Chapter 11: And Then There Was Some
~~~
~...~ means on the TV
~~~
Days and weeks passed.
Everything passed by like a blur for Jessica. Everyday it was training first thing in the morning until Roxxane and Kevin got out of school. Then she would go home and play video games with Inu Yasha until her parents got home, since no one wanted to take chances. Which was fine with her. After spending so much time together it was decided (by Rin) that they were friends. That was fine with them, Jessica didn't have any friends in Tahoe and Inu Yasha needed someone to talk to that wasn't Kagome and wasn't going to go to Sesshoumaru with everything he said. Plus, Chiaki went back to Japan so things were a little quieter.
Time moves on and like all things, evil continues to plot.
~~~
Everything was dark.
But that was to be expected since he was hiding in a basement. Who ever was upstairs was trashing the place, looking for him. He was scared and alone and he wanted was his parents to come home. Then everything would be okay.
The babysitter was dead; he saw them kill her with a huge sword when she wouldn't tell them where he was. The blood was everywhere; it was nothing like the horror movies that his mom and dad let him watch sometimes. The blood was darker, thicker, and when Stacy fell all you could see was her wide soulless eyes.
All he had to do was wait. Then everything would be okay.
Michael froze. Someone was coming down the stairs. He didn't dare to breathe, only hoped that they couldn't see him behind all the boxes. There was three of them, wearing black outfits with blue lights on them. He knew who they were. But they couldn't be real, they were just a game! At the bottom of the stairs one stopped, sniffing the air. He tried to move farther away, but it was too late. In a moment they had him and it was all over.
~~~
Sephiroth watched as they pulled the child from the house they were outside of. At least this one had sense not to scream like the others, thought he did struggle with strength an eight year old child shouldn't have. But like the others before him this child was Centra, though he did not know it. None of them did since this world didn't believe in such things and had long ago cast off the ability to hear the planet to survive.
They brought the boy to the truck they were transporting the captured in, the man in the front seat got out to take a look at him. Sephiroth was already back there when the man walked up, clutching the device in his hand harder. When most people saw him they stopped fighting as this boy did; either began praying to an uncaring or non-existent god for help or passed out completely. It seemed many Centra had played the damn game that warned them of him; while it was annoying as hell it did have its advantages.
A needle was stuck into the boy's arm, taking a bit of blood. The man carrying the device shoved the needle in, testing it for Centra blood. Sephiroth knew it was a waste of time since he hadn't been wrong about any of them yet. The machine beeped and displayed the results on the screen, the man holding it cackling with glee.
"Amazing! All of them have higher amounts of Centra blood in them then both Ifla and Aeris combined!" he laughed, incredibly happy about it. "Throw him in with the others!"
"Yes Professor Hojo...." they said, turning to put the boy into the truck. The boy began struggling as the chucked him in back. The others began their cries again, the young ones for parents and the older ones with threat of cops and retribution. Sephiroth laughed darkly and walked away, such threats meaningless against him.
Hojo followed him, still more questions to ask him. "And you're sure that Jay is on this world?" Jay was no failed experiment, but she had been an infant and weak from the injections the last he saw her over twenty years ago, so he was unsure that Sephiroth was correct or not.
"It was her... The woman keeping her confessed and all three men are living in the town I left her at. Though I would suggest you don't call her that. She's quite touché about being called anything else..." Sephiroth said, looked off in the distance as he attempted to reach Jessica’s thoughts. But no such luck.
Hojo stood silent, remembering Lucrecia's temper and wonder if she had somehow inherited it from her mother. Shaking the thought off he followed Sephiroth and hoped back in the truck. So many other Centra to find....
~~~
Jessica sat in the living room, attempting to eat her breakfast and feed Jay at the same time which was pretty hard. Everyone was getting ready to leave to school or work or in Jessica's case to have her ass handed to her once again. She was better than went she started, having moved from wooden swords to real ones after about a month. Kagome was still having some problems considering she spent over ten years using a bow. Jessica, on the other hand, was having no problems learning to kick ass. I knew all those video games would come in handy one day...
Her mom grabbed all the plates and took them into the kitchen while they continued to watch the channel 2 news, since it was Bay Area news it was better news.
~"Breaking news, everyone. Reports are coming from around the country of mass kidnapping by one group... One moment... I think we have a video...."~
Everyone stopped. Something like that did not sound right with all that was going on right now. Tammy walked back out, hands on a phone should she need to use it. And she was sure she was going to need to.
