hakuso Inu-Yasha crossover By Any Other Name is definitely worth a look. But you don't have to take my word for it just look for yourselves.

(The Devil May Cry story by: Sibilant Macabre is on Adultfanfiction.net and the crossover by: Deviation is at Fanfiction.net. I think it can also be found at mediaminer.org but I'm not sure.)

Chapter 6: Retreival

- The Double Helix -

Loud music blared over the speakers as the crowd of people moved to the fast rythem. Everyone was enjoying themselves completely oblivious to anything else around them or more to the point anyone. At the end of the dimmly lit bar a very young looking woman sat alone under a thick cloud of smoke staring at the entrance. It had been nearly four hours and Fayth's nerves were on edge, pulling out her fifth newport she lit it. Char was suppose to be there three and a half hours ago. ^What the fuck is taking that bastard so long?^ She took another large swallow from the glass next to her, grimacing slightly as the warm liquid slid down her throat. ^I swear he has five more minutes before I go hunt his Re-dead ass down and make him regreat trying to screw me over. I'm going to shove that staff of his so far up his ass he'll be spitting out splinters for a month^. Suddenly the doors swung open, a cloaked figure made his way through the crowd.

Fayth's lavender eyes narrowed as he made his approach. ^Well it's about damn time^. "What the hell took you so long?"

"You really should be more patient my dear you see these things take time. You'll be happy to know I've found out something very intresting durring my surch".

"Go fuck yourself roach. I have better things to do with my time then play these games with you". Pausing she took another long drag from her cigerette. "So what do you know?"

"Those things are going to kill you".

"Heh you wish roach. Like your kind could be rid of me that easily".

"Now, now what kind of attitude is that Slayer? Here I thought we had an understanding. You really sould hold your tongue after all we are a part of you too".

"Enough with the shit. Do you have what I want or not because I could always dust your ass. Do I really have to remind you why I was given the nickname Slayer? Lord knows I could use the stress release".

Bright blue eyes stared back at her as he slid a single piece of paper across the counter. Picking it up she studied information for a moment before setting the paper down and taking another drag form her cigerette. "So he's got another little pet project going on I see. When will that prick ever learn? You think he would have figured that out after Los Angelus when he tried to play doctor with me."

"Yes well we both know why".

Fayth simply nodded her head in agreement "Yeah that dipshit Goshin wouldn't be able to wipe his ass if he wasn't given an order to do it first. Of course you already knew I knew that so where's the big suprise. I surely hope you arn't wasting my time with this shit because if you are so help me Char what I'll do to you will make our last encounter look like a picnic".

"It has to do with something or more to the point someone".

Fayth squeezed the glass in her hand, shattering it to peices, looking down as the rest of it's contents spilled to the floor. "Is that bastard here?"

The corners of his mouth curved up in a small smile. As he spoke you could almost hear the laughter in his voice "Sorry to dissapoint you Slayer but you won't find him. Not here at least. It would appear you have some rather intresting people after our friend as we speak. Though they don't have any real clue as to what's going on, but I suppose the same can be said for you".

"What are you playing at roach? I don't have time for these fucking games of yours. What arn't you telling me"?

"Oh nothing much just that these individuals are working for spirit world. Apperently Goshin has really screwed himself this time".

"What the hell could spirit world want with that demon?"

"Hard to say really but I do know they've been asking a lot of intersting qustion about something that should have stayed dead along time ago. Truth is only the elders really have any knowlede of the person that started their surch towards Goshin in the first place".

"And that is?"

"Sorry I can't help you there just that they were trying to find someone called Zero. Not really sure of the significance but I think you'll be intersted to know there been a big uproar in spirit world over it. Now if you'll excuse me the night calls".

Digging into her pocket Fayth placed a twenty on the counter and headed out the door. As she suspected Char was nowhere to be seen. ^It's still early and I can tell this is going to be one hell of a night^. Making her way down the street she felt a strange energy comming from a near by park. Sighing she made her way over to check it out. ^This better be worth my time. I swear with the mood I'm in I could really use a good fight right about now^.

As she entered a flash of black flew through the trees off to her left. Following the movement she realized it was a person. ^Well it wasn't a soul eater so what the hell was that thing^? A moment later she heard voices off in the distance.

"Hey Kurama I think Hiei went this way".

"Yes Yusuke. I'm sure I felt his energy signiture off to the west".

^What the hell. There's something off about these people. I know they're not vampires but they don't feel like demons either. Well at least one of them^. The other person temporarly forgotten she made her way over to the two people. The first thing that stood out was the dark red hair on one of guys, or she asumed it was a guy. Even from this distance it was slightly hard to tell. ^And to think Dante is always ripping on my hair. I can only imagine what he would say now^.

