“Are you accusing me of bringing danger to those around me?” Yusuke growled.
“You’re slipping Utada…” Sesshomaru said huskily as he leaned into Yusuke, whose eyes widened slightly.
---------
Kuwabara watched from a distance as Sesshomaru and his associate whispered to each other. He glanced at Kurama and Hiei. Lean down a bit, he whispered. "Do you hear what they are saying?"
"It seems that Utada, is slipping, whatever meaning that has." Kurama replied. Kuwabara nodded and watched as Utada put a hand to his face as if in shock. Sesshomaru stood up straight pulling the man into him and whispering something in his ear. Utada shook his head slowly, before shaking it again as if to assure himself of his answer.
"Something's not right about this...I sense youkai energy boiling." Hiei said.
"Kagome..." Sesshomaru called out.
"Hai?" Kagome asked.
"Escort Utada to his office as to allow him to change to have the rest of the day with his children." He said.
"Alrigh---"
"I don't you need you watching over me." Yusuke growled out. Kuwabara glanced at Kurama who was also shocked by the statement and tone.
"I beg to differ Yu--"
"Enough!" Angel said loudly interrupting them. Jaxxia stood beside her with her arms crossed. "Yoshi, you will listen to him and have Kagome escort you to your office." She glared at Sesshomaru. "And you back off, because we have to talk to these three. Yoshi is a big boy, he can take care of himself."
"If you don't mind, I would like to accompany them." Genkai said.
"Fine..." Utada said before yanking his arm back and turning toward his office. Kagome smiled to Genkai.
"This way..." She replied as she led the old woman after Yusuke.
"Jaxxia, go make sure Bankotsu has his brother." Angel said.
"Aye, Aye mon captain." Jaxxia winked before leaving them. So it was just Angel, Shizuru, Sesshomaru, Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara.
"Now, if you would please come to my office." Angel said leading everyone away.
----
Kagome and Genkai entered Yusuke's office as he pulled up his pants. He was shirtless as he faced the window looking outside.
"Nice to see you alive and well dimwit." Genkai said closing the door as Kagome sat on the couch. Kirara sat on the desk with his shirt in her paws.
"Genkai, so nice to see you still among the old." Yusuke smiled and turned around. He caught Genkai's punch and smiled. "Now, now don't give me a new bruise grandma."
"I assume you two know each other?" Kagome asked.
"She patched me up after the Marutsuma incident." Yusuke said. Genkai nodded and leaned up to push his hair away to see the scar.
"Found a way to conceal it and give a good background. I must applauded your creativity." Genkai said. "How are Susa and Nefertiri?"
"Doing well, they finished their training and are living as normally as one can get with demons in their lives. Kagome over there is their Godmother." Yusuke said as he grabbed his shirt from Kirara.
"Kagome...you're the miko of the Shikon no Tama?" Genkai asked.
Kagome smiled and leaned her head onto her arm. "I must say, you are very well informed. Not many psychics or demons know that now-a-days." Yusuke smiled as he put on his shirt. Kirara jumped onto his head and looked down at Genkai.
"I assume that Kurama and the others do not know?"
"Didn't you hear Genkai? Yusuke Urameshi died of an illness sixteen years ago."
Genkai's eyes widened as she looked from Kagome, who's expression turned grim, to Yusuke. He was smiled in a sad way at her.
So Yusuke Urameshi really was officially dead.
-----
Angel kicked her legs up on her table as she glanced at Sesshomaru before sighing. She put her hands behind her head and closed her eyes.
"Kagome wants you to tell them." Angel said.
"Tell us what exactly?" Kurama asked.
"Well, Kagome is our resident miko as you probably know and I'm a psychic. So we both sensed that shorty and you, Red, are demons." The blonde haired woman replied.
"Well, then what do you want to show us?" Shizuru said.
Sesshomaru stood taller. "I understand her request..." His hair began to bleach out to silver as his eyes melted into his beautiful molten golden color. Kurama and Hiei immediately stood back as they watched the Lord of the West reveal himself. "She wishes that I, Sesshomaru, show that I am a youkai also."
"Sesshomaru-sama," Kurama whispered. Sesshomaru glanced in Kurama's direction before closing his eyes again.
"So, we acknowledge each other as demons and psychics and whatnot." Angel said.
"What of your associate Utada?" Hiei asked.
"He's had dealings with youkai..." Sesshomaru said. "He knows how to take care of himself, as does his children."
"That's not what I meant." Hiei said.
"What he means is that Utada should have died over sixteen years ago, yet he still lives. Why?"
Sesshomaru and Angel looked at each.