~The news switch over to a grainy shot of an empty street at night, only huge truck sitting in the middle of the street. The person had to be hidden in an alley because when shouts and crying came from off screen all the camera did was look towards the wall in the direction of the cries. A group of people wearing black and glowing blue dragged three people, two of which couldn't be over ten years old, over to the truck and held them still despite the yelling. Someone else walked on screen, all dressed in black, towards the truck and said something to low for the camera to pick up. The cameraman moved down as the man look over in his direction, but he looked away and the camera zoomed in to his face. ~
Jessica dropped the cup she had been holding, the coffee spilt all over the floor. The new person started talking again at this point, but she didn't hear him. It was Sephiroth on the TV. And he was kidnapping people. What the hell was he doing that for!?
~Sephiroth turned and began talking to someone behind him, the camera zoomed out a little bit to show the man next to him. ~
She dropped to the ground as the man began to laugh like an entire bucket of madness was dumped on him.
"I thought you said Hojo was dead!?" Kevin asked, staring at the screen like it was going to do a trick.
"Thought... thought he was dead," Jessica muttered as she watched the video play out. "At the beginning of Cerberus they show him... disappeared right before they could see if he was dead or not..."
~The anchor man came back on screen, his expression grave. “Over a two hundred people have gone missing in this week alone, the latest being a nine year old named Michael Forbae. His babysitter, Stacy Green, was found dead at the scene. Eye witnesses have seen the man in this video all over the state and neighboring Nevada while others have been seen all over the country and may have been involved in a casino attack up in the Tahoe area…”~
And that’s when Jessica finally broke.
~~~
Inu Yasha walked up the steps of the Miller home, wondering what was taking them so long. They were ten minutes late, and they were never late by more than a minute or so. He could hear the TV from the other side of the door, so they had to still be in the house. He knocked, wondering what he was going to tell Sesshoumaru on why they were late. Kevin slowly opened the door, pale as a ghost.
“Inu Yasha it’s you!” he said as he grabbed his arm and pulled him into the house.
Entering the house he noticed that Tammy was still there, having supposed to be at work a half an hour ago, talking on the phone. And that Jessica was nowhere to be seen.
“What goin’? And where’s you sister?” he asked, wondering what the hell was going on.
Kevin began to point at the screen franticly yelling, “Sephiroth was on the news and he’s kidnapping people and Hojo’s alive and helping and Jessica’supstairsfreakingout!” Inu Yasha stared at the boy for a moment, amazed that he got the last part out all in one breathe. When it seemed that he didn’t understand him, Kevin grabbed his arm again and pointed at the TV. “Just watch.”
The news report played once again as it had for the last forty-five minutes, leaving Inu Yasha completely shocked. “Where’s Jessica?”
“Upstairs,” Kevin answered, annoyed that he hadn’t listened to him the first time.
“Roxxane came back from school and is trying to get her to calm down but it’s not working to well…” Tammy said, finally off the phone with her husband. She didn’t have a chance to say anything else, Inu Yasha was up the stairs before she could warn him that Jessica had locked herself in the bathroom.
~~~
After finding out that her family was kidnapping people for god knows what, the only thing Jessica wanted to do was hide. And hide she did. By the time Roxxane came back home Jessica had managed to lock the door to the bathroom in their room and sat on the floor in the shower stall with Jay wrapped around her, crying. She didn’t want anyone else to see her like that, she hated crying.
She could hear more voices outside the door now, talking too quietly for her to hear. Someone knocked on the door, asking her to unlock the door but Jessica ignored them. For a few moments someone outside fiddled with the knob on the door but gave up.
Something dropped to the ground with a loud thud, but Jessica didn’t care. It wasn’t until Roxxane opened the shower and hugged her, telling her it wasn’t her fault, did she really begin to let go.
~~~
Inu Yasha did his best to keep Jessica from looking at a TV at all since she was finally have the break down he thought she was going to go through weeks ago. How she managed to hold it off for so long was beyond him. Once he 'removed' the doorknob Roxxane calmed her down a bit, not by much but enough to stop her from crying. But then the latest report came on before he could stop her and now things were worse than ever.
Sesshoumaru was pissed. No, not just pissed. He was having freaking kittens at this point. Someone released the video with the battle with Sephiroth on it. Everyone's faces were all over the news now. Nothing bad since they had people who were there give testimony that they had gone in there to save Jessica's mom, but now the world knew that it was really Sephiroth... and that Jessica was his sister (or that he was just a crazy bastard, which was true). Damn the fact that the casino had audio. The entire conversation was TV... Apparently they had tested the tape for tampering or CG affects but when they had found none and then the kidnappings had reached national news. Then CNN decided to put in on the air. What they were going to do to explain all this he had no idea but that wasn't the problem right now.
