Hiei' P.O.V.
Hn. I stood on the branch of a tree overlooking the temple and all of the land. I thought to myself of why humans would want to live a place as peaceful and boring as this. I thought of what it would be like to rule the Demon world and all who inhabit it. I would have everything I want. I heard something over in at the temple and saw Kaline brushing her long red hair. She was wearing fitted jeans and a black crochet top. She finished brushing her hair and went over to her desk that had been placed directly in front of the window. Her blue/green eyes looked down at a notebook that she had been writing in for a while now. I knew she would never like me like I do her. She was wanted by so many poor idiotic saps. Even Kurama, one of the smartest guys I know. She had so many to choose from and I knew she would always overlook me. I am an amiko, a worthless fire demon that nobody wants. I hate myself for having these stupid human emotions that get me nowhere. They make me weak. I do have to admit though that I have fallen for her. It does kill me inside to hear her talk about other guys that she likes or that have been hitting on her. I think back to when we all went to the club and she went up to the bar to get a drink and a really ugly ningen grabbed her ass. I was so angry I almost beat the shit out of him. We all went to Koenma's office for another stupid mission but it turns out some guy wants our souls. Not all of ours just mine, Kaline's, Lyrics, and Kurama's. I wasn't afraid when he told us. I know I can fight whoever comes near me. Yusuke got mad and started yelling about how this guy doesn't want his soul. Kaline smacked the him in the back of his neck. I was very happy to see that she wasn't too “fond” of him either. I laughed a little but I would rather it have been Kuwabara. That Baka doesn't know a cat from a dog let alone a demon from a human when he sees one. I looked away not wanting her to see me and to think I was staring at her which no doubt I was. I layed back in the branch and saw Lyric and Kurama talking. I knew what they were talking about. Kurama was talking about Kaline and Lyric was dropping little vague hints about who she liked. Well it was obvious to me that she liked him and it was a no help to me that I could read her mind and find out everything. I love reading people's thoughts without them knowing. It gives me a laugh to see them thinking that they are safe inside their little empty minds only to find out that their every thought is being read and laughed at. The mind that I have not had the guts to invade is that of Kaline's. She would find out and scowl at me for doing it. She reads minds too and I know when she tries to read mine but I block all contact that she could possibly make. I was sitting in the tree when I felt the ground shake.
“What the fuck was that?” I asked myself. I turned and saw a huge red demon with four eyes and a two noses charge out of the woods. He was carrying a club in one hand and a massive rock in the other. “Dammnit” I quickly ran back to others. As I was running I could see Lyric and Kurama trying to ward off that ugly ass beast.
“What's that noise?” Kaline asked me when I stood in her doorway to tell her what was going on.
“There is a huge demon here to fight us.”
“So what do you think of that?” She asked me.
“I think if it's a fight they want it's a fight they'll get.” At that I heard Lyric scream the loudest I had ever heard her.
“Lyric.” Kaline said to herself and pushed me out of the way. We ran downstairs and out the back door. Lyric was on the ground clutching her arm. Kaline ran out and her and Kurama started to kill the demon in unison. At first Kaline threw fire balls at her and Kurama used his rose whip to cut up the demon with no doubt fatal wounds. I stood watching her form among other things. I measured her strength and knew she had potential to be better than she was. They both ended this fight by cutting off his head at the same time.
“Kurama. What the hell happened?” I asked him as we were waiting in the living room for Yusuke to tell us what will happen to Lyric.
“We were sitting there on the porch talking when that massive creature came out of the woods and started a fight. Lyric did not know but his type of blood was like acid to people who are even only part human like her. She did not know so when she cut off his arm it got all over her arm and started to melt her flesh.” He answered me truthfully.
“Hn.”
“Fuck. She better be ok. Somebody tell me what's going on when Yusuke comes out. I'm going to my room.” Kaline said and ran to her room. I wanted to comfort her but probably didn't want me to come to her so I just sat there waiting. About twenty minutes passed and Yusuke came out.
“Will she be alright?” asked Kurama eagerly awaiting his answer.
“Well- wait where is Kaline?” Yusuke asked.
“Hn. She went to her room. Where do think Baka?” I replied.
“Ugh. Well go get her dammnit.”
“Hn. Whatever” I stood up and walked down the hall. I arched my brow. I could hear someone talking to themselves.
