It was the perfect plan, really it was. Two of the best thieves in the three worlds (and one other lesser thief) stealing the artifacts from the stupid Oni guarding Enma's vault was a wonderful idea. With all three artifacts, they could rule both the Makai and the Ningenkai. It -was- the perfect plan, strong emphasis on was. That stupid fox had to go and screw things up with his stupid ningen feelings.

Since when did kitsunes care for anyone but themselves, especially when that kitsune was the infamous Kurama, the Don Juan of the Makai? Hiei scowled at that thought. He supposed that a demon spirit being born again as a human made them victim of human emotions. Saving that ningen woman was a waste of a perfectly good wish. Not to mention that careless fox got himself caught. Hiei snorted when he thought about his own defeat at the hands of Koenma's rookie "spirit detective." A deep growl rumbled in the fire demon's throat as he realized his new position as part of Urameshi's team. He had no choice, if he wanted to save his soul from an eternity of imprisonment.

Why couldn't Kurama have stuck to the plan? Then he and Hiei would not have to help that stupid ningen stop crimes that they were guilty of committing themselves. Hiei hated to feel like a hypocrite. There was only one positive point to this situation, and that was that he now had a better chance of finding his sister. Hiei sighed as he looked down from his place on the rooftop.

He watched the ningens walk along the streets, rushing to get wherever they might be going. So many dark heads rushing around, trying to beat the rain that was certain to spring forth from the ominous clouds above. Yes, it seemed as if all them were in a hurry…all except one. A fiery, bright red head strolled slowly along the streets. Hiei tilted his head to the side as he studied Kurama. Surely, the redhead sensed his you-ki. If he did, he chose not to acknowledge it. Hiei watched as the youko faded into the crowd. As soon as he lost sight of Kurama, the clouds opened and let down a torrent of rain. Hiei rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"You are going to get sick standing out in the cold rain," a soft voice came from behind and startled Hiei. The small demon whirled around to meet the mischievous green eyes of Kurama.

"You know damned well that a little rain isn't going to make me sick." Hiei says in his usual emotionless voice. "You, on the other hand, may run into a slight problem." Kurama smiled warmly as he slightly chuckled. The smooth, honeyed sound touched Hiei's ears and caused the smaller demon to shiver. To Hiei it was like the sound of nails down a chalkboard.

"See, you are cold, you're shivering. Come on." Kurama states before starting down the fire escape.

"Where are we going?" Hiei's uncertain voice stops Kurama in his tracks. Kurama looked at Hiei to see the apprehension in the fire demon's ruby eyes.

"Don't you trust me?" Kurama said in a perfect tone of innocence. Hiei crossed his arms and stared pointedly at the disguised fox.

"I trust no one Kurama, especially kitsunes. They are too sneaky." Hiei had a sarcastic look on his face, and Kurama just sighed and shook his head. Poor Hiei, it was rather sad that he had never had anyone in his life that he could trust. Hell, he didn't have anyone period.

"We are going to my house…you know, to get out of the rain. Hurry, I'm getting cold." Kurama continued his trail down the fire escape and Hiei just jumped from place to place until his feet touched the ground at the same time as Kurama. They walked slowly in silence until they arrived at the front door of the house.

"I'll come through the window. I have no desire to socialize with any ningens and explain my existence to them. Hurry up." Hiei jumped up in the tree beside Kurama's window, not really sure how he knew it was Kurama's window. A few moments later, the window opened and Kurama stuck his head out.

"Hurry up and…get in here?" Kurama blinked as he looked at that tree. He could have sworn that Hiei was there a moment ago. The sound of a throat being cleared caused Kurama turn so quickly that he almost lost his balance.

"You might want to shut that…your room is getting wet." Hiei stated in a dry tone. Kurama blinked a couple of times before he obeyed the fire demon and closed the window. The kitsune turned back to his guest and just looked at him. He had no idea what to say or do. He never spent any time with Hiei outside of a 'business' setting. He really hadn't expected Hiei to take him up on his offer, to tell the truth.

The two demons just stood there, dripping, in silence. Hiei became very uncomfortable with Kurama's staring and began alternating his weight from one foot to the other. That fox was acting rather strange today. Hiei chanced a curious glance at his companion and found that he was still looking at him.

