~~~~~
It had been a fairly normal day for Yusuke so far. Nothing major had happened and he was grateful for his small break from any sort of paranormal activity.
He had been wandering around town, enjoying his day off. He had spent some time at the arcade but had left, feeling peaceful for once. Deciding to take a walk he had headed toward the park where a few small children were playing in the distance.
It was calming, the soft breeze that would blow past him, cooling the suns rays making it the perfect temperature. The leaves had almost all left the trees, leaving the branches barren as a sign of the upcoming winter. He could tell that the first snowfall of the year would be soon, even if the temperature didn't suggest so.
Running a hand through his hair, so he could double check that it was still slicked back in it's usual style, he sat down on a nearby bench, enjoying the shade from the branches overhead.
The laughter and giggling of the children could be heard behind him, causing a small smile to form on his lips. It was things like that which reminded him exactly how important him job was, making him happy that he hadn't screwed up and gotten the whole ningen race killed off. Still, Koenma could at least pay him…
The laughter stopped abruptly, causing Yusuke to glance back in wonder. What he saw made him curse silently under his breath.
Standing a few feet away from the children was a youkai.
He had large, feathery black wings folded behind his back, which resembled those of a fallen angel. A small pair of horns sat on the top of his head, partially covered by his long black hair. His eyes were a deep red colour, making him appear more demonic. Fangs were visible though the slight smirk he wore on his face, giving him an arrogant look.
“Urameshi Yusuke?” He asked, an amused tone to his deep voice, which seemed to send a chill down Yusuke's spine.
The children stood, wide-eyed starring at him, one of them holding a soccer ball, motionlessly in his hands. Cursing once more Yusuke moved quickly in between the children and the youkai, glancing back at the children quickly giving them a slight mutter of “Leave.” before turning back to the youkai, giving him a heated glare.
“Who wants to know?” Yusuke demanded, his tone serious and slightly dangerous.
The youkai scoffed, letting a small “Tsk” sound escape his lips before saying, “I need not introduce myself to one who will be dead soon.”
Yusuke's glare became deeper, and his reiki flared slightly, as a sign of his anger. “A little cocky for a youkai who hasn't even been mentioned in my files yet.” …Okay so he lied, they weren't exactly his files, and he never bothered looking at them anyway, but if he was able to intimidate the youkai, he would try anything.
The youkai laughed, with a deep and dark sound, as he suddenly disappeared only to return seconds later right before Yusuke, a long razor-like claw pressing against the tantei's neck. “Trust me, I'll be showing up on those files in no time. I just need to build up my reputation. Killing the infamous Urameshi Yusuke should be good enough.” Yusuke's eyes widened in surprise, and frustration at the fact that he was unable to sense this youkai's movements at all.
Relaxing slightly as the youkai pulled his hand away Yusuke returned to glaring. “I'd like to see you try.” He threatened, his voice low and menacing.
“Oh I will.” The youkai said, his grin still present. He moved closer to Yusuke, whispering in his ear, “You'll just have to wait for a while.” He pulled away, placing a hand on his hip, his grin widening, “I like my victims to be terrified before I kill them,” His voice was dark and threatening as he spoke, “And I believe that the ignorance of the time of their death may just be the best way to terrify them.” And before Yusuke had any time to react, the youkai had disappeared, leaving the tantei standing in the middle of the park, a shocked look on his face.
`Koenma will want to hear about this.' He said sighing, not looking forward to contacting the small prince.
~~~~~

Akina yawned, stepping out of her bed, Kuroi jumping off her lap landing gracefully on the floor.

Reaching down to pet the cat she glanced at her clock, surprised at the fact that it was already 11:00. She rarely slept that late, but she blamed it on the fact that she had been up for a long time the previous night thinking of the events of the day.

How was she expected to react when she learned that her cousin had died and been brought back to life only to become some weird supernatural crime fighter?

She sighed, picking the brush up and ran it though her tangled hair, and pulled it quickly into a ponytail, Kuroi brushing against her leg. Ignoring the cat she quickly threw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt before making her way into the kitchen.