“Dammnit. It's all my fault. They'll never forgive me now. They've already hurt Lyric. I can't let them hurt anyone else.”
“Well what are you going to do?” said a voice that I just couldn't place.
“I don't know god just shut the fuck up and let me think.” She answered. I could see her pacing back and forth chewing on her thumbnail.
“Onna.” I called.
“Shit get out get out.” She rushed someone out of her bedroom window.
“Onna?” I questioned.
“Fuck Hurry up.”
I walked in and saw her closing her window.
“Onna what are you doing?” I asked her. She quickly turned her back to the window, keeping her hands on the rim of the sill. She looked at me like she had no idea what I was talking about.
“Nothing Hiei. Just getting myself together.” She answered wiping tears from her eyes. I looked at her knew she was hiding something from me.
“Hn. Whatever Baka. Let's go. Yusuke is waiting for us so he can tell us what's going on with Lyric.” I said, in a quite angry tone. We both rushed out and I left her in the dirt, not waiting for her to catch up to me. We finally got back to the room with everyone else.
“Is she ok Yusuke? Please tell me she's ok.” Kaline pleaded, her face looking like a dog that had been waiting for food for hours.
“Kaline, she is fine but on her arm there appeared a message. It seems that whoever sent this demon to fight knew that he would die.” said Genkai.
“Yeah no shit Sherlock what did the message say?” asked Yusuke.
“If you would stop interrupting me then maybe I could tell but if you keep being such a BRAT then I will never tell you.” She said and smacked him. He rubbed the back of his neck and looked at her like he was about to fight her. Hn. I laughed inside my head at that. Like Yusuke could really defeat Genkai. Hn.
“Hn. So what did this message say?” I asked.
“It said that if you try to get away you will be captured and tortured by him and you will be gutted like a fish. He promises that he will poor the acidy blood all over your bodies and melt your flesh until there is nothing left. He would rather not do that though for he needs your bodies to keep your souls in until he needs them for his plan to rule all three worlds.”
“Well what is his stupid master plan anyway?” asked Yusuke.
“If she knew what it was she would fucking tell you, you idiot.” snapped Kaline. I agreed with her.
“Well is Lyric going to be alright? She is going to be able to defend herself if anything happens?” asked Kurama, a little worried. They were good friends, I don't see how anyone would want friends but they were.
“Yes. She will be out momentarily. We just need to patch her up and everything.”
“Whew. Good.” said Kaline. Everyone went where they wanted to, Kurama to the back deck, Kaline to her room, Yusuke and Kuwabara to the living room. I decided to go outside and lay in a tree. To be alone is what I loved almost as much as…well you know who. I found the perfect branch and got comfortable. I closed my eyes and almost fell asleep when I heard someone in the tree with me.
“Hey Hiei.” I heard her say. I opened one eye and saw Kaline standing on the branch next to me.
“Hn. What do you want Onna?” I asked her being as laid back and uncaring as possible.
“I just wanted to talk.” She answered me.
“Hn. And what do you want to talk about?”
“Oh I dunno.”
“Hn. Well you came up here. I know you must have something to say in that tiny little ningen brain of yours.”
“Hiei, we have gone over this before. I am only part human. Barely even that. I am a fire kitsune. Ok?” She asked me.
“Hn. I will never stop calling you a ningen Onna.” We sat there for a while in silence when I started to think about what she was talking about in her room. Not only what she was talking about but who.
“Hn. Baka, who was that that you were talking to in your room earlier?” Her eyes widened.
`Shit. He was there, he heard everything. I won't let him know. But I like him so much how can I hide this from him?' She thought.
My eyes widened.
`She likes me?' I thought. `No she couldn't. No one wants me. They don't even need me.'
“Onna Who was it you were talking to?” I said with a more stern tone in my voice. She just turned her head to look toward the ground. “Hn. Look from what I heard you know who this guy is that wants to rule the worlds. Now tell me who you were talking to NOW!!!” I persisted.
