Chapter 3: Injured
Dee walked down the hall, carefully balancing two coffees in one hand and a donut for JJ. in the other. He doubted that JJ. would eat it though, he was too stressed and worried about Ryo. Ryo had been shot just below his left shoulder and upon arriving at the hospital, was rushed immediately into surgery. The doctors refused to comment on Ryo's condition and the two men were becoming increasingly concerned. A doctor was paged over the intercom and Dee was reminded how much he detested hospitals. The tubes, the beeping noises, the needles, the evil nurses and the even eviller food, was overall, just a bad combination.
As these thoughts went through Dee's mind, he suddenly noticed that he was already back at the waiting room. He entered the room with some difficulty and went over to sit next to JJ. JJ. was hunched over, looking very distressed. Dee set the coffees and donut down on the table and put an arm around his boyfriend.
“Have we heard anything yet?” Dee asked quietly.
“Nothing,” JJ. replied with a sniffle.
“It wasn't your fault,” Dee stated, trying to comfort his lover.
JJ. wasn't listening to Dee. “I was the one who shot him. I shouldn't have shot. It was too big of a risk. And now Randy's paying for it!” He turned towards Dee, tears streaming down his face, “It was my fault!”
Dee embraced JJ., giving him a light kiss on the head. “Did you take all those kids hostage?”
JJ. shook his head no.
“Did you offer Randy as a substitute?” Dee continued.
JJ. shook his head, still not saying anything.
“Did you keep Randy's promise?”
JJ. nodded.
“Then why is it your fault?” Dee concluded rationally.
“It was my gun that landed the bullet in Randy. Mine! Meaning it was MY fault!” JJ. choked out, before breaking down into uncontrollable sobs.
Ignoring the stares from the other people in the room, Dee took JJ. into his arms and just held him, hoping to provide some sort of foundation for JJ., knowing that words weren't going to help at this point.

An hour later, Berkeley entered the waiting room very angry. “What the hell happened to Ryo?” Berkeley demanded.
“Shh! Lets talk outside,” Dee whispered. JJ. had fallen asleep and Dee didn't want to wake him. He slid his arm out from behind JJ. and motioned to the door. Berkeley reluctantly followed Dee out of the room. As soon as the men were by themselves, Berkeley repeated his earlier question.
“What happened to Ryo?”
Sensing Berkeley's anger, Dee decided to sum the situation up as much to the point as possible. “He offered himself up as hostage and told JJ. to take Takashi down no matter what.”
“You mean your little boyfriend shot him?!” Berkeley roared.
“Yes, but he was following Randy's orders and it wasn't his fault!” Dee shouted back.
A passing nurse noticed the two men fighting and commented in a prim tone, “Gentlemen, if you can't talk in `inside' voices, then you can show yourselves out,” pointing towards the exit.
“We're sorry,” Dee apologized quickly.
The nurse shot the two one last glare and walked off.
“Do we know anything of Ryo's condition?” Berkeley asked, still angry but managing to control his emotions.
“No, he's been in surgery for over an hour and a half. They rushed him in as soon as he got here.” Dee replied.
Berkeley started to walk off.
“Where are you going?” Dee asked.
“To find out some information,” Berkeley said sharply and continued on his way. Dee just shrugged his shoulders and returned to the waiting room.
*****
It had felt to Dee that he had just sat down with JJ., who was still asleep when Berkeley returned to the waiting room.
“Did you find out anything?” Dee questioned Berkeley.
“Only that Ryo is in surgery because the bullet didn't go straight through his body.” Berkeley sat down in a chair across from Dee and JJ. “They are trying to remove it without hitting any vital organs. So far there have been no complications.”
“So far? What does that mean?”
“I have no idea. That's just what the doctor said.” Berkeley stated, shifting in his seat.
Dee noticed that Berkeley seemed uncomfortable. He could understand Berkeley being stressed, for his boyfriend is in a life and death situation or being angry, for JJ. shot his lover but he could not understand Berkeley's uneasiness.
“Well, I have to go back to work. Let me know if anything changes,” Berkeley said abruptly. He stood up and headed towards the door.
“What?! You're not going to wait for Randy to get out of surgery! I'm sure he would want you to!” Dee said in a louder voice, amazed that Berkeley would not stay to see what happened to Ryo. If it was JJ. in Ryo's position, Dee knew that he would wait.
