Chapter 4: An Old Friend

Disclaimer: You think I own it…that's funny.

Warning: Nothing out of the ordinary for now.

"Hello Hiei. It has been a while," the flowing melodic voice filled the room. It wasn't the sort of voice that you hear everyday. This voice was made for seduction and it was aimed at Hiei.

The jaws of Reikai Tantei dropped to the floor. Kurama felt the urge to growl, but uncertain as to why. Yusuke just grinned like an idiot, whispering 'way to go man.' Kuwabara sputtered a few times and began to feel light headed; Hiei just shouldn't be on this good of terms with a creature that beautiful.

"I have my reasons." Hiei replies, causing Keket to grin.

"Same chipper Hiei I see. Some things never change I suppose." Hiei snorts but avoids her eyes. "You do realize you can stand now, don't you?" Hiei and the rest of the court stand.

"Your highness, sorry for trespassing, but we really needed to speak with you." Kurama says, finally finding his voice.

"Trespassing? And just who said that you were trespassing?" Keket says with a grin.

"Um, you--r hi-gh-ness, you-you see I…thought, but I didn't realize…" Everyone looks at the once before confident Dante, now stuttering and stammering. Keket looks down for a moment trying to keep from giggling. "I'm very sorry princess, I am a fool."

"Hn." Hiei just rolls his eyes. Yusuke really gave a hard attempt not to laugh at the poor guy. Kurama felt sorry for him, knowing why he was acting the way he was.

"Dante, calm down. I was joking. Come, we will show our guests to their rooms, they must be tired." All six of them leave the room, Dante taking up the rear as Hiei walks beside Keket. Dante scowls at the two.

"Jealous are we?" Kurama chuckles. Dante just looks at the redhead, his blue eyes widen in shock.

"But how…that is to say…" Dante scratches his head.

"It's very obvious, but you need not worry about the humans…they're pretty thick headed." Kurama watched as Keket leaned over and whispered something to Hiei and heard Dante growl.

"Please don't tell her. I am not of her class. It would be insulting her if she found out." Dante just kept scowling at the little fire demon, especially when her musical laugh reached his ears. "I wish I could make her laugh." Dante spouts almost wistfully.

"I think you sell yourself short, my friend. I would be more worried about your competition." Kurama says bitterly.

"It sounds almost as if you are jealous as well, human." Kurama looked almost insulted, and not because he was referred to as a human. To think that he might like Hiei…in that way…it was preposterous. Same sex relationships were not taboo in the Makai…hell he had been known to have quite a few male partners. But Hiei? Kitsunes were known for their fascination for the aesthetically pleasing. Could Hiei really fit into that category? Sure Hiei probably would be considered handsome…in a rugged badass motherfucker kind of way, but Kurama was never attracted to that type before. Why should he be now? Dante was just imagining things…he had no idea what type Kurama was attracted to…either male or female.

"No, not jealous, just aware that you may have to work a little harder than what you have been in order to get her to notice you. By the way, I'm not a human…completely anyway. I'm really a kitsune. Ever heard of Youko Kurama?" Kurama chuckles as the Fey's eyes widen.

"You are the silver kitsune? I've heard many demons say that they would no longer be the same after having been your lover. Quite a reputation you have." Kurama blushes at that comment and they continue going down the hall, explaining how he came to be in a human's body.

"Where have you hidden yourself as of late, Hiei?" Keket says as she looks back at Hiei's companions.

"Right now I'm working for Koenma in the Ningenkai." Hiei growls.

"I would never have thought that Koenma would be so desperate as to ask you for help. I've seen better attitudes on rocks." Keket ruffles his hair as he scowls.

"I've heard you've been well." Hiei murmurs.

"I suppose. You would have seen it for yourself if you had come back as you promised." Keket says sadly.

"I'm here now. Promise kept." Hiei glances at her downcast face.

"For how long though? I'm not gullible enough to think that you plan on staying." Keket looks at him with a sad little grin. "Well, we're here." She leads the group into the first room. "If you want to share rooms that can be arranged, but if you want four separate rooms that can be managed as well."

She turns back to see her words had fallen on deaf ears. The group was looking around the room in awe. The room was huge and decorated in deep shades of crimson and gold. The room looked like flames consumed it. Two large beds rested on each side of the room and they looked very comfortable.

"Wow." Kuwabara says in amazement.

"You know Kuwabara, you have a knack for understating the obvious." Yusuke mutters.

"Is it to your liking?" Keket asks.

"Hell yeah…I mean, yes your highness." Yusuke says in response.

"Please call me Keket. Have you decided whether you want individual rooms or to share?"

"We'll share…these rooms are too big for just one of us." Yusuke says with a grin while looking at Kurama who was totally confused by that look.

"Very well then, I'll take you to the other room. Follow me." They quit the red and gold room and go to the room across the hall. This one was just as large as the last, but decorated in shades of deep blue and silver.

"It looks like the sky at night." Kurama whispers.

"Okay, I'll let you boys decide where you will room and let you get some rest. I will send someone for you for dinner and we can discuss whatever is troubling you. Maybe arrange for the palace assistants to bring you some clothing. Rest well my friends." Keket turns and walks off, and Dante waves and jogs to catch up with her.

"Princess, wait up." Keket turns and smiles at him and waits for him to approach. He offers his arm and she takes it as they walk off together. Hiei growls as he watches the two disappear down the hallway. The rest of the group look at him in shock.

"Okay, spill it Hiei." Yusuke says as he is sure that all Feys are out of hearing range.

