Chapter 6
The only things that Yusuke saw as the mummy crouched down into an attack position were the piercing eyes of his attacker. They gleamed like a million multi-colored shards of sapphires all flashing with rage.
"Hey! Maybe we can talk! Heh heh!" Kuwabara screeched. "The time for talk is over! Stand aside Or I shall cut you down as well. I want to see that bastard!" The voice replied pointing a bandaged finger at Hiei who stood there with a look of complete and utter shock. He quickly recovered his angry glare and shouted, "I'll take you on! You bitch! We still have a score to settle!" "With pleasure!" The mummy shouted launching itself forward. Yusuke couldn't watch as Hiei would be incinerated before his eyes. He lifted his hand and shouted, "Spirit gun!"
A huge blue blast fired from his index finger and headed towards the unknown attacker. The mummy looked to the side too late. A direct hit. "Yeah!" Kuwabara said happily as the mummy and the blast hit the stone wall. Hiei could see the mummy struggling with the blast. Even from it's vulnerable attack position it had twisted itself into a decent defense and had caught the blast. The bandages began to tear but the mummy would not give up. There was a sudden purple glow from the mummy's palm and suddenly both glows disappeared. The mummy stepped down from hole where it had been forced into the wall. The entire left sleeve and the stomach part of the bandages had been incinerated as well as a larger tear in the facial portion of the bandages it exposed one of those shimmering eyes that looked calmly and almost proudly down at the detectives before her.
"Listen, you freak! You had better think twice before launching an attack on us!" Yusuke shouted. "Hiei, what new manner of fools have you taken arms up with this time?" The mummy asked not even acknowledging Yusuke's threat. Hiei remained silent.
The mummy seemed irritated by the fire apparition's silence. A strange glow appeared in her hand. "Well, shall I see how much power it takes to kill each one of them, Hiei? You'll be last of course. I'll want to enjoy this." She said admiring the glow of power in her hands. Hiei still remained silent. Kurama was watching every move that the mummy had made. He had nearly figured out what and possibly who it could be. "Yusuke Urameshi is my name and I'm your worst nightmare!" Yusuke said powering up. Kurama grasped his shoulder and said, "Allow me." "But-" Yusuke's protest was cut off by a severe glare given to him by the fox apparition.
Kurama stepped forward, "This is the Spirit Detective. We are part of his team. I am-" "Yoko Kurama. Yes, I have heard of you, fox. One of the most dangerous criminals in the annals of King Yama's most wanted list. A pleasure to be sure. But…a Spirit Detective? What sort of King Yama stooge is this? A new pet?" The mummy sniffed indignantly at Yusuke. "Pet! You little-" Yusuke leapt forward Kurama subdued him again. "Prince Koenma, actually." Kurama replied struggling to keep his hand over Yusuke's mouth.
The mummy almost broke into a laugh, "Are they really that different, Detective Yusuke?" Yusuke broke free, "Nah, they're exactly the same. Though how would you know?" "I've been around the park a couple of times…a great many more times than you…and I have had a lot more dealings with King Yama than you may think." The mummy replied. The talking was slowly soothing her original anger as if happy to have someone to speak with.
A small sparkle of metal caught Kurama's eye. That's it! The pieces were coming together. Kurama broke in, "Was it painful?" The mummy looked down at the shard of metal branded in her arm, "This? This was no more painful than what might be expected. It was the manner of getting this brand that was more painful than I ever imagined." "So it is true." Kurama said slowly. "If you mean the stories of energy blending experimentation, you are correct." The mummy replied. "Then you must be one of them." Kurama said. "I'm surprised I was never mentioned," The mummy's voice began to quiver with anger, "Hiei knows all about what happened, don't you…you cheap son of a bitch." "Not that." Hiei said. "Bull shit." The mummy replied.
"Um, guys, is it me or is the room shaking?" Kuwabara said suddenly, having somewhat recovered from his initial shock at his near death experience. The room had begun to quiver violently and piece of the ceiling were beginning to collapse. "The rock was weakened by Yusuke's Spirit Gun blast! We'll never make it out of here in time!" Kurama shouted. "WHAT! I'm gonna die? YEAAAAH! I don't wanna die! I don't wanna die! I have to grow my first beard and get married! I don't wanna die!" Kuwabara screeched scampering wildly back and forth.
A small gleaming orb of energy flew through the air and hit Kuwabara square in the temple. He fell over completely out cold. "Pathetic." Hiei said as he batted away stones. "Who did that?" Yusuke said turning around. "I did. We don't need hysterics. We need clear thinking!" The mummy replied making a strange sign with her fingers.
Suddenly, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei found themselves outside of the staircase. It was night out. The streets were crowded with people but from where they were there was no one, not even the mummy. "How the hell did we get out here?" Yusuke asked. "She saved us." Kurama replied coolly taking in a deep breath of air. "What do you mean? And as a matter of fact…where is she?" Yusuke asked scratching the back of his head and looking around for any signs of their mysterious rescuer. "The sign she made with her hands is a simple teleportation trick. Though I never realized that it could be powerful enough to take five people." Kurama replied. "You obviously have never heard of her." Hiei replied scornfully. "No, but she did look familiar. How do you know her?" Kurama asked. "That…is my business." Hiei replied and began to walk away.
Yusuke grinned, "Well, we took care of the case. The pulse was a freaky mummy girl. So what?" "I fear that the case just got more complicated." Kurama said gravely. "Why does that not surprise me?" Yusuke mumbled his grin falling into a dissatisfied frown. "Now, we have to figure out who she is…erm…was working for." Kurama replied. "Who cares? Ask Hiei." Yusuke asked. "Because, Hiei won't tell us…he doesn't believe who he just saw. She could be extremely dangerous and Hiei is being strangely protective of her…We'd better save ourselves a lot of time and just talk to Koenma." Kurama replied.
Hiei looked up into the night sky, "So that's what they did to you…an ironic twist of fate…We meet again, Sasuke Yashasama. My old rival."
