Chapter 4: Halloween Parties

~~~
A few days passed after the dinner with Inu Yasha and all them, nothing really happened during those peaceful days. Those would be the last ones Jessica would get in the coming months. It seemed that a dark cloud was hovering ever closer to her ever since she made up her mind about some subjects that she really didn't want to think about, the days were longer without so much to do. But mostly she was bored. And just a little bit depressed.
Roxxane looked over at her sister as she moved thing into a big trunk. Wondering what she was doing, she got up from her bed, she was watching Life As We Know It again, and took a look at what she was doing. It was then that she realized that Jessica was placing her comic books into the trunk. “Dude, what are doing?!”
Jessica jumped; she had been too busy thinking to notice Roxxane come up behind her. Quickly thinking, she answered, “Making room... There's way too many sitting here and I thought that I should pack them up.”
Roxxane glared down at Jessica, she knew she was lying because Jessica was a terrible liar. But if she wanted to pack up her books that was okay with her, she hated anime anyway no matter how it looked. “Okay, just make sure you clean up before you leave for work.”
Jessica shook her head and continued to put books into the trunk. If Roxxane had known what was at the bottom of the trunk she would have been pissed, but about 20 graphic novels covered the bottom so she couldn't see what was there. Or the padlock at her feet.
The weekend came again and Jessica was still tired when she woke-up Sunday morning, but that was normal when two people call in sick and you're stuck working 12 hour shifts. The phone ringing was what woke her up in the first place, so she wasn't really in a good mood. After flopping down on the couch her mom came up to her with this big grin on her face that meant trouble.
“You'll never guess who called just now,” She said, a strange look in her eye as she looked at Jessica. Jessica only grunted in response, it was too early for her to deal was this [even if was noon]. “It was Rin. It seems that they're throwing a Halloween and they want us to come!”
“What?” was all Jessica could get out, she was still half asleep and trying to understand what she was being told.
“Rin said that they're having a big Halloween party and she really want us to come, to make up for the fact they scared the hell outta you... or something like that. Yuki keep trying to get the phone from her because he thought he could talk to you, so it was a little hard to understand....” Her mother was completely unfazed by all this; it was as if she was turning against her!
Jessica, finally awake and sitting up, stuttered out, “B-but I don't have a costume! And why would I want to spend the first holiday off this year with a bunch of demons and people I don't know!?”
“We're all going Jessica, and that includes your dad too. So you'll have to deal with it.” Tammy sighed as she sat down next to her and tried to think of a way to get Jessica to come along without any problems. “I know it'll be hard because of that cartoon and everything, but once you get passed that things should get better. They're here for a few months so you'll have to get over it sooner or later.” When Jessica didn't say anything she continued, “Besides, Rin said that one of their sons was coming and she wanted to introduce him to you.”
Jessica sighed and put her head between her hands, “So I'll be around people I don't know and Rin's trying to set me up with someone. This'll be great....”
Tammy clapped her hands together and laughed in victory as she felt Jessica give up. “Good! Now, about the costumes. Rin and Kagome both don't have any yet so you and you brother and sister will be going with them to get costumes on Tuesday.”
Jessica could only grumble as she flopped down on the couch in defeat. “Mom.... how is Rin over five hundred years old and looks like she's barely old than me?” The thought had been bothering her for a few days, but she didn't really talk about it.
“I asked Rin that once right before we moved to Rhode Island when you were still a baby and she said that it involved her drinking some of her husband's blood during sex or something like that.”
Inu Yasha yawned loudly as he made his way to his brother's makeshift office. He had wanted to sleep in after the beating Sesshoumaru gave him yesterday during their spar, but it seemed that he had other plans. Apparently they thought it would be a good idea to send Yuki in to wake him up, since he tended to attack everyone that tried to, but when the little boy couldn't wake him up by poking him he resorted to biting his arm. He jumped up when he felt that, but when Yuki realized that he was awake he giggled and ran out the room. When he chased the little brat out the door he almost ran into Rin, who smiled and told him that Sesshoumaru wanted to see him.
This was not how I wanted to start my day, he thought as he came to the doors leading to the study. Not bothering to knock or announce his presence first, Inu Yasha merely slammed open the doors and closed them behind him as he strode up to the desk at the back of the room. Sesshoumaru didn't even look up at all the noise; he just continued working on his computer like he wasn't even there. When he realized that he was being ignored, Inu Yasha huffed out, “What the hell did you wake me up so early to tell me!?”
Not taking his eyes off the screen, Sesshoumaru only replied, “Keep it down.... there are those that are still sleeping in this household.”