At least he didn't care that we weren't coming to training, Inu Yasha thought as he dragged Jessica out of her house and down the street.
"Damnit Inu Yasha, let go of me!" Jessica yelled. She wasn't crying (again) anymore, thank god, but she didn't think going outside was the smartest thing right now. Behind them Roxxane and Kevin followed, though a little more quietly than their sister.
"Not a chance woman, I'm taking you away from that gods cursed TV," he replied, ignoring her frustrated cries.
~~~
In the end they had gone bowling, but the whole trip down to the alley people had stared at them. It seemed that Jessica was right to think that many people had watched the news report, good thing they couldn't figure out if it was her or not. But in the end she did have fun and forgot about things. For a time, anyway. The next day they were back to training, but now it was worse than ever.
~~~
A week later:
Everyone was flat on their backs (or in Koga's case, on his face). The last week had been the hardest week since they had started. Instead of going home at two she wasn't leaving until eight o'clock at night. Jessica had no strength left to move, everything hurt. Plus she was sure that she was bleeding in a few places so that wasn't improving her mood at all.
Kagome groaned and tried sitting up, but flopped back down on the second try. Somewhere off to the side she could hear Koga cursing into the floor, something about Sesshoumaru having all his sons turned on him. Inu Yasha dropped down beside her, breathing hard. Jessica closer her eyes for a moment, hoping that maybe she drop dead from the workout.
"Get up," Sesshoumaru growled. When no one moved he bark, "Now!"
"Give her a break Sesshoumaru, she's tired. She's still human damnit, you can't expect her to keep training like this," Inu Yasha barked back.
Jessica could feel Sesshoumaru standing in front of her. She was so tired. Tired of training, tired of Sesshoumaru yelling at her, tired of people around town staring at her when she finally got sometime to go out. She was tired of this. There was too much going on, too many depending on her now.
She stood up, her legs shaking in the effort, at looked the demon straight in the eyes. He started back, for a moment wondering if it was Sephiroth in there or not. But it wasn't so, Jessica was only pushed well passed her breaking point. She reached down and grabbed her fallen sword, then Kagome's. With one pointed towards him and the other laying against her leg she readied herself.
Sesshoumaru sensed a change in Jessica, and not a good one, but took up his stance anyway. He could see she was angry, but this was the only way for her to learn. Jessica took a deep breathe and bolted at the demon.
It was all over in seconds. When she ran at Sesshoumaru he swiftly moved behind her to attack. Then suddenly Jessica was out the door before anyone could stop her, not that anyone made a move.
Kagome's sword was imbedded in the floor though Sesshoumaru's pant leg, still shaking from the force of Jessica throwing it. Sesshoumaru's own sword was in the ceiling. Jessica in her state of unrest she managed to knock the blade from his hand.
Sesshoumaru pulled the sword from the floor and flung it aside, bending down in front of him. Inu Yasha began ranting to him, but he paid no mind. Holding up what he found he turned to face the others.
Inu Yasha stopped talking at the sight. In Sesshoumaru’s hand was a single white feather, along with several others at his feet.
~~~
..."Everyone will take a day to rest then we will resume training"... Like anyone's gonna come back after that... Inu Yasha thought. As he walked down the hall he wondered what had happened to Jessica's own sword, they never found it and Rin didn't say that she had seen her leave. He shook the thought off and continued down the hall and towards the forest. At least there he could hide out there until he figured out a way to get out of training with his brother.
His phone went off just as he got ready to make a break for it. Pulling the phone from his robes and looked down. It was Jessica's house calling. He flipped the phone and answered the call (thanking the person that invented speaker phone on a cell phone).
"What the hell did Mister Fluffy pants do to Jessica!? She came home yesterday super pissed off and now she's gone!" Roxxane yelled from the phone.
Inu Yasha winced at the shriek. "What the hell are you talking about?!"
"Jessica's gone you jackass! She left a note saying she was leaving and she might come back in a few days, and now she's gone!"
~~~
And so ends another chapter. Sorry it took so long, I started another story, had writers block and Labor Day weekend was a nightmare. So many angry people…. But it’s done and I need to finish chapter four of Stop Me When the Dream Ends, and start the next chapter for this one…. (sigh)
