Pain, insufferable pain, it seemed to never stop. She made the mistake and she was still paying for it. Kurama hadn't left her since the discovery of her secret life and his so-called broken promise. She made a call from the bathtub on the phone they had given her to tell the barman that she wouldn't be able to return once more. After that, she threw the phone to the ground and smashed it under the pointed heels of one of her shoes; never would they be able to contact her again.

He never let Lisha out of his sights since he found out, she couldn't even leave to see Lindsay and Mark, they had to come to her and while there he would sit in the corner, daring her to say anything negative against him. She forced out the smiles, brushed off the questions about her wearing more clothes each time, claiming to simply be cold.

Now things were about to become horribly, horribly worse. Sitting on the sink was the confirmation to her worst nightmare, the small device showing a positive sign. She picked it up and threw it into the bin that held many more, all with the same results. She slipped down to the floor on her knees, face falling into her hands. Sobs racked her thin frame.

A soft knock sounded on the door. “Lish? Are you ok?” The door creaked open and Azrael stepped inside, closing the door behind her. “Lisha?” she tilted her head slightly and kneeled down next to Lisha. She set her hands on the girl's shoulders. “What's wrong?”

Lisha's body shook from her cries. “P-positive.” She mumbled.

Azrael tilted her head again. “I'm afraid that I don't understand, Lish.” She said softly.

“I-I'm pregnant again.” She cried and buried her face into Azrael's shoulder and started sobbing harder.

Azrael awkwardly patted at Lisha's back. “Why are you so upset about that, Lish? Shouldn't you be happy?” she leaned back and Lisha shook her head furiously. “Why not?”

“I…I don't know….who….” Lisha trailed off and looked to the side at the floor and mumbled, “who the father is.”

Azrael froze for a moment. “Oh, Kami Lisha. Yoko'll kill you if it isn't his.”

“I know.” Lisha sniffled.

“Lisha,” she put her arms around Lisha's shoulders, “I can try and hel-”

“NO! I don't want `Rama to hurt you. It was my choice and I messed up. Promise me you won't get in his way.” Her voice was a bit frantic.

“But I-”

Lisha grabbed the front of Azrael's shirt. “Promise me, Azrael! Please!” desperation rushed into her voice.

Azrael knew that Lisha was being serious, as `Azzie' hadn't been used. “Lis-”

“Please” she begged.

“Ok.” Azrael said, finally relenting. “I promise”

Lisha threw her arms around Azrael's neck and buried her face into her shoulder, crying harder than before. She registered a soft `thank you' from Lisha's lips before she cried herself to sleep on Azrael's shoulder.

“I can't do anything Yame.”

“Dammit Hiei, why!?”

“It's his mate's business, not ours. Why are you so intent on this?”

Azrael leaned back against the tree she was sitting in front of. She hugged her arms around herself and brought her knees closer to her body. Her voice softened with her eyes. “Because….you didn't see her, feel her. The desperation, sadness, fear, lost. It was just so horrible, and she forced me not to get involved with Yoko in anyway. It was so painful Hiei, and I can't do anything directly to help her. She's dead if that baby isn't a kitsune hanyou, Hiei, dead!” she started to shake and buried her face into her knees.

Hiei went down at her side in a second, one arm wrapped around her shoulders and the other around her legs. “I can help there, Yame. I'll use my Jagan to find out the sex and species of the child.”

She looked up. “Could you?” Hiei nodded and flitted off, leaving her at the tree to wait anxiously. Hiei finally returned about an hour later, his expression its normal neutral state. Azrael stood quickly. “Well?” She demanded, hands on his shoulders.

Hiei set one hand over hers and slid it off. “Your friend will live, but if you tell her, that's interfering with Yoko.”

Azrael slid down onto her knees. “Thank Kami…but you can't tell Yoko?” She looked up to him.

“If he asks, then I will, but I doubt that time will come, after so long, he'll be able to tell on his own.” Azrael nodded and fell silent after that. Hiei kneeled down to her, pulling her into his arms in silent comfort, filling her body with warmth it could no longer produce on its own.

She had finally fallen asleep after three weeks of staying awake for fear he would kill her while she slept. Kurama didn't need much sleep because of his demon blood. It was the most peace Lisha had gotten in a long time; there were no nightmares in her mind.

Yoko sat perched on the window sill on the other side of the room from the bed, watching her quietly. He knew of the child, and even though he didn't know if it was his or not, he would not punish her for its conception. Her words had struck him harder than his own rose whip. `It's your fault...You weren't there for me when I needed you!'

“For someone who's mad as hell at their mate, you sure seem to be pretty concerned for her well being.”

He turned his now annoyed stare to the source of the comment: Azrael sitting leaned against the edge of the window opposite him on the sill, a scowl spread across her face. She had her arms crossed, one leg propped up on the sill and the other one laying down outside of the house.

“Of course,” he sneered, “she is my mate even after she had done everything, she's still my mate.”

“I know you can smell it.” Azrael said albeit vaguely.

Yoko knew exactly to what she was referring. “Of course I do.”

Azrael nodded slightly, she had yet to make any form of eye contact since his initial glance to her. “And she's dead if it isn't yours?”

His eyes widened in shock, as if appalled by the very thought. “Of course not. If it's not mine, it is my own fault for not being able to know her heat cycle.”

Azrael's head snapped up and she stared at Yoko with wide eyes. “You mean…you wont' punish her?”

“I've already punished her. It's my duty to see that she survives this child.” He replied nonchalantly. In truth, it was Lisha's accusation of him not being there for her when she needed him constantly ringing in the back of his mind that kept any fury he may have towards her being unfaithful at bay. He knew that it was true, no matter how much he wanted to deny it. Every time he left on the missions, there was a slight look of longing in her eyes. They were hiding something, but he was too blind to see it.

Lisha was silently begging him to skip the mission and stay with her for just a little bit longer and keep her away from the bar for another week or so. But Yoko was oblivious to the pleading within those eyes and left with little more than a peck goodbye. The bed would then remain empty for those weeks that he was gone and she needed a warm body to fill it. Even when her parents were still alive, she was surrounded by stuffed animals to keep herself warm.

“Fool.”

Yoko blinked a couple times and looked back up to Azrael. “Excuse me?”

Azrael's face shifted into a scowl. “You heard me, you're such a fool.”

“Oh?” he raised a brow. “And what makes you think that?”

“You don't realize what you have. Stick that in your rose and whip it.” She gave him one last glare for good measure and ran off into the surrounding forest.

Yoko snorted loudly. “So now I'm a fool, eh?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You shouldn't have done that Yame.”
Azrael huffed and slouched slightly on the branch she was sitting on. “I wasn't interfering; I was simply stating and obvious fact.”
Hiei sighed loudly and shook his head. “Yame…”
“No! He's punished her for whoring herself already, but she doesn't know!”
“You need to stay out of it, Yame. Kitsune's mating styles and punishment are different from that of an ice demon or a fire demon.”
She grumbled a few incoherent words under her breath. “I don't' care…she can't take it all, you know what happens if she takes her own life, you kno-”
Hiei growled lowly. “Yes, I know. The only thing we can do is hope Yoko doesn't push her to that point.”
