Trial By Fire
Chapter 7

The next morning they entered the kitchen, dressed in the clothes from the night before.

“Well morning, sunshines,” Diana greeted cheerfully. Her eyes twinkled.

Ryo mumbled something with his head down while Dee grumbled a sleepy hello as he went to pour them coffee. Dee sat down next to Ryo, placing a mug in front of him, while Dee was already drinking his.

“Thanks, Dee,” Ryo said tiredly.

Dee merely grunted as he had another sip of coffee.

Diana watched them in amusement. They looked up when she cleared her throat. “Does this coffee count?” she asked them.

Ryo blushed again while Dee shook his head chuckling. “Aw shit,” he heard him mutter. “Yeah. I would say this definitely counts.”

Ryo nearly spit out his coffee. “You're so bad,” he murmured toward Dee, somehow making it sound like an endearment.

Dee peered over to Ryo with one eye. “Just me?”

“Well.” Ryo looked down.

“You know, boys, I'm glad Ryo is taking up my advice and all, but I can see he really took to heart the humping bunnies especially.”

“Diana,” Dee sighed into his coffee. Ryo remained quiet, red-faced, as usual.

She noticed Ryo daring a glance over at Dee. “I tried hard not to listen. I really did try. But there were times when it was hard not to listen.”

Ryo's blush got worse if possible. Dee continued to sip his coffee, mug up to his mouth and eyes on Ryo.

“I knew it was a bad idea,” Dee muttered into his mug.

“Uh huh,” Ryo agreed.

“So,” Diana continued, enjoying watching both men squirm. She did not think Ryo could get any more red. He was blushing to the roots of his hair and on his ears. Dee was holding up, barely. She wondered if she could push him. He had such an exquisite shade with that exotic skin tone of his. “I tried to make a game. Which sex voice belonged to whom? Hard to figure out through the walls.”

“Shit,” was all that came from Ryo, the word spoken softly as he tried to concentrate on his coffee.

She turned to Dee. “Knowing you as the big mouth obnoxious type, I'm guessing the same holds true during your intimate moments. The really loud one has to be you.”

Dee laughed into his coffee, almost spitting it out while Ryo turned a darker shade of red. Dee had to put his cup down before he dropped it, he was laughing so hard. He pointed to Ryo with an impish grin, his green eyes sparkling.

“Really?” Diana asked, her look going from Dee to Ryo. “Ryo, was that you?”

“Hmmm, well…”

Dee nodded gleefully, obviously having too much fun with the moment. “He's the culprit.” He lifted his cup and drank more of his coffee.

“Interesting.” Diana fixed her blue eyed gaze on Dee. “I never took you for the quiet type in bed.”

Dee set his mug on the table and grinned up at her. “Yeah, I am.” His grin grew. “But I make up for it in actions.”

Ryo broke out in laughter. Diana shook her head. Dee was back in control again. “Which is probably why Ryo's quite loud, huh?” she asked.

“Dee's not that quiet,” Ryo blurted, surprising himself. “Sometimes he talks too much.” He fixed Dee with a stare.

“Oh my! I'm getting more than I wanted.” She gazed back to the dark haired man who suddenly slipped back to that edge with Ryo's accusation. “You're not the type to ask about the weather while….?”

“I'm not that bad!” Dee cried out, indignantly. “Damn, can't a guy tell the man he loves just how much? I just make sure Ryo knows we're making love when I get more primal about things.”

“That a complaint, Laytner?” Ryo asked, winking a Diana. She gazed at him in wonder.

“Yeah. All you do is grunt, groan and cry out when you get in primal mode,” Dee retorted.

Ryo leaned close to Dee, slipping an arm around his lover's neck, fingers gently twisting strands of Dee's dark hair. “You rather I talked back?” he asked. “Are you suggesting we stop what we're doing and have a conversation?” When Dee shook his head, turning it slightly to stare at Ryo in amusement, Ryo leaned closer until his breath caressed Dee's ear. “Good, because what you do to me makes me forget my name.” He kissed Dee's ear. In husky whisper he said, “I'm glad you remind me when you come.”

“Oh my God!” Diana exclaimed as Ryo leaned over to kiss Dee's heated cheek. “How do you do it? Every time I tried, he kept managing to slip away from me.”

Ryo laughed, hugging Dee. “I love you so much,” he exclaimed joyfully. “Adorable. I have to stop doing that to you in the morning.” He laughed more.

“I'm dreaming,” Dee remarked, turning his head to kiss Ryo. “And you say I'm bad?”

“Hmmm?”

“I can't believe we're both sitting here with Diana, talking about this. Especially you!”

Ryo gave Dee a quick kiss on his lips. “Don't forget you're sitting there with that exotic blend of coloring. Besides, Diana did not hear a word I said.” He winked, picking up his coffee.

“Don't say it, Ryo. Because your face is changing color and it's telling me if you say it, we're never get to the station early to file those reports,” Dee warned. “And we'd probably also embarrass ourselves in front of Diana.”

“Got a point there. But I'm sure Diana would be dragging us both out by our collars before that happened.”