Surprised to find a note on the counter she picked it up, examining it. It was in Yusuke's handwriting and this fact surprised her even more. Yusuke was actually up before she was…

`Hey Akina,

I'm just going out for a bit. Thought I'd tell you because you tend to worry a lot. Don't worry about me I'm just going to the arcade. You can find me there later if you absolutely need to. There's rice in the cooker for you, and I should be back in a couple hours.

Yusuke.'

She blinked, looking towards the rice cooker, and sure enough, there was rice sitting in it waiting for her. She didn't even know Yusuke knew how to even turn on the rice cooker, let alone make rice with it.

Then again, he was home alone a lot before she came and he would have to know how do make some things. It was either learn to cook or starve.

Dishing some rice into a bowl with another yawn Akina quickly ate it deciding she had a few errands to run. She ignored Kuroi as he mewed, wanting attention from his owner. She did however place some food into his dish before grabbing her wallet and making her way to the front entrance. Slipping her shoes on she left the apartment, locking it behind her as she made her way down the hall to the elevator.

Once outside the building she headed for the small corner grocery store, deciding to pick a few things up for dinner.

She only bought a few things, enough for dinner that night deciding that she would do the actual grocery shopping the next time she was at the store.

However, she was a little discouraged to find that she was running low on money. She didn't have too much of her savings left. She had wanted to use that money to get into a good collage but once she had moved in with her Aunt and cousin, she had been using the money to buy food. She only had about 10 000 yen left. That much wouldn't last long.

She sighed trying to figure out how her two remaining relatives had survived. From what she knew her Aunt didn't have a job, and Yusuke didn't have the attention span to be able to have one. Although their previous house had burned down. Maybe they were living off of insurance money…

But that didn't help Akina out too much. She couldn't exactly just ask her Aunt for money. She was the one that was cooking after all. If she didn't pay for the groceries she wouldn't feel right.

The only solution she could find would be for her to get a job. As long as it didn't interfere with her studies she should be able to get away with it.

She would have to cut down on her spending a little though. She had been spending so much of her money on food, deciding every night to make some gourmet dish for Yusuke and her wallet was suffering.

She sighed returning to the apartment, placing the key in the hole she opened the door kicking her shoes off and setting the bag on the counter. Only placing what needed to be refrigerated away, deciding to finish the rest later.
Returning to the entrance she put her shoes back on deciding to go for a walk. It would help her clear her head, and maybe give her an idea of what job she could apply for. Hopefully she would be able to get one. If Yusuke found out about the shortage of money he would flip out. Mostly for the fact that she was using her own money to buy him food. But she couldn't help it…She didn't want to ask her aunt for money. It would be too embarrassing.

Besides. Her Aunt was never home anyway. Akina could count on one hand how many times she had seen her aunt since she had moved in. She had heard her come in a few times during the night, but she was always gone in the morning.

Sighing she placed her feet back into her shoes and left, locking the door behind her. Making her way down to the elevator she had soon left the building, walking down the street hoping to find any place that was hiring. Or even just clear her head.

Passing the crowds of people she made her way out of the residential area of the neighborhood, the large apartment building disappearing behind her as she found herself surrounded by smaller buildings and shops.

She didn't find anything that had a help wanted sign and looked down with a sigh. Of course, in looking down she couldn't see where she was going, and in a crowded street, that wasn't good.

She fell the ground, after walking straight into something, or someone rather. Before she looked up to see who it was she began apologizing instantly. “I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!”

“Ah...no It's alright. Don't worry about it.” It was a masculine voice, rather deep and she looked up at the man. He looked to be around her age, maybe a little older. He however wasn't on the ground like she was. He had managed to stay standing.

His dark hair, which barely reached his shoulders was tied back, though some strands managed to find their way in front of his face. His eyes were a deep navy colour, which stood out through his black hair. His skin was slightly tanned, though not too dark and he was wearing a simple pair of jeans and a black T-shirt.

He reached his hand out to her, and Akina blinked starring at it. He smiled down at her. “Here, I'll help you up. It's the least I can do after running into you like that.”

“N-no! I was the one that ran into you! I'm really sorry…I wasn't watching where I was going.” She said sheepishly, feeling horrible.

“No, I've already said it's no problem. Now let me help you up.”

