Chapter 14: The Smackdown in P-Town

~~~
The bus they had been waiting for stopped, but no one made a move to get on... Running just wasn't an option that Jessica had. Jay began moving wildly in the pack, screeching as he tried to push himself closer to Jessica as she quieted him down.
Inu Yasha didn't answer her; he could smell it in the wind. Pulling the Tetsusaiga from the bag roughly he threw the bag behind him to Adam as everyone made a semi circle around Jessica. “Take these and on my signal give these to Jessica...” he whispered.
“Why don't we give them to her now!?” Adam demanded.
“Just trust me; I've got a plan....”
Slowly the bus driver realized they weren't getting on and finally pulled away. Jessica just continued looking forward, even as Sephiroth pulled into view, a ghostly smirk across his lips. “When I said you had time to say goodbye to your family I not believe I told you that you could leave town....”
“Hey Jessica, don't look now or anything, but Hojo's here...” Adam called from behind her, quickly noting Sephiroth's presence before turning back to the neon soldiers coming out the back end of the truck.
“Holy shit, I thought he was dead...” Derrick whispered.
“He still looks dead to me...” Bradley replied, attempting to keep his tone hushed as he snickered.
Jessica felt her stomach churn, the thought of that weaselly old man as her real father made her sick. Taking a deep breath, she did the only thing she really knew how to do.
Make the situation worse.
“Oh goody, all we need is Lucrecia here and it'd be a family fucking reunion!” she cried out, throwing her hands up in disgust.
Sephiroth's eyes hardened just a little bit at the mention of the name and what it implied. Laura giggled behind her, something behind them making her laugh despite the fact that they could really die today.
“Jessie, you should have seen it, his entire face twitched!”
“How do you know who Lucrecia is!?!” a voice cried, the very sound of the voice familiar. It was Hojo.
Jessica turned to Inu Yasha as he stood beside her and commented, “Wow, you guys did a great job on the voice actors in Cerberus....”
Taking the comment in stride, Inu Yasha smirk before deciding to answer Hojo's question. “Everyone that's ever played the games my company put out knows all your little secrets... Except for Jessica here, we kept her out of the limelight... Had to save something for now,” Inu Yasha added with a smirk.
“Yay! An evil space mutant isn't Jessie's mom, good for her!!!” Laura yelled, intent on helping things get worse.
Sephiroth's face contorted in pure fury, his green eyes glowing bright as he stepped into the street and made his way to the group. “You would let this... human speak wrongly about Jenova after all this... after all she's done?” he said through clenched teeth.
Inu Yasha let Tetsusaiga transform, blocking Sephiroth's path to Jessica with the great sword.
“Jenova has never done anything to make Jessica's life any easier!” Adam yelled.
“Without Jenova's life giving cells Jay would not have lived past the first few days of birth,” Hojo said in an overly confident way, as if they were too stupid to understand what he was saying or how important it was. “That is why her project name was 'J', she was to be named after Jenova as the only female subject to survive the tests!”
Jessica's backpack chirped at the sound of his name as her fist twitched, she hated being called that. They were going to name me after Jenova?! her mind cried in outrage.
“Oh shit...”
“You've done it now...”
She turned to the man that was her father, take her first real look at him. He had to be at least as tall as her, his greasy hair black hair pulled back the same way she normally did, his dark eyes staring at her through his glasses in shock as she turned around and glared at him with all her might. He didn’t look any older than the man that raised her, but then again that was the experiments he did on himself talkin’. Somewhere in the back of her mind she thanked god she listened to Rin and got contacts.
“I don't go by that name anymore,” she bit out in barely controlled rage. “I gave that name to someone else... And as for Jenova, where was she when my sister knocked out one of my teeth when I was six? Or the time I hurt my back and couldn't walk for a week when I was eight? OR BETTER YET!!! How about last month when Genesis broke three of my ribs and I had to go to a doctor that wasn't human to fix them!!!!?”
