“It seems they are keeping a secret from us,” Kuwabara’s mother said.

Kuwabara and Kurama opened the door to the kitchen.

“Okay, Mom, can we continue dinner now?” Kuwabara asked.

His mother nodded, and they took their places at the table, but Kurama watched Shizuru carefully so she wouldn’t hurt his shoulder again.

A few minutes passed in silence.

“Kuwabara, could I speak to you after dinner?” his mother asked.

“But what about Kur-Suichi?” Kuwabara said, getting very annoyed at himself for messing up.

“Well, he can walk up to your room and wait for you,” his mother replied.

Kurama and Kuwabara looked at each other. Kuwabara’s mother noticed the brief look of desperation in Kurama’s eyes and the sympathy in Kuwabara’s eyes. Then they looked away and went back to their food quietly.

Dinner ended without much talking.

“Good luck, Suichi,” Kuwabara whispered.

Kuwabara followed his mother into the living room as Kurama stood up, making sure to put his weight on his right leg.

He paused for a moment then took a deep breath and leaned on the table and got as close to the door as he could.

“Are you tired, Suichi?” Mr. Kazuma asked.

“I guess,” Kurama replied.

“Well, go up to Kuwabara’s room and wait there. I’ll call your mother and tell her you’re staying here.”

“Thank you,” Kurama said, bowing slightly.

He walked slowly, but when he reached the door, he put too much pressure on his leg. His legs crumpled under him, but he grabbed the doorknob to make sure he’d be able to get back up.

“Suichi? Are you okay?”

“I- I don’t know what happened…” Kurama said quietly.

WITH KUWABARA AND HIS MOM

Kuwabara sat down on the couch next to his mom.

“Kuwabara honey, can I ask you a question?”

“Go ahead.”

“Why do you hesitate when you call your friend Suichi? And I could have sworn you called him ‘Kurama’ at least twice tonight.”

“I told you mom, it’s a nickname, and I’m just too used to calling him that so I can’t call him Suichi!”

“Alright, but why does he have a limp, and your sister mentioned that when she grabbed his shoulder, she heard him moan. Is there something you’re keeping from us?”

Kuwabara frowned. He didn’t like making his mother upset, but he couldn’t tell her what was going on.

WITH KURAMA

Kurama opened the door and slowly walked over to the steps.

He sighed. “I wish Kuwabara were here…” he said softly.

Then his sight, which had been dimming, blacked out completely.

Oh no! Hiei’s Jagan wore off!’ Kurama thought.

Shizuru was watching Kurama from the door, and she saw his expression change from calm to scared. She frowned.

Kurama slowly sat down on the steps, deciding he’d wait for Kuwabara. Then Shizuru walked over and put a hand on his back.

Kurama tensed and reached into his hair for his rose. But then he froze. What if it was a human he was about to draw his rosewhip on? But what if it was a demon?

Kurama started to tremble, and his sightless eyes started to fill with tears.

Shizuru felt a tug at her heart when she saw him start to cry.

“Are you okay, Suichi?” she asked softly.

“I- I can’t see…” Kurama mumbled.

Shizuru was surprised, but then realized that he really couldn’t see. His eyes had a faraway look in them, like they were looking through instead of at something. And he was looking to the right of where Shizuru really was.

Kuwabara was going upstairs to his room when he saw Kurama sitting on the steps, looking like he was going to cry, sitting next to his sister.

“Kurama? Are you okay?” he asked.

“Kuwabara, I can’t see and I don’t know what’s going on…” Kurama said softly.

Kuwabara kneeled down next to Kurama.

“C’mon, lets go up to my room,” he said.

Kurama nodded and held out his hand. Being dependant felt strange…

NO! Stop thinking like that!’ Kurama reprimanded himself sternly. ‘I need his help, and he’s being nice!

Shizuru stood up.

“Kuwabara, please, I want to know what’s going on!”

Kuwabara hesitated. “It’s complicated. I don’t know…”

“Come on Kuwabara, I want to know! You’re my brother! You shouldn’t have to keep things from me!”

Kuwabara shrugged, then took Kurama’s hand and helped him up. Then they started to make their way up the stairs.

“C’mon, we gotta ask Hiei why you can’t see,” Kuwabara said. “‘Cause he was the one who was taking care of that department.”

As they entered Kuwabara’s room, Shizuru stayed outside the door, listening to what was going on. * * *

So, what do you think of this chapter? I think it’s shorter than the others, but it got something done.

Review if you wish.