----
Genkai put a hand to her forehead. "Yusuke...how did you manage that?"
"I meet a few people on my missions for Koenma. Ones that won't leave me high and dry." Yusuke replied with a cold tone.
"What do you mean?"
Kagome stood up and walked to Yusuke. "He had sent a letter to the prince saying that he needed to leave for personal reasons..." Kagome wrapped her arm around Yusuke's neck and plays with his hair at the back of his neck. "The shrimp sent the Reikai Force thinking Yusuke was pulling away to do demonic things. He fled to the Makai World with the children so they would not get harmed and stayed with friends there. It was there he stayed until he killed Marutsuma."
"Koenma did what..." Genkai stepped back not believing it. Kirara hissed at the name. Genkai looked up at neko. "How did you find such a rare neko-youkai?"
"It was during the first few weeks I got to Makai. The kids were with Genki and I was out training. I was ambushed and left to die. Kirara was passing by and took me back to Kagome's to be healed. She's been with me ever since." Yusuke said with a smile as he leaned back into Kagome's hands. His chest started to rumble as if he was purring.
"Kirara seemed to have an attachment to Yusuke, so I permitted Kirara to stay with him." Kagome said with a smile. "You're purring...."
"Am not!" Yusuke said unable to stop purring as her hands continued.
Kagome smiled as the man in her hands relaxed his muscles. Kirara jumped off Yusuke's head as Kagome walked him backwards toward his chair. Genkai watched as Kirara stayed on the desk as Kagome eased Yusuke into his chair, still massaging his scalp. She raised an eyebrow as Kagome climbed into his lap and leaned down, whispering into his ear.
"Ah Kagome..." Yusuke sighed. He turned his head away, eyes closed. Genkai started to wonder what their relationship was. This girl as well as the kitten seemed to be very close to Yusuke. But what happened that Yusuke would leave the other detectives....
Coughing, Genkai proceeded to ask. "What about your teammates? Do they know of Susa and Nefertiri?"
Kagome smirked and slid off Yusuke and stood behind his chair. Yusuke turned his head and looked at Genkai. He sat up a bit, though still relaxed. "No, they don't know of my children, nor will they find out. I told them as Yoshi Utada that I am dead. It will stay that way am I clear?"
"But Yusuke, they are finding out. They already find it suspicious that Yoshi has little to no spirit energy."
"I've place a barrier around him." Kagome said.
"I also have placed countless spells on myself to hide from them." Yusuke replied. He glanced at the clock on his table and stood up. "Now, if you would excuse me. Kirara and I have to go pick up the children." He turned a gave Kagome a chaste kiss on the lips before heading out.
Kirara quickly followed before the door closed.
"I'm sorry about the scene, but Yusuke tends to be stressed a lot." Kagome replied.
Genkai smiled. "It's quiet alright." She waved her hand slightly. "Kagome...would you mind telling me of yourself?"
Kagome smiled at the elder woman. "Not at all, I mean I had the honor of meeting Genkai-sama. The psychic that trained Yusuke."
----
Sesshomaru moved to the window and looked at the street below. He watched Yusuke walk out of the building heading toward the school. Kurama came to stand by him and looked down at Yusuke also.
"Koenma is on the search the murderer of the Son of Hell." The fox whispered.
"What does that have to do with me?" Sesshomaru asked looking at Kurama. They were a mere few inches apart.
"He will want to search your lands in Makai and have files on all your people." Kurama's eyes stared into Sesshomaru's. Youko's memories flash before his eyes. Those eyes are what attracted him.
"I owe no allegiance to Koenma. He cannot enter my lands without consent, nor will he have any." Sesshomaru replied.
Kurama leaned closer to Sesshomaru. "I don't want to have to fight you to search for this man Sesshomaru."
“I want to see you try to top me kitsune,” Sesshomaru murmured.
Angel raised an eyebrow as she watched from her desk. Kuwabara turned his eyes elsewhere as Hiei just disappeared leaving them to their business. Shizuru had left a while ago stating she had to get to work. She wondered. Putting her fingers to her lips, perhaps she should talk with Kaname about this.
“I don’t need to try, it will happen.”
Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at Kurama. "You still mourn the death of your kitten companion Youko." The taiyoukai nose twitched as he leaned closer to the fox so they were a breath a part. "Don't think I forgot about your plan back in Makai Youko. Trying to play her as well as me. Your desire for beautiful youkai caused you to lose her."
Kurama growled slightly as Sesshomaru stood taller and turned his head down to watch Yusuke walk off in the distance. "She left me, saying she had a duty to fulfill. How was I to know that it would kill her?"
