Chapter 13: Run Away Puppy

~~~
Two days and a box of hair dye later Jessica was almost back to normal, despite the numerous Band-Aids covering her. Why Laura had yelled that she thought Inu Yasha was cute over the phone was beyond her, but thankfully no one said anything after she finished yelling back at Laura that he was a pain in the ass. She did not need that right now....
It was early still, only ten o'clock but still early by the house's standards, when Tiffany dragged everyone [meaning Laura and Jessica] up from sleep. Apparently they were going to meet a few more friends today so they couldn't sleep in. So as Jessica dragged herself to the living room with Laura clinging to her back, still asleep, she stopped looking outside.
"Hey, I think somebody's coming to the door...." she mumbled, blinking in the light of the new morning. Laura muttered something into her back that nobody caught, most-likely about doughnuts [they watched Trigun the night before].
The person knocked on the door loudly, muttering something as Tiffany walked over and answered the door. "Uhhh... Jessica, I think it's for you...." Tiffany said, mildly surprised.
Jessica unfortunately was flat on her face on the coach, unable to move underneath Laura's weight as she shoved herself up at the sound of the grumbling. There was a loud squeal before she crashed into the person at the door, tackling them to the ground. Jessica looked up to see what was going on only to see Inu Yasha on the ground, trying to pry her friend off himself. Laura on the other hand looked like she was attempting to take his clothes off while asking if she could bare his children. Jessica was too shocked to say anything.
"Damnit woman get off me!!!!" Inu Yasha yelled, attempting to remove the girl without hurting her since she was a friend of Jessica's, but he was seriously thinking of removing her hands just because. "Jessica get off your ass and help me!!!"
"No way, not till you let me have your children!!!!" Laura squealed.
"I'd sooner dance naked on live TV than let that happen!" he yelled back. Somehow Laura had managed to pull him into the house and pushed him flat on his face, ending any comments from him as she sat on his back and tried to pull his clothes off that way.
"Sorry about that... Laura's a little grabby..." By the time they pulled Laura off him he had lost his shirt to the fangirl and his pants were unzipped [don't even wanna know how...]. So as Tiffany walked off to retrieve the stolen shirt from Laura, Jessica waited with the half naked half-breed in the living room. Jessica was trying her hardest not to stare at his chest. His very built chest....
"A little?! You people act like this is normal!" Inu Yasha huffed from the floor, his face red with embarrassment. He couldn't believe he was bested by a human fangirl!
"Sure, but when Laura jumped me I managed to keep my shirt..." Jessica giggled. The half-breed glared at her and crossed his arms over his chest, his face blushing a darker red. "Now... why are you here? Because last I checked, I wasn't coming back to Tahoe till tomorrow..."
Inu Yasha froze, not expecting her to jump right in and ask him that. "I know what Sephiroth's doing with those people..." Jessica remained silent, an eyebrow raised as she waited for him to continue. She has no idea how much she looks like her brother right now... he thought before he continued. "According to the guys back at Enix he's gathering Centra..."
"....And why is he doing that?" Jessica asked, the look that was on her face before replaced by confusion.
"Be damned if I know, all they'd tell me is that they think that's the reason they're collecting them..." After a moment's thought he added, "That and they seemed pretty pissed that I knew you were here and didn't say anything..."
"And that still doesn't explain why you're here..."
Inu Yasha was obviously avoiding the subject, twitching this way and that. Then suddenly he shouted out, "Don't you ever wear a bra, woman?!"
As Tiffany walked out, holding Inu Yasha's shirt in hand, she watched as Jessica pulled a pillow [left over from last night] and attempted to beat the offending half-breed to death with it. Jessica started yelling cruses at him in Japanese that she was surprised she knew, which drew Laura back out. Next thing anyone knew everyone was in a pile on the ground in what Laura called a 'sexy sandwich' [not to be confused with the 'McLovin'].
Moving the pillow out of his face, Inu Yasha looked over Jessica's shoulder at the insane girl currently holding on to the red faced woman on top of him. "Are you related to Miroku?"
Laura giggled innocently as she replied, "No, but I could if you want..."
Shoving herself and Laura upright, Jessica got up and mumbled, "Screw saving the world... somebody shoot me now and get it over with...."
Inu Yasha pushed himself back up and glared at Jessica as she walked away to get dressed. Roughly putting his shirt back on he yelled, "Like hell woman! You're not leaving me to deal with this!!!"
"Listen! I'll die when I want to, got it!?" she yell from around the corner.
"No way, I'm not dealing with your family's shit!!"
Jessica stormed back around the corner, fully dressed this time, and yelled, "You and your brother started all this, not me, if anybody should be dealing with this it should be you!!!"
