A Slight Reprieve
Vegeta flew at full speed toward his now temporary home. He didn't even slow his pace as he made it toward the ocean. Usually he would slow down and travel close to the water so he could feel the sea-spray on his face. But not today, not now, he was in too much of a hurry to warn Pan about her unexpected visitor.
Finally the outline of the island appeared in the horizon, as he smirked. His smirk quickly faded as the shack came into view. The realization of the state of his home made him suddenly sad. Pan was right to be concerned about their current state. Surely he must have realized that they could not bring children up in a place such as this.
As he got closer, he could just make out Pan standing at the waters edge. She became more and more visible as he neared, until he touched down behind her quietly.
“Where have you been?” She asked quietly, not even turning to face him. Vegeta stepped up behind her and placed his arms around her stomach, carefully laying his hands on his unborn children. She sighed as let her head rest on his shoulder. “I was worried you know,” she sighed.
“I went to the city,” he answered. Pan pulled away and turned to face him.
“You didn't do anything stupid did you?” she scolded him, half jokingly.
“I hope not,” he answered as he reached for her hand. He held it tightly as he looked into her eyes.
“Vegeta, what did you do?” She pulled her hand away angrily.
“You're going to have a visitor soon, you should probably get dressed,” he mentioned before walking back to the house slowly. Pan stood still for a second, before running after him.
“Wait! She yelled trying to catch him, her extra weight and the weakness that accompanied it made it very difficult to exert any energy. He turned to watch her struggling, and the look of tiredness and aggravation that went with it. He had watched her over the course of this pregnancy become weaker and weaker, and he also noted how upset she was as she slowly lost her speed and strength.
Vegeta stopped and waited for her to meet him, before he placed an arm around her to guide her toward the shack.
“Who's coming?” Pan asked wearily as she held tight to him.
“Someone that can help us,” he answered as he opened the door and let her walk through before. Pan looked up apprehensively, yet she could not contain the small smile that passed her lips. She walked into the bedroom and quickly got dressed. Vegeta sat at the table waiting for her, and their visitor to arrive.
“Is it a secret or surprise, or something, is that why you won't tell me?” Pan asked as she entered the room while tying her hair in a ponytail. She walked around to Vegeta and placed her arms around his shoulders and leant her chin on his shoulder. “Hmm?”
“No,” he answered simply before pulling her suddenly onto his lap. Pan kissed him lovingly as he held her tight. Vegeta's ears suddenly pricked up as she watched him curiously. She couldn't sense anyone coming though. Finally she heard the air-car as it got closer. She knew that no cars came by their secluded little lagoon. It must be their visitor.
Pan suddenly leapt off Vegeta and looked to him excitedly. He simply nodded as she went to the door. She quickly went outside eager to meet this mysterious person who was coming to help them. She turned to watch Vegeta slowly making his way toward her with his arms firmly folded. She turned back to see the car land beside her.
Pan watched intently as the door slowly opened. Finally she saw the person inside as her face fell. It hurt to see him. He had always been extremely proud of her, and now he looked on as she was at her lowest point, but that was why he was here was it not? She mustered a smile as he stepped toward her.
“Grandpa,” she almost wept as she hugged him. He held her tightly, as he looked at Vegeta, and then to the shack behind him.
“Pan honey,” Satan spoke solemnly. It had been so long since he had seen her. The formal birthday party all those months ago, if remembered correctly. He had of course heard about his granddaughter and Vegeta from Videl, but to see it with his own eyes bought it all home.
“It's been so long since I've seen you, and so much has changed,” Pan pulled away to look him in the face. He nodded as he looked down to look at her protruding belly. She smiled nervously as she noticed and rubbed her stomach lovingly.
“I can see that,” Satan spoke again as he looked at her belly then to Vegeta. She also noticed this as she turned to see her mate. She grabbed her grandfather's hand and led him toward Vegeta.
“Please, please don't blame him for any of this. I know how my mother would have told you, but you have to understand. I am happy. This is what I wanted, perhaps not exactly, but I am with the man I love, and that's all that matters,” Pan started. Satan only looked at Vegeta.
“Please understand,” she begged.
“Pan I don't agree with what has taken place, but if you are happy, that's what really matters to me,” Satan answered her the best way he could think of. “More importantly, what does it matter to me is your safety and your health, especially since you're pregnant,” He paused at the last word, as it seemed to almost sting him.
“I am safe,” she spoke up a little defensively.
“What I mean is, this place, it's not safe. The house looks like it could be blown down in the next breeze, and you are too far from any hospital if you were to have any complications,” Satan tried to make himself clear.