"If that is how you let your mate-to-be get away, then I would hate to think what happen to your other detective friend. The one that was the talk of Makai for a while." Sesshomaru said turning to Kurama once Yusuke was out of view. "The Urameshi boy. Did you let him go off alone to die? Did you let him walk away to his own grave without so much as a glance to his direction to find out if he was still alive and alright?"
Kurama's eyes widened as he stepped back from Sesshomaru. Kuwabara stepped up only to be blocked by Angel's foot. "Let the old pals talk."
"Yusuke left us! He didn't even tell us where he was going!" Kurama said angrily. "How were we to protect him if he didn't want it?"
"After his disappearance did you even search for him?" Sesshomaru listened to the silence as Kurama turned his head away. "Thought not. Some friend you are..."
"Don't..."
"Don't what? Speak the truth? What will you do? Beckon for you mate to come and use his Flame Dragon to incinerate me?" Sesshomaru scoffed. "He won’t get here fast enough.” The inu looked at Kurama condescendingly. “You are as naive as you were back then Youko."
Kurama's fist tightened causing his palms to bleed. He never felt so small before. Is what Sesshomaru saying true? Did he leave them both to die?
"That's enough," Angel said. "I don't need a merging company's CEO to break down because of past events or the sexual tension in here." This caused Kuwabara to gawk at her bluntness. Kurama blushed as Sesshomaru coughed slightly. "We will talk about this later, first is the merger which we agreed to. That is…if you boys play nice. Remember I own some of this company."
“Don’t remind me.” Sesshomaru said.
"Yes...ah...we must be going." Kurama said heading toward the door.
"Wait…" Kuwabara said grabbing Kurama's arm as he passed. He turned to Sesshomaru. "Before we leave I would like to ask what is Hagiri doing here? He used to work with..."
"Sensui, the former spirit detective that tried to open Makai to this realm. Yes, I know." Sesshomaru said.
"What is he doing here?" Kuwabara insisted.
"I found Hagiri on the brink of death. I healed him…befriended him." Angel said with a smile looking down at her ring. Kurama's and Kuwabara's eyes followed.
"You're engaged to him?" Kurama asked softly.
Angel nodded. "Hagiri left for a while, saying he had to help a friend. When he came back, he told me who he helped." She looked up at Kurama and smiled sadly. "He brought me to Yusuke to heal him, but he was beyond my help. Yusuke told me that he hoped that I would take care of Hagiri. I promised him I would, and Hagiri proposed to me. Though with all the things that have been going on, we hadn't had time for the wedding."
"Hagiri is engaged...that was something I'd never thought of." Kuwabara said with a smile. "I hope you two are happy together."
"We are thank you." Angel said smiling.
Kurama stared at Angel's smile. That was a smile that a person would only give if they were talking about someone they deeply love. Thinking back on it...did she ever give him smiles like that? Or did she know it was never meant to be?
----
"Daifu-kun!" Hakuya shouted as she ran across the park. She jumped into Yusuke's arms, who then swung her around.
"Haku-chan! Did you have fun with Susa?" Yusuke asked. Hakuya nodded as she turned to her god-brother.
"Susa-kun played tag with me!" Yusuke laughed and nodded. He turned to Susa and raised an eyebrow.
"Who won?"
"Who do you think?" Susa asked dusting dirt off his shirt. Hakuya giggled and apologized to Susa.
"Alright you two...let's head to the school to find your sister."
"Yea! Ri-chan!" Hakuya squirmed in Yusuke's arms as they began to leave the park to the school not too far away.
"Hey, hey! Be careful, Kirara is on me too!" Yusuke said.
"How do you hide her?" Susa asked as he looked at his dad.
"She does it on her own." Yusuke told his son with a smile. "I think she finds a new hiding spot everyday."
Susa chuckled as he watched Hakuya hands disappear into his dad's long hair. Hakuya squealed and pulled Kirara out in her right hand. The kitten mewed and purred as Hakuya rubbed her nose against Kirara's.
"Aw I love you too Kirara-chan!" She hugged the small neko, who licked her cheek.
"Alright guys, we're here!" Susa said. "Stop with the cuddling and go find Nefertiri."
"Okay!" Yusuke put her down and let her run off with Kirara.
"Go make sure she'll be okay." Yusuke said.
"Gotcha, make sure she doesn't break anything." Susa smiled as Yusuke tried to swipe at him. He ducked and ran off.
