Chapter 2: An Old Acquaintance

Berkley woke up in the morning to see that Ryo was already up and gone to work. Ryo was an early riser and Berkley was not surprised to see him up and out of the house already, but he had hoped they could have some morning sex before they both had to go to work. It was nights like last night that reminded him how glad he was to have Ryo as his lover and how much he needed to make sure that Ryo was his and only his, forever.

Ryo walked into the 27th precinct feeling a little nervous after the events that occurred at dinner the previous night. He didn't want to appear weak in front of his new partners. He turned the corner, nodding to the officer at the front desk and walked towards the back of the precinct where his new office with Dee and JJ. was located. Knocking on the door, he waited outside the office.

“You know you don't have to knock,” JJ. commented as he opened the door and motioned Ryo to come in. “It's your office too.”

“I didn't want to interrupt anything, that's all,” Ryo replied. Ryo hung his jacket on the coat rack and asked “JJ., where's Dee?”

“Oh, Dee's always late. It's just something everyone gets used to.”

“Oh,” Ryo replied, not knowing what else to say. He sat down and started to shift through the files on his desk.

“Hey guys!” Dee entered the office, with three coffees in his hand. “Lets say we drown these and then go on down to the shooting range? Randy, the chief would like to see how well you shoot and we could always use the practice anyways.”

“Sure,” Ryo replied. It had been a while since he practiced his shooting but if that's what the chief wanted. “I might be a bit out of shape though.”

“That's okay” JJ. quipped, “Dee's always out of shape.”

“Very funny JJ. Just because you're the best shooter on the force doesn't give you bragging rights,” Dee shot back at his lover. Secretly, Dee was proud of his boyfriend's skills. However, he didn't want to make JJ.'s head swell any larger.

“Really? That's great JJ.” Ryo commented. “So, why don't we go on down and get this over with, shall we?”

The three left their office and went down to the shooting range. JJ. and Ryo went to the gun rack and got out long-range rifles while Dee chose to use his normal handgun. After putting on earmuffs, the three men took their places and began shooting. As Ryo raised his gun to his shoulder, he remembered how much he enjoyed shooting. It was just you, the gun, and the target. It was a matter of focus and determination, not skill or luck, just the way Ryo liked it. The results came in, showing JJ. having the best aim with Ryo right after him.

“Wow, that's awesome Randy! So much for `I'm out of shape',” Dee said, slapping Ryo on the back.

“Yeah, well, I guess I'm not out of shape after all.” Ryo said, embarrassed by Dee's attention.

“Hell no!” Drake commented as he walked into the room. “Glad to see we have someone else that can shoot well besides JJ. By the way, the chief wants to see you three ASAP, apparently there's a hostage situation somewhere in the city. He wants you three on it.”

Ryo, Dee, and JJ. quickly exited the practice range and headed to the chief's office. Before Dee could knock, the chief opened the door and hurriedly waved them in. They were surprised to see that another man was in the room.

“Berkley?” Ryo asked in amazement.

“Yes, Commissioner Rose has decided to join us on this case,” the chief answered with emphasis on the title Commissioner. The chief did not like Rose very much; there was just something about him. However, the man did good police work and deserved respect.

“So what is this case about and why did you, Commissioner, decide to join us?” Dee asked, trying to get the chief's attention somewhere other then Ryo's mistake.

“A serial killer/rapist by the name of Takashi Yamamoto has taken a group of children and teenagers hostage close to West End. He's threatening kill the hostages one by one until we give him what he wants.” Berkley said, in a serious voice. “Detective MacLean and I have had previous encounters with this man, along with some of his hostages. Our personal information might greatly help this case.”

Ryo had frozen at hearing Takashi's name. He remembered that man, better then Berkley thought. Takashi had gone to the academy. He was one of Ryo's worst tormentors. Flickers of confrontations came rushing back, invading his mind. Ryo furrowed his brow and moved his hand to his head to rub his brow, trying to get his memories to leave him.

Dee noticed Ryo's look of fear and gently shook his shoulder, “Randy, are you alright?”

“What?” Ryo jerked out of his frozen state. “Yeah I'm fine. Sorry, please continue.”

“Detective MacLean and Laytner, I'm putting you in charge of the operation. Detective Adams, I'd like you to lead the SWAT team. Our aim is to take Yamamoto down before anyone is hurt.” Berkley ordered.

“Well, you've heard your orders, now get to work,” added the chief.

“Yes sir.” Ryo replied and the three detectives exited the office. Berkley grabbed Ryo's shoulder just outside the office.

“Be careful, Ryo. You know what Takashi is like. I want you to come back to me.”

“I will be careful, don't worry koibito. Aishiteru,” Ryo concluded and caught up to Dee.

Ryo and Dee got into their police car. Dee turned on the sirens and started to drive to West End. Dee turned towards Ryo and said “Okay, spill it. What is up with this guy? And what have been your experiences with him?”

