Chapter Eleven: Remembrance
Hiei entered Amara's mind and walked into one of her memories. It seemed relatively happy. A younger Amara like the one he had seen in the dreams was playing with a young human woman.
She had auburn hair that went down to her shoulders and stunning ice blue eyes. Hiei assumed this was Amara's mother; her real mother.
They looked so....happy. Hiei had never seen Amara this happy, even when they were training, which despite all of her complaining Hiei knew that she loved it because she was always grinning.
These people, the younger and older Amara seemed like there was no way they could be the same. The child had some sort of spark inside of her that the Amara Hiei knew had lost.
Soon a man came into the memory. He was not a human though. He was a fire demon, with crimson eyes that matched Amara's exactly. He had short black hair and wore what most humans wore.
To anyone else they would have seemed like a normal human family composed of a mother, father, and loving daughter. And that's exactly what they wanted people to think.
The memory almost fast forwarded in a way. It went to a setting inside their home. Young Amara asleep in her father's lap. The two adults were taking the opportunity to talk amongst themselves.
"We can't just move again and still keep these secrets from her Takami," she said, "Amara's smart. She'll figure it out eventually."
"And if we don't Ryushi will kill us Mai. I know that you wanted as normal a life as possible for us, as did I, but you know that won't happen," Takami replied.
"I can't keep doing this to her. What if he takes her away from us Takami? It would be to get back me for running away. It would be my fault if he made her suffer," Mai said in a choked voice.
"That won't happen. I will never let him harm either of you. I will protect you and Amara for as long as I live," he pledged.
Once again Hiei was thrown into a different memory.
There was blood everywhere. Two bodies lay on the floor. A blood soaked Amara hid in the corner of the room. She was trembling uncontrollably and tears flowed freely from her face.
Ryushi was on the opposite side of the room; laughing maniacally. Laughing at her pain and her sorrow and taking pleasure in it.
All Amara could think of were the words her mother had said to her before she had been killed. She kept replaying them over and over in her head.
Never let him catch you Amara. Never let him take your freedom from you like he did to me. Freedom is the most important thing you will ever have. It is better to die than to have it taken from you. Remember that my daughter. Remember that and I will always be with you, she had told her.
Never let him catch me, she thought as she made a mad dash for the door, running away as fast as she could.
Hiei was once again pulled into a new memory. This must have been past Amara's last dream because she was running with an even more terrified look on her face than before.
Amara was running blindly; not paying attention to where she was going in the least. She just wanted to get away from there. She just wanted to forget, but she knew she could never erase the memory of her parents' bloodstained bodies lying there. The image had been burned into her mind forever.
Amara had been so deep in her thoughts that she hadn't realized that she was running out of ground to run on. There was cliff coming up ahead of her. It wasn't extremely tall, but it would be enough to kill someone if they fell off.
By the time Amara realized it she was too late. Amara ran off the cliff and fell to what most would think was her death. But Amara was no normal person; even at her young age her demon blood kept her from being killed.
She fell and hit the rocks below; hitting her head extremely hard. Amara lay there motionless for what could have been hours, but seemed like years to Hiei. He was actually frightened for Amara's safety, and the fact that he cared about her scared him even more.
Soon Hiei could see a woman coming down the road that had been made along the cliff. Seeing the body on the ground she quickly ran to see who it was. Hiei was surprised to see that it was a younger version of Ms. Robinson. Of course then she was simply known by her first name: Melissa.
"Oh no; you poor girl!" she said while trying to awaken her.
Amara slowly regained consciousness. Her vision was blurry at first, but then she could finally see a face.
"Hey. Little girl are you all right? Can you tell me who you are?"
Amara tried to answer, but she couldn't make her voice work. Just trying to move was to hard for her with how little strength she had. She finally just gave up and passed out again.
The next memory Hiei was pulled into was that of the orphanage. He could see young Amara still unconscious on a couch in the main room. Slowly Amara awoke once again, and almost at the same moment Ms. Robinson came in.
"Hi. How are you feeling?" She asked.
"Okay I guess," Amara replied.
"What's your name?"
Amara's eyes widened in shock as she realized that she couldn't remember who she was. She could remember the names of things, but nothing about who she was or where she had been.
"I.....I can't remember."
"I'm sorry. Maybe I can help. I found you around a cliff a pretty long ways back. I was hiking and there you were on the ground. Ring any bells?"
"No. Nothing."
Amara got up and found a mirror that was hanging on the wall. She looked into it; looked at the face that was staring back at her.
I don't recognize the face, she thought.
Hiei didn't like seeing Amara like this. He moved to put his hand on her shoulder so he could try to comfort her, but his hand passed right through her.
Of course. I was never here at that time so they can't see me and I can't talk to them, Hiei thought.
"You're going to need a name if you can't remember you're real one. You kind of look like an Amelia to me. Does that sound good to you?" Ms. Robinson asked.
She liked the sound of the name. For some reason she thought it sounded like her old one; even if she couldn't remember it.
"Yeah. I like it."
Hiei knew that he'd never find Amara if he just went from memory to memory. He would have to go deeper into her mind. To the very core of it. The part that represented everything that Amara was.
Hiei used his Jagan to go past the memories. Ones that were remembered and ones that had been forgotten. He went past the most recent memories and still didn't find her. Hiei went as far into Amara's mind as he could.
He suddenly found himself in a simple room. It was decorated with pictures of people of Amara cared about. In the center Hiei could see Amara curled up in a ball on the floor. He went over to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. She looked up at him. Her eyes seemed almost hollow in a way. Like she wasn't really there.
"Amara are you alright?" Hiei asked.
"I remember Hiei," she told him, "but now that I do I'm not sure that I want to anymore."
Hiei didn't really know how to comfort her. He had heard that humans feel comforted when they are hugged, so he tried it. Amara seemed to feel better when he did this; even so he still was surprised that he did it in the first place.
"I'm scared Hiei. You must think I'm pretty weak huh?"
"I could never think you're weak. Everything's going to be alright Amara. I won't let him hurt you. I will never let him take you from me, I promise," he whispered into her ear.
Amara smiled at this promise. She was glad because she liked being with him, and she had never felt this way before about anyone. It was.....nice.
Suddenly Hiei was thrown from Amara's mind and back into reality. His eyes shot open after never knowing they had closed. It was like he had been sleeping too.
Amara, he thought.
He looked over at Amara. She was still asleep, but seemed to be waking up. Her eyes opened slowly, painfully, and looked at Hiei. She sat up; grimacing from the stiffness in her body. She turned towards Hiei.
"Welcome back Amara," he said.
"Glad to be back Hiei," she replied.