She nodded slightly placing her hand in his as he pulled her up. He was tall, a lot taller than she was. Akina wasn't short, but she was around average height. “Thanks…” She muttered, embarrassment showing though her words.

“Don't worry about it. So what's got you in such a hurry? You look a little upset.” He asked, casually placing a hand into one of his pockets.

“Ah…well I'm looking for a job actually, but none of the places I've been to seem willing to hire…” She said with a sigh. She really needed that money…

“A job? Well if you want I could try and get you in where I work. Do you like cooking?”

Akina's eyes lit up. “Y-yes! But…you don't have to...I mean it's a lot of work on your part and I-”

He cut her of, smiling as he talked. “No, it's no trouble. If you follow me I'll take you to the shop so you can meet my boss. My name's Kaishi by the way.”

“K-Kaishi?” She asked, blinking in surprise. What a strange name…

Kaishi laughed at her reaction, “My parents had an interesting sense of humor.” He answered grinning.

“I…I can see that. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to react that way…”

“Nah, I get it all the time. Don't worry about it. And I don't believe you've told me your name…”

“Oh! I'm sorry! I'm Urameshi Akina.” She blinked realizing at that moment that Kaishi hadn't given her his last name. Not that it mattered…

“Urameshi?” He questioned, eyes wide slightly.

Akina sighed. “And before you ask, yes I'm related to Urameshi Yusuke. We're cousins.” Honestly…how much trouble did Yusuke manage to get into?

Kaishi laughed slightly before saying “Alright then Akina-chan, the restaurant's just over this way. It's not much, but it pays well. 900 yen an hour.”

Akina's eyes lit up once more. “Really?” She asked in disbelief

Kaishi nodded with a smile. “Yeah. It's good work too, as long as you like cooking.”

Akina nodded “Yeah! I've always like cooking. It's one of the few things I'm good at.”

“Well then, I guess you're going to the right place. That's it just up there.” He said pointing towards a rather large building.

“Wow…It's really big…is it just a restaurant?” She asked blinking in surprise.

“Yeah, there are a few business rooms though. That takes up some of the space. But there's around 100 or so tables, so I hope you'll be alright cooking under pressure.”

“I-I'll do my best…”

“Alright then.” He said with a smile pushing the door open and waiting for Akina to enter before entering himself. “We'll just go around back here.”

The owner was rather…plump, his stomach falling over his belt. He was cleaning who-knows-what out of his teeth with his fingers, his hair looked as if it hadn't been washed in days, and he had a cigarette sticking out the corner of his mouth.

He looked up as the two of them entered the room. “Kaishi? You're not working today. What are you doing here?” He asked taking the cigarette out of his mouth and holding it between two fingers. His voice was rather gruff, and deep. But not the soothing deepness that Kaishi's voice had. His was more like…a hippopotamus.

“This is Urameshi Akina. She's been looking around for a job for a while now. And I knew you were looking for a new-”

The owner cut him off. “Can she cook?” He asked, looking her over, making her feel slightly uncomfortable.

“Uh…y-yes.” She answered slowly, still a little nervous.

“You're hired. When can you start?”

“Um…As soon as you need me.” She said, voice still shaky.

“Good. You start tomorrow at seven.”

Kaishi shook his head. “She's still in school, right?”

The owner sighed, and Akina blinked. She had completely forgotten about that…

“Alright. Just come here right after school. Kaishi's working then too. He can help you out a bit.”

“O-okay.” She said, still uncomfortable

“Now if you don't mind, we're busy tonight so it would be better now if you left.”

“Thank you...”

After Kaishi had led her out he paused, leaning on the outside of the building. “Sorry about that. He's really not that bad. Must be having an off day.”

“N-no don't worry about it. A jobs a job anyway.”

A smile formed at the corner of his mouth as he chuckled slightly. “You're an interesting person Akina-chan. Nothing like I would have expected of Urameshi's cousin.”

“Do you know him?” She questioned. The way he was talking about him made it seem like he did.

“Haven't known him that long, but yeah we've met. Don't know him well enough to be able to tell anything though.”

“Oh.” She didn't quite know what he meant by that but figured it didn't matter.

“Now I hope you don't mind, but I've got to get going. Stuff to do. You can find your way home right?”

“Um…Yeah. Thank you very much Kaishi-san.”