"Well are we just going to stand here and drip?" Hiei's annoyed voice breaks the silence in the room. Kurama's face turns red in embarrassment.

"Gomen, Hiei. I'll just go get us some towels." Kurama rushes out of the room, causing Hiei to arch an eyebrow in amusement. The small demon pulled off his boots and his scarf. He was unbuttoning his cloak as Kurama re-entered the room. He handed Hiei a towel and went over to his dresser.

"I think I may have something that will fit you without it falling off. You can go into the bathroom and change. Just leave your clothes and I'll dry them." Kurama handed Hiei a small pile of clothes.

"Hn," was the reply that Kurama received as Hiei marched to the bathroom with clothes and towel in hand. Kurama chuckled as Hiei practically slammed the door. He towel-dried his long red locks before he stripped of his own wet clothes and changed into a pair of green flannel pajamas. The rain had caused a chill that went straight to the bone. He was putting on some socks when Hiei emerged from the bathroom.

He tried not to laugh, really he did, but he couldn't help himself. It was just too funny. Kurama had given Hiei a pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt…both too big. Hiei was practically swimming in those clothes. The gray pants had a string that was tied very tightly, which still didn't help them from sliding low on the hips, and the legs were rolled up quite a bit, but still only Hiei's little toes peeked out. The blue shirt hung to his knees and the sleeves were almost down to his wrists. The finishing touch to the outfit was Hiei's annoyed scowl. He looked so much like a child in trouble. Kurama could only think of one word to describe Hiei at this moment and that was adorable.

Kurama's eyes widened. Adorable? Hiei? Maybe he caught a cold or something. Hiei was everything but adorable. He was a temperamental little shit that carried around a badass attitude that he could most definitely back up. He was extremely vertically challenged, never smiled, red eyes, and never wore anything but black. All things considered, Hiei could hardly be considered adorable. Yet, Kurama felt that he was.

"Are you quite finished?" Hiei asked gruffly. "If you're not, I can change that." Kurama instantly cut off his laughter, but the amused smile stayed. He knew Hiei really didn't like being laughed at.

"Are you hungry? We can go downstairs and get something to eat and I'll throw your clothes in the dryer." Kurama starts to go downstairs.

"What about your mother?" Hiei says nervously. Kurama could have sworn he heard an undertone of sadness in that question. It was so easy to forget that mothers could abandon their children like Hiei was abandoned. Shiori was a wonderful mother, very attentive. Shuuichi was a very lucky teenager to have a mother whose world centered around him.

"She's at work. You don't have to worry about running into her today." Kurama grabbed Hiei's clothes and exited the room, and Hiei shrugged his shoulders and followed him downstairs.

Hiei entered the bright, warm kitchen and felt a stab of jealousy. Kurama's Shuuichi form was well cared for. Pictures of the red-haired human littered the surface of the refrigerator. Hiei walked over and looked at the pictures. They showed various times in Kurama's human life. What would his life have been like if his mother had kept him? Would he feel the warm feeling that he feels between Kurama and Shiori? Probably not. No one loved him. He was dreaming if he thought anyone ever would.

A bright streak of lightening lit the sky outside and was followed by a loud crack of thunder that caused Kurama to jump. Hiei chuckled at that. Kurama sat some onion soup and sandwiches on the table and looked up when he heard Hiei's chuckle.

"Scared, fox?" Hiei said with a smirk. About that time the sound of the front door opening caught their attention. Hiei turned to leave, but Kurama pushed hard on his shoulders, forcing him to sit in chair at the table.

"Shuuichi? Are you home?" Shiori's voice sounds from the living room.

"In the kitchen mother." Kurama calls back to his mother. If looks could kill, Kurama would be dead from the glare he received from Hiei.

"Hey there baby." Shiori walks over and kisses Kurama on the cheek. "Mmm. Something smells good. Did you make soup?" Kurama just nods. Shiori walks over and pours herself a bowl and turns toward the table, noticing Hiei for the first time. "Shuuichi, you didn't tell me we had company. Are you babysitting?"

Hiei looked at Kurama with an insulted look and Kurama chuckled. Poor Hiei. He always had issues with his height, but he was young yet. He still had a chance to grow yet, though it was highly unlikely…pun unintended.