Pan turned to Vegeta for guidance, as he simply nodded to what the old man was saying.
“What I'm trying to say is I will give you a house to live in. Both of you, and of course your baby. I want you be looked after,” Satan embraced his grand daughter protectively.
“Grandpa, it's too much, we can't accept such a generous gift,” Pan pulled away concerned. Why was he trying to help them? He didn't agree with her relationship with Vegeta. Why was he so willing to help them, when no one else cared what happened to them?
“Nonsense. Pan, I'm getting old, and I have so much money. I am the world's greatest hero remember?” Satan chuckled to himself. Vegeta rolled his eyes. He was not amused, even though he knew the old man was joking around.
“But…” Pan tried to argue, after ignoring his last comment.
“Nope, no buts, little lady. I mean what I'm saying is what's the use in having all that money, if I can't share it with my family? I just want to make sure you're taking care of. Besides, you weren't actually thinking of bringing up a child here were you?” Satan looked back up at the shack.
“I don't know what we were thinking?” She answered honestly. “Thank you; thank you for helping us, when everyone else is just trying to forget us,” Pan welled up. Satan held his granddaughter tightly to comfort her. Vegeta watched the family members embracing as he thought back to his own family. How he used to comfort his daughter when she was upset. Just as much as everyone was trying to forget him and Pan, he also was trying to leave them behind too.
“My pleasure. So you should go and collect your things. The house is waiting for you. Fully furnished. And I have some of my men setting up a room for the baby,” Satan let her go and nudged her toward the shack.
“Wait, there's something I have to tell you,” Pan quickly turned around at another mention of the baby. “We're having twins,” she continued as she smiled.
“Two children? Oh Pan…ah congratulations,” Satan replied almost sadly.
“Well thank you,” Pan answered, ignoring his tone.
“I will ring my men and get them to set it up for two babies, while I'm doing that you can go get your things,” Satan explained as he reached for his phone and started dialing.
Vegeta walked toward Pan and put an arm around her before leading her toward the house. Pan sat on the make-shift bed as he started to make a pile of the few things they actually owned.
“He doesn't approve you know. You heard him right. He isn't happy for me at all,” Pan suddenly turned to Vegeta. He came and sat next her as he finished up.
“He's your grandfather. He was never going to approve of anyone you bought home. In his eyes, no man is good enough for you,” he tried to comfort her.
“Thanks, but I know that's not it,” she smiled weakly. Vegeta nodded.
“He is helping us, that must mean something,” he muttered as grabbed the four corners of the sheet and tied them together to make a neat parcel of everything they needed.
“I can't say I'm going to miss this place,” Pan sighed. Vegeta picked up the make-shift bag and tossed it over his shoulder, before placing an arm around her.
“It did the job. Come on,” Vegeta nudged her forward.
“It was our first home though,” Pan almost replied to his comment as she slowly left the room.
They both slowly walked toward Satan as the waves continuously made it to the toes. Although the shack was horrible, she did have some good times here. She loved having the sea right outside. The seclusion was great too. It meant always meant that they could train, while her body was willing in the first few months, without anyone seeing them, or endangering anyone. Pan always thought it would be perfect to bring a child here.
“Put it in the back,” her grandfather snapped her back to reality. Vegeta tossed the bag into the back of the car.
“Come on Pan,” Satan beckoned to her. “Time to go to your new home,” He smirked.
Vegeta put his arm around her and helped her into the car before stepping back.
“Vegeta?” She was confused as to why he wasn't getting in beside her.
“I will meet you there,” h answered her simply. She nodded. She understood that he wouldn't get into a car unless it was imperative he do so. Also with her grandfather in the car, and the one driving, it would hurt his pride to do so. It was bad enough this man had bought his family their home, when he could not provide it himself. This situation was a blow to him already, but having this man then drive him there when he could fly there himself that was too much. Pan of course could not fly, and it would be wrong to carry her all that way in her current state. She had to be driven there.
“Okay, I will see you there. Please don't be long,” she was worried that he would take and be hours off training somewhere. She could tell he was unhappy. His pride had taken a heavy blow today, and she knew he would most likely take it out on the nearest range to mountains. Vegeta nodded as he watched the car take off into the sky and in the direction of his new home.
Vegeta slowly floated up into the sky and looked down at the shack. He suddenly became angry as he looked down at the tiny, decrepit box. He suddenly formed a small energy ball and released it on his now old home. He watched as it splinted and exploded into tiny fragments across the shore. A few pieces of lumber were floating in the water bobbing in the waves, as the rest smoldered in the sand.
Finally after watching the last of the flames extinguish themselves, he took off toward Pan and their new home.