Inu Yasha didn't say anything for a moment, only stared at Jessica in mild shock. In her blue t-shirt and white pants, pulling her hair up high as she glared at him through her bangs, she looked exactly like her mother. Ears flattened, he huffed and looked away from her. “Your dad was in on it too...”
“Yes, but you two were the ones that pissed him off....”
“You're not going to win this argument so stop while you're ahead...” Tiffany warned Inu Yasha as she walked by, grabbing her shoes as she went.
“So... why are you here Inu-puppy? Something bad happening...” Laura paused as she dropped to the couch, all ready to go, “... Oh! Did your brother get mad at you for loosing Jessie?”
“Wha-? No Damnit!” Inu Yasha yelled. “And don’t call me that!!!”
“Then why are you here?” Jessica asked again.
“Because I had a feeling that if I didn’t come down here and check on you something would happen and we’d never see you again!” he shouted. When nobody said anything in return he stared at the ground and continued, “When I was talking with the Enix guys they kept hinting that if we didn’t keep a close eye on you we’d lose you to Sephiroth... And as is I owe your sister a hundred bucks for gettin this wrong, I didn’t want to get this wrong too....”
Everyone was quiet for a few moments after, taking in what he said. Tiffany was the first to get up, “I’ll go get Jay...”
“Why do you own Roxxane a hundred bucks?”
"Because I bet her that you wouldn't be hiding here...." Inu Yasha snorted, still pissed he lost.
"Where else would I go?" Jessica asked, childish confusion written on her face.
"I don't know, anywhere that wasn't Tahoe..."
After they got Jay comfortable in an extra backpack and Inu Yasha retrieved the long bag carrying weapons for Jessica and himself should the need arrive [and he had a really good feeling they'd need them]... and Laura assuring Inu Yasha that Jessica did indeed have a bra on this time... ..., they were out and on the bus down to the main area of Pacifica where they were meeting the rest of Jessica's friends. The main street was nearly empty of people with the exception of a news crew doing a piece on how more homes were going to have to be closed since the cliff wall was receding again*. Well… them and the random group of people hoping to get one the news. Vultures.
They were an odd bunch her friends were, but considering that he was a half demon and Jessica was something a little less than human they were good friends to have. And he'd bet anything they were what kept her sane through high school. The four waiting for them at the bus stop were shocked to see him with her; the ones named Derrick, Bradley and Robert all dropped to the ground and began calling Jessica a god.
"Your brother has nothing on you!" Robert cried as he bowed to her. "We're not worthy of your heavenly grace!"
Inu Yasha pushed his hat up and gave Jessica a sideways glance, as if to ask her what was wrong with them. Jessica put a hand over her eyes, trying to block the sight out. "No, I don't know what's wrong with them... It's just a product of playing too many video games... And stop calling me a god; you'll piss off the real one."
The one not bowing to her was Adam, who gave a lopsided grin at their friends’ antics. "I'm sorry Jessica, I tried telling them when you call this morning, but they wouldn't believe me... So what brings you to the fine city of Pacifica?"
"He ran away!" Laura yelled, cutting off any reply Inu Yasha was going to give. Laura didn't want their friends to know about the attack that may happen yet, they were too worried about Jessica as is. "Since Lord Fluffy didn't have Jessie to beat on he when back to beating on him, so he ran away till she had to come back!!!"
Inu Yasha didn't say anything, since half of what she said was true anyway. But that wasn't the real reason he wasn't talking. In the parking lot behind them a van pulled up, and not a friendly looking one at that. Adam and Tiffany noticed it too, staring at it darkly as it slowly came to a halt.
"Don't turn around Jessie... but that van is back..." Laura whispered, shyly looking at the imposing vehicle out of the corner of her eye.
"You mean this isn't the first time it's shown up?" Inu Yasha asked, attempting to slide his sword out of his bag without anyone seeing.
"Only yesterday... Why is it bad...?" Laura asked.
"That's a Deep Ground deployment truck... they used them during the Crisis Core timeframe..."
"How the hell do you know that?!" Derrick asked.
"He owns Square Enix, but I think we have bigger problems right now..." Jessica said, her back to the van as she stared out at the concrete that cut straight through town that held the highway. "You remember how I told you that I had that bad feeling in my stomach the day we saved my mom... I've got it again..."
AN: Okay I lied. The chapter was getting too long again, so I broke it into two chapters. But never fear, the next chapter is 80 percent done so I should have it up by.... Tuesday, Saturday at the latest... hopefully... [So bad at writing action....]
* The piece on the cliff wall in Pacifica is true [partly true, anyway]. About six or seven years ago we had a really bad rainy season and half of the sea wall, which is sandy to begin with, went straight into the ocean. Four families lost their homes and the whole thing was all over the bay area news as they dropped the houses into the sea. What a media circus that was... While nothing like that has happened in years, it makes good story anyway!