“Unlike some people, I have work to do.” With that as his final comment, Berkeley left the waiting room. Dee just shook his head, astonished at Berkeley's attitude and the fact that Ryo deserved so much more than that from his lover. Dee had only known Ryo for a few days but already he could tell that he was a wonderful person who cared and believed in everyone. Berkeley didn't deserve him, not at all.
“Dee?” JJ. asked. He had finally woken up to see his lover staring off into space. “Are you alright?”
“Huh? Yeah I'm fine.” Dee answered. “So Berkeley was here.”
“Where is he now? Does he know anything about Randy?” JJ. questionned anxiously.
“He left. Randy's in surger…” Dee was cut off in mid-sentence by an announcement asking for a Detective Laytner and Adams to come to the ER's front desk. JJ. and Dee looked at each other and quickly stood up, leaving the waiting room to go to the front desk. They were then directed towards the operation recovery rooms where they met Dr. Jacobs.
“Is he alright?” JJ. blurted out as soon as the introductions were made.
“Yes, he'll be fine.” Dr. Jacobs replied. “We were able to remove the bullet without any harm. Unfortunately due to the deep penetration of the bullet, Mr. MacLean had to have extensive surgery to the region of his left shoulder, which will temporarily reduce mobility in that area. Mr. MacLean also suffered from a slight concussion or a result from his fall onto the pavement along with a severely bruised tailbone.”
“How long will he have to stay at the hospital?” Dee asked.
“Just a couple days for observation and then he can go home, provided someone will be there?” Dr. Jacobs looked at Dee questioningly. Dee just nodded. “Some physical therapy might need to be arranged as well”. Dr. Jacobs added to his previous statement. “He will be awake in about an hour. Don't be surprised if he acts disorientated, after all his body has been through quite a shock.”
Dee and JJ. started for the door to Ryo's room.
“Oh and detectives, only one visitor at a time” Dr. Jacobs said firmly before leaving.
Dee and JJ. looked at each other. “You first,” JJ. quickly inserted, unsure of whether he could face Ryo after what he did.
“Okay, how about you phone Berkeley and let him know what's up?” Dee responded, understanding JJ.'s reluctance to see Ryo.
JJ. nodded and headed towards the payphones. Taking a deep breath, Dee entered Ryo's room. Ryo was lying on the bed, looking deathly pale. He had an IV tube connected to his wrist along with a cuff to monitor his heart rate. A bandage was wrapped around his head and his arm was in a sling in order to decrease motion. After all the trauma his body had been through, Ryo looked peaceful as he slept, as if nothing has ever happened. Dee sat down in a chair next to the bed. He took Ryo's hand, rubbing it gently and then sandwiched it between his two hands. He leaned on the bed on his elbows and began to wait for when Ryo would wake up.
*****
“Hello, this is Detective Adams calling. May I please speak to Commissioner Rose?” JJ. asked politely.
“One moment please,” the officer replied and JJ. was put on hold. I really don't want to talk to Berkeley, JJ. thought to himself, after all he's going to be so pissed because I hurt Ryo.
“It's Commissioner Rose.” Berkeley came onto the phone, sounding slightly out of breath.
“Hi sir, this is Detective Adams. Randy is out of surgery,” JJ. explained formally. “He hasn't woken up yet but according to the doctor, he's going to be alright.
“I'll be down in a couple hours.” With that response, Berkeley hung up.
JJ. stared at the phone in his hands, thankful that Berkeley let him off easy on the phone, but surprised that Berkeley wasn't going to come to the hospital right away. “Oh well,” JJ. thought to himself as he wandered back to Ryo's room. “It's none of my business.”
*****
Ryo moaned softly as he came to. He slowly opened his eyes, taking in his surroundings. His eyes fell on Dee who was sitting next to him. Dee was holding his hand and was fast asleep, head on the bed. Ryo placed his hand on Dee's head, ruffling through his thick hair, thankful that Dee cared enough to stay with him.
“Dee?” Ryo asked quietly.
“Huh? What?” Dee replied foggily, not fully awake or comprehending the situation. He sat up quickly after realizing that Ryo was conscious and retook Ryo's hand. “How long have you been up? Are you feeling okay?”
“Hai, I'm fine.” Ryo said weakly. “I feel a little stiff and I have a pounding headache, but overall I guess I'm lucky.” He tightened his hold on Dee. “Thanks for staying with me.”