Yusuke's expression softened as he watched them disappear into the building. His family... Smiling, Yusuke started to head in after them but stopped. His hand reached up and grabs his chest. His eye widened as he stumbled off to hide himself within the trees surrounding the school. His hand touches the bark of one of the trees before he starts to cough. This coughing fit soon forced him to his knees.
It continues for a few minutes before stopping. Yusuke opened his eye and looked down at the ground and his hand. Blood. Red...a dark red with a bit of black.
"What the..."
Hiei watched from a tree as Yusuke cuts himself off. He stares at the blood and narrows his eyes. 'He should be dead...the black in his blood proves it.' He continued to observe as Yusuke stand and head into the school as though nothing had happened. Hiei suspected that he is going to wash off the blood. 'Does anyone know of his illness?' He thought to himself before leaving.
---
Yusuke washed his hand and dried them off. He headed back outside to wait for his children. Leaning against the wall of the school, he pulled out a cigarette. He pulled out a lighter and snapped it open and lit his cigarette. He took a drag from his cigarette as he put the lighter away. Tilting his head back, Yusuke blew out the smoke and watched the sky.
"You should kick that habit or you'll die." A woman voice said as it grew near. Yusuke turned his head and looked at the woman. Her red eyes stared into his brown ones.
"Kagura...nice of you to take your time to visit me." Yusuke replied. "So out of your way too..."
"What can I say, I felt the presence of a slacker and decided to come scold him." Kagura smiled as she stood in front of Yusuke. "It is nice to see you alive and well Yusuke." The former detective smiled and moved forward giving the wind sorceress a hug. The wind sorceress evaded him and hugged him from behind giving him a small kiss on the cheek.
"How have you been Kagura?" He asked pulling away.
"Fair, I have the dog breathing down my neck about being in line." She waved her hand at that. "But all is well. Kanna wishes you well also..."
"How is she?" Yusuke asked as he put the cigarette in his mouth.
"Better..." Kagura said letting go of him. "She had another dream Yusuke..."
Yusuke took his cigarette from his mouth as he rolled his eyes. "Not again Kagura."
Kagura's eyes narrowed. "Don't doubt her." She stated simply. "Black blood...you were in a puddle of it. You were dying. The King of Hell was standing over your corpse laughing..."
"So? What do you want me to do? Disappear all together?" Yusuke asked coldly.
"I want you to be careful. You know what kind of dangers come by stirring up an old storm." Kagura said. "Please..."
"I will don't worry." Yusuke smiled before he pulled his cigarette up for another drag. "Incoming..." He murmured.
"Auntie Kagura!" Hakuya shouted as she jumped on the demon.
"Hakuya! It's nice to see you how are you?"
"Fine! But I got to tell daifu-kun something." Hakuya smiled and turned to Yusuke. "Nefertiri made the gym so pretty." Yusuke smiled and looked at his two children who were walking toward them.
"Did she now?"
"Yep! Now go say hi!" Hakuya ordered.
Yusuke laughed. "Alright, alright..."
Kagura watched as Yusuke threw down the cigarette and dashed off. She smiled as Hakuya giggled. She went to the cigarette and stepped on it. "Shall I escort you after him?"
Hakuya nodded. "Sometimes, I wish daifu-kun was my real daddy. He's so funny..." She giggled again. Kagura nodded and walked after Yusuke with Hakuya holding her hand.
----
"He was coughing up black blood. I do not understand how he could survive this torment for sixteen years." Hiei said as he explained what he saw to Kuwabara and Kurama.
"Parents often hide their suffering from their children, to keep them safe." Kurama replied. “It is a natural instinct.”
"You think by working with Sesshomaru and Angel, Utada is securing friends and a place for his children if he suddenly drops dead?" Kuwabara asked.
"Could be..." Hiei said. "It would explain why Utada would let his children around the Lord of the West."
"And psychics and what not..." Kurama replied.
Kuwabara thought about a few things. How could a mere human stay alive for so long. "Hey guys, is there like a demonic spell or potion or something to prolong life?" He asked looking at them.
"I haven't heard of one..." Hiei said.
"I have," Kurama said he crossed his arms at his hips. "It is a very ancient spell and would cause the death of the person who it is summoned onto."
"If it kills them, how does it prolong their life?" Kuwabara asked.
"It would allow a demon enter their body, I don't know the internal workings of the spell, but when the demon is separated from the human, the human dies." Kurama shivered slightly. "It is quite different from the merger that Youko and I have."
"Do you know the name of the spell?" Hiei asked.
"Advocatus diaboli mortem," Kurama replied.
"What?" Hiei blinked.
"Death of the Devil's Advocate." Kuwabara stated.
"How do you know that?" Hiei raised an eyebrow.
