Chapter 3: Dinnertime Battles

~~~
When they had seen their mother, Kevin spilled the whole story before Jessica even had a chance to say anything. Strangely it didn't bother her at all. First her dad, and now her mom. Jessica was beginning to think there was something going on that no one was willing to tell them.
Once they were all done, they walked down the same hallway from the night before. Their dad said that he would meet them at the restaurant. Everyone was finally calming down, Roxxane and Jessica talking about something that no one really cared about and Kevin talking to Mom about something on TV. But the moment Jessica turned onto the casino floor she froze. Not fifty feet away was not just Inu Yasha this time; but his brother Sesshoumaru, Kagome, and Koga too. Roxxane and Kevin noticed the same thing and froze beside her. Worse yet was the fact that their dad was talking to them.
“Holy crap, you were right!” Roxxane exclaimed, eyes wide with shock. Kevin couldn't say anything; he was so shocked that he forgot how to speak.
Suddenly a few of them took notice of them. Kevin jumped and hide behind Jessica like she was going to protect him, while Roxxane grabbed onto her sister's arm. As they stood there shocked, their mother strode right passed them to the group of people. “Come you guys, you wanted to eat here for Roxxane's birthday.”
“I think we should go to another restaurant,” Roxxane suggested.
“I totally agree, lets go!” Jessica said as she spun around and started for the exit.
But before she could get too far her mom grabbed her by the arm and dragged her over to the waiting people. The other two, sensing defeat, meekly followed them. Their mother said her hellos to Sesshoumaru and someone named Rin, which was his wife. Wonder if it's to same one from the anime, just all grown up.... but then how did she survive five hundred years? Jessica thought to herself. When they came to a stop Kevin went back behind Jessica and Roxxane stood beside her with a look of pure annoyance written around her face. That and she looked like she was going to slap Inu Yasha for just being there.
“Apologize now,” she said with her teeth clenched to the half-demon that was conveniently looking the other way. And it wasn't even Jessica that had said it, Roxxane was pissed that them being there was going to mess up her post-birthday dinner. When he made no move to say anything Roxxane spun around and asked, “Jessica, he understands English right?”
“Yup... told me to watch where I was going and called me a bitch,” Jessica whispered, trying her best to not stare like a complete idiot.
“Like hell,” he muttered. Sesshoumaru, who had been watching with could only be described as an amused look on his face [which Jessica noted before deciding to turn her attention to the restaurant that wasn't open yet], turned to his `brother' and glared at him. When that didn't work he growled deeply at him, which caused him to flinch. If it wasn't for the hat he was wearing [again], you would have seen his ears flatten themselves against his head. But he turned around all the same and said, “I'm not saying anything, it was her own fault!”
If this had been an anime, Roxxane's form would have been engulfed by flames of rage. Roxxane took two steps forward, it would have been more if Jessica hadn't grabbed the back of her shirt, and grinded out, “Listen here, you're going to say sorry or I'm gonna knock all your teeth out dog-boy!”
“Who you callin' dog-boy!?”
“Please forgive us if we scared you last night miss!” Kagome yelled so that she could be heard over the other too fighting. “And if Koga could speak English, I'm sure he'd be sorry too!”
“Oh please, I doubt that. Anyone would get scared if they were staring at a person you were told isn't real,” Jessica answered as she held her sister in place. She and Inu Yasha were still fighting, but Jessica had tuned it out. “And my name is Jessica, not `miss'.”
The fighting suddenly stopped when Sesshoumaru decided that he had enough of Inu Yasha fighting with someone hundreds of years younger than him, so he grabbed him by the throat and threw him backwards a few feet. None of the people in the area seemed to care. Koga thought the whole thing funny and laughed at the half-breed as he made his way back here. Roxxane was going to continue the argument, but the look on their dad's face and Jessica clamping a hand over her face stopped her.
“You're going to have to forgive Jessica; she's not to good around people she just met,” Her mom said as everyone calmed back down a bit. “Well.... physically anyway.”
“What the hell were you doing in a casino late at night anyway!? Should you have been home doing something girly?” Inu Yasha suddenly asked, not wanting to give up just yet.
“Oh good lord....”
Let me guess.... mutt-face just said something stupid didn't he?”
“OoOoOoh.... Kick his ass Jessica!”
Jessica's eye twitched. She hadn't felt that pissed off since having to move from her home town into the mountains. Slowly she bent over, glaring at him over the top of her glasses. “Lets get one thing straight. I'm sorry you mistake actually brushing my hair as girly. But I am not girly. That is her job,” she said, pointing at her sister. “And I work here. In the gift shop right next to where you crashed into me. So what's your excuse for being here?”
“I don't need one, I'm old enough to be here and not get carded!” Inu Yasha yelled back, not realizing that he was only making it worse.
“I'll be twenty-one in three months! And at least I'm not the one who's nearly a thousand years old!” Jessica shot right back at him.
“Hey! I'm only around seven hundred!”
Sesshoumaru and Kevin sighed. Instead of stopping them like Roxxane before, they walked off, having more important things to discuss. Infact, the arguing only lasted a few moments after the two of them left.