"How are you young man? Aren't you just adorable." Shiori bends down to Hiei's level and coos in a voice meant for a child.

"I've been better, but all things considered, I'm fine." Shiori's eyes widen when she hears the deep timbre of Hiei's voice. So he was a little older than she thought…a lot older, Shuuichi's age probably.

"That's Hiei mom. He's a friend from school. He walked home with me so we could work on a project. Unfortunately we got caught in the rain and he had to borrow some of my clothes until his dry." Kurama sits beside Hiei and Shiori blushes.

"I am so sorry young man, I really had no idea. It doesn't' look like the weather is going to get any better. You are more than welcome to stay the night. That is if it is okay with you parents." Shiori says in her motherly tone.

"I don't have parents. They're dead." Hiei mutters unemotionally. A look of compassion crosses Shiori's face.

"Well who are you staying with dear?" Hiei looks at Kurama with a panicked look.

"He's staying with his cousin, who is never home." Kurama says calmly. Hiei just stared at him in shock. Kurama was quick on his feet that was for sure.

"How sad. Well, you can stay with me and Shuuichi anytime you want." Shiori pulls him into a big hug. The look of panic and annoyance in Hiei's eyes caused Kurama to stifle a laugh.

"Come on Hiei, we'll eat while we work on our project." Kurama grabs a tray and puts their food on it and then grabs Hiei by the collar and drags him out of his mother's embrace and the room.

"It's about time Shuuichi started making friends." Shiori smiles to herself and starts eating her soup.

"You can quit scowling now. You're safe from the big bad hug." Kurama teased Hiei who just glared at him over his bowl of soup. "You have to admit, it wasn't all bad."

"I have to admit nothing." Was all that was said and Kurama shook his head. Hiei was so difficult. Not that it was actually his fault. Hell, this was the longest conversation they have had since they robbed Enma's vault. Hiei was still a little sore about that. Well, Kurama had lied to him, even though it was for a good cause. Kurama looked up as Hiei stood.

"What are you doing?," Kurama says with amusement.

"Looking for my clothes, so I can leave." Hiei grabs his sword and continues searching around the room for his clothes.

"You're not going back out in that are you?" Kurama really didn't see the point of drying Hiei's clothes if he was just going to go back out in the rain.

"What else would you suggest, Kurama?" Hiei's red eyes narrowed at the redhead.

"Why don't you just stay here?" Kurama turned and looked out the window at the storm outside. "It is better than the alternative." Hiei followed Kurama's gaze to the storm. He snorted, crossed his arms, and sat lotus style on the floor. Kurama knew that was Hiei's way of accepting his invitation. Instead of saying anything and letting Hiei keep his pride, Kurama went to his closet and got some blankets and pillows and prepared a bed on the floor.

"You can have the bed and I'll sleep here in the floor." Kurama illustrates his point by sitting in the make-shift bed.

"That is unnecessary. I'm used to sleeping on the ground. It's your bed." Hiei walks over to Kurama and lightly kicks him in the side. "Go on, get out of my bed. If I find one red hair, you're gonna get it." Kurama smiles and gets out of the floor. Hiei was actually being playful…it was odd. Kurama picks Hiei up and throws him on the bed.

"You are going to sleep in the bed because you don't get to very often. If I have to, I will tie you down. Stay boy." Kurama lays back down in the floor.

"Hn," comes from the figure on the bed as Hiei pulls the covers over him. It was looking like a long night. Kurama just hoped that Hiei wouldn't try to escape in the middle of the night. Kurama opens his mouth to start a conversation, when a big bolt of lightening lights the sky. The lights in the house flicker a few times before going off completely, leaving the room dark.

"Well I guess cards is out of the question." Kurama chuckles and Hiei just snorts.

"Maybe someone is trying to tell you to shut the hell up and get some sleep. Stupid fox." Hiei turns his back to Kurama and Kurama sighs. So typical of Hiei. He lays down and soon finds the land of nod.

That's it for this chapter. I know it is boring, but bear with me. I just have one question to ask: Would you guys like a H/K romance or H/OC romance? My story line allows either one. Just let me know.