Sephiroth stopped in the middle of the street.
“You didn't hear that?” Inu Yasha taunted. They needed to end this quick and draw him away fast, people were beginning to notice them. “The day after you left we had to rush her over to one of our people, if it wasn't for that she'd probably have a punctured lung by now...”
Jessica half turned to look back at Sephiroth and looked at him. He wasn't move, even though he held his sword in hand as if ready to attack. And he didn't say anything either. He only looked at her, like he was seeing straight through her. She could hear it... He was trying to see into her mind!
Jay screamed just as the familiar pain crashed over Jessica, tearing a whole in the backpack just to get to Jessica. He sat, his entire body wrapped around Jessica's neck as it sparked in its protective magic, hissing at Sephiroth with all his might. It took a moment for Jessica to realize that she wasn't in pain anymore. He really was able to stop Sephiroth... Looking she noted the shock expression on Hojo's face and the dark scowl that Sephiroth was giving the little dragon. Jay in turn screeched back at him and hid Jessica face behind his wing.
“The thought is very nice Jay, but you need to move your wing so I can see...” Jessica said. Jay stopped growling and chirped at Jessica in question, but moved his wing all the same.
“You gave your name to this... this monster!?” Hojo demanded.
Jay's head snapped around at the notion, screaming in outrage at being called 'a monster'. Before Jessica could stop him he unwound himself from her and launched himself at the offending man. Thankfully, Tiffany caught before he could get too far, she gripped him to her chest as he scream in what Jessica could only think as obstinacies at Hojo for calling him that.
“Jay isn't a monster, he's not a thing or an ‘it’. On this world Dragons are intelligent creatures that capable of independent thought and speech. Not only that they can use magic that no one else on this world can,” Jessica said using the same 'know it all' air that Hojo had used, “but once Jay is old enough he’ll be able to hold conversations in English, but until then I can tell you that he doesn't like being called that either.” Jay gave a series of chirps to enforce that fact.
“So you think this little… lizard is going to stop me...?” Another scream of outrage from Jay.
“No, but it keeps her from doing something that she’d live to regret,” Inu Yasha replied. Inu Yasha watched carefully as Sephiroth stepped onto the sidewalk, glaring at him for standing between them.
Another gust of wind blew, ruffling their hair as everyone tensed. They were waiting for everything to start.
“You won’t stop me…”
Inu Yasha snorted, “Sure, you keep thinkin’ that…”
“WATCH OUT!!!” Laura screamed seconds before the area behind them exploded, causing everyone to take cover. Inu Yasha was quick to act, grabbing Jessica before jumping out of the way of the flames. Everyone scattered as the soldiers moved forward, the bastard Genesis laughing from his perch on top of the van. His hand still glowed from casting whatever materia he used. Nobody was sure where he had come from.
Inu Yasha barely had time to react as Genesis jumped down and began attacking him, pushing him away from Jessica.
Jessica pushed herself up, looking around to get her bearings. Off in the distance she could see Hojo shouting orders to a couple of soldiers; she had a good idea that he wanted them to capture Jay. She couldn’t see Sephiroth anywhere, but he was probably with Genesis.
The sound of gun fire drew her attention before she could really wonder about Sephiroth, the bulk of the soldiers were firing at her friends as they hide behind parked cars. Jessica panicked at the thought of losing her friends and shot up in attempt to run to their aide. She didn’t get far, just as she scrambled to her feet she was pulled backwards by her hair. The hand grabbing her jerked her upwards, drawing a cry of pain from her.
“You should have listened to me when you had the chance,” Sephiroth stated coolly, a light smirk on his face as he watched the madness before them. Jessica tried to break the hold he had on her hair only to have him yank on it once more. “Now… these humans will pay for turning you against me…”
~~~