Moments after Inu Yasha and Jessica finished with arguing over age and into the fact that he was a dog, Jessica felt something attach to her leg. Looking down she found that a small child had grabbed onto her leg, their cheek pressed firmly against her calf. When he, and she was pretty sure that it was a he, looked up she saw he had big gold eyes that nearly filled all of his face and silver/white hair. He even had cute little dog ears coming out of his head. Then she noticed that he had identical face markings as Sesshoumaru, the stripes and the crescent moon on his brow. The little boy mumbled something in Japanese into her leg, and even though she didn't know what he said she still thought it sounded cute! Inu Yasha huffed and mumbled something about women when he realized that Jessica had abandoned the argument to stare at Sesshoumaru's kid.
“Ah! I see you've met Yuki,” Rin said, noticing that the fighting had stopped that moment that Yuki had decided to come out from behind her. Again Yuki started talking, half muffled by Jessica's pant leg. When he was finished Rin said, “He said that he's sorry that his uncle made you mad and that you are very pretty.”
“He's adorable!” Roxxane said as she moved over to get a better look at the half-demon child.
“Isn't he?” Kagome said. “But he wont talk to me...” She moved over and tried to say hello, but the little boy only shoved his face into Jessica's leg and said no in Japanese. Koga just snored and mumbled something take Jessica didn't catch [like she ever did...] that caused Kagome to turn around and hit him in the arm, her face red with embarrassment. Inu Yasha was doing his damndist to not turn around and kill him.
“Another one Rin? I thought you were done having kids after the last one,” her mom giggled as she looked down at the boy. “How old is this one?”
“Two, he's still learning to talk, so even if you could understand Japanese you could only understand about half of what he's saying,” she smiled down at her son, who was currently trying to say something to Jessica who had bent over to get a better look at him. “He has all of his father's markings, unlike any of my other children...”
“You're the real Rin aren't you....? The one that traveled with..... Uhhh” Jessica started. She was going to say Sesshoumaru's name but it just didn't seem right yet.
Rin smiled, “Yes that was me. Back when I was a little girl traveling with my lord Sesshoumaru and Ah-Un and Jaken. I'm surprised that you figured that out, most people think that I'm long dead or married to someone else...” Not really knowing how she knew that, Jessica just shrugged. Yuki started purring, or at least what sounded like a purr, a big smile on his face as he reclaimed Jessica's leg. “I'm sorry about Yuki... He's never like this with people that aren't in his family.”
“That's okay, he's cute!”
“So...” Roxxane started as she tried to get the little boy to say something to her, only to have him yell no to her, “How many kids do you have?”
“With him? That's makes thirteen...”
When Sesshoumaru and Kevin had returned to the group Yuki had somehow managed to get Jessica to pick him up so that he sat in her arms. The boy was burbling happily as he gripped her shirt and held his head to her chest to hear her heart beat, his little dog ears twitching with excitement. When Kevin saw the boy he had the same reaction as his wife [but then again so did Sesshoumaru and Rin when they realized that Kevin and Tammy had a son now]. But it was understandable since their last child had been such a problem. Inu Yasha remembered that they had to send their son to another lord for training because the boy wouldn't listen at all and none of the teachers wanted to deal with him. Must have come from our father... he thought as they finally went into the restaurant to eat.
Since the group was such a large size they spilt up into three tables; Sesshoumaru, Rin, Yuki, Kevin, Tammy and himself in a booth, Jessica, Roxxane and Kevin Jr. [the youngest] in the booth cross from them and Koga and Kagome sitting at a table next to theirs. If he tried really hard, he couldn't see them together, but that meant looking at Jessica's table and after their little argument earlier he doubted that she wanted him staring at her.
To tell the truth, he felt a little bad for her.... not for the other reasons he knew but over the fact he could tell she was clearly uncomfortable with all of this. But when talking to a bunch of people that she had been told didn't exist because they were in a comic book, he could understand her acting this way. At least she took it better than I thought....
Jessica was doing her best to make sure that Roxxane was having a good time, since this was her belated birthday dinner [they would have had it earlier, but Jessica had to work on her birthday]. When Rin asked her questions she answered them, but for the most part she tried to keep to herself.
“So.... Do either of you have a boyfriend?” Rin asked. She hadn't seen Jessica since she was two years old and Roxxane wasn't even born yet back then, so she was trying to learn as much about the three of them as humanly possible [which in it self was strange because she was over five hundred years old].
Jessica, upon hearing Rin's question, inhaled part of her dinner, causing her to choke. When Roxxane got her sister to stop hacking up her lungs she decided to answer Rin's question. “Well, as for me, I'm on a dating break. Guys up here are really retarded.” When Jessica declined to comment at all, Roxxane continued, “Jessica here doesn't have a boyfriend.... at this time...”
“Oh....? Meaning...?” Kagome began asking before Jessica interrupted.
“I don't date. Ever.” Jessica said, staring into her drink. “Me and people don't get along.”