"Spill what?" Hiei avoids the question and starts walking toward the red and gold room.

"How do you know her? Why didn't you tell us? And why did you growl?" Yusuke throws back, slightly angered by the fact that Hiei had kept such important information from him. Hiei clenches his fists at his side.

"It is none of your business. It was none of your business. And that is some more of your business." Hiei answers before he goes in the room and slams the door.

"I guess Hiei chose what room he wanted." Kurama says, staring at the closed door.

"Well, I ain't staying with him." Kuwabara says while crossing his arms.

"I'm with you. I would rather listen to you snore than worry about whether I will still have my head in the morning. See you at dinner Kurama…we hope." Yusuke chuckles as he walks into the blue and silver room, Kuwabara not far behind. Kurama sighs as he walks into the room he was to share with Hiei.

"Hiei." Kurama gains the fire demon's attention as he walks into the room. Hiei hangs up his cloak and lays his sword on the desk.

"What do you want?" Comes the reply of the half-Koorime.

"Tell me, how do you know her? I never thought you liked anyone, but you seem rather fond of her." Kurama sits down on his bed and waits for Hiei's answer.

"I was working as a mercenary about a hundred years ago, and I decided I wanted out. I no longer wanted to take anyone's orders. Lucky me, I figured out that the only way to get out was death, a very painful one. We were coming through this area for a hit, it was to be my last assignment…permanently. As soon as we entered the forest, they teamed up on me. I had just gotten my Jagan, so I was too weak to fight off all of them. Next thing I remember was waking up and seeing the face of Keket. I was never told the details. All I know is that they were dead. I was only supposed to stay here in order to heal, but ended up staying a little longer than planned." Hiei sits on the bed and takes off his shoes and starts unbuckling his belts.

"What made you stay?" Kurama gulps, not really wanting to know the answer.

"She did." Hiei said softly. "She wanted me to stay with her, for as long as I wanted, but I eventually left." Hiei takes off his shirt and crawls under the covers of the large bed. He turns his back to Kurama, letting him know that the conversation would now be over.

Kurama sighed. He felt lucky to get that much out of Hiei. He never got details, almost glad that he didn't. Yet, it was difficult to commiserate with the little demon if he didn't know exactly what happened to him. What little bit he did know about Hiei's life was enough to give him nightmares at times. Hiei was most certainly a survivor. Kurama tried to think back to his past, just to make sure that he was not one of the many who abused Hiei. He often did that, but he couldn't remember much of anything that had to do with the silver kitsune. If he were to find out that he had done something awful to Hiei at one time, he would never be able to live with himself. Kurama could never remember having a horrible life. Sure, everyone had their troubles, but Kurama's demon past had always been carefree and his human life was pleasant. Hiei seemed to have never been happy. Has anyone ever seen Hiei happy? It was almost as if Hiei thought that he did not deserve to be happy. Kurama finally fell asleep, trying to figure out why fate had their paths to cross.

Hiei was in his only little world of reflection as he laid facing the wall. He thought back to the moment he first saw Keket. He was overwhelmed by the kindness she had offered him. He was surrounded by her warmth and care. She was there through every moment of his recovery, which was a long one. The moment that he came to, he wanted away from all the beauty of this place, only to find that his legs were in such bad condition that walking was not possible, let alone running like hell out of there. Keket showed a patience that Hiei thought was reserved only for the gods, and the fact that it was being reserved for him in his moment of weakness struck the youkai speechless. (Not that he talked that much anyway.)

Keket had made him feel things that he thought he did not have the ability to feel. She treated him as if he was precious and his life had meaning somewhere in the three worlds. How could he not feel something toward her? He never had anyone to care for him in his entire life, and now he had found someone who was foolish enough to care for him. He was…happy…at that time. Maybe too happy? He had not wanted to leave when he did, especially in the way that he did. He was growing too close to her…he felt that he had no choice but to leave. People wanted him dead, he could not hide behind a woman forever. He knew that the longer he stayed, the deeper he would feel, and the more it would hurt when she found something better and new.

So he had left. He slipped out in the dark of the night, trying not to let anyone know he was leaving. Good fortune was not with him for Keket was having trouble sleeping. Maybe she sensed Hiei's restlessness, maybe she knew that permanency was not part of his routine. Whatever it was, she had caught him in the act, so to speak. She just looked at him sadly and nodded her head in understanding. He had promised her then that he would come back to her, a promise he had no intention on keeping. He left, a feeling of emptiness feeling his entire being. He was accepted completely and totally for once in his life. He was not a forbidden child in the Daoine Sidhe. Keket had even planned to teach Hiei the art of summoning, but now it would never happen. He was filled with a great sense of despair for a long time after leaving the kingdom of the Fey. Every thought Hiei had for the longest time centered on the life he had left behind in the Daoine Sidhe. That fact changed the moment he crossed paths with the infamous silver kitsune, Youko Kurama, and it wasn't exactly a change for the better.

That's it for this chapter guys. I know it is short, but I wanted to leave a little cliffhanger. I'm so sorry. Please review.

Kurama: What do you mean it wasn't a change for the better?

siren: Um….I plead the fifth?

Hiei: Hn. What are you planning on doing to me?

siren: Don't worry Hiei-kun, that's for me to know and everyone else to find out.

Kurama: But I don't want to be a bad guy.

Yusuke: Gee, Kurama, no need to whine about it.

Kurama: But…but…

siren: I'm going to resist that pun. Anyway, again, please review. Laters.
