Girl of eternal suffering

Episode 5:
The Blue Flame and A Blue Voice

They were climbing and climbing… They must have hiked up 5 stories before Yugure finally turned from the steps and continued down a long hall. The cries of anguish and the smell of death still reeked within the castle. They wondered constantly what was causing the disturbing occurrences. It was really starting to creep them out.

Yugure's countenance still remained unchanged; She was continuing to ignore the sounds and smells of the place. How could any human stand such conditions? From what they had seen earlier, she had led a hard life, so it didn't seem impossible that she was used to this because of her harsh past. However that still didn't change the fact that she was a murderer. So she slew her own father… why? Why did Koenma fear her so? Was she really that powerful?

The hall eventually ended in a large iron door. Yugure pushed the door open and walked into a pitch-black chamber with no sources of light. Everyone filed in behind her. Immediately the door closed behind them and they heard the amused giggle of a female demon.

“So you defeated Haiyuki? I expected no less from you. But, here, you shall PERISH!” The Voice said filled with a seductive tone of malice and superiority.

“Show yourself if you wish to confront me… and your death.” Yugure said calmly.

“Humph… very well then.”

Immediately the darkness engulfing the room vanished revealing bright lamps on the walls and ceiling. Something had been covering them and whatever it was, was forming a puddle in the middle of the room of what looked like tar. Slowly the black liquid-like substance grew upward, shaping itself into the body of beautiful, yet frighteningly powerful woman, smirking at Yugure. She had long black hair covering her entire body. No clothes. Her only coverage was her extravagantly long hair. “Let the games begin, Yugure, The Destroyer.” The woman smiled a malicious grin. “I shall be the one to lay waste to the Queen of the Dead. I, the shape-shifting demoness, Mitai. You shall suffer until your very last breath, darling.”

Shamira giggled again as Yugure drew her black katana. “You must know nothing about me, Baka, if you believe you have even the smallest hope of defeating me.”

She flew at the woman so fast even Hiei could barely keep up. But Mitai was ready melting, again, into a puddle of darkness. “Knowledge…” she said curiously. Yugure jumped back as the human-like form returned “then perhaps…” She said with a snicker in her words “this form would be more suiting in a fight with you, sweetheart.”

The woman's hair began to wrap around her limbs and her middle, giving her total coverage as the hair faded creating a samurai outfit almost exactly the same, as Yugure's except it was a dark blue. The rest of her hair shortened and spiked upwards also turning a dark blue as her face changed from that of a female to that of a male with blue eyes and a rough looking exterior. “Do you enjoy this form as much as I, Yugure” Even her voice changed, becoming deeper and more masculine. Her new, male exterior smirked in terrible satisfaction.

Yugure gasped, taking a step backward and lowering her blade, staring in horror at Mitai's new form. She clenched her teeth, breathing heavily and glaring apprehensively at the smiling demon. She dropped her sword striding backward several paces. The other demon was getting a kick out her reaction. She was laughing hysterically as Yugure dropped to her knees. Hiei suddenly glimpsed the smallest flicker of emotion behind her eyes. It hadn't been there before so something was up. Who was this man to Yugure? What did it mean?

Mitai, having finished laughing at Yugure, drew a blade that was tied to her waist and rushed at Yugure. Yugure covered herself pathetically with her arms curling up and shivering as Mitai took a swing at her right arm. Her sleeve tore and fell revealing wrappings around her arm. Not just simple combat tape around her wrist and hands, no, they were wards and bandages wrapped around her arm from her fingertips to her shoulder. The wards deflected the damage the blade would have caused. Yugure began shaking as she had in the fight with Haiyuki. And it happened again. The room melted away and images flashed for brief moments before their eyes. The hearts bled with sorrow and…love… The images they beheld consisted of a single person- the man that Mitai had transformed into. Most showing the man smiling kindly at Yugure. But the final image was that of him over Yugure, with his white-hilted sword driven through Yugure, smiling menacingly at her.

They blinked and the room returned, yet again. Yugure shook the memories away and ran at Mitai again. She slashed and cut off his/her arm! ((^_^)) The arm fell and Yugure smirked It was subtle but Hiei caught the glimpse of something falling from her eyes glimmering in the light of the room. Huh?! Was she… crying? But. Why? Yugure slashed at the creature's middle. And a huge cut formed. Mitai screamed, melting again to the ground. The puddle moved quickly to the fallen arm sucking it up and reforming into the man they had seen before, completely unharmed.

