Chapter Twelve: Capture
Although it hadn't seemed like that long to Hiei and Amara, about a day and a half had passed while Hiei had been in her mind. The others were extremely anxious to learn of what had happened. Hiei told them a very short summary of what had happened though his story had not been very detailed because Amara didn't want them to know just yet. She wasn't ready to talk about what had happened to her so long ago.
"That's a pretty amazing story Amelia, I mean Amara." Kuwabara commented.
"I guess so," she said, not really paying attention.
"You guess so? You were nearly killed, you didn't even remember up until a day or so ago, and you guess so?" Yusuke asked in disbelief.
"I guess I guess so Yusuke," she said with a smirk.
"You're impossible to get through to you know that?"
"Yup and that makes it so much easier to annoy you."
"We should prepare in case Ryushi comes back for you Amara. You shouldn't leave the hotel without Hiei, just to be safe," Kurama told her.
"I told you before Kurama, I don't need a bodyguard. I'll be fine besides I'm strong enough to kick his butt anytime."
"That didn't stop him from incapacitating you last time," Hiei said under his breath.
"I heard that! I just wasn't ready last time, that's all."
"Regardless we still have to be careful. Ryushi could appear at any moment."
"Whatever you say Hiei," Amara said while leaving to go back to the hotel.
When they got back to the hotel Amara just jumped on her bed and laid there; utterly silent. She could picture the smiling faces of her parents so clearly, but every time she did her mind just went back to the bloody scene where they were killed. Amara put a pillow over her face so Hiei couldn't hear her sobbing so loudly.
Amara hated to cry, especially in front of other people, which is why she didn't do it often, only a few times a year if she could help it. But now she needed to cry. Amara didn't care if Hiei thought any less of her.
Hiei was worried. Amara had hardly spoken to anyone since what had happened. What was she thinking now? Amara looked so sad, she was crying too. Hiei had never seen her cry, except for when she had been crying from pain, but that was different. Amara was crying because of emotional pain, and that's not exactly something Hiei knew how to help with well.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine Hiei, just a little overwhelmed."
"Everything's going to be fine. You don't have to worry."
"It's not that...it's remembering all that happened to me at one time. Remembering my name, my family, how my life was....taken from me in a way. I just need some time to sort it all out, you know?"
"I understand."
Hiei didn't want to ask Amara any questions until she felt ready. He wasn't about to push her right now. If he had been through what had happened to her he wouldn't want to be bothered either.
"Hiei?"
"Yeah what is it?"
"Did you see...all of the stuff I forgot?"
That's right I never did tell her where in her mind I had been before I found her, Hiei thought.
"I.....yes I saw it."
"Oh. Do you think that makes me weak? How I ran away I mean."
Hiei wasn't sure how to answer that. He definitely didn't want to upset Amara any further. In his opinion running away from a battle was a sign that said you were weak. But in Amara's case there was no way she could have won and she was just trying to do what her mother had said in the first place.
"No. You did what you thought you had to do. You did what your mother wanted. That in itself is a victory."
Amara smiled. It made her feel better to know that Hiei didn't think that she was some weakling.
"Thanks Hiei."
"For what?"
Hiei didn't get an answer for Amara had already fallen asleep. He smiled very slightly at this. It had been a very trying ordeal for the both of them. Hiei closed his eyes and soon fell asleep.
A few hours later Amara awoke. For a moment she thought that she was back in her room at the orphanage. But then she looked around and saw Hiei sitting on the window sill and realized where she was. She sighed. Amara had to admit, she missed America, but it made her feel safer to have Hiei in the room.
Amara crept out of bed and left the hotel. Having Hiei around was nice, but she was also used to being alone a lot. Plus with Hiei asleep she could explore her new surroundings without interruption. Amara was pleased to find that there was a park nearby.
Amara walked through it until she found a nice tall tree to sit in. She climbed up and sat there for a while, trying not to think at all for once and just to sit and appreciate the silence.
Out alone is she? This is almost too easy, Ryushi thought.
Ryushi suddenly appeared below where Amara was sitting.
"Hello Amara. Having fun in your little tree?" He taunted.
Amara quickly jumped down from her hiding place and drew her sword. True she hadn't liked listening to the boys tell her to be careful all the time, but that didn't mean she had been dumb enough not to be armed at all times.
"You stay away from me Ryushi," she said with venom dripping from her voice.
"That hurts little Amara. And after all we've been through."
"I'm not so little anymore and I won't run away this time."
"Indeed you won't."
In a flash Ryushi was behind her. He hit her hard on the back of the head, knocking her out.
<Hiei,> she thought on the verge of unconsciousness, <help.>
Hiei shot up. He looked around to see that Amara was no longer in her bed.
Damn, he thought, I told her not to leave without me.
Hiei immediately contacted the other detectives and raced to find the place where he thought Amara's cry for help came from. He ended up in a park close by next to one of the trees. Kurama was the first to meet him.
"I'm here Hiei. What's happened?" He asked.
"I'm not sure yet. Amara left the hotel during the night, I heard her cry for help, and here I am."
"Hey we're here!" Yusuke yelled as he and Kuwabara ran towards them.
"Have you contacted Koenma yet?" Hiei asked.
"No. Better do it now," Yusuke told him.
He pulled out his communicator and Koenma appeared on the screen. Hiei reluctantly told him what he knew, which wasn't all that much since Hiei had been asleep when Amara left.
"My guess is she left to be alone and Ryushi captured her," Hiei guessed.
"How could you let this happen Hiei?!?! You were supposed to be protecting Amara not letting her get kidnapped!" Koenma yelled.
"Quiet toddler. Just tell us where we can find them."
"That's just it. Nobody has ever been able to find him. He's a notorious criminal. I've sent some of my best detectives after him and they never came back!"
"Koenma do you think it might be possible to try tracking Amara's energy instead of Ryushi's? That might make it easier to fine them," Kurama asked.
"I can try, but it might take a while to find her. Meantime you should do all you can find her from where you are."
"How the heck are we supposed to find her? It was Hiei's job to watch her and now even he doesn't know where she is!" Kuwabara asked.
Hiei put his sword against Kuwabara's throat. He had made a very big mistake by saying that. He had figured Amara would have been smart and stayed with him, but he could see why she had desired to be alone. After all most of the time he hated being with other people so why would she act any different?
"Do not blame me for this fool. She left and got herself into trouble. I assumed she could take care of herself if that happened."
"Alright, alright, no one is blaming you Hiei. We just need to calm down and think rationally," Yusuke said.
"Right. Ryushi is a demon so he probably has a fortress of some kind in demon world. Maybe he's there," Kurama said, thinking out loud.
Hiei wasn't really listening all he could do was think of how stupid he had been for letting himself think they were safe.
How could I have been so foolish? Of course Amara would leave she hates listening to what others tell her to do about as much as I do, Hiei thought.
"Hey shrimp are you coming or what? We're going to go wait at Genkai's until Koenma tells us something," Kuwabara asked.
"Hn."
<Stay strong Amara,> he thought, hoping his message might reach her, <I'm coming.>
