Chapter Six: A Very Long Flight

Cassie's POV

I leaned my head on the back of my seat with a sigh. I was going to have to spend hours sitting next to Hiei, one of the most unsociable people I had ever met. True, his silence made him more mysterious, which did make me curious, but I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get much socializing done with him. He probably avoided all social gatherings like the plague.

I looked over at Kaline and Kurama to see if I could have a conversation with them, but I found them flirting and kissing. There was no way I was going to interrupt THAT! I did not feel like having Kaline bite my head off.

The people in front of me -I think they were called Koenma and Botan- were busy chatting about demons and Reikai. I didn't know enough about any of that to even try and talk with them. Damn. I was left with only one person who I could talk to... Hiei.

"Hiei," I said hesitantly. "Why were you so angry with Kuwabara for flirting with Yukina? Are you related to her?" I had just asked the first thing that had come to my mind.

Hiei turned his gaze away from the window to me. The look he gave me was deadly. "No."

Just by his expression, I could tell that he was lying. "So are you her brother?"

He bestowed a death glare on me. "Hn. No."

"So you are," I responded. "That explains a lot."

"Stupid ningen," he muttered under his breath.

"If I was stupid, then how could I have possibly figured that out?" I inquired calmly, my voice sweet.

"Hn." Hiei turned his head and looked back out the window.

"Obviously you don't want people to know," I stated, easily figuring out why he was being so unresponsive. "Why is that?"

"That is none of your business, baka," Hiei retorted, avoiding the question.

I bristled a little at his tone. "I do hope you know that I am not a baka. A baka would not be able to read your expressions so clearly." My manner stayed calm, although I wasn't particularly thrilled with Hiei's attitude.

"You talk about what you know... you die," he threatened. He seemed to mean what he said, which creeped me out a little.

"Oh, really? What a pleasant way to spend my vacation," I replied a little sarcastically, taking a deep breath. "Perhaps we can reach a truce of some kind. I do not want to feel like I'm on the verge of being killed for the next two weeks. So, if I promise not to tell anyone, will you promise to be a little more pleasant?"

Hiei just glowered at me for a moment, but his eyes flickered with some emotion for the briefest second. "Hn. If I must."

I gave him a curious look, wondering what was going through his head. That one little glimpse of something other than anger had peaked my curiosity.

Unfortunately, Hiei refused to say any more. He was ignoring me, obviously not wanting to talk to me.

I was still bored, and I wanted someone to talk to. Hiei was still the only one I could talk to, as Kaline was still liplocked with Kurama and Botan and Koenma were still talking about demons and such.

Saying a quick prayer, I tried to spark another conversation with him. "Kaline said something about your jagen eye. Could you please explain to me what that is?"

"One of my demon traits," Hiei explained simply, not turning away from the window.

"What do you look like as a demon?" I asked, looking at the back of his head. I wanted him to turn around and look back at me. His red eyes were interesting to watch. "I know that Kaline looks like a kitty-cat, but how do you look?"

"Hn. That is none of your business," he informed me gruffly.

"Do you look any different from the way you do now?" I continued, wanting an answer.

"Yes," Hiei replied. "But I'm not going to tell you anything else."

My mind began to wander again, trying to come up with something that would get him to talk more. "Then perhaps you can tell me what happened between Kaline and Kurama on the yacht last summer?" I wondered, changing tactics. Hiei was not willing to talk about himself, but maybe he would dish out some information on his friends. "Kaline hasn't told me too much, and I know that she's left something important out."

"The fool marked her," Hiei said, which didn't mean a thing to me.

"Um... what do you mean by 'marked'?" I asked, totally lost. He wasn't making any sense at all.

Hiei had to think for a moment before he could reply. "Demon marriage."

"Oh... OH!" I exclaimed, the full implication dawning on me. My best friend was married already, just not by human standards. That was what she was hiding from me. Interesting. I would have to get the full story from her later.

Not willing to talk anymore, I pulled out my portable CD player and put on my headphones. It was time to relax and let everything digest. Of course, I didn't get much time, as I quickly fell asleep.
