The Demon Familiars

Ch.4

Three hooded guards cried out as they were sliced in half. Blood splattered on Hiei's clothing making it cling to his skin in some places. It was a shame that Yusuke's group hadn't known about the second side entrance. Hiei only encountered half the number of guards that the others fought, and he killed them all himself. Rhianon and he split up after they reached the first large room, thinking they could cover more ground. In truth Hiei just wanted to be alone. He worked better in a group, where someone else could cover his blind spot, but avoiding Rhianon was worth a little handicap. The tall demon gave off a strange feeling to his third eye. At first he thought it was malfunctioning, but the feeling would leave every time Rhianon did. After a while it gave him a headache, and that was not something he needed at the moment.
After dismembering the last seven in the room he ran to the next one. There were about twelve, they all lasted around twenty seconds with him. He stopped and leaned against the cool wall, breathing hard. He was actually out of breath.
"Dammit, this isn't good,"Hiei rubbed his shoulder," How can I be tired?"
He inhaled deeply 'Get a grip on yourself, you wont get out of here by complaining'
With that thought in mind he headed for the next room.
It was twice a big as the last, with a twenty foot ceiling. He jogged to the center of the room and halted there. He was not alone. There was a low growl coming from in front of him. Something slinked out of the shadows and loomed over Hiei, bearing teeth the size of kitchen knives.
"And where did you come from?," He asked it, although he wasn't sure if it could understand him any.
It pulled its muzzle back even further until it seemed as if it was grinning.
"Nice teeth," He said dryly.
The monster howled and swung its long tail at him. He dodged it easily, and jumped over it, ending up by its hind leg. The stinger left a crack in the smooth floor. The monster noticed he was no longer in front and whirled around, bringing the tail to whip at Hiei again. This time he quickly moved to the left and sliced his kitana into its paw. The beast whimpered, but its paw was the size of Hiei's torso so there wasn't too much damage.
It roared in pain and charged him.
"Shit," Hiei swore. He was far too weak to use any of his powerful attacks. If he did it would more than likely kill him, and that would be pointless when he was trying to avoid death.
He would have to settle for dodging it and cutting it to ribbons, which could have taken an eternity considering its size.
"Didn't your master ever teach you to sit and stay?!," He hissed at it before he was forced to move aside or be trampled. He had to roll to escape it this time, and his body wasn't better off from hitting the hard floor. Pain shot up his lower back.
"That fucking does it!" Using his anger he evaded a fourth attack, and slashed the beast's side while it ran past him. It yelped and arched its back, then flopped onto the ground, whimpering. Hiei nearly fell over in relief, and he silently hoped he wouldn't find any more.

Yusuke was currently facing his own dilemma, what with everyone on his team badly hurt save for him. The same breed of monster Hiei faced was at the moment charging at Kurama and Touya. They were basicaly out for the count, and couldn't even get out of the way. Yusuke was pushing his body to the limit speed wise, while at the same time trying not to lose it and bring everything crashing down on them by accident.
'Leave them alone you stupid mutt!!,"He screamed at it. The beast ignored the dark haired hero, but was stopped in its tracks when a shadowy blurr zipped past it. It began to shake, then exploded in a wash of dark blood. Yusuke's legs just stopped working at the sight of it and he collapsed onto the floor, still watching the blood pour out and cover the stone like a blanket. He searched for what did it. Kurama was watching in shock, as was Touya.
Jin was still hunched over, hands over his ears, but...half of him was missing? Yusuke tried to understand what his eyes were seeing, but for the life of him could not. Then Jin's missing part appeared again, and Yusuke realized he was staring at a very dark figure. He hoped it wasn't an enemy, he really didn't need that right now. Then the shadow spoke,"You are Yusuke Urameshi, correct?"
It was a man's voice. The figure moved forward. Yusuke then realized why it had been so hard to make him out from a distance, the man was as dark as a shadow itself.
"Yeah, who are you?,"Yusuke answered.
"I am Rhianon," He said it like it would explain everything, it didn't. Yusuke had never heard of anyone named Rhianon.
"I work for Mukuro."
That name he knew,"You work for a demon lord? So then you're a demon obviously."
He nodded.
"Why did you help us?"
"I simply aided other demons, is that a crime?"
Yusuke shook his head,"This doesn't make sense, why are you here? How did you find us?"
"I am here for the same reason you have come. To free the familiars. I did not know you were here until I found this room. There is too much interfearance in this place to sense energy."
Yusuke stared at him until he spoke again,"You should assist your companions, I will take my leave."
The demon sunk back into the darkness, vanishing.
'That guy's almost as stealthy as Hiei.'Yusuke shook his head, then stood and hurried to Kurama and Touya to help them.