“Curse you, and your foul existence.” Yugure said her voice shaking with rage”

Mitai smiled again saying in happiness “It's a bit difficult to defeat me if your katana doesn't even leave a scratch, hmm?” She giggled evilly.

“I'm sorry, darling. Memories of the Blue Flame troubling you?” Mitai drew her sword again, stabbing violently at Yugure's chest. Yugure dodged, stepping to her left, and grabbing Mitai's blade. Mitai pulled the sword away from her grasp, cutting into Yugure's palm. She didn't even wince as she clenched her fist tightly and swung at Mitai's face. The Shape-shifter staggered backward as Yugure she brought her katana up to cut Mitai in half. But once again the shape-shifter shrunk to a puddle and renewed herself, completely unscathed.

The demoness leapt back, eyeing Yugure in frustration. The woman wouldn't have it she chased Mitai and jumped on her/him…it, pinning the shifter to the floor and driving her sword into the creature's heart. She screamed and squirmed under Yugure's weapon. Finally dissolving into her puddle and rising again behind Yugure grabbing her in chokehold.

“Damn you, wretched woman” The creature's male voice said, no longer amused, but desperate and angry. Yugure barely had to exude any energy to throw Mitai off her. She turned around and cut the demoness again. Mitai's body split exactly where Yugure's blade fell and Mitai melted to the ground moving away and reforming near the door opposite to where Yusuke and the others stood.

“Curse you!” Mitai cried taking one final dash at Yugure.

She braced herself smirking and dropping the black hilted katana. As Mitai got closer Yugure stretched her hands outward to connect firmly with the shape-shifter's face. She clenched the male form tightly. It didn't seem as if anything was actually happening; however Mitai began screaming in pain at the top of her lungs. They watched in horror as Mitai's face started turning a dusty black color. She was trying to pull away but found she couldn't even sink to her puddle as her entire body turned to ash. Within a minute she was nothing but a pile of cinders on the ground. Yugure sighed and walked calmly out the other door.

They were about follow her when they heard a loud bubbly voice coming from behind the door crying, “Yusuke!” It came closer and closer until finally the door swung open and Botan flew in on her oar. She jumped down and the oar disappeared. She stood gleaming at Yusuke in a pair of blue jeans a red T-shirt and a blue jacket. “Koenma thought you might need my help!” she said, answering his question before he could ask it.

Yusuke sighed and just kept walking after Yugure. “Hey! I came to help!” Botan said angrily, running after the annoyed spirit detective.

“Wait maybe you can tell us something.” Kurama said turning to Botan “this girl, Yugure. Every time something happens that apparently makes her upset we experience what we believe is her memories. Could you tell us why?”

“Oh that! That's rare and relatively difficult to explain.” Botan said suddenly looking as if she was thinking really hard. “You see, for someone like Yugure who's past is rough (I know because I saw it as well when I was looking for you guys! That energy wave must've stretched about a mile or so before it's power diffused) must have used her powers to suppress her bad memories. But when She was feeling a very powerful negative emotion she must have released it, trying once again to push it from her mind. However the results are… unstable. In her effort to destroy the memories she sends them outwards in a burst of frightening energy, which resulted in us seeing parts of her pasts.”

Yugure was much farther ahead and they had to run to keep up with her. After a while they finally caught up to her and she led them through more corridors and up more flights of stairs. Hiei's thoughts were still racing. About Yugure. He wouldn't spare the woman just because she had few bad memories. He had to avenge Yukina, no matter what!

“Hiei…?” the hi-youkai's ears twitched and he turned in the direction the voice had come from. It wasn't anyone that he had been walking with. It was far off. And gentle, full of sorrow and fear. “Hiei-san…?” The voice called again “It is you isn't it…?” Hiei's eyes snapped open and he raced in the direction from which he had heard the voice, as fast as his legs could carry him. Was it? Could it possibly be…? He thought not daring to hope. Kuwabara gasped racing after Hiei. He'd heard the voice, too. What could it mean?

The others, startled and confused, followed them. Yugure, too. Hiei reached a door and without a moment's thought he swung it open to reveal a brightly lit chamber. And in the middle staggering to her feet, her eyes reflecting suffering unknown to even Hiei, was Yukina…