If there was one thing her dad taught her over the years, it was to always be prepared. When she was in middle school there was a girl that hated her to no end and was threatening to get her friends to beat the crap outta her. Being that she was raised in San Francisco her entire life there was no way for her to be sure that the girl wasn’t lying. So, to make her feel safer at school the next day he taped a scalpel to her back (he took it from the hospital the last time he was there). In the end she didn’t need it, but it was a lesson she learned well.

If you think something terribly bad will happen to you, then you’d better carry a weapon.

Jessica threw herself forward in an attempt to throw Sephiroth off balance, even a moment would help. For a moment it felt like he was losing grip, so just as he took hold of her once more she pulled the hunting knife Tiffany gave her that morning out from under her shirt.

In one clean upwards cut she hacked all of her hair off, leaving hair tie and all with him.

Jay suddenly appear out of nowhere, screaming in anger at Sephiroth as he realized that Jessica was no longer attached to the hair he was holding. Little sparks of blue lightning shot out of the dragon as he landed carefully on Jessica’s back, stunning Sephiroth to allow her to speed off towards her friends.

Inu Yasha, who had his hands full with crazy boy Genesis, noticed Jessica’s sudden freedom and shoved Genesis backwards as hard as he could, sending him into an empty business across the street. He all but threw himself at Jessica's overly pissed off brother, buying her more time.

“Now!” he yelled.

Despite the fact they were now surrounded Adam threw the swords over the heads, drawing their attention to the object to it as the group made to strike back at them. Jessica skidded to grab them in mid air, whipping the sheaths off both swords in one motion as she neared the group.

One of the animal like ones grabbed Laura, pulling her screaming from the group, its claws ready to attack. It stopped, one arm raised in the air. Laura looked up, seeing the glint of silver poking through its uniform, and saw Jessica standing there. She pulled the sword from the thing’s chest and watched it fall to the ground, twitching its life away. Jessica didn’t even have enough time to realize what she had done, two more (human-like ones) were on her in a moment. Jessica took out another as Adam grabbed a metal pipe and bashed the other’s head in before it could attack.

The remaining soldiers lined up, guns ready as Jessica picked Laura up from the ground. Somewhere she could hear someone yelling for them not to attack, but the order was not heeded. Just as they opened fire, Jessica closed her eyes, praying that the trick she used once before would work again.

Inu Yasha dodged the slice that Sephiroth aimed at his head, landing on the gas station roof as he watched the soldiers open fire on Jessica’s group. Most took cover behind more cars, scattered farther to keep them from being surrounded again. But he didn’t see Jessica or her friend Laura anywhere.

Suddenly there was a crash and an angry yelp from above the Safeway. Both of them landed in a heap on top of the overhang, thirty feet away and twenty feet above the ground.

“Yay! Jessie that was fun, let’s do it again!!!” Laura yelled out happily.

Jessica pushed the woman off of her and stood up, taking a look of her surroundings. She looked down at her hands, noticing that they were empty she complained, “Hey, what happened to my swords!?”

“I got them!” Adam yelled, fisting both weapons in his hand to show her that he indeed have them. “Jay’s here too!” Said dragon clawed his way up Adam’s back to show her that he was still there, only to duck back out of sight when Hojo began yelling for someone to catch ‘the little beast’.

Jessica sighed in relief, noting Inu Yasha’s place on the 76 station’s roof and Sephiroth’s as he stood in the parking lot. Motioning to Laura, Jessica jumped down from the sign and caught her friend as she tried to come up with some sort of plan to get her friends out alive.

Unfortunately Genesis had other plans.