After twenty minutes of running Jordan was ready to burst and deflate like a helium balloon. Not once in her life had she ran that much in a day. Apparently exercising was a good habit to have. None of the robed things had found her since Kenji and Alma were recaptured. While she was happy she got away, she did wish there was something she could have done to help them. Running away seemed like a cowardly thing to do, but running away had always been one of her greatest talents.
She slowed to a brisk walk, determined not to stop. If she did, she would probably never want to move again. Her short, black hair was wild, her clothes torn, and her hands bruised from prying the chain out of the wall. She wondered what else was turning purple and green by now. She walked through the first doorway she saw, and suddenly halted. There was a person standing right inside. Jordan nearly walked into her. At least, she thought it was a her. The person was wearing something very similar to a dress, and she wasn't very tall, but it was dark enough she wouldn't be sure unless she decided to feel them up. The person was covered in blood, maybe their own, so she ruled touching him or her out. What ever gender this person happened to be their face was really pretty, even with the blood. She almost doubted it was a male.
Jordan realized she was staring just as she heard a low growl from further inside the room.
The person's eyes went wide and they yelled, "Move!"
No, the voice was much too deep to be female.
Jordan got shoved none to gently out the doorway and tumbled back into the hall. Her head swam when it hit the stone wall. She heard an inhuman roar and saw the...guy get thrown face up onto the floor, ten feet away from where she was sitting.
Then she saw the creature that made the noise. The face made her think wolf, but it had a mane like a Lion, and it sounded like one as well. It raised one clawed paw to strike at its victim, but the guy suddenly opened his eyes, and then he was no longer there. She saw him standing off to the monster's right.
'How the hell did he...?'
Then she was snapped out of her thought as she realized the monster was staring at her. She slid her back up the wall for balance.
'Nice dog-kitty, please don't chew on me. If I run it will probably chase me, so I'm not moving an inch'She thought.
Jordan was having a staring contest with the monster as she decided what to do.
She saw the beast tense and realized it was going to rush her. The guy was suddenly there, shoving her backwards again," Run, you idiot!"
He was strong, but she didn't think someone his size could fight a thing that big and survive. A second later she saw something fly out at him, and he wasn't paying attention.
"Look out!"
He turned too late. The monster's tail, which had a stinger on it apparently, caught his side. Except he started to move away and the force of it sent him flying sideways, and she was in his path. The impact of his body hitting hers sent her on her back, with him on top. It knocked the wind out of her. The she heard a pained sigh. He was still conscious, even after that. She vaguely noticed his eyes were a strange color before they closed and he passed out. She felt something warm spreading across her stomach and soaking into her jeans. He was bleeding on her. While she wasn't superstitious, she did consider having someone die on top of her as negative. The room felt hotter for some reason, like she sat too close to a furnace for awhile. She managed to sit up but not move him any further off her. The monster hadn't forgotten she was there, it towered in the large doorway glaring at her. By then she could almost see her self on fire it hurt so badly, a biting pain like a hundred fire ants. It got worse and she screamed, somewhere in that instance the monster lunged for her. Then a strange, comforting warmth spread through her entire body chasing the burn away, she didn't feel afraid anymore. Then the room grew dark as she drifted off into nothingness.