"School, so basically the human gets extend time as long as he dies in the end."
Kurama nodded. "But it is ancient and has been forbidden."
"How do you know this?" Hiei asked.
Kurama kept silent and turned away from them. "I've got to get home, I have some things to look through." He began to walk away. "I'll see you later."
----
Kurama was walking through the city when he heard laughter. His head turned toward the arcade across the street. His eyes focused on the family that was there.
"Can't beat me, Susa!" Hakuya said as she stepped to the beat of the Dance Dance Revolution Game. Susa was doing fairly well on it. Behind them, Nefertiri and Utada were laughing at him. When Hakuya was victorious over Susa, Utada laughed harder.
"Oh jesus, that was hilarious."
"I want to see you try that old man." Susa glared crossing his arms. Kurama was struck with a sudden deja vu of Yusuke.
"Hell no, I know that the girls can kick my ass in that game." Utada replied to his son. Susa huffed.
"Ri-chan's turn!" Hakuya said with a sway of her hips. "Too bad Aunt Angel isn’t here, she would have been a better challenge."
"I'm sure she would have been, shall we?" Nefertiri asked as she stepped up.
"Yep!" Hakuya giggled and they started. After their turn, in which Hakuya won again, the small family decided for a walk in the park. Nefertiri ran off with Kirara as Hakuya insisted on a game of tag.
Yusuke and Susa stood back watching the girls. Susa glanced at his father. “Did you see him?” He whispered.
“Yea,” Yusuke replied. Of course he had seen Kurama, how could he? After being away for so long, he could pick up the sight of the red haired man anywhere.
“What shall we do?” Susa asked.
“Nothing, we’re taking Haku-chan home after this.” Yusuke said. “Ignore him…he’s not a threat.”
“Daifu-kun, look at the blossoms!" Hakuya called out as she danced under the falling blossoms. Yusuke smiled at Hakuya and looked up at the trees as the blossoms fell.
"Plum blossoms..." Nefertiri said. She watched the white petals fall. "Didn't you use to tell us a story about them dad?"
"Something about snow and a lost person..." Susa said as he remembered.
"I want to hear!" Hakuya said running to Yusuke and grabbing his hand. "Please daifu-kun!"
Yusuke smiled sadly and shook his head. "Sorry, but I don't remember the story."
"Aww...." Hakuya pouted. Yusuke picked Hakuya up and sighed. "Maybe...maybe I can make one up and show it to you one day."
“Maybe, we shall see now won’t we?” Yusuke smiled.
Kurama watched as the small family made their way through the plum blossom grove. He put a hand to the bark of one of the trees and was shocked. The trees were singing. They were singing their happiness. It seemed like it was directed to one of the members of the family.
Normally the plants and botanical creatures don’t sing…ever. When they do it is a rare sound that was pleasant to the ear. Humans can’t hear it; only certain psychics and demons can hear the song of legends. To hear a song of happiness…that was something that just wasn’t…well heard. Most of the time, the song would be about the torture of their brethren and how the humans and demons would knock them down without permission. Songs of sadness and sorrow about how they are dying because of the suffocation they suffer and the hurt they endure.
Kurama stared at the trees. In the branches, he could see little wood nymphs dancing and singing on the branches making the blossoms fall. They were truly happy, what surprised Kurama is what they sang. The song they were singing hasn’t been heard for hundreds of years. His eyes turned to the family again, but he saw the little kitten just staring at him.
Her red eyes seemed familiar, but he couldn’t place them. “Kirara!” Hakuya yelled. “Hurry you Kirara! Or else you'll miss mama teasing daifu-kun!" The kitten turned immediately at the sound of the girl’s voice and ran off toward the shrine in the distance. Kurama frowned. Yes…this family was something of a mystery and he intended to unravel it. The feeling was too weird and familiar not to…
---"Mama! I brought home guests!" Hakuya yelled as she skipped into the house. Kagome smiled as she came out of the kitchen. She walked into the living room and laughed as two people launched themselves at her.
"Daibo-chan!"
"Susa...Nefertiri! It's good to see you too!" She said as she kissed their heads. Looking up she saw Yusuke with Kirara on his shoulder. He grinned at her and shrugged lightly. "So is this a social visit or are you guys staying for dinner?"
"DINNER!" The three kids cheered.
"Is that okay with you Yusuke?" Kagome asked.
"As long as you have room." He replied with a smile. Yes...this was his family. These were the people who'd never leave him. If he disappeared, they would search for him until they found him or died trying. If he died...he smiled sadly as he shook his head to rid the thoughts. That's for another time.