“Say goodnight princess…”

~~~
Inu Yasha watched in shock as Genesis threw countless balls of energy at Jessica, so many it threw up dust and debris so that they couldn’t see what had happened. He knew that she couldn’t die yet, but it still worried him. What if something happened to Laura? Jessica was attached to her and if something happened to her it was crush her. Neither he nor Sephiroth moved, Sephiroth most likely shocked that Genesis would be stupid enough to attack his sister.
Slowly the dust settled.
The area where the attack hit was nothing but charred rubble, but the rubble was pushed up on all sides in the center. In the air there were words and symbols written everywhere surrounding Jessica and her friend in a language Inu Yasha didn’t understand (and he bet Jessica couldn't understand it either...), her hands in front of her where two large symbols flouted.
Laura, who had been attempting to poke a curly word before her, turned around and gasped.
“Jessie’s sprouting wings!!” In reality Jessica had only one wing coming from her back, but it was a shock that she had in the first place.
Infact, Jessica hadn’t even noticed her new appendage. The only thing she could think of was protecting her friend. One minute she realized that Genesis was going to blow Laura and her into little bitty piece and then next moment she noticed Laura was hugging her from behind, her head pushed into the small of her back, telling her that she wasn’t a monster.
Needless to say Jessica was very confused when she came to.
“Laura what the hell are you talking about?!” she asked, not even turning around to look at her. She was trying to keep her eyes on Genesis, who was looking at her in mild shock. Just barely looking to the side her she noticed everyone was staring at her like she had grown a second head. It took all her will not to check. “Okay, not only am I pissed off, now I’m confused. What’s going on?”
“This!” Genesis cried, throwing a fire spell at her this time.
Jessica pushed up into the attack, deflecting it as the protective magic dispelled. Genesis was on her in a second, she barely dodged the slice from his sword as she threw herself sideways. She wasn't so lucky the next time. Genesis kicked her sharply in the stomach, sending her flying twenty feet before she came to a stop, hitting her head on a piece of a car as she flew by. Somewhere off to the side she could hear him laughing as he called her a traitor, Inu Yasha and Sephiroth fighting again somewhere else, and countless other voices. Jessica rolled onto her side as she tried pushing herself up. Everything felt fuzzy to her, like someone stuffed her head full of cotton.
Oh hey look... white feathers... she thought numbly as she slowly moved herself upright. Once she was sitting up she noticed that she felt heavier than normal. That's when she noticed the white wing limply hanging from her right shoulder. So that's what Laura was talking about... I hope it's not broken... Carefully she willed the thing to move, watching in childish fascination as it weakly flapped. Nope... not broken... just hurts a little bit...
“Jessica watch out!!!!”
Suddenly the world came back into sharp focus just as Genesis was bearing down on her, sword ready to strike her. Jessica threw herself backwards at the last moment, rolling into a crouch a few feet away from him. She didn't come away unhurt, the thrust had been aimed for her shoulder but when she rolled it caught her on the side of her face instead.
“My, my... you're faster than the last time...” Genesis laughed.
Jessica glared back at the man, not saying anything as he laughed at her. But she still didn't make a move, even as Adam quietly waved to her as he held her swords in his hand. Jessica tapped the ground, signaling that she wanted him to throw them to her, which looked like to any other person that she was twitching. Genesis saw Adam moving out of the corner of his eye and turned to attack. But Adam proved faster, the swords reached Jessica before he could completely turn around.
Jessica lunged at Genesis with all her might as he turned back around and met her blades, his eyes dancing in humor. He pushed back on Jessica, forcing her back into her crouched position, his face close enough to her face to where she could feel his breathe on her cheek.
If this had been a movie she'd make a joke about the two people kissing... but since she was the other there she did not want that to happen.
“Trying to be like you brother, are we?” he drew out, his face getting a little too close for comfort.
She didn't want or have the time to explain to him that she didn't have a choice in learning to fight, Inu Yasha was attempting to shove Sephiroth off him long enough to help her. She was a hell of a lot stronger than she was in the beginning, but the presser Genesis was using was killing her.
But then again, she did have an idea....
