Girl of eternal suffering
Episode 7:
Accursed Fiend Homunaku
Hiei turned back to the others as Yugure disappeared out the door Shoyu had been guarding. He sighed and simply stood staring at them, waiting.
“Should we follow her?” Yusuke said pretty much to everyone in the room.
“Yes. We still don't know very much about her.” Kurama said.
“And that's why we came here in the first place.” Yusuke finished, “So we'll go after her then… any objections? Ok!” Yusuke said without waiting for a response.
They each nodded in turn, though Hiei was a bit hesitant. He still bore a grudge toward Yugure. Nevertheless he followed the others as they raced to catch up to her and follow her to the top of what seemed to be an endless stairwell stretching on into the heavens themselves.
The chambers and hallways became colder and darker as they continued and the cries became louder, the smell of death more powerful. The air was slowly becoming increasingly difficult to breathe and it felt as if there was some kind of barrier consisting of nothing but pure evil and darkness they were treading through, that only became more powerful as they neared their destination. This place was beginning to make even Hiei uncomfortable and yet the woman of darkness walked on calmly through this place, this place that was so terribly decorated with the foulness of the wicked and the suffering.
And finally after what seemed like an eternity of walking, before them lay a door that glowed with a certain malevolence that caused a cold wave to rush up and down each of the team's spines in turn. But Yugure did not flinch and pushed the door open to reveal a huge throne room. And encompassing the entire room was a huge bubble-shaped barrier. The only spaces not protected by the shield were the tiny bit of space between the walls the ceiling and the corners of the room. In the center of the room in a huge throne sat a great black demon bearing a huge grin. Yugure walked in calmly, glancing around a bit and then she spotted something. Lying helplessly on the ground were two limp forms, a boy and a girl. The girl was clad from head to toe in a ninja's clothing, except it was white, as was her hair and the boy's outfit was strange, with lots of symbols and chains. It looked to be some sort of Chinese warrior's garb except that it appeared very wild and chaotic. His clothes were silver and his hair was a messy mat of brown. The two looked strangely familiar to the team.
Hiei's eyes widened as he came to a realization, those two were the ones they saw being operated on by the demons, and the girl they had seen being torn away from Yugure in the demoness's memories. He also began to wonder why the other demon had kidnapped Yugure's brother and sister and lured her here with them. Did the demon believe that he could overcome this demon among demons, this beast of darkness? She didn't seem very easily defeated… perhaps this strange demon was planning something. Perhaps he knew of Yugure's weaknesses.
The two forms on the floor stirred and they each lifted their heads from the ground to look up at Yugure. They each wore an expression of confusion. The girl gave a gasp and jumped up. “Onesan!” she cried. “You came!” The boy stood and smiled at Yugure.
“Took ya long enough, sis!” the boy said roughly.
Yugure sighed and nodded, giving a small relieved smile. Then without warning four fiends appeared from behind Yugure's two siblings and seized them, locking their arms behind their backs with low laughs of triumph. They demons flew into the air, one holding each of the two captors the other two standing before the others holding black beads before their own bodies. The demons released the beads and after falling an inch or so the beads erupted, expanding outward to become two smaller replicas of the bubble encompassing the room to cover each of the demons holding Yoake and Churitsu and the captors themselves. Though these shields were smaller, it was easy to tell that they were considerably stronger.
Yugure expression was immediately furious and she walked forward silently, behind her the rest of the team filed inside, Kurama closing the door. The team stopped, observing the shield cautiously, but the dark mistress continued forward, and without hesitation, she stepped calmly through the barrier. It let her through! But the barrier must've had some purpose, right?
“I wonder if we will be permitted to pass as well…” Kurama mumbled suspiciously “Kuwabara! No, don't!” he said frantically as Kuwabaka rushed toward the spirit shield, as if expecting to pass through as easily as Yugure.
“If she can get through, then maybe we can, too” Kuwabara said taking a leap at the spirit shield.
Hiei sighed rolling his eyes and stepping off to his left, as a screaming Kuwabara flew by, crashing painfully into the wall behind. “Baka!” Hiei said irritably “it's obvious the demon only wants Yugure to pass, because she's probably the only one he wanted to have showing up in the first place, moron!”
“Well, you can't expect everyone to be psychic like you all the time and figure everything out immediately” Kuwabara snapped in frustration.
“I figured it out all right…” Yusuke said lamely.
“So what….” Kuwabara then began to mumble angrily “thinks they're smart just cause…” and he trailed away mumbling several curses under his breath as his face turned bright red.
The others each smirked jubilantly.
“Hey! Look!” Kurama said. And everyone turned as the demon sitting at the throne stood up.
“Yes…” he said grinning at Yusuke and the others. His voice was extremely deep and powerful, booming throughout the entire chamber. “As you can see, there will be no passage for the rest of you… you can enjoy the show from there, though, don't worry!” he laughed a huge evil laugh.
