Hiei glanced over at Kurama hesitantly. "There's...something I have to tell you."

Kurama smirked. "About the lust spell that Mukuro put on you?"

Hiei's eyes opened wide. "How did you know?"

"It's her power signature...and you know as well as I do that lust spells are an easily identifiable and very unique branch of magic. That's why you came to me, isn't it?"

Hiei blushed, ashamed. "I...yes...." Kurama lay where he was, not at all surprised. Something about the pillow he was leaning on was very fascinating.

No. He isn't like us, not in any way,at all...We're probably the only people he's ever slept with. He's ashamed of the stupid lust spell...he wanted to come back and start over....

Maybe he doesn't want us.

He does, of course he does. Why else would he have come to us with his problem?

"Koorime mate for life," Hiei murmured. It was almost as if he had been listening to Kurama think - which he might have been.

"Tell me Hiei," Kurama began, sitting up and slipping an arm around Hiei's waist from behind, "exactly how does the `mate for life' thing work. I'm curious."

Hiei shifted uncomfortably. "Well, it's hard to explain but...no one else attracts you at all. I guess no one else could really satisfy you, but I wouldn't know. Also...if you loved that person in the beginning, then you always love them. I - I'm just speaking form experience...I don't really know."

"Did you love me? Did you, Hiei?" Kurama could hear his voice breaking, but he didn't care anymore. He didn't even care if Hiei saw him crying. He just wanted to hear those three magic words, the ones he'd wanted to hear from the fire demon for as long as he could remember. "Do you care about me at all, itoshi?"

With that, he buried his head in Hiei's shoulder, sobbing softly. It didn't matter at all anymore. Nothing mattered. Just as long as Hiei stayed.

"Kurama, I -"

"You can't say it, can you? You can't lie to me. You can't say it...because it isn't true."

Kurama glared at Hiei with those beautiful green eyes shining from the tears. He had just wanted Hiei to pretend for one moment. Would you really have been satisfied with a lie? I wouldn't be.

Hiei shook his head, trying to clear it. Emotions could be such a weakness. Maybe it would be better if he just watched Kurama from a distance, as he watched and protected his sister, but he couldn't bear to watch Kurama's tears any longer.

Kurama slipped his arms around Hiei's waist, and Hiei tensed. Curling into Hiei, Kurama lifted his face expectantly. If he waited long enough...

Hiei looked at Kurama, his breath coming faster and faster as Kurama's eyes gently fluttered closed. Kurama wanted...oh...Kurama actually wanted Hiei to go through with this. He wanted Hiei to kiss him, and he wanted everything that would follow.

Hiei started in shock as the boy slowly whispered, eyes still closed, "Just pretend."

With a glance at the harvest moon that watched them with a curious eye, Hiei dove in. No matter what the consequences, he would make Kurama happy. He could do what his lover wanted, at least for tonight. For now, nothing else mattered. Nothing else mattered in the least.

Kurama sighed as the soft lips touched his, almost like a dream. Soft spirals to heaven...or to hell, it didn't matter. Just pretend.

I'll keep my candle burning for you...forever....