As if sensing how she felt, Rin smiled and answered, “Oh, I'm sure it's just like your sister said that they're just stupid up here. Just wait, I'm sure that someone will come along.”
Jessica looked over at Rin and nodded, noticing that Sesshoumaru had a strange smug look on his face before turning back to Roxxane when she kept poking her. Looking down she saw that she had written her a note on a tiny note book she kept in her purse.
What's wrong with this picture? The note read.
Confused, Jessica grabbed the pen from her and wrote back, What are you talking about?! Everything is wrong with this!!!!
Roxxane huffed, sneaking a look over to the `adults' before scribbling, No I mean, there's something wrong with The dog-boy and the other chick....
You mean Inu Yasha and Kagome?
Yeah!!! What's wrong there and who's the dude with her?! Roxxane made her point, there was something wrong. And she had a really good idea what.
The two of them were an item.... 500 years ago.... my guess is that she dumped him for the other guy, Koga. Don't know why though. When she noticed that people had started looking over at them, wondering what they were doing, Jessica did the first thing she could think of.
“What are you two doing over there?” their mom asked.
Roxxane looked over at what Jessica had done and started to giggle, “Um, nothing...” Kevin, who had spent most of the time talking about ninjas and anime with Rin when she wasn't trying to get Jessica and Roxxane to say something, looked over as Jessica finished what she was doing and laughed out loud. Before Jessica could stop him, Kevin grabbed the notebook and threw it over to their parents to look at.
On the page, instead of Jessica and Roxxane's conversation, was a drawing of Jessica standing over Inu Yasha who was unconscious on the ground from a blow to the head by a war hammer. In the picture Jessica was looking into a cookbook that read How to Cook Different Animals. The thought bubble in the picture read, “I wonder if it counts that he's only half dog?”
Everyone began laughing at the picture, except for Inu Yasha and Koga. Taking the picture Sesshoumaru commented, “I doubt even if your father cooked him, he'd still come out tasting horrible.”
“How cute!” Kagome exclaimed.
“I like this! Draw me something!” Rin giggled. Yuki burbled something happily, “He says he likes it too!” Rin translated.
Koga mumbled something in Japanese before downing the contents of his glass. Whatever he said pissed off both Rin and Kagome and earned a glare from both of the brothers.
“What did he say?” Roxxane demanded, she knew it had something to do with her sister.
“The wolf states that Americans have no place drawing anime,” Sesshoumaru said coldly. Jessica, who was happy about the praise, slumped slightly. “But he wouldn't know good art if it bite him in the ass.”
“You shouldn't listen to him, he doesn't even watch anime!” Kagome tried to sound reassuring, but it was too late to make her feel any better.
Inu Yasha somehow managed to take the picture from his brother and looked at the ink drawing in his hand. He snorted at the picture before saying, “This would be okay, if you weren't trying to cook me....”
Rin perked up, “See! Even Inu Yasha likes it, and he should know since he owns a very popular video game company back home!”
“Really? Which one?” Kevin asked.
“Square Enix.”
Once the dinner finished and they got over the shock of the new light on Inu Yasha, everyone went into Starbucks for an after dinner coffee. Jessica's mood didn't improve. Infact, she didn't say anything else the whole night. Even though Rin managed to force her to give her website address so she could see the rest of her work, she didn't really say anything. Not good. You never fuck with an artist's work; even Inu Yasha knew that, he worked with them almost every day.
Jessica spaced out most of the conversation, but it was mostly `nice to see you again' and stuff like that. It wasn't until Rin started talking about how long they were staying there did she join in.
“We should be here a few months so we'll have to do this again,” Rin said, practically clinging to Sesshoumaru's arm that Jessica still hadn't figured out how he'd gotten it back. Little Yuki was carefully balanced on her hip with the grace of someone who had raised many children.
“Months? I figured that this was some kind-of vacation for you guys,” Roxxane asked, she was hoping that they'd be gone in a few days and left them to their normal lives again.
Inu Yasha looked away quickly at the question, but Sesshoumaru wasn't bothered by it. “We were asked to handle something in this area, but it seems that the person isn't here yet.”
“Oh great. More demons...” Jessica mumbled under her breath.
“If it were only. The being we are after isn't any demon, nor half breed,” Sesshoumaru replied.
“Then what is it?” Kevin asked, curious of what was going on.
“Something worse...” Something passed over both of the faces of the dog brothers, making Jessica wonder what they were hiding. But so long as it didn't have to do with Naraku or anything like that she didn't care. She could deal with a bunch of cartoon characters for a few months. Maybe....
Once everyone was gone and they had returned home Roxxane and Jessica sat in their room, talking about the strange night. Most of what she was saying had something to do with why their dad knew them in the first place [he explained to them once they got home] and questions on why demons were such assholes.
After Roxxane was fast asleep in their room Jessica sat down stairs watching TV, just like every night until about 2am. But mostly she sat thinking about what the wolf had said about her drawing. Then when Adultswim started playing the next Inu Yasha episode, Jessica grabbed the remote and shut the TV off, her mind made up on what she was going to do next.