Tilting her head away from the offending man before her, Jessica mumbled, “Dude... has anyone told you that your breathe could wake the dead?” Genesis looked at her in shock, moving back just slightly, giving Jessica enough room to her to smash her own face directly into his. She could hear the bones in Genesis's nose snap under the sudden force of her connecting forehead. Genesis threw himself backwards, yelling out in surprise as he clutched his face in hopes to stem the flow of blood coming from his nose. “That's for my ribs asshole!!!!” She yelling, fully intent on going to help Inu Yasha.
Jessica didn't even have a chance to attempt to run after him though. Just as she turned to run Genesis regained his senses and charged at here with all his might, sending both of them flying out into the street. All but one of Jessica's swords went flying over the guard rail, falling to the highway below. The first few moments he had her pinned to the ground, trying his hardest to strangle the life out of her while Sephiroth was too busy the half breed to care. Using both hands to hold her down, he glared down at her insanely as he watched her try to push his hands off herself. Using her wing to push herself up, Jessica managed to grab Genesis's shoulders as her knee connected painfully with a vital manly part.
Genesis cried out in pain, holding himself as Jessica shoved him off her. Genesis rolled off her with a painful groan, sputtering promises of death if he caught her. Stumbling over, Jessica picked up her fall sword of no name as she steadied herself on the railing. Taking a quick look around she noticed that people had blocked off both sides of the street a block down from where they were, crowds on each side watching in muted shock at the fight. Even on the other side of the over pass there were people gathering to watch. Out of the corner of her eye she saw something glint in the sun, drawing her attention to the old movie theater.
Jessica stood frozen at the sight of the news crew, still there after their report of the cliffs... and taping (red lights are bad!!!) “Oh good lord! Have they been taping this whole time!?”
Inu Yasha skidded to a halt beside Jessica, eyeing Genesis in confusion. "What the hell happened to him?"
"The face or him on the ground?" Jessica took a good look at Inu Yasha, noting the deep cuts and slashes on his person as she pushed herself against the concrete railing. Not that she was in any better condition, what with her face bleeding and the cuts and bruises all over.
"I saw what happened to his face, but..." Inu Yasha caught the cruses coming out of Genesis's mouth, though slower now as he started to regain his footing. "... Please... tell me you didn't use the Kick of Death..."
"No, no, no..." Jessica answered. "It was more like a knee of death... but we have bigger problems right now." Jessica grabbed Inu Yasha's head and turned it to face the news crew. In the few minutes that had passed two more vans pulled up, each one baring a different news channel on the side.
"Please tell me those aren't on right now..." When Jessica nodded, Inu Yasha groaned loudly as he rested his sword against his shoulder. "You know, if they're watching this right now we're dead."
Genesis suddenly came flying out of nowhere, missing Inu Yasha by inches as he slammed into the guard rail. Both of them winced as the man slammed into the opposite wall, leaving a man sized hole in the wall before he fell to the ground. Chunks of concrete hit the high way below, causing many drivers to swerve and crash.
"I think it's more important that we survive this..."
Yes… I suck at fighting… But at least it’s better than the days of my earlier stories when I only posted at fanfiction.net… Those were painful to even read. But I have gotten better! The end of this gave me the hardest time... I re-wrote it twice before it sounded right! As for the kick of death, I think I'll explain that in the next chapter....
MM.Org Review:
GreyPheonix: Don’t feel sorry about not reviewing… I knew somebody out there liked the story, that’s why I continued writing it. I realize that I suck at writing battles and stuff because I haven’t had enough time to get better at writing it since normally by now enough people would have told me the story sucked and I would have stopped writing it (most of those people are at fanfiction.net so I don’t listen to them). (On the informal part… I normally write this at work… so that might be a factor in that ^.~) I promise though that I’ll start writing about the training… Once I find so free time after I finish the first part of the story I might take your advice and rewrite it… but in the coming months I’ll be looking into going to college so no guarantees on that (I'll try!!!). But you are the first person to take the time and tell me things to improve the story outside of ‘nobody like self inputs, so stop writing’ for this story. So thank you very much, I hope you continue reading!