“Look Dee, I can't tell you everything. Takashi used to be a cop. He worked at the same precinct that I did before I came to the 27th. He used his authority to rape children and teenagers that came under our care and would kill those who started to say something. However, there wasn't enough evidence to do much…until…” Ryo paused, unsure whether or not he should continue.

“Until what Randy? Come on, tell me. We're going into a situation where it could be dangerous if we're not on the same page.” Dee replied, frustrated.

“You're right, I'm sorry. I just don't like to remember. Until I caught him…in the act,” Ryo finished.

“Oh, shit. I'm sorry Randy.”

“It's okay. You had to know.” Ryo replied quietly.

The rest of the drive was spent in silence. Dee parked the cruiser next to the SWAT team van and Dee and Ryo got out of the car.

“We should probably go over there.” Dee said to Ryo, pointing over to the side of the building. “It looks like that's where everyone is gathering around.”

“Sure.”

Dee looked at Ryo worriedly. He seems so….distant, Dee thought to himself. I get the feeling that he's not telling me everything and that's makes me even more worried. What isn't he telling me? And what was he so scared about in the chief's office?

“I'm Detective MacLean and this is Detective Laytner.” Ryo introduced the two to a nearby officer, flashing his badge to avoid any questions. “So what's the current situation?”

“So you're the guys from the 27th,” the officer replied, glancing at the two partners.

“Yes, would you care to tell us what the situation is? There is no time to waste.” Ryo asked sharply. Dee looked at Ryo, surprised at the sharpness in his voice.

“Okay, okay, don't get so uptight. Our perp is in the building on the fifth floor in room 504. As far as we know, there's about four hostages, maybe a couple more. He wants 10 million along with a plane ticket out of here. Needless to say, we can't give him that so we're stalling for time.”

“Where is the SWAT team located?” Dee inserted.

“On every floor, blocking all entrances and exits. There are also top sharpshooters on the roof of the building facing the apartments on the south, waiting for a chance to take a shot.” JJ. informed Dee, coming up behind them.

“Do we know the names or ages of the hostages? Ryo asked.

“They are all around 13. We know that the name of one of the kids is Bikky. He managed to get a phone call in to 911 before the perp noticed.”

“Do you know if any of them are hurt?” Ryo had turned white after hearing Bikky's name. He looked at Dee, “Bikky was the one that I caught Takashi with,” he whispered to Dee.

“As far as we know, all the hostages are safe.” The officer answered.

“Do we have any contact with Yamamoto?”

“Yes we do. We have the phone number to the apartment along with his personal cell phone number.”

“Let me talk to him.” Ryo demanded. The officer was surprised at Ryo's request. He looked at Dee questionably, as to ask if Ryo was right in the mind.

“Just give us one sec okay?” Dee said to the officer and pulled Ryo over to the side. “Randy, are you sure you know what you are doing? If you're the man that had the evidence on Takashi then you might only enrage him.”

“Not if I offer myself in place of the hostages,” Ryo said calmly.

“What?! That's crazy! That man is a rapist and a killer. You are not going to put yourself in his grasp!” Dee exclaimed.

“Dee, he has Bikky and at the least three other kids up there! I will not let him hurt them! Not when I can stop him.”

“But Randy….” Dee started, not sure how to talk Ryo out of his idea.

“Dee, I have seniority here. I will overrule you if I have to. But I'd like to have your support. This is the only way and you know it.”

“Randy, promise me that you will keep your cool. I don't want to lose my new partner, okay?” Dee asked earnestly, after coming to the conclusion that Ryo was right He then surprised Ryo by giving him a hug. “Okay, so lets get this crazy plan started. JJ. get Randy a bullet-proof jacket. You there (pointing to the officers), get Yamamoto on the phone. Randy, go back to our car and grab yourself a walkie-talkie and fully equip yourself. Move people, move!”

As soon as Randy had assembled himself, one of the officers motioned him over and handed him the phone. “Here he is.”

“Takashi, this is Detective MacLean.”

“………...”

“It's Ryo. We went to the academy and worked at the 26th together.”

“………...”

“So here's the deal. You let the hostages go and I'll come in their place. Through me, you can negotiate your next step.”

“You sure you want to do this Ryo? I'm sure you remember how much FUN we had the last time we were together. You tasted so good. You sure you want me to have another taste?” Takashi asked creepily.

“Do you accept the offer?” Ryo asked, trying not to think of what Takashi had just said.

“Of course, Ryo. As soon as you reach the fifth floor, I'll release the kids.”

“Make sure you uphold your end. If anything happens to the kids…”

“I'm waiting, Ryo” Takashi hung up the phone.

“He said he would let the hostages go as soon as I reach the fifth floor,” Ryo informed Dee, “and then finish negotiations then.” Ryo turned to JJ. “When we leave the building, no matter what, try for a shot.”

“But Randy, if he's using you as a shield…” JJ. protested.

“Do it JJ. Promise me that you will try and take him down no matter what.” Ryo clasped JJ.'s shoulder.