Yugure sneered, “You seem confident” she retorted calmly, her face harsh and her expression cold.
“But of course, my lady Shi!” The demon said turning to her to bow, sneering slightly. “I know your weaknesses, and they are easily accessible.” He laughed.
There came a low rumble from Yugure's throat, a subtle growl, but she did not move. She simply stood, glaring at him.
Yugure looked up at her siblings and turned to the larger fiend saying coldly, as if knowing all along “You want the crystal, don't you, Homunaku?”
The demon nodded, a broad smile forming on his lips.
“And I trust you will let them free if I hand it over?” Yugure said calmly
He wanted the crystal? Was it the one Koenma had spoken of? It had to be! But why did Yugure seem to be handing it over without hesitation? Did she fear this creature? Hiei knew the fiend was holding her siblings hostage, however, the demons were so weak, even the baka could deal away with them, quickly and easily. So why did she seem so willing to give up this almighty crystal Koenma claimed her to possess?
“But of course, Yugure!” Homunaku bowed again “You have my word”
Yugure sighed “very well then” She placed her hand on the center of her chest.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING, ONESAN?!!” A cry erupted from the lips of Yugure's sister. She glared furiously from above screaming angrily “YOU KNOW HE'LL ONLY USE THE CRYSTAL TO GET TO US AGAIN!”
“Yoake!” Yugure said threateningly. “Don't…”
“BUT-!”
“Silence!!” Yugure called “I know… but I also know that if I don't, he'll kill you” Yugure's eyes lowered to the floor, filling a bit with sorrow.
“IT DOESN'T MATTER!” Yoake answered “HE COULD USE THAT CRYSTAL TO DESTROY EVERYTHING IN BOTH THE MAKAI AND THE NINGENKAI!”
“Silence her!” Homunaku called to one of the demons that weren't holding the girl, who delivered a crushing blow to the girl's stomach. Yoake gave a short cry before becoming unconscious, and dropping her chin to sit limply against her chest.
Yugure gave another low growl. Her brother simply stared at Yoake in horror, not daring to speak. He knew she was only knocked out, however, something in his eye suggested that pushing the demon's anger would not be the wisest course of action.
Yugure turned back again to the demon. “Well, let's get this over with, shall we?”
“Indeed” Homunaku replied.
Hiei himself was beginning to worry. What would really happen if she handed over the crystal? Everyone would be in grave danger. He was sure of it, however both demons seemed to have their minds made up.
Yugure then put two fingers before her chest, and began to mutter something under her breath. The words were utter nonsense! It didn't sound like any language any of them had ever heard of before. But slowly everyone in the room began to feel the effect of the spells she mumbled. The room was extremely dark as it was, however it seemed to grow ever darker and colder as Yugure continued to speak her low chant. Hiei suddenly felt sick to his stomach, like he had been given two square blows in the middle. He looked at the others. Whatever was happening seemed to be having an effect on them as well. Kuwabara looked like he might throw-up!
Hiei looked back up to find Yugure floating about 5 feet from the ground, in a black haze. And the room began to shake! It seemed an earthquake had hit, as several stones from the floor flew into the air to encircle Yugure. Hundreds of gigantic boulders enshrouded her even further as her black mist thickened, like a shady fog. The fog stretched slowly outwards encompassing the entire room. Hiei could barely make out Yugure, however her saw her do it. She plunged her fist deep inside her chest and with a great cry of agony tore something from inside herself. She held the object before her as a great deal of blood spilled from her torso. It glowed a black eerie shine. The light cut through the haze and Hiei made out a small black gem levitating between her outstretched palms. Yugure gave another short scream before calling to Homunaku, “THIS IS WHAT YOU DESIRE SO TAKE IT!!”
“Very well then!” the demon's eyes glowed with satisfaction. He lifted his hand allowing a small burst of energy to flow to the crystal, the gem's power depleting instantaneously. Yugure gasped as exhaustion took her, and fell to floor in a dreary heap. The stone boulders around her flew towards the outside of the room crashing into the barrier and falling with huge booms cracks and thuds to the ground.
Yoake's eye snapped open and she stared down in horror at Yugure's body “ONESAN!” Yoake and Churitsu called helplessly.
Homunaku walked calmly to seize the jewel from midair and turned to Yugure as if making sure she could still see him. He stepped closer to her motionless form. She was still awake. Homunaku lifted her face so that her eyes stared up at her brother and sister. He looked up at the fiends holding Yoake and Churitsu. “Do it!” He called, trying without success to hide his overwhelming joy.
And with his words a piercing scream erupted from Yoake and a deep cry from Churitsu and Yugure turned just in time to watch their bodies fall to the floor. Lifeless…
Yugure gasped her eyes filling with rage and filling with tears…