Damnit you bastard, I don't have time for these games! What the hell was so important!?” Inu Yasha was in a bad mood, it was plain as day on his face.
Things should have been a little better by now, but the wolf seemed to enjoy rubbing the fact that he had won Kagome in Inu Yasha's face. It didn't matter to Sesshoumaru though, he had never approved of Inu Yasha being with her in the first place. Priestess of the jewel of the four souls, but other than that she wasn't strong enough for a member of his pack, half-breed or not. Sesshoumaru looked over at his half-brother; pain clearly etched on his face, and mentally sighed. “I got a call earlier. It seems that he is already in the country.”
Shock knocked the anger from him, “Already?! But I thought that he was still somewhere back home!”
He was, but it seems that he's moving faster than before....” Sesshoumaru wasn't sure how, but he wasn't about to tell him that.
Where is he?” Inu Yasha was ready to go kick his ass and get it over with, but as always things never work out as they plan.
In San Francisco. But you will not be coming.”
What!?” He couldn't believe his ears; Sesshoumaru had no right telling him he couldn't since it was his ass that forced into this in the first place.
Sesshoumaru sat silently and waited for Inu Yasha to calm down before continuing. “I will leave after the party tomorrow, I need you to stay here and guard her while I'm away.” When Inu Yasha opened his mouth to argue with him he continued, “ If we both leave then there will be no one to look after her while we fight him and who's to say that he doesn't send someone here to kidnap her while we're dealing with him?”
Inu Yasha snorted, “By the time you leave, can't you just leave Chiaki to watch her? I'm sure the others would help too if they knew what was going on...”
Now it was time for Sesshoumaru to snort at his brother's ignorance. Looking up at him Sesshoumaru retorted, “He may be my son, but I would not trust him with something so important.” Looking back to the computer screen he continued, “As for telling the priestess, that is out of the question. The moment she knew she'd crack and tell her before she needed to know.”
Damn.... he's got me there... Inu Yasha silently agreed. Kagome had a habit of spilling secrets, even though the girl should have known by now but he could understand her parents' choice. That and it was partly his fault anyway. Instead of continuing the argument he gave up, in the end Sesshoumaru would have his way anyway. “Fine. But don't get your ass killed, I'm not doing all the crap you do, I have a life outside of the Western lands!”
Tammy was at work when she got a call from Rin on Tuesday. The kids were with Rin and Kagome to get costumes for the Halloween party later that night. She really didn't think anything could go wrong with that, but she greatly underestimated that.
“Hello Tammy~!” Rin cried happily into the phone.
Tammy was already suspicious of Rin and she hadn't really said anything yet. Sighing she answered, “Hi Rin. I hope everything's going okay....” Tammy could hear struggling in the background as she spoke to Rin.
Rin giggled, “Oh yes everything's fine! I called to ask you a question...”
“Mom don't listen to her!!!” Jessica cried from somewhere over the phone.
Oh boy.... Tammy thought. “Okay, what's the question?”
Again Rin giggled as she continued, “Well, I found the perfect costume for Jessica, but her hair color is all wrong for it. We tried wigs but the just don't look right on her.... So I was wondering if I could cut it to match the style and dye it blonde....”
No wonder Jessica was trying to stop her..... Jessica hated people touching her hair, and the thought of dying it must have her panicking. But once Rin got an idea there was no way to stop her. Sighing again she answered, “Sure Rin, just make sure they don't cut too much off....”
Rin laughed out in victory, thanking her all the while as Tammy wondered if she had made a mistake. But it was too late now, so she'll just have to hope that all of it would work out.
The party was just getting good when Inu Yasha finally walked in. Everybody was dressed up in costumes and dancing around having a good time while he really didn't want to be there.
Just like every year he was dressed up as himself, it was the only time of the year he could wear his old outfit out in public without people looking at him like he was crazy. Not that it really bothered him, but it gets old really fast. Inu Yasha wasn't the only one dressed up as themselves; Sesshoumaru, Koga and Kagome were in they're old clothes too. Rin and Tammy were dressed in the many layered kimono's that castle ladies used to wear when feudal lords still ruled Japan, Kevin was dressed as a wandering samurai, and he'd bet good money that the sword at his side was real too.
Inu Yasha realized that he couldn't see of the Miller kids or Sesshoumaru's kids either. He weaved through the knot of witches, demons and random anime characters to get to the area where everyone was at.
“I see you dragged yourself out of where ever you've been hiding...” Sesshoumaru snickered.
Inu Yasha huffed, “Yeah well, you're still missing five people here.”
Rin perked up and giggled like a high school girl. “Jessica, Roxxane and little Kevin are finishing up with their costumes. Yuki is with them and as for Chiaki.....” Rin trailed off, her son was a problem from the time he started walking so it was no surprise that he wasn't there yet.
But all was well and good because the kids [all but Chiaki] chose that moment to make there way through the crowd.
~~~