“I promise.” JJ. relented to Ryo.

“Okay, let's do this.”

Ryo walked up to the building and entered the main lobby. The building was deserted. He made his way up the five floors. Once arriving on the fifth floor, he shouted “Takashi, I'm here! Let the hostages go now!” A door opened halfway down the hall and Bikky poked his head out. “Ryo! What are you doing here?”

“Bikky, get out of here now!”

“I'm not leaving you here by yourself,” Bikky said stubbornly.

“Don't be foolish Bikky. Get out of here now and take your friends with you. I'll be fine, I promise.”

“Okay Ryo, but be careful.” Bikky and his friends ran down the hall and exited down the stairs.

Ryo took a deep breath and headed down the hallway towards the door that Bikky had opened. He entered the room cautiously, looking in every direction.

“Hai, Ryo” said Takashi seductively, as he stepped out of an adjoining room, gun in hand pointed at Ryo's heart. “Wow, you still look great. Even more beautiful then I remember.”

Ryo shuddered at Takashi's comments. He thought back to the promise that he made to Berkley that he would come back to him. The more he stayed in the room, the more he thought that the promise might not be fulfilled.

“Well take a seat,” Takashi said, motioning towards the bed. “And take off that vest; we don't want you to have more clothing on then necessary, do we?”

Ryo slowly took off the bullet-proof vest, dreading what was going to happen next. He sat on the bed, waiting for his next orders.

“That's much better. Now you know the drill. Assume the position.”

Ryo stood up and went to the wall. He put his hands on the wall, spread his legs and waited for Takashi to pat him down. He sensed Takashi behind him and his whole body tensed up.

“Don't be scared Ryo, I'm not going to do anything ….yet.” Takashi began patting Ryo's legs, searching for any weapons. As he went down to Ryo's shoes, he came across the gun that Dee had told Ryo to grab. “Now, now Ryo, do you really think that I would miss this?” Takashi tossed the gun to the side. “Turn around and put these on behind your back,” Takashi demanded, tossing Ryo a pair of handcuffs. Ryo complied, shaking uncontrollably. As Ryo stood there, Takashi pressed his body to him, making Ryo notice his arousal by grinding his hips into Ryo's. “Now, how about we have some fun?” He pushed Ryo onto his knees and began to unzip his pants just as Ryo's walkie-talkie went off. Takashi set the gun down, grabbed Ryo by the collar and threw him onto the bed. “Stay there.”

“This is Detective Laytner. We managed to get the rest of your demands. Are you paying attention?”

“Hai.”

“I'm assuming that means yes so here goes. Exit immediately by the south side and there will be a taxi waiting for you. Enter the taxi and the driver will take you to the nearest airport where there will be a plane waiting. In order for the plane to take off, you must release your hostage.”

“That works.” Takashi replied and hung up the phone. He turned towards Ryo and said “So I guess that's the end of our play time. Get up, we're leaving.”

Ryo struggled to get up, having no hands to support him or balance him in any way. He finally got to his feet, only to have Takashi grab him roughly and push him out the door.

“Okay Ryo so here is how it goes. You're going to be my shield until we get to the taxi. The police don't know it yet, but I'm not going on that airplane. You and me are going to be picked up by my associates and driven to another place. At that place, we're going to have some play time and then I'll return you to your lover. Understand?”

Ryo just nodded. That's what he thinks, Ryo thought to himself. Little does Takashi know that JJ. will take him down before he even gets to the taxi. Ryo had faith in JJ.'s skills, he just hoped that JJ. would keep his promise.

“Let's go then, shall we?” Takashi led Ryo out of the apartment, keeping his own body shielded with Ryo's. They approached the door to the building and slowly entered the parking lot. The taxi was waiting about fifty metres away from the entrance.

“No way!” Takashi shouted. “Move the taxi closer to the entrance or I'll shoot him!” Takashi moved his gun to Ryo's head.

Dee motioned to the taxi driver to pull closer to the entrance. “Close enough?” He asked with sarcasm.

“Perfect,” replied Takashi. He dragged Ryo over to the taxi and just as he was going to open the door two shots rang out. The shots startled Takashi, who wasn't expecting any fire due to the fact that his hostage was a cop. He turned quickly, using Ryo as a shield. The first bullet hit Takashi in the left arm, around its estimated target. However, the second bullet hit Ryo. Seeing that his hostage just about had it, Takashi jumped into the taxi and fled the scene. Dee and other officers rushed towards Ryo, who had fallen hard onto the pavement. Ryo was breathing heavily, turning paler with every second. Blood poured from his wound, dying the pavement crimson.

“Randy, hang in there all right?” Dee begged, taking hold of Ryo's hand.

“I'll try…it …hurts so….much,” Ryo gasped, as he tried to remain conscious. He held tightly onto Dee's hand, as if it was his last anchor to the world.

“Just stay with me, okay? Stay awake Randy, stay awake,” Dee repeated, as he heard the sound of approaching sirens.