Walking along side the path Yusuke turned and fell over a black object. "Ow damn it. What the hell is that doing in the middle of the park"? Looking down he realized it was a duffel bag. Before he even had time to think about anything else a shadowed figure made its way towards them. "Well it's about damn time I thought... Who the hell are you"? Angry chocolate brown eyes met a cool lavender gaze.

"Nobody really. Just passing through when I heard someone and I thought I'd have a look. So what about you? Not exactly the best place to be taking a nap".

"What? I just fell over this stupid bag. By the way it's not exactly safe for a girl to be out alone in the park at night".

"You know what just because I'm a girl dosn't mean I'm not able to take care of myself. I swear people like you really piss me off. Always going around thinking the entire female population are a bunch of weaklings that need a man to protect them".

Being of the diplomatic sort Kurama tried to smooth things over. When he caught her eye something that clicked in his mind. A flash of a memory perhaps but definitely something important to be sure. Before he could get a hold of it the image was gone. "I'm sorry about the misunderstanding. I'm sure you are capable of taking care of yourself. My friend was only conserned for your safty".

"Feh sure thing red". Staring into his emerald eyes something hit a nereve the wrong way. Almost like there was someting fimilar behind his gaze. Before another thought could enter her mind she desided to take her leave. "Look I've better paces to be right now so if you'll excuse me".

"What exactly did you say your name was"?

"Hm Yusuke was it? Well I didn't". In one quick movement she was gone.

"That was weard. Stupid weard. I couldn't even feel her spirit energy. It was almost like she's a walking corps. Hey Kurama are you even listening to me?... Hello earth to Kurama are you ok"?

"Yes I'm fine. It was nothing".

Yusuke gave him a disbelieving stare but let the issue drop for the moment ^Strange usually it's the girls that are spacing out when Kurama talks not the other way around. Oh well the important thing is to find Hiei^. "Come on lets go before we lose him again".

A sharp wind blew past them sending shivers down their spines. Everything seemed to get darker by the second until they could hardly see two feet in any direction. Litter flew up swirling in a flurry of motion causing the two to shield themselves from the debris. It seemed to intensify by the second when a voice echoed all around them. "You must hurry there's still time. My powers arn't what they use to be and I'm doing my best to keep her safe. I can't promise you anything but when you arrive I'll keep the guards busy for as long as I can".

When the wind finally reached it climax Kurama felt like some one was trying to suck the air out of his lungs. Every intake of breath was harder then the last. "What do you mean you're protecting her? What's wrong with Yukina?" He all but shouted into the void, his voice laced with a hint of fear, but hopeful all their fears were ill founded.

Another strong gust of wind blew through sending them sliding back a few inches. "All you need to know is I'm a friend. Nothing will happen to Yukina as long as I can help it. I've done the best I can to save her mind but to keep it in tact I had to move it out of her body. To reverse what he's done I'm afraid there is nothing I can do from where I am. You'll need to have Fayth for that". Just as suddenly as the tempest began it also ended leaving two rather confused teens. They stood in complete silence for a moment that streched on for eternity not knowing exactly what to make of bizzare turn of events. Inhaling a sharp breath Yusuke finally found his voice. "What do you think she ment we need to have faith. How is that going to help Yukina? I swear this night is getting stupider by the minute".

"No Yusuke I don't think she ment faith. Whe need Fayth".

He narrowed his eyes slightly in annoyance not quite sure what game Kurama was playing at. "Did that chik fry your brain or something. What are you talking about"?

Kurama let out a slight sigh of frustration, fighting the urge to smack him up side the head, he thought for a moment before he gave an answer. "I'm not talking about the faith as in a belief in something. I was refering to Fayth as in someone's name".

A simple inaudible "oh" was all he said for the moment. It wasn't until he really thought about it did the truth of Kurama's words hit him like a punch to the gut. "Hey wait a minute. You arn't thinking what I think you're thinking? That this has to do with that little blue book of yours".

Kurama stopped in his tracks, back facing Yusuke. If he had been turned around the smallest trace of irritation could have been seen on his usually stoic face. "Yes. That is exactally who I was thinking about. I know you... everyone has been conserned but she just may be the key to saving Yukina's life. So I would appreciate it if you would drop the matter entirely". This whole ordeal was finally taking its toll on his mind and he knew better that to snap at Yusuke but something inside couldn't stop. Eventhough it had been a while since the Ankoku Bujutsukai he could feel his inner youko waking up. The incident with the Idunn Box had caused some kind of fracturing of Kurama's soul he couldn't quite explain. It had been disconserting to say the least but now was not the time to dwell on such a matter.

