The rain had lingered and the humidity was horrid. Ryu awoke to weak rays of light hitting her face. She woke up only to find that she was alone. She quickly scanned the place down and shrugged. Oh well. Parents are probably worried. She pulled her black hair back in a high ponytail and grabbed her belongings. She walked to the entrance of the cave and shielded her eyes form the sun, the clouds had begun their departure, leaving the birds to sing a farewell song. Faint voices reached her ears as she saw six shadowed figures hovered around a rock. She tilted her head in bewilderment as she began walking in their direction.

Her presence had the chattering come to an abrupt stop, she felt awkward as twelve eyes carefully watched her. She looked around at the company, a young man with a beautiful shade of red hair in a school uniform, next to him a tall boy with black hair and warm brown eyes wearing a cocky smile. Close to him was a young girl with short flowing brown hair with matching brown eyes, she guessed they were a couple. Next to them she found a tall man with orange-ish hair, she didn't find him attractive at all. He gave off a feeling of stupidity. The next figure caught her attention, a short girl, shorter than Hiei, actually about Ryu's height was standing there with a welcoming expression. Her hair ice blue pulled back in two pig tales and the same crimson eyes as Hiei, but these eyes we much more happy. She wore a blue kimono that corresponded well with her hair. Then there was Hiei, isolated on a branch in a near by tree. He had changed his shirt and looked much more revived.

She walked closer to the group, after all they were in the same direction that she had to go to get to her house. The girl that resembled Hiei ran up to her, "Are you Ryu?" Ryu nodded. "I'm Yukina." She grabbed Ryu's hand and walked her over to the circle. Ryu was now thoroughly confused. What the hell was going on? How did they know who she was? She was sure Hiei wouldn't have had boasted about meeting her. She finally found the will to speak, "What the hell is going on?"

The boy with black hair and brown eyes left his companions side and walked over to her, "You might want to sit down for this."

Ryu arched a brow and sat down on the enormous rock in the middle of the circle. He sighed as he began talking, "By the way my name his Yuske and this is Keiko," he said pointing to the girl with brown hair. Ha, knew it. He then pointed to the uglier of the group, "This is Kuwabara and Kurama. You know Yukina and Hiei. Uh…well…we work for Koenma."

Ryu leaned back and rested on the support of her hands and crossed or feet, "He was the ruler of the demon world right?"

"What do you mean was?" asked Kurama.

"Well the two worlds collided and he can't be the ruler of both worlds. So I guess he could just be considered a higher figure of authority."

Kurama smiled at this and allowed Yuske to continue, "Uh yea, I never thought of it that way before. But anyways, we've been trying to figure out a way to close the portal we finally found a way. And uh well, we need you."

"What the hell do I have to do with anything?"

"Ugh, stop interrupting and maybe I'll tell you!"

"Well maybe I wouldn't have to interrupt if you weren't so hesitant talking!" defended Ryu. Keiko started to giggle and Kurama smiled at Ryu's attitude.

Yuske grew impatient and shouted, "Hm…well I don't exactly have to be the one telling you this but you're a gate keeper or whatever and we need you to become a part of our group and help us finally close that damn portal. Happy?"

Ryu smiled and said, "Well why is that such bad news. But…I'm not exactly a good fighter so I'm not so sure if I'll be much help." She paused for a second, then the news finally it her and she remembered how she could become stronger, and that odd feeling that runs through her veins, "So…I'm not completely human am I?"

Yuske sighed, about to explain when Kurama walked up to Ryu and sat next to her on the rock, "Not exactly no. Your mother was a gate keeper and we're not so sure what your father was. Your mother as you know died when you were about five and you were adopted."

Ryu sat up, intrigued, "How did I manage to be in the human world?"

"Well, knowing that the gates would open she sent you to the human world shortly before she dies. Yes both sides would not be safe but she figured that it would take a while for the stronger of the demons to travel from the most dangerous parts into the more human side. Those demons are who will be after you. Don't worry though, we'll protect you on our way there." Ryu applied her usual fake smile, soaking in the information. "When do we start?"

Kurama removed himself from the rock and stood by her side, "Whenever you're ready."

"I need to run a few errands first. Is that ok?"

"Of course, we'll meet you here tonight."

Ryu nodded and had Yukina run up to her side, "I'll go with you! You shouldn't travel alone." Ryu smiled and nodded as Keiko said the same thing. Kuwabara ran and yelled for them to wait for him, chasing Yukina. They soon faded off into the distance, heading for the city.

Hiei jumped down from his tree and walked over to Kurama, "Do you have to research everyone we meet?"

"Well I figured she ought to know." Kurama looked over at Yuske, "You didn't mention the worst part of it."

Yuske scratched the back of his head and starred at the ground, "Uh yea, I really don't want to have to tell her."

Hiei began to walk his own direction. Damn babysitting job.

"Oh hey Ryu!" said a cheery voice from behind the counter.

"Hey, can I get some more of that remedy for the stunning poison?"

The older lady blinked aghast, "You're out already?"

Ryu nodded, "I used the last of it last night."

The older woman smiled and walked into the back of the shop. Keiko scanned the store, "Why do we need to come here?"

"Well, she makes a remedy for me for a stunning poison. Believe it or not I've actually encountered numerous demons with that poison soaked into the blades of their weapons."

"But we have Yukina to heal us!" said Kuwabara.

"You're truly the stupid one of the group aren't you?" said Ryu.

Yukina giggled as Kuwabara tried to defend himself, unsuccessful. The woman came back with a small brown paper bag and handed it to Ryu, "Here you go, I doubled the amount and added a few more remedies I just made. They're good for gashes, you know helps prevent infections and scaring, all that good stuff."

Ryu handed the woman the money and smiled, "I could always count on you." The group began to walk out as Ryu quickly turned around, concerned, "Tell May not to worry about me, I'll see her soon." With that they left the old woman baffled in her own thoughts.

Ryu put the brown bag in her bag and counted the excess change, "Are you guys hungry?" everyone nodded and began throwing names of affordable restaurants.

The night was cold and a refreshing breeze brushed against their faces. Ryu had bought another dagger, she placed her knew one on the strap to her belt and hid her new serrated one within her mid-calf high boots. She had decided to go home for a little bit and inform her `mother' that she was alive. Being as naïve as she could be Ryu told her that her she would be going camping for at least a week with some friends. She would be taking all of her senior skip days. She had changed into a pair of black sticking and a short loose red skirt, easy flexibility incase she had to do more than stabbing. She wore a black tank top that accentuated her figure and had on a thin, black cotton jacket that could zip up in the front. Of course, she couldn't leave with out her trusty bag with her little goodies and surprises.

A new girl with blue hair pulled back into a high ponytail and an infant had appeared to join the group. They introduced themselves as Boton and Koenma. Koenma informed that Boton would be accompanying them, but also failed to tell Ryu that she would have to sacrifice herself for this mission. She would have to find out sooner or later. Yuske turned to Keiko and embraced her in his arms, "Why can't I go?" was all she said. He wiped the tears from her cheeks and gently kissed her, promising that he'll come back. Kuwabara said goodbye to Yukina who was more understanding than Keiko. They kissed goodbye and both Keiko and Yukina hugged Ryu farewell. With that the group split into two, half doomed to live with constant suspense and worry, and the other fighting for their lives.
