Chapter Nine: Training

Everything was going fairly well on the plane. Amelia had managed to keep her anger at Hiei under control so far, but it was pretty hard considering he was constantly staring at her.

<Stop staring,> she thought.

<Make me,> Hiei taunted.

By now Amelia had learned that she could talk to Hiei telepathically. Of course the only good thing about this was that yelling at Hiei mentally kept her from trying to kill him. Using this to her advantage, Amelia was doing her best to get on Hiei's nerves as much as he was getting on her nerves.

<If you're going to stare at least tell me why you're staring,> Amelia demanded.

<…………>

Truth be told Hiei didn't know why he couldn't stop staring at her. He had tried to stop but there were just too many questions buzzing around in his head, begging to be answered, that he wanted to ask her. No matter how many times he looked away his eyes kept wandering back.

<Oh forget it. You stubborn idiot,> she yelled telepathically.

They stopped "talking" to each other for the rest of the flight. In fact they stopped talking to anyone altogether.

The plane landed and everyone found their luggage.

"So I assume
I'm staying in a hotel."

"Yup, w
e already got a room for you. We'll drop you're stuff off there and then it's off to Genkai's temple for training," Yusuke answered.

"You guys are at least going to stay to make sure Hiei doesn't kill me aren't you?"

"I told you already, Hiei will not kill you. He's not allowed to anyway," Kurama told her.

Does he seriously believe that? Amelia thought.

Despite Amelia's.....shall we say utter disdain of Hiei
? They continued on their way to the hotel. They finally got to the right floor after Kuwabara insisted on pushing all the buttons on the elevator.

"Finally
we get here!"

"You didn't have to hit me so hard you know," Kuwabara told her.

"You deserved it and everybody knows it."

"Oh I almost forgot to tell you. Hiei will be staying with you while you're here," Kurama said.

"What! Why in the world does he have to stay with me?"

"Because I have to make sure nothing happens to you," Hiei answered.

"You mean there are other people besides you that want to kill me?"

"We're just trying to be careful," Yusuke told her.

"Whatever. Can we go now?"

"Yes. Hiei will show you the way to Genkai's temple," Kurama said.

"You guys aren't coming a
t all?"

"Nope. We have to
go check in with Koenma," Kuwabara told her.

"Okay then. Let's go shorty."

"Bring that sword your friends gave you."

"Why?"

"You'll see."

Amelia, reluctantly, did as Hiei said but still tucked one of her knives into her belt. Sword or no sword, Amelia's main weapon
s were knives and that's how she wanted it to stay.

They took the bus most of the way to Genkai's temple. As expected they argued telepathically the entire way. Instead of letting Amelia introduce herself to Genkai, Hiei told her they could make introductions later and headed into the
forest.

"Okay so what's first?
" Amelia asked while pulling out her knife.

"First
is you putting that away. You're using the sword."

"Uh, swords aren't really my thing. I'm used to using k
nives."

"Too bad for you then, t
hose friends of yours gave it to you so you might as well use it."

"But I ha
rdly know anything about swords, except for what I've seen Z and Sky do that's about it."

"I'm supposed to be teaching you and that is what I'm going to do."

Hiei began teaching Amelia how to use a sword. This wasn't exactly easy considering Amelia didn't even know how to hold a sword let alone wield one.

"No you're doing it all wrong. Hold the sword like this."

Amelia tried copying the way Hiei was holding his sword, but it just ended up looking kind of weird.
She partly doing it on purpose to annoy him, but she partly was having trouble learning to use a sword. Amelia was too used to using knives to do it well.

"This is going to take a while huh?" She said with an embarrassed look on her face.

Hiei growled in frustration.

"Hold it like this."

Hiei got behind her and moved Amelia's hand in the correct position. Amelia blushed slightly at this.

Oh come on. Am I actually blushing because of him? There is no way Z was right about him. Absolutely no way, Amelia thought.

"Now that we finally got that down we can actually start training."

"Okay then what am I supposed to do?"

"You stay here, I attack you, you try not to die, and we see how you do."

To hell with what Z said there is no freaking way I could like someone who's trying to kill me,she thought.

Amelia got into the attack position Hiei had taught her and waited. Then Hiei attacked from behind her out of nowhere!

Amelia spun around and block
ed his attack with her sword as best she could. Despite her efforts she still ended up sliding backward about a foot or so.

"Not bad for your first time with a sword."

"Was that an actual compliment?"

"That's as close to one as you're ever going to get."

They continued to train in this way for hours until it was too dark for either to see their hand in front of their face.

"Okay I'll admit it that was really hard," Amelia said while panting.

"Good because it'll be even harder tomorrow."

"Oh joy I can't wait," she said sarcastically.

"Let's just go back to the hotel."

They took the bus back to the hotel and for once Amelia was too tired to argue, even mentally. Once in their room Amelia collapsed on the bed.

"You can still quit if you really want to."

"Shut up. I'm not quitting. Go to bed."

Hiei sat on the window sill instead.

"Or you could do that."

Amelia crawled into bed and
laid there for while trying to get some sleep. She looked over to the window and saw Hiei staring at her again.

"You can't sleep either?"

"I don't need to sleep, at least not right now."

"Whatever."

"Shouldn't you be sleeping? Humans get tired more easily than demons right?"

"Technically I'm only half human remember?"

Hiei could see that she wanted to say something more, but was afraid to say it.

"
Is something else bothering you?" Hiei asked, trying to get her to tell him.

"I...I'm afraid to go to sleep. I keep having these weird nightmares."

"Hn. Nightmares are nothing to be scared of, they're not real."

"You wouldn't be saying that if you were the one having them."

Hiei wasn't really being truthful. He knew the nightmares she was having were something to be afra
id of, especially since he had seen them. But he wasn't about to admit that he had been spying on her.

That was the reason he had asked Kurama to make sure Hiei could stay with her. Hiei knew someone was after Amelia, or rather Amara.

"Whatever. Good night Hiei," Amelia said, turning over to go to sleep.

"Good night Amara,"
Hiei whispered.