"Hey I'm sorry that didn't come out right. I wasn't trying to get on your case about it but it's kinda funny ya know".

"How so"?

Incresing his pace to catch up he found himself chuckling lightly at the situation. "Its ironic how this turned out. Well you know... You've been saying from the beginning we needed to look for the girl and nobody would listen. Now come to find out you were right all along".

"I guess your right but..." Before he could finish his sentence a loud crash came from behind them, heavy breathing could be heard.

"Hey! Urameshi what the hell do you think your doing? You can't just leave me behind like that". Brushing off bits of dirt, Kuwabara couldn't help feel angry and slightly hurt by the way he was being treated. Sure he wasn't the smartest or even the strongest of the team but he fights just as hard as any of them, maybe even more so. He is always trying to prove that he's just as valuable a team member as the rest of them not some moron along for the ride. Even Botan had made him feel bad a time or two over little mistakes. Maybe it wasn't intentional but it didn't change the fact that evey one of them didn't truly respect his ability to fight. Only Yukina could make the feeling of inadequacy vanish with a simple smile or a kind word. They knew she was his world and not even the fires of hell would stop him from his quest. So why was it that they felt the need to keep him in the dark? Why couldn't they just once trust that the bond he shared with her would bring her safely back to them... back to him?

Placing one hand behind his head looking down suddenly Yusuke was at a loss for words. He hadn't really plained to exclude Kuwabara but after finding their first solid lead everything else just seemed to slip his mind. "Hey come on it's not what you think. We were just looking for Hiei and..."

"That just great my Yukina's life is in danger and you're looking for HIEI. Why didn't you come get me first? I know how thick headed you are Urameshi so I can understand it slipping your mind BUT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU ALL DAY. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED"? Suddenly his voice became so weak even Kurama's sensitive hearing almost missed it. "I know you don't think I'm a really good fighter but maybe you could have at least thought of how I felt". A pang of guilt swept through Kurama's heart as he finally noticed faint traces of unshed tears in their friends eyes. There really was no good reason why they hadn't looked for him yet. If anything his assistance may have sped up the surch. The hopeful feeling from this mornings good news was quickly fading right before his eyes. "You shouldn't think that way and I appologize Kuwabara. We wern't trying to leave you out of this..."

"But you did didn't you. So now what"?

"Well it would seem that Yusuke has found something very intresting in Koenma's personal files".

A flicker of hope shown in his eyes as he looked intensely at the redhead in front of him. Anything that could get his love back was a welcome gift. "Really. Do you know where Yukina is"?

"Yes we do. We're going to get Hiei then you. I know it may have not been the best decision on are part but you are here now and that's what matters".

"Yeah I guess you're right. It's just a good thing I saw that weard black cloud. It might have taken forever". For the first time in days things were looking up for everyone. Kuwabara knew there was nothing that could kill the feeling of hope and happyness that filled his heart. That was until he heard the one person that seemingly always managed to sour most of the plesantness in him. "I see you finally desided to ditch the oaf. To bad he's worse than the makai insects. No matter how many times you seem to get rid of one they alway seem to come back".

Kuwabara's ire seemed to reach a whole new level. All he had to do was be in the same room as Hiei and his anger would flare. It wasn't exacatly as thought he hated the fire demon... no wait of course he hated him but in a strange way he also respected the Jaganshi. It wasn't something he would ever admit to out loud but the feeling was still there. "Why don't just shut the hell up Hiei before I have to go over there and kick your ass".

Hiei held back a smirk knowing full well exactly what buttons to push to throw him over the edge, and push them he did. It was one of the few mildly entertaining things in the pathetic world and he took every shot he could get. The only thing that could lighten his mood any more was training or pointing out the fox's little flaws, but now wasn't the time for idle threats from the over grown ape. There was still the very important matter of getting his sister and making whatever bastard that thought they would get away with this pay with the spilling of their blood.
'Where is it fox'?

'In the northern sector. We were going to head that way as soon as everyone was together'.

==========================================

- The Makai -

The demon ran across the wooded expanse easily keeping a sharp eye on his prey, stopping instantly when it looked in his direction. The soft rythmic sound of a low heartbeat thudded in his ears in a steady pounding as he watched. He inhailed a fimilar sent as he lowered himself down even further. Claws flex slightly as dangerously sharp nails imbeded themselves into the bark below. Prepairing for the attack he launched himself forward. Surprise regestering on his face as the girl truned toward him, a smirk spred widely across her lips, a single hand raised to him. Faster than lightning he dodged to the left barly missing the flash of light that flew past his head. A solid object connected with his chest, a quick wave of pain to flow freely through out his body, sending a sharp exhale of breath. Half a moment later he was sent reeling backwards. A loud audible thud sounded as his back met forcfully with the ground.

