Part One: The Last Two Fights of the Tournament That…Weren’t.

For ten minutes, Kuwabara just stands there and looks at Ani. The smaller demon could have taken this opportunity to kill him but he was curious as to how his nemesis would react to seeing him this way. Finally, he sighs. “Kuwabara, would you please stop staring at me so that we can get this fight underway?” he demands.

“You’re a cat-demon,” the carrot-top remarks for lack of anything else wanting to come out.

“Yes, yes I am. Now that you’ve figured that out all on your own, could we get going? I don’t want to stand here all day because you are staring at me.”

“Why are you a cat-demon?”

“I don’t know. When I discover the reason, I will be more than glad to tell you.”

“Are you two going to fight or hold a conversation?” someone from the crowd yells. Ani winces at the loudness of the tone and covers his ears.

“Don’t yell,” he grits out, “my ears are sensitive.”

That gets the crowd going and soon Ani is curled up on the arena whimpering as noise assails him and trying to block it with his hands is useless. In the background he hears Juri counting but doesn’t move. He just wants it to be over so that his ears stop ringing. It hurt like hell and Juri’s magnified voice wasn’t helping anything. ‘Let it be over soon, let it be over soon,’ he thinks almost desperately. Finally he hears, “And the winner of the only fight that hasn’t included fighting, Kuwabara!” He still doesn’t uncurl from where he is. He is only aware of anything when he’s picked up. He looks up at Kuwabara.

“Let’s get you out of hearing range,” the carrot-top murmurs. Ani doesn’t answer as he’s trying not to whimper at the sounds of the crowd booing loudly. Kuwabara brings him to the hallway outside the arena. “It’s quiet here; you can uncover your ears.”

“My brother is going to kill me,” Ani mumbles gingerly rubbing his ringing ears.

“Well, I can hardly blame you, the crowd was rather large and you aren’t used to hearing so well,” Kuwabara remarks. Ani scowls at him suddenly really embarrassed. That had to be the most pathetic defeat he’d ever suffered at Kuwabara’s hands. “Hey, I didn’t do anything to you, so don’t take it out on me.”

“I can’t believe it. I lost a damn match because I couldn’t stand the noise of the crowd. That is absolutely pathetic,” he grumbles to himself.

“You could have attacked me while I was staring at you, you know,” Kuwabara points out. The smaller demon looks at him before turning and stalking off feeling even more pissed off. As he passes the doorway to the arena he hears Yusuke yelling. He has to get closer to correctly make out what he says but he hears him through the thick door.

“Where is that bastard? Is he too afraid to face me?”

‘He’s not even going to go out that? That cheap low-life!’ he thinks angrily. He moves to the doorway where he had been when Juri had asked for him just on the opposite side of the arena. ‘Oto, where are you?’ he calls.

‘I’m not fighting him.’

‘Oh and you made ME fight Kuwabara?’

‘You didn’t fight him.’

‘No, I couldn’t because the damn audience was being too fucking loud!’

‘Well, then see, you didn’t fight him but you did have a chance.’

‘Shut the hell up and don’t you dare bring that part up again! I’ve already heard it from Kuwabara, I DON’T need to hear it from you!’

‘Why didn’t you go after him while he was staring at you?’

‘I don’t know.’

‘You have to know why you did it.’

‘I don’t know.’

‘Yes, you do.’

‘No, I don’t.’

‘Yes, you do.’

‘No, I don’t!”

‘Yes, you do!”

‘Alright, alright, I was curious okay? I wanted to see how he would react. How was I supposed to know that he would just stand there staring at me?’

‘After the first five minutes it’s pretty obvious. You should have gone after him!’

‘Oh, shut up! You’re not even going to make an appearance to fight Yusuke!’

‘Do you think I want to see him react to ME? I am damn cat-demon!’

‘Well, obviously mom and dad failed to mention something to us.’

‘Really, what was your first clue?’

‘It might have been waking up and finding that I had pointed, furry ears which, might I add, pick up wonderfully the sounds of booing audiences.’

‘Yes, well, unlike you I am not travelsized for your convience now am I?’

‘No, you most definitely are not. I still think you should face him. He’s calling you too afraid to fight.’

‘Oh that pretentious little bastard! I will kill him!’

Ani smirks knowing he’s got his brother to come and reveal himself. He waits and sees that Juri is about to say something. “If you don’t put that damn microphone down I will shove it down your throat,” Oto snarls storming out.

“Well, it’s about damn time you got he…oh dear,” Juri says seeing the ears and tail, “You two seem to be having the same sort of issues.”

“Wow, really, you noticed? That might be because we are BROTHERS!” he yells at her. She opens her mouth but suddenly and hysterical laughter catches her and Oto’s attention. They turn to see Yusuke kneeling clutching his sides, shaking with the force of his laughter. Oto’s eyes narrow from behind his glasses and he stalks towards the child. ‘Oops, I think he’s dead,’ Ani thinks seeing this.

Yusuke only stops when he sees Oto’s large shadow over him. He looks up at him. “Are you done?” he asks. Yusuke looks at his waist.

“Your tail is fluffed out,” he remarks. Oto looks down at it and the moment he does, Yusuke reaches up and starts petting him. ‘Oh, no,’ Ani thinks, ‘That CAN’T be good.’ He watches as his brother starts purring and arching into his touch. ‘Nope, definitely not good. If he lies down it’s defintely going to be the most humiliating defeat he’s ever suffered.’ Ani, however, makes no move to help him. he watches as Oto does just that and Yusuke pets him until the ten count is over and smirks smugly at him. The crowd does NOT seem amused at this. And Oto…well, he takes off out of the arena bright red and looking exceedingly embarrassed. Ani, knowing where he’s headed, meets him there.

“That was…interesting,” he says. Oto just pulls the pillow over his head and lies down on the bed. “Oh, don’t be like this, brother. I am sure they’ll forget about it in a few years.”

“That’s not the point,” Oto moans, “he PETTED me and I LET him!”

“Well, that was kind of funny.” He sees his brother glaring at him, “Okay, in a completely cruel and unneeded sort of way. He shouldn’t have done that but he won the damn tournament so he should go home.”

“He won the Dark Tournament because the final two matches didn’t consist of anyone fighting. You curled up covering your ears and I…I….oh we are NOT talking about what I did!”

Ani sighs. “You’re not acting like you normally would, brother.”

“Well, I haven’t ever looked in the mirror and suddenly realized that I had cat ears and a tail, either.”

Ani climbs up on the bed next to him. “Well, at least it’s over with. Everyone will go home and we can get on with our lives. Nothing else will go wrong,” he says.

At that moment, the door opens. Turning he stares at Karasu and Bui who are both staring at them. ‘I spoke too soon,’ he thinks waiting for their reactions.