Jessica never felt so uncomfortable in her entire life. At least Roxxane was only dressed as Aeris [Kingdom Hearts version with the odd name] and the only reason that happened was because she got to wear a bright pink dress and Kevin was Sora because well.... Kevin really wanted to dress as him anyway [he would have been Roxas but Roxxane kept saying that he was trying to steal her name]. But she wasn't too thrilled about what she got saddled into wearing.

For some reason Rin thought it would be a good idea that she should dress up as First Lieutenant Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist. But Jessica's hair is chestnut brown and all one length, unlike Hawkeye's which is blonde and has bangs that cover one side of her face. That was why Rin called her mom to see if it was okay to dye her hair, which she agreed to. So, gone was her old hair along with her glasses and in its place was a blonde head of hair that was pulled back behind her head. If Rin had had more time she would have had Jessica outfitted with brown contacts to complete the look, but thank god there wasn't, by the time they were finished it was almost time for the party.

So, here she was in a room full of people wearing a blue military uniform [if this had been a week ago she would have been really happy about it] with Yuki clinging to her leg in a puppy costume, wondering when the damn thing was going to end. Not to mention Rin still wanted her to meet her second youngest son, another thing she could really do without.

“Dude.... is that guy wearing a fur skirt?” Roxxane asked pointing at Koga.

Jessica looked over at where she was pointing. “Yup, it's the fur skirt.” Jessica could help but snicker at her sister's name for the thing that Koga wore. She wasn't sure what it was really called but `fur skirt' sounded good.

“Why? Doesn't he know that it's a fashion suicide to wear something like that unless you're from Ireland or Scotland or somewhere like that? And what the hell is that fluffy thing on the dude with the Sailor Moon thing on his head anyway!?”

“Okay, the fluffy thing is something his father wore nearly a thousand years ago; please don't say anything about it. But Koga and his fur skirt are fair game, okay?” Jessica replied quickly as they got to their parents. All three of them were giggling when they reached the group, mostly due to Roxxane saying some things about Koga's fur skirt.

The moment they reached them Yuki jumped out from behind her and launched himself at his mother. Apparently he was really happy about being a puppy for Halloween, because he kept telling Rin that over and over again. At least she thought that was what he was saying.

Inu Yasha looked around at the three of them and turned to Roxxane, asking “Where's your sister?”

Roxxane and Kevin looked at each other in disbelief. Jessica on the other hand was doing her best not to smack him, because he really meant what he asked. The worst was that everyone else was snickering about it. She understood that they were in a room full of people and he probably couldn't smell her, but still! Taking a deep breathe, Jessica barked out, “I'm right here, you moron!”

Inu Yasha stared at her a moment before it dawned on him like a smack in the head. “What the hell happened to your hair?”

While Jessica did her best not to launch herself at the retarded dog Rin spoke up in her defense, since it was her fault in a way, “Jessica couldn't decide on a costume so I decided that she should dress as Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist, and since her hair didn't match I thought she should dye it!”

