Chapter 12: Camp, and a Nightmare

< p>They continued walking, Kurama in the lead, Kuwabara behind him, and Yusuke in the back.

“So, how much farther to get where we wanna go?” Kuwabara asked.

“Now much farther to his castle,” Kurama replied.

“Good, I’m getting tired,” Kuwabara said.

Yusuke rolled his eyes and walked up right next to Kuwabara.

“If you’re tired, imagine how Kurama is feeling right now,” he whispered. “First, those injuries, then Baldock…” Kuwabara’s mouth dropped open.

“Geez, maybe we better rest,” he said.

Yusuke smiled.

“Hey, Kurama? You wanna take a little breather?”

Kurama shook his head and continued walking.

“We have to get Hiei away from Karasu as fast as possible,” he said, sounding slightly out of breath.

Yusuke closed his eyes and shook his head. Then he heard a soft ‘thud’ and quick footsteps.

“Urameshi!”

Yusuke quickly opened his eyes and found Kuwabara was not with him. He ran into the next clearing, and saw Kuwabara kneeling next to Kurama. He rushed forward and kneeled next to them both.

“What happened?”

Kuwabara shrugged. “Probably fainted from fatigue. I saw him start to limp again a little while ago. He said it himself it was harder to walk normally with the injury.”

“So he walked himself out,” Yusuke said. He chuckled and Kuwabara glared at him.

“No, I’m not saying it’s funny, I’m saying that it just sounds so funny to walk yourself out.”

Kuwabara shrugged, then chuckled himself. “Yeah, I guess.”

But then he turned serious.

“It’s the late afternoon, Urameshi. We’ve been walking all day, and Kurama’s beat. It’s gonna be cold tonight. What should we do?”

Yusuke growled. “Why does this sound like one of those stupid ‘what kind of friend are you?’ personality quizzes?”

Kuwabara rolled his eyes. “Who cares? It’s a real question too. So, what do we do, Urameshi?”

Yusuke looked around. They were on the outskirts of the forest.

“Well, lets go a little back into the forest for shelter, and make a fire. There’s plenty of wood here.”

“Where are we gonna find shelter in a forest, Yusuke?”

Yusuke growled again.

“I don’t know! A fallen tree or something!”

Kuwabara sighed. “Ok, we’ll look for something.”

They entered the forest, and looked around. There was a clump of trees in one area. Yusuke led Kuwabara, who was carrying Kurama, into the center of the area.

There were two fallen trees, and a clear space in the middle. Yusuke grinned. A perfect area! He looked back at Kuwabara, who smiled back.

“So, you go get firewood, I’ll take care of Kurama,” Yusuke said. Kuwabara nodded.

He left, and Yusuke sat next to Kurama. He brushed some hair out of his face.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this, let alone Kuwabara’s trusting me to do this,” he muttered. “After what happened earlier.”

He heard some rustling, and Kuwabara entered the clearing, his arms full with sticks. He laid them down in the middle of the clearing, and sat down to try to start a fire.

“I hope it doesn’t rain,” Yusuke said, looking up at the sky.

“Yeah, me too,” he heard Kuwabara grunt as he struggled with the sticks.

Then they heard a low rumble. They froze.

“Kuwabara, please tell me that was your stomach,” Yusuke mumbled.

Kuwabara shook his head. “Sorry, buddy.”

“Damn! No fricken fair!” Yusuke yelled, kicking a tree.

Then he sighed.

“Ok, lets get under the trees,” he said.

Kuwabara got under one tree, and Yusuke and Kurama got the other. Thankfully, they were only five yards apart. Yusuke sighed and waited for the rain.

He heard a loud -BOOM-, then he heard the gentle pitter patter of rain. Then, after thirty seconds, the rain started to pick up speed. Yusuke could heard Kuwabara’s snoring, and rolled his eyes.

He was about to drift off when he heard a shaky breath and looked over at Kurama. His face was pale and he was shivering. Yusuke mentally cursed.

How am I supposed to fix this? We don’t have any blankets, and I am NOT sleeping with him!

Kurama let out a shuddering breath and shivered. Yusuke sighed.

“I guess I’m sleeping with him,” he muttered.

He slowly and carefully moved Kurama to a curled-up position and then laid down with his back against Kurama’s.

Eventually, the noise of the rain lulled Yusuke asleep.

As Kuwabara had predicted, it had gotten colder and that wasn’t helping Kurama’s condition at all.

As the night wore on, he tossed and turned on the slightly damp ground his face covered in sweat, obviously having a nightmare.

-Kurama found himself just outside of Karasu’s castle. He wondered how he had gotten here so fast.

He shrugged it off, happy that he could get Hiei away from Karasu faster.

He walked up to the castle and was about to summon his rosewhip when he heard a noise.

He walked over to the wall that surrounded the back of the castle. He heard a low rumble and backed away.

(The rumble was when Yusuke and Kuwabara heard the thunder.)

Then a part of the wall crumbled down, and Kurama could see Hiei and Karasu standing next to each other. Hiei had a bored look on his face, and Kurama noticed that his headband and his shirt were off.

“Hiei?” Kurama called. “C’mon, lets go!”

Hiei looked puzzled. “Go where?” he asked. Kurama frowned.

“Away from here!” he said. “Away from Karasu!”

“Why would I want to leave?” Hiei asked. Kurama blinked.

“Because… because I’m your friend, Hiei,” he said. “And so are Yusuke and Kuwabara, right?”

Hiei paused. Then he looked up at Karasu. Karasu’s eyes glinted. Hiei looked back at Kurama.

“No, Kurama.”

-BOOM-

A cold wind started to blow, and Kurama shivered. Karasu turned and started to walk back into the castle. Hiei took another look at Kurama, then turned and followed Karasu. The door slammed shut.

Kurama fell to his knees. His eyes filled with tears, but then he hastily wiped them away. More moisture covered his face, and he looked up, then realized it was raining.

Deciding he didn’t care, he lay down and closed his eyes, hoping it would just all end. * * *

So, what d’you think? No, Kurama’s not gonna be suicidal, he just thinks that this dream is real, and he’s feeling real cruddy.