“Don't worry about it.”

~~~~~
Akina entered the apartment, this time making sure her shoes were neatly placed where they belonged. Sighing she moved to the kitchen, so she could put away the things she had left on the counter.
She blinked in surprise, realizing they were already put away, as were the dishes from earlier she had left.
She walked over to the living room to find Yusuke sitting on the couch, looking rather troubled.
“Yusuke?” She asked, concerned slightly. IT wasn't often that Yusuke was seen like this, so naturally, she was a little worried.
“Oh…Hi Akina. Didn't hear you come in.”
“Yusuke...Did…did you actually clean or was that some random cleaning demon?” She questioned, a bit of a sarcastic tone to her voice.
“Hmm? Oh that was me. Didn't have anything better to do.”
Okay…now she was worried. Yusuke always had something better to do when it came to cleaning. “Okay Yu-chan. What's bothering you?”
Yusuke sent a glare in her direction but said nothing regarding the nickname. “Nothing's bothering me.” He answered turning his head in the other direction.
“Yusuke, I'm not stupid.”
“I can argue that.”
At that she glared at him and without a word stormed down the hallway, retreating to her room, slamming the door behind her.
“Oops.” Yusuke said blinking in surprise. He hadn't meant for that to happen…
Then again, she had always been a little sensitive when it came to stuff about…well her. Maybe he went a little too far.
Yusuke sighed, raising from the couch, and making his way down the hallway until he made it to her door. He knocked softly, waiting for a reply.
He didn't get one.
He sighed once more, before saying, “Come on Akina…You know I didn't mean it. I'm sorry all right? Just come out…”
He did get a response this time, though it wasn't quite what he had expected.
She was laughing. He blinked in confusion. “Um…I think I'm missing the joke…”
The door opened, revealing Akina, large smile on his face. “You know what you sounded like there Yusuke?” She asked, still giggling like a little schoolgirl.
“…No.”
Her smile grew. “You sounded like some guy apologizing to his girlfriend.”
Yusuke's face looked like this. o______0 “What?”
She giggled again, leaning on the doorframe for balance.
Yusuke continued to give her the strange look. “Akina…that's not funny. That's just…weird. I mean…gyah…”
Akina, who had just finished laughing, burst out into another fit of giggles at his reaction.
Yusuke just rolled his eyes and returned to the couch, letting himself fall back on it. He kicked away Kuroi as he tried to curl up beside him with a muttering of “stupid cat” before Akina had walked in to the room.
Kuroi only gave Yusuke a small mew before walking proudly over to Akina's side. Akina bent down to stroke him behind his ears before sitting down on the edge of the couch, Kuroi then leaping into her lap.
“Anyway Yusuke, I still want to know what's bothering you.”
“Ah, just a run in with a youkai. Nothing to worry—”
He was cut off as a wide-eyed Akina suddenly jumped up, (earning a hiss from Kuroi, who had fallen to the floor) and quickly moved to his edge of the couch. She grabbed his arm, twisting it in a weird direction, seemingly looking for something.
”Are you okay??” She asked, slight panic in her voice as she continued to search for wounds.
“Ouch! I was until you started attacking me…” He said wincing in pain as she bent his leg the wrong way.
She dropped his leg, calmly returning to her side of the couch, giving him a sheepish grin. “Sorry…”
“It's nothing. The problem is that I have no info on the youkai and he just seemed to come out of nowhere. I talked to Koenma and he doesn't have any information on him. I was out looking for him for a bit there, but couldn't find a single trace of him. It's like he just disappeared.” He sounded a little stressed…
“Can they do that? I mean…is that some weird power they have? Teleportation or something?”
Yusuke shook his head. “Not that I know of. The closest thing I can think of would be moving fast enough to make it look like teleportation. I work with a guy who can do that, but that's the closest thing I've seen to teleportation.”
“So he just…disappeared?”
“Seems like it. He came out of nowhere too. No information on him…”
“That's a problem right?”
