Part 7 Tails, tails everywhere

Any awkwardness remaining from the night before dissolved as the two parents stared at the scene in front of them. Gohan, as the oldest and having had a tail before seemed to be taking it the best, struggling to his feet, only to trip and fall over again, as his body struggled to remember how to move with the counterbalance of a tail. The two younger chibis though….

Goten appeared mesmerized by his tail, watching it twitch back and forth as he lay on his back, not even attempting to get up. Trunks, cheek swollen and eye starting to color, had apparently taken a bad fall out of bed, and was almost crying in a mixture of anxiety and frustration. Vegeta simply didn't know what to think. The rational part of his mind told him to stop gawping and help his son. The rest of his brain was filled with a strange buzzing sound, as it attempted to make sense of what had happened.

Of course he knew tails regenerated. He, Kakkarott and Gohan were living proof of that. And perhaps it wasn't so strange that his and Kakkarott's tails had regenerated so close to one and other. But add in the chibis, and things just got plain weird. A fierce screech from the other room reminded Vegeta that he had another person to take care of. He shook his head slightly to clear it, and setting his shoulders, waded into the tangle of bedclothes.

Gohan had managed to lurch over to a bed, and Goku was sitting beside him, talking softly to his eldest son. Vegeta simply picked up the two little boys, deposited Goten in his father's lap and carried his own son out into the living room where Sage was furious at being left out of the excitement.

"Play with your brother for a moment, will you Trunks?" asked Vegeta as he set his lavender haired offspring on the floor beside the angry chibi. "I need to get him a bottle."

Trunks sniffed, and nodded as he turned to his younger sibling. Sage, recognizing Trunks, dropped his grouchy and demanding mood and rolled over onto his back, trying to get closer to his brother. Without thinking about it, Trunks waved his newly re-grown tail above his brother's face. Sage stared at it for a moment, and then purred, reaching chubby arms towards Trunks' silvery-purple tail.

Vegeta, on his way back in to the living room, bottle in hand, paused a moment taking in the scene in front of him. A warm and fuzzy feeling rushed through him as he watched his sons, his Saiyjin sons interact with each other as only two Saiyjin's could. (author takes a moment to awwwwwwwww) All weirdness aside, Vegeta was tremendously glad that Trunks' tail had grown back.

By the time Sage had finished his first morning bottle, Gohan had managed to get his feet back under him. But the two younger boys still couldn't seem to get the hang of walking again. Lessons were put on hold however, as five ravenous stomachs rumbled as one. In the end, Goku carried both the chibis to the table for breakfast, and then to the bathroom, to deal with necessary functions.

"I think," said Vegeta as he put Sage down for his midmorning nap. "That we had better extend the camping trip at least a day so the boys can get used to their tails." He looked at Goku who looked slightly conflicted.

"There's less stuff to break out here, more room to move. Fewer hard surfaces." explained Vegeta, thinking the younger man was confused.

"Hai, Vegeta, but that's not it." The man sounded nervous. Vegeta's eyes narrowed.

"Then what is it, baka? Explain."

The senior Son looked slightly embarrassed. "I don't think Chichi will let the boys keep their tails."

Vegeta snapped.

"CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHEN THOSE BAKAYARO HUMAN WOMEN WERE GRANTED THE POWER TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO REMOVE AN ENTIRE LIMB FROM SAIYJINS???" he bellowed, not even remembering that he had moments before laid his sleeping son down. Sage didn't stir, however.

Goku flinched. Vegeta treated him to a disdainful look, and stomped outside where Gohan was helping Trunks and Goten try to walk. Vegeta could hear Kakkarott close on his heels.

"Gohan," snapped Vegeta. Gohan looked up, surprised etched in the teen's face.

"Yes, Vegeta-san?"

"Do you want to keep your tail?" asked Vegeta in an expressionless voice.

Gohan's face lit up. "Oh yes," he breathed. "I've missed it so much. And you should have felt my ki jump when I woke up this morning. It was incredible. I feel….whole."

Vegeta nodded. He turned to Goten who had just fallen over again, and was giggling on the ground with Trunks.

"Goten, do you want to keep your tail?"

"Yes!" shrieked the three year old, as Trunks tried to grab the tail in dispute. "I love my tail, Vegeta-san!" Vegeta watched in amusement, as the two chibis engaged in a rolling, crawling version of the Saiyjin children's game, tail tag. Each tried to grab the other's tail, while avoiding being caught themselves. Vegeta couldn't help it, it was another Hallmark moment. He smiled. (author takes a moment to snap a picture)

Vegeta turned to back to face Kakkarott, a scathing remark set upon his lips. But he never voiced it. Such a stunning face should never look so sad, he thought to himself. Kakkarott's expression so distracted Vegeta, that he didn't even mentally berate himself for considering Kakkarott to be "stunning."

Something clicked in Vegeta's brain.

"That's why she won't have sex with you," he said quietly. "You won't give up your tail."

Goku resisted meeting those obsidian eyes.

Vegeta was impressed in spite of himself. He started to speak, when Kakkarott broke in angrily.

"I couldn't believe it," he all but spat. "One night, my tail regenerates, and I am beyond horny. I want her so badly that I almost couldn't see straight. She took one look at my tail and screeched that she wasn't going to sleep with an animal, and that if I ever wanted to sleep in my own bed again I would get "that thing" removed at once." He paused, breathing hard. When he continued, it was with slightly more control. "I've slept on the couch, or in the boys' room, or just stayed out all night since then. Having my tail back felt so right, I couldn't conceive of giving it up. Not even for Chichi."

Vegeta didn't know what to say. He started towards Kakkarott, and stopped when the taller Saiyjin broke out angrily. "She KNOWS I'm not human. She KNOWS it, and I am supposed to act like I am. I always did before, I know. Only let my Saiyjin self out when I fought. It's ok not to be human as long as I save the planet. But I'm not human. My son's aren't completely human." His voice broke as he choked back a sob. He whispered so softly, that Vegeta almost couldn't make out what he was saying.

"And I am so tired of pretending."

To be continued….
