Chapter Four: The Decision Part I
"You could start with who the heck you are," Amelia suggested.
"Oh, right my name is Kurama."
"I'm Yusuke Urameshi."
"Kazuma Kuwabara"
"............."
"The shrimp over there is Hiei, he probably thinks he's to cool to tell you his name," Kuwabara said.
"Right, so what do you guys want to tell me and how in the world did you find out about what happened the other day?" Amelia asked.
Before anyone could answer Amelia stopped them. Noticing that all the children had stopped what they were doing and were hiding in various places, trying to hear what the strangers were saying to whom they all considered their older sister.
"You know, maybe we should go up to my room. Follow me."
The boys followed Amelia up the stairs and to her room. Amelia's room was fairly small but all of them fit comfortably. They looked around to see the only decorations were pictures of Amelia and her "family" and friends. Besides that the only furniture was a bed, a small desk, and a mirror.
"I know this must seem very....awkward to you Amelia, but please try to understand this," Kurama explained.
"Okay"
"I'll just cut to the chase. The reason you are able to do such things, to shoot fireballs out of your hands, your being stronger than most others, and possibly a few other things is because you are half fire demon," Kurama said.
Amelia just sat there. Her eyes had glazed over and at first the boys thought that she had not heard what he said. Then, instead of being asked a million questions or freaking out like they expected she actually started laughing.
"You...ha ha...really expect...hahaha...me to believe that!" Amelia said through a fir of giggles.
Amelia calmed down and stopped laughing when she realized that they were serious.
"How could that be true? Demons don't exist. They're just characters in fairy tales....aren't they?" Amelia asked.
"Hn. Not many humans know the truth. Demons do exist and you just happen to be one, well not really since you're only half demon," Hiei explained.
"We came here to bring you to Japan so you can get control of your powers," Yusuke said.
"Japan, but that would mean I'd have to leave home!" Amelia exclaimed.
"You'd get to come back in a couple months. It's not like you could never come back," Kuwabara said.
"No."
"But why?" hey asked.
"I just....can't leave. Please go."
With that they went back down stairs only to see Ms. Robinson there unpacking groceries.
"Well hello there, I didn't know Amelia was having friends over," Ms. Robinson said.
"We were just leaving, sorry to bother you ma'am," Kurama explained.
"What were you five talking about anyway?" she asked.
"We wanted Amelia to participate in....a student exchange program," Kuwabara said quickly.
"Let me guess, she said no," Ms. Robinson guessed.
"How did you know?" Yusuke asked.
"Let me tell you a few things about Amelia. She's been here the longest of any children who have ever lived here. She actually did get adopted a few times, but they brought her back saying she was a freak and could do strange things."
"For years Amelia has watched person after person, friend after friend, leave this place and never return. I can see the sadness she feels in her eyes, even if she thinks I can't. Amelia won't leave because she's afraid that when she comes back everyone she ever cared about will have left or forgotten her."
They're eyes with the exception of Hiei's of course widened in surprise. Amelia's file hadn't said anything about that. None of them could help wondering why Koenma had not said anything about it.
"If you boys need a place to say you're welcome to spend the night here. We have plenty of rooms," she offered.
"That'd be great, thanks!" Yusuke exclaimed.
They were each shown to their rooms and had quickly fallen asleep, all with the exception of Hiei. He was more curious about Amelia's past than he would have liked to admit.
Amelia was in her room trying to fall asleep. No matter what she did she just couldn't sleep. So instead she got out an old box of photos hidden under her bed.
I wish I could just make it all go away. This should be such an easy choice for me. I could never leave the kids here, but what if I did something like that again. What if it was even worse and I hurt one of themorone of myfriends. WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAVE TO HAPPEN TO ME! WHY CAN'T I JUST BE NORMALLIKE EVERYONE ELSE!?! She thought.
Hiei was sitting on the window sill right outside Amelia's room. He had heard all of her thoughts using his Jagan. He could see all the pain Amelia had felt through the years in her memories.
Amelia finally put the box down and went to bed. Hiei then opened the window and stepped inside. He looked at the photos and found that each was a group picture of all the kids in the orphanage. One for every year she had lived their. In each photo more and more of the original children Amelia had started with were missing only to be replaced with new children until the originals were gone altogether.
Amelia groaned and turned over in her sleep. A look of pain crossed her face.
Must be a nightmare, Hiei thought.
Curious Hiei used his Jagan again to see what was upsetting her. What he found cleared all doubts from his mind, if any, that Amelia was just a simple half demon.