”Yeah, not knowing anything at all isn't something that's recommended.” Yusuke said with a sigh. He then let out a small chuckle. “Kurama's going to hate it. He always needs to know everything about the enemy before fighting. It's almost gotten him killed. Quite a few times.”
“Kurama?”
“Shuuichi.”
“Oh, right.”
Their conversation was interrupted when Botan suddenly appeared. “Yusuke!”
Akina shrieked. “I thought you said they couldn't teleport!” She yelled jumping back. Several feet back.
Yusuke had also jumped, though not quite as far as Akina. “Dammit Botan!”
Jumping off her oar Botan smiled widely, with her usual grin. “Sorry Yusuke!” She said cheerfully.
“How the hell can you be so damn cheerful…” Yusuke muttered, knowing he should be used to it by now.
Akina was still a little freaked out from the fact that Botan had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. “Um…”
Botan didn't hear her. “Oh the reason I'm here Yusuke is that Keiko said she can't look after the little guy anymore.”
“Little guy?” Yusuke questioned, not understanding what Botan was talking about.
His Question was answered of course, when a small “Puu” sound was heard.
Yusuke groaned falling back down on the couch. “Nooo…”
Botan giggled pulling a random blue…thing…out from behind her back.
Akina shrieked once more, though this time it was more like a squeal. “Oh my god! It's so cute!! What is it???” She asked, taking him from Botan and holding it in her arms, much like a Mother would her baby.
“His name is Puu!” Botan said cheerfully, earning another groan from Yusuke. “He's a reflection of Yusuke's inner thoughts.”
Akina blinked, looking from Puu to Yusuke, and back to Puu.
Then she burst out laughing.
Yusuke groaned again, grabbing one of the pillows that was decorating the couch, and attempted to strangle himself with it.
“He's so cute! This is supposed to be Yusuke??” She asked, cuddling Puu as she sat back down on the couch.
”Puu!”
“Well Yusuke, I've got to get going, Keiko just asked me to drop off Puu for you. Reikai's a little busy right now, you know, with the mystery man and everything.”
“Don't remind me.”
“Nice seeing you again Akina-chan!” And with that Botan disappeared.
Akina didn't seem to notice though as she was tickling Puu with one of her fingers. Squealing in delight every time the small “Puu” sound was heard.
“Yusuke he's adorable!”
“Yeah yeah. Stupid penguin…rabbit…whatever it is.” Kuroi seemed to agree with Yusuke, seemingly jealous of the spirit beast, who was receiving
Akina laughed setting Puu (Who once again said “Puu!”) down on the couch before rising to the kitchen. “I'm going to go make us some dinner.”
“You do that.”
Akina rolled her eyes. “And you're coming with me.” She said grabbing his arm and dragging him over to the kitchen area.
“What?!”
“It's about time you learned how to cook.” Akina said, cheerfully.
“I don't need—“
“Yes you do. Now stop complaining. You know how to use the rice cooker, so cooking can't be that hard right?”
~Three and half burnt and two poisoned meals later…~
“Maybe it would be better if I cooked…”
“Good plan.”
“Puu!”
Squeal!
“Stupid spirit beast.”
Notes
10 000 yen is about $90 American, $115 Canadian.
Kaishi basically translates into “mysterious death”. Such a friendly name^_^
Minimum wage in Japan is 641 yen…although that's from 2003 so it may not be completely accurate. But still, 900 yen should be good^.~
Oh…and random tidbit of info that has no purpose to the story! ^_^: Yen is pronounced “en” not “yen” …yeah…I think it's strange too but hey^.~ Yay for my random Japanese knowledge *shifty eyes*
Oh and I thought I'd randomly give you this; Tora means tiger, Takai means death (another friendly name. That was actually my first choice for Kaishi, but I decided to use it for Takai.) and Akina means….crap…something about autumn *shifty eyes* Yay for horrible translations^^;;; I'll get back to you on Akina…I do know Aki means autumn though. So yeah…something with autumn.
Not really a big fan of this chapter either, but at least we're getting into some stuff. Yay. Actually it's just mostly the part with Kaishi that I don't like o_0 Hmm…Ah well. I've got big plans for him, as well as the mystery youkai^.~
Oh and as for the random cooking bit in the end….I had just eaten about 5 oreos…sugar….yup^^'
Quote of the Chapter
“Well you, and you, and you, and you, and you, and you, and you... and me…" - Yusuke, to Sensui