“No problem Randy, no problem at all.”
“Did you guys catch Takashi?” Ryo asked hopefully.
“No, we didn't.” Dee felt Ryo tense up after hearing the news. “I'm sorry Randy.”
“It's okay, Dee. It's not your fault. Has Berkeley been by at all?”
“Yeah, he stopped to see how you were doing but then he had to leave to take care of some stuff.” Dee replied.
“Oh,” Ryo replied sadly. He had hoped that Berkeley would have waited just like Dee did. “I'm feeling kinda tired, Dee.”
“Oh, I can leave if you want to get some sleep.” Dee suggested, thinking that Ryo wanted him to leave.
“No! Don't leave!” Ryo quickly blurted out. He didn't want to be by himself. “Will you…will you stay with me while I rest?”
“Sure,” Dee replied, “I'll stay until you want me to leave.” He repositioned himself on the chair.
“Thanks Dee,” Ryo murmured, as he began to fall asleep. Ryo's last thought before surrendering to the blackness was “I wish Berkeley would have stayed with me like Dee did.”
*****
The next time Ryo woke up it was because of loud voices in the hallway. It sounded as though JJ. and another man were arguing. As Ryo listened closer, he realized who the other voice belonged to.
“Dee?” Ryo asked, trying to get Dee's attention quickly. “I have to tell you something very important but you have to promise not to tell anyone else.”
“I promise.” Dee replied, startled by the seriousness in Ryo's voice.
Ryo motioned for Dee to come closer. “Keep a close eye on JJ.” Ryo whispered.
“Huh? What do you mean Randy? From who?” Dee asked, becoming increasingly worried.
“Because I was hurt, Berk…”
At that very moment, Berkeley entered Ryo's room. Ryo shut up instantly, letting go of Dee's hand as soon as possible. Dee, noticing Ryo's reaction to Berkeley's entrance, quickly connected the dots. Ryo was trying to warn him that Berkeley might hurt JJ. because JJ. shot him. He knew that Berkeley wasn't the ideal example of a human being but he didn't think that Berkeley would hurt JJ. He also didn't think that Ryo would be with a man that acted that way. Maybe he had overestimated Ryo.
“Ryo! How are you doing?” Berkeley asked Ryo, bending over to give him a kiss.
“I'll leave and let you two be alone.” Dee commented, exiting the room. He didn't want to witness the two's love scene and he also wanted to keep an eye on JJ. in case Ryo's fear was valid.
“I'm doing okay, koibito.” That was all Ryo was able to say before Berkeley started into him.
“What the hell did you think you were doing!” Berkeley shouted at Ryo. “Why did you put yourself into Takashi's hands! Especially with your past with him!”
“I had to! Bikky and the others were in danger!” Ryo defended his actions.
“So you decided that you could `save' them by pretending to be a hero! That was stupid Ryo, stupid!”
“But Berkeley, I…” Ryo faded off, not knowing what to say.
“You what? Weren't man enough? If you couldn't handle a hostage situation involving kids, you could have backed out. But no, you couldn't admit your weakness.” Berkeley said with disdain.
“Koibito, please…” Ryo stammered. `Just listen to me!” But Berkeley wasn't going to stop.
“And then I walk into this room to see you holding hands with another man!” Berkeley roared.
“At least Dee stayed with me.” Ryo inserted stubbornly. “He stayed when my lover had more important things to be doing.”
The sound of flesh hitting flesh was heard ringing throughout the room. Ryo laid on the bed, his hand covering the red mark that had been left on his face. His eyes were focused at the end of his bed, ashamed to look into Berkeley's eyes.
“Don't ever insinuate that you're not important to me.” Berkeley said in anger. “Just to let you know, I didn't stay with you because I was too busy trying to fix the mess that you made. They wanted to suspend you for what you did today and I had to scramble around to get you off the hook. And you thank me like this. Am I worth so little to you?!”
“Berkeley, I'm sorry. I didn't know!” Ryo cried out, tears running down his face. “Please, don't be angry at me, aishiteru koibito, Aishiteru!” Ryo reached out to grab Berkeley's hand but he dodged Ryo's attempt.
“We'll talk about this later, Ryo.” Berkeley said coldly and left the room.
“Gomen nasai, gomen.” Ryo whispered, while continuing to sob into his pillow. It was all my fault, Ryo thought to himself as he cried himself to sleep, all my fault.