“OK!!!..........” A silence fell over the woods. “Ok. He-he's my father. The one that wants us is my father. He tried to kill me when I was younger because he said I disgraced the family by being part human. He denied me as his daughter and beat me severely as a child. I left when I was old enough to and I ran here. I faked a story so that I could stay here.” Her eyes filled up with tears. “Hiei, it doesn't matter where we go or what we do to get away. He will get us and he will succeed. That's just how he is. In everything he does he will succeed. Even if it means killing his own daughters.” I looked at her confused. She let out all her emotions right in front of me and I had no way to comfort her. Emotions are not my specialty. Especially when I don't like the sappy love, and crying ones. The weird thing is I didn't think any less of her. I actually thought more of her. She wasn't afraid to show her true self to me and I…well believe it or not….hn. I admired that in her.
“Hn. I am very sorry Onna.” I said truthfully. She was crying still. I thought for a moment. “Wait a minute. You said daughters? Who is the other daughter? I thought you were an only child.”
“Well- um heh Lyric is my half sister. Same father different mothers.” She admitted to me.
“But I thought Lyric said that her father died in a war.”
“Yes her adoptive father. When she was born I made it very clear to her mother and mine that we put her with a different family to keep her safe. I knew he wouldn't kill me just yet especially since I was a little older and could fight but Lyric? She was so young and couldn't defend herself. I made sure that she was ok and that we would see each other again. But stupid me didn't think he would try and get us to become ruler. I didn't think he would even need us for that.” She confessed parts of her past to me. I had no idea.
“Does she know you two are related?” I asked her.
“No. She has no idea. She just thinks we are really good friends, which we are. But it never crossed her mind once that we might actually be related. I don't want her to know either.” She eyed me as if I was going to go tell Lyric the truth right now. I glared at her.
“Onna I'm not going to say anything. Calm down.” It was true I wasn't going to say anything.
“I just hope she's okay and can still fight. No doubt Dad is going to keep sending demons after us every chance he gets.”
“Well I see how all this might come together but you still didn't tell me who you were talking to earlier in your room.”
“Well that was one of my old friends from back home when I used to live with them. Her name's Abby. Yeah I know. I'm not too fond of the name either. But she keeps me posted on what Dad is concocting in the head of his.”
“How would she know?” I asked interested in where this was going.
“Daddy has put together a small army and all who live around him have been forced to join. She was forced and now she helps me.”
“Are you ever going to tell Lyric?”
“No, she cannot know. I don't want her to think her life was a whole lie even though it kind of has been.”
“Hn. I see what you mean.”
“Yeah. I just can't stand him he's a fucking asshole. How could you hate your own flesh and blood enough to kill them?...........You know he killed my mother?” She started to cry again. She jumped to me in a hug. Her arms wrapped around my neck and she laid her head on my shoulder. I didn't know what to do. Hn. So I hugged her back. I pulled my arms around her waist. “Oh Hiei, it's nice talking to you.” My eyes widened. I, for the first time, felt good about what I was doing, until I looked down over the land and saw Kurama standing on the porch looking up at us. The expression on his face was just solemn but I could see he was hurt. I had betrayed my friend and had no idea what to do. He turned around and walked into the temple. I did not know what to do. She pulled away from me.
“Well I guess we should go see Lyric.”
“Hn. I guess.” I replied. We both jump off the branch and used our seed to get the house as fast as possible. When we walked in I saw Lyric sitting at the open breakfast bar talking to Kurama. She had a bandage wrapped around her arm. No doubt they were talking about what Kurama had seen. I wasn't too worried about it. Just because she hugged me didn't mean she liked me in the same way. Kurama saw Kaline running over to her and stopped talking about it. I saw him quickly change the subject.
“Lyric. Are you ok? You had me worried there for while kid.” She rubbed her hand on her head, messing up her hair.
“Yeah Kaline I'm fine. Stop messing up my hair. I just wish it was me that cut off that mother fucker's head. And it itches. GAAAHHHH.” She fixed her short brown hair and started to scratch her burn.
“Lyric I suggest you stop that or it will burn after you scratch it.” said Kurama. She quickly stopped. She always did what Kurama told her to. Well most of the time. She liked him a lot and I knew it was killing her to hear him talk about Kaline in that way.
“Now what do we do? We can't leave or he will burn us to a crisp.” asked Kuwabara stupidly.
“Now we just have to fight off every demon this unknown guy throws at us. Actually we need to know who it is first. Hehe.” Lyric answered. Kaline just looked down, not wanting to reveal what she knew. To my surprise no one noticed.