Sesshoumaru looked over at her and gave her this weird look of consideration and said, “She did the same thing to Inu Yasha about fifty years ago when hair dye first came to Japan. He had pink hair for almost six months.”

Inu Yasha suddenly yelled out at his brother, “You said you wouldn't tell anyone that!”

“Oh yeah, Rin showed me a picture of that a few years ago. It was black and white, but you could tell it wasn't his white hair,” Kagome giggled. Remembering something she continued, “Now that I remember, his hair was cut to his shoulders and was sticking out everywhere.”

“How did you manage that?” Jessica's mother asked, laughing lightly into the fan in her hand.

“Demonic rope. I had him tied to a chair so he couldn't move,” Rin replied with a big smile on her face.

Jessica imagined what he'd look like with pink hair and ended up laughing slightly under her breathe. The light atmosphere was soon replaced when someone approached the group. It wasn't until Yuki yelled out “Big brother!” [One of the few things she understands in Japanese] did she realize that it was the son she was supposed to meet.

Chiaki was about the same height as his father with the same magenta strips on his face, but that was where the similarities ended. The guy was dressed up in skin tight black pants with at least six belts on them. The equally black shirt he wore was tore in places and had some weird emo symbol on the front. His ears [which looked human from where she stood] were pierced in at least five places on each ear and he was wearing a spiked choker. What would have been beautiful white hair was hacked short and spiked everywhere and had it covering one gold eye. He looked like a poster boy for an emo band.

Father, mother,” he spoke coldly as he surveyed the group. As an after thought he added, “Mutt.”

Inu Yasha growled at the other half-breed, Jessica only wondered why he would call him that when they were both only half demons [anyone that reads fan fictions knows what mutt is in Japanese...]. So instead of keeping her mouth shut she asked, “Like you're one to talk.”

“What are you supposed to be?” Roxxane asked, thinking that he dressed like someone she knew.

“Those are his normal clothes....” Rin answered, slightly strained as Chiaki turned to Jessica and gave her a cold stare.

“Keep your comments to yourself human,” Chiaki said his voice dangerously low.

Jessica snorted and brushed her hair out her face. “Oh dear, I'm in trouble now. I upset the Emo pretty boy.... What are you gonna do, sing me a song about how much the world sucks?”

Chiaki let out a menacing growl, flexing his claws as he took a step forward. Jessica didn't do anything but raise an eyebrow as he made to attack her, but Chiaki didn't get far. The moment he tried to attack her Sesshoumaru was in front of him, growling deeply at he's troublesome son.

Trying to lighten the mood, yet again, Rin turned to her son and chimed out, “Chiaki, This is Kevin's oldest, Jessica! Since we're staying here for awhile I thought you two could be friends!”

Jessica snorted at the idea, “I'm sorry, but I'd rather rip my tongue out than be around him.”

“Do you get into fights with everyone you meet?” Inu Yasha asked, completely serious for a change.

“Only with assholes...” she answered only to be smacked in the back of the head by her mother. “And for your information I didn't get into any fights with Rin or Kagome thank you very much.”

“Wow, this party has everything; angry Emo boys and dudes in fur skirts,” Roxxane commented out loud.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at Roxxane then at Koga, who was blissfully unaware that she had made fun of him. Suddenly everyone started laughing, even Chiaki; Inu Yasha ended up falling on the floor from laughing so hard after telling Koga what Roxxane had said about him. He wasn't too happy about it.

With things calmed greatly the party continued without any problems. That is, if you didn't count Jessica knocking Chiaki out for grabbing her ass right before the party ended [Sesshoumaru said he was drunk at the time, but no one believed him].

A Few Days Later

Another long shift for Jessica, walking home at 1:30 am always felt longer than walking to work. Or maybe it was everyone at work asking her why she walked home when it was so scary? It wasn't like there were tons of people that walked late at night, maybe a few drunks and people on their way to work, and it wasn't anything like back home in the Bay Area. Plus, the road only went in one direction, it's a highway, and the sidewalk is only on one side [and there's a golf course right next to the sidewalk....]. So when Jessica heard something following her in the shadows of trees beside her, it didn't take much thinking to realize who was following her. Taking the hamster bag [it's yellow and has the Hamtaro hamsters on it] in her hand, which was full of books she read at work, she threw the thing towards the sounds of rustling. There was a thick smack followed by angry cursing. Jessica sighed and stopped, waiting for the person to come out of hiding.