A shadow moved, then a man formed out of it. Rhianon gazed down at the two blood covered people. The remains of the beast which had tried to kill them both smoldered against the floor. That was the result of a familiar finding a compatable demon. Or, more importantly, the result of one finding out they were compatable with this particular demon.
'Hiei'He thought'I knew you were not simply a demon, despite your best efforts to prove me incorrect'
Rhianon heard several voices nearby. They belonged to the four sent by the Spirit World.
He lifted Hiei off the woman and covered him in his cape, mostly to hide him from sight, and to put pressure on his wound. He let the darkness cover him and slipped away unnoticed.

Yusuke and company were again shocked when they found out the enemy had pulled up steaks and fled.Yusuke doubted it was over, because the familiars weren't there. Kurama and Touya assured him they would be fine, and besides Yusuke couldn't possibly have carried all three of them. They would have gone back the way they came but the side entrance was blocked, so the front entrance was the only option.
He looked at Jin. The wind master's left ear had gone completely deaf, but he explained to Yusuke that it happened to him before and he would regain hearing in it by tomorrow. He glanced over his shoulder at Kurama. The fox spirit was lagging behind, he hadn't fully recovered yet. The ice magician wasn't fairing much better, he was even further behind.
"Are you guys sure you're ok?," He called to them.
Kurama smiled," We will be fine, this shouldn't be your biggest concern at the moment."
Yusuke frowned at him, unsatisfied by his friend's response.
"Urameshi!," Jin cried.
Yusuke gasped when he say what lay in front of them. A young woman covered in blood.
Kurama ran to the fallen girl and quickly felt her neck for a pulse," She is still alive," He told the others. Then something sent power up his arm in tingling rush. He held his hand up, dark blood smeared across his palm. That was what caused it, the life force energy in the blood. He gently lifted up the woman's shirt. It made a wet sucking sound, which meant the blood was fresh. There was a large bruise near the waist of her jeans, but nothing that she could have lost that much from. Which meant it belonged to someone else, and from the feeling that remained Kurama could guess who.
"Hiei," He whispered.
"Hey Kurama,"Yusuke called to him," Come take a look at this."
Yusuke was waving a hand in front of his face attempting to blow away the smell. Whatever it was previously, it was now reduced to a greasy clump or two of ash.
"Who does this remind you of? The attack I mean..."
Kurama nodded,'Yes, I know what you're thinking. I had the same idea when I touched the young woman."
"I think the Rhianon guy wasn't alone..."
Jin glanced back at the girl," I take it she's a familiar then. Do ye think we should bring her back with us?"
"I suppose leaving her here would be pointless,"Touya said. He put one arm under the woman's legs, the other under her shoulders and lifted her up. He was the same height as her, but carried her as if she weighed nothing.
"Now lets get the hell out of here,"Yusuke said.
The group continued on through the deserted passage ways. Once they reached the out side half an hour later, Botan's communicator beeped.
Yusuke pulled it out of his pocket and clicked it open. Botan's blue-haired head appeared in the mirror.
"Hello, so how goes the mission?,"She had obviously returned to her normal cheerful self.
"They got away, and we got out butts kicked. Where's that pacifer junky? I'm giving him a piece of my mind,"He growled.
Botan flinched, and gave a nervous laugh,"I'm not anywhere near him at the moment. I'm actualy at Genkai's place right now. Did you find anything?"

"Yeah. Her,"He said dryly, motioning to the blood covered bundle in Touya's arms.
Botan shrieked,"Oh no, please tell me she isn't dead?!"
"Nope, that's not her blood. She's just asleep."
"Well then, I'll tell Koenma the good news, bye." Her image faded out.
"Wait! Botan, what good news?,"Yusuke yelled at her, but she was already gone.
"Why me?"He groaned.
"It's nice to see Botan in her cheerful mood again,"Kurama said.
"Yusuke shook his head,"Let's just go."