The wolf demon snorted in discust at his own unpreparedness. Eyeing the figure a sudden burst of laughter roared though the forest. "You know I don't think I'll ever figure out how you do that. Even with all of the centuries I've been alive nobody's ever been able to deflect my attacks as expertly as you do... Well Sesshoumaru being the execption of course".

"Of course".

"So what brings you here? Nothing's wrong is there Fayth"?

Fayth brow narrowed slightly as she thought of a way to answer his questions. "I'm not really sure Kouga. It could be nothing but then again... Lets just say Char can be a rather valuable sorce of information but he'll try to talk you in circles if he can. So what do you know about the spirit detectives? It would seem, from what that roach said, Spirit world is going crazy over something they found out".

"Actually I happened to have met one of them resently. Short fellow all in black pretty quick and not half bad with a sword to boot. He was looking for some lost koorime. I told him he wasn't going to get any were until he found Zero first. Then I hightailed it out of there before he could ask any more questions".

"What getting rusty in your old age"?

"Hey I resent that remark".

"Yeah sure whatever. So who is Zero anyhow"?

"Weeelll..." Kouga lazily streched his limbs in the attempt to rid himself of the sudden kinks due to the recent jolt of his spine. Expertly popping his neck with a slight movement he felt a bit of tension lift out of stressed tendons and muscles. "The truth is I don't really know much about it myself. Fact is some came to me talking about the girl and her friends. He said when one of them shows up to tell them to find Zero, who ever that is. I also remember him saying something funny... What was that word he used again?...... Oh I remember now. It was chikyuu-jin". Fayth just gave him a disbelieving glare. "Are you sure. It could have been something else right"?

Kouga leaned his head back in contemplation briefly, eyes shut tight. "Yeah, he finally said, I'm sure chikyuu-jin was exactly what he said. Why is that so strange"?

"Because it basically translates to earthling. Why would anyone say chikyuu-jin when most people just say ningen or human. Odd definitely odd".

"Yeah well he didn't exactly he stick around for tea so what was I suppose to do. It's not like I really cared at the time anyway"

"I guess so. I think I may have met two of the detectives tonight. I saw some redhead that I think the guy named Yusuke called Kurama. Yusuke looked like a punk but the other one had some seriously strong youki surrounding him. It was strange because it also felt human at the same time".

"An avatar".

"That's what I was thinking. There was a buzz a while back about a fox avatar. Use to be some master thief by the name of Youko Kurama. I would asume they are one and the same".

"Makes sense. I remember hearing about it. They were saying he was in the last tournament. So what of it. Why so intersted in this particular demon".

"Who said I was? They were looking for someone... Hiei. Yeah that was it. Safe to say it was probably the same guy you had a run in with. If it's the flash of black I saw in the trees then I understand why you left so fast when you met. At first I thought it was a Soul Eater but he also had a strong demonic energy. The strange thing about him was the fact it felt kind of devided like two opposing forces were fighting inside of his body. There was another energy mixed in with his, something artifical on his forehead. A jagan eye perhaps".

"I felt it too and I think you're right". Leaning back aginst the tree he placed his hands behind his head staring skyward. The clouds drifted lazily by making Kouga yawn lightly as the last of his discomfort eased of of his body. The world around him started to fade into darkness as the first feeling of sleep crept into his mind. Eveything else seemed to be forgotten until his mind finally registered the of extra weight on his chest. Cracking his eyes open sapphire orbs met violet ones in an expression of surprise. "Comfortable are we"?

"Hm. Yes very much so".

Kouga simply chuckled as he wraped an arm around her. "Aren't you worried about your reputation as the slayer? What would people say if they saw the being most feared by the three races of vampires sleeping like a baby in the arms of a demon"? Fayth didn't even open her eyes to respond. "Well I don't have to worry about that now do I. There isn't anything around here fast enough to get away from me. Even if for some reason you suddenly feel the need to spill your guts to Ginta or Hikkaku just remember I'm perfectly capible of spilling your guts too... Not that I'm suggesting you would do something as stupid as that".

"Wouldn't dream of it Fay".

"Good. If you don't mind I could really use the rest. I've been going non stop since I can't even remember".

"Just rest. I'm not going anywhere".

Well this chapter was definitely a royal pain in the ass to say the least. Oh well.

Don't forget to review.