Slightly miffed, Inu Yasha jumped out and landed on the fence next to Jessica, clutching her bag while rubbing his face. “If you knew I was there, why'd you throw this at me?”

“Because, you've been following me for three days, and I'm kind-of tired of it. Now explain to me why you've been following me,” It was late and Jessica was not in the mood for some moody cartoon character. Instead of answering her, Inu Yasha fidgeted around, looking guilty. There was something strange about watching him think of an excuse, maybe it was the fact that he was wearing normal clothes.... or maybe it was the sight of him actually wearing shoes.... Sighing again, which she was doing a lot lately, Jessica answered her own question, “This has something to do with me, doesn't it?”

Inu Yasha's ears perked up at her answer, telling her she got it right. Huffing in defeat, Inu Yasha jumped down from his perch and handed Jessica back her bag before answering, “Yeah, sort-of.”

Sighing [again], Jessica gladly took back her bag, eyes down cast at the thought of something coming after her. “Why didn't you guys just come out and tell me this? And why is this thing after me?” Jessica pushed her still blonde hair out of her face and continued down the road to home.

Following after her, Inu Yasha huffed slightly, “Hey, it's not that we don't think you could handle it, we down think you'd believe us if we told you. Hell, sometimes I don't believe it.”

Jessica looked over at the half demon, whose arms were behind his head as he looked up at the sky, and asked, “Why wouldn't I believe it? I have to deal with you and that's pretty unbelievable.”

Now it was his turn to sigh, “Trust me, this would change the way you think about.... well everything. Sesshoumaru went to see if he couldn't deal with it.... but I don't think it'll help much.”

“So basically, whatever coming after me is close and you don't think your brother can deal with it....” Think a moment, Jessica continued, “Is it really that bad?” They dealt with Naraku; if this was worse than that, then they could all be screwed.

Staring hard at the sky he answered, “This is worse than anything we've been up against... even Naraku is nothing compared to this guy.”

A few moments of silence passed as the walked passed the quiet homes. “You never told me why this has to do with me....”

“Another thing that'll have to wait.”

Another moment of silence. “Am I the only one that doesn't know?”

“No, it's only me, Sesshoumaru, Rin and your parents. And I don't think Rin knows the whole story yet.” Suddenly He laughed out, causing Jessica to jump a bit, “Hell, neither Kagome nor Koga have figured out what's going on! Every time Sesshoumaru mentions something about it, Kagome demands to know what's going on, but he never says anything. So you know more than they do right now.”

“Well, I guess it could be worse....”

Finally they reached Jessica's house, the dark shape looming over them. Jessica was about to climb the stairs when Inu Yasha suddenly said, “You know, most people would have asked about Kagome and me by now...”

Standing where she stopped on the first stair, Jessica stood there looking at him while he did his best not to look at her. “I thought it would be rude to pry into your personal life. You might be in a cartoon, but you have your own life too.” Inu Yasha looked at her like she had grown a second head; he wasn't expecting her to say something like that. “But,” she continued, “if you want to talk to someone that isn't going to smack you upside your head and call you weak, then I guess you can tell me. I have to get some things tomorrow, so since you have to follow me everywhere, you can tell me then. Okay?”

Inu Yasha thought for a moment, but answered, “Sure. About noon?”

“Kay. See you then, Inu Yasha,” She answered just as she stepped into her house and out of sight.

Amazed that she used his name, Inu Yasha started back for his home so he could get some sleep before baring his heart to someone. Little did he know, the problem had already arrived and was waiting silently for the time to strike.

Sorry it took forever to finish this chapter, but when people quit everything stops. It's not fun..... Hopefully the next chapter will finish quicker. Till then.... well I hope this is enough. Thanks for the page views, Please Review though too [just don't flame, cause no matter what, I'm not changing the story].