“Damn right,” Diana stated, smiling. She could not help feeling happy for the two. Warmth filled her as she watched how Ryo became so relaxed around her with Dee, knowing how much the normally shy brunet trusted her. “Now get a move on, you two. I'll see you at seven tonight, unless something comes up.”

“Later Diana,” Dee said, standing up. He waited for Ryo. Ryo went around to give her a kiss on her cheek, which she returned.

“Hey watch it there. Too close to the mouths,” Dee pouted.

“I don't stand a chance, Dee, even if I was that interested in him. He's yours. Take him.” She shoved Ryo off with a push.

“Gladly.” Dee grabbed Ryo by his arm and pulled him out the door.

“We'll see you later tonight, Diana,” Ryo called out, laughing.

“Later,” came from Dee.

She watched as they walked down the hallway toward the staircase. She heard Dee's voice grumble, “Send us to work without any breakfast. Bah!”

Ryo's answering laughter echoed down with him.

Diana smiled. They made such a beautiful couple. There was so much love between the two that she knew without even hearing it from them that they were in it for life.

Her smile faded some and turned sad. Now if only she could have Dee's luck with the man she was waiting for. And if she got him, she could only hope her relationship was at least half as beautiful as the two men that just left her apartment. If she got even that much, she'd be a very lucky woman.

She went back into the apartment and locked the door, getting to work on pulling together whatever the other teams had for them to hand over to Ryo and Dee later.

-- -- --

Dee looked up from Ryo's computer toward the door when he heard a knock. “Come in,” he called out and watched as Ted entered the office.

“You're here early considering you've got the late shift this week,” Ted greeted.

“So do you usually knock first and when there's no answer, you make yourself at home?” Dee asked.

“Whatcha doing?” Ted asked, avoiding Dee's question.

“Researching.” Dee turned from the computer and stood up.

Ted laughed. “I take it JJ didn't see you yet,” he commented.

Dee shook his head. “Do you see my pants still on me and in one piece?” he asked with a laugh. He walked around the desk and leaned against it. “So what do you want?”

“Busted. Checking if the office was empty. So what are you doing here so early?”

“New routine under this undercover assignment is done. A few hours sleep, come in to file reports from the night before, then home for more sleep and time off until we have to be on duty,” Dee replied.

“Just sleep?” Ted asked slyly, his eyes on Dee.

Dee shook his head. “No. But I'm sure Ryo told you that already?”

“Where is Ryo?” Ted asked, realizing he was not going to get another rise out of Dee.

“Ryo told him what already?” came from the door. When the two men in the office looked up, they saw Ryo saunter into the office, coffee carafe filled with water.

“Ryo was getting water for our coffee,” Dee replied.

“Ryo told what?” Ryo demanded, going over the small file cabinet in a corner where they kept a coffee maker and pouring the water.

Dee smirked as he glanced in Ryo's direction. “You telling Ted about how we're getting less sleep these days. Ted wanted to know if we were only sleeping, as if he didn't know.”

Ryo ducked his head at the implication, knowing he had no one else to blame but himself. Of course now that Dee was in a room with someone who knew the truth, he was not going to get shy about it. This was another step he had to take in the lifestyle he had chosen for himself. Ted knew. Ryo had to get past his normal reactions when there weren't others around who did not know the truth, just as he was around Diana.

“Shit Ryo!” Ted laughed. “How the hell did you pour into those jeans?”

“Exactly,” Ryo agreed emphatically. “It's not easy and I know why I don't normally wear this type,” Ryo replied. He turned to catch the glaze in Dee's eyes, who was watching him bend over the coffee maker. “Though I might consider it once in a while. A little pain is always fun when it means much pleasure.” He winked at Dee.

“Ryo!” Ted sputtered.

Dee turned away, but Ryo saw enough to laugh and he ducked his own head.

“Ryo,” he heard Dee laugh. “You made Ted blush!” Dee was leaning against the desk, holding his stomach and laughing.

“I think I made all three of us blush,” Ryo remarked ruefully. He dared to face the other two in the office, his cheeks still heated. He let out a sigh. “I don't know what gets into me sometimes, but I first started to have these nasty little thoughts in my head. Now I'm afraid they slip out of my mouth sometimes.”

Dee groaned. “I have a good idea what got into you.” He gave Ryo a knowing wink.

Ryo blushed further and nodded his head. “Exactly what I tell myself.”

“Naughty Ryo,” Dee said slyly, licking his lips.

“Enough, you two!” Ted exclaimed, holding up his hands. “Damn, Dee. What did you do to our shy Ryo? And you! You were never this bad, if I remember.” Ted squinted his eyes, as if in thought. “But that was so long ago, it's hard to recall.”

Dee laughed. “It has been a long time. But worth every second of it,” he smiled. The look he gave Ryo this time was pure love, feeling the familiar sweet sensation that filled his entire being every time he realized that Ryo was really his, and he was Ryo's. Sometimes the feeling was so intense that he wanted to weep with joy.

“Aw geez. I've never seen you like that. Lovesick, dopey dog smile. Nauseating,” Ted exclaimed. He turned to Ryo. “And you, Ryo,” he shook his head. “Shocking. As shocking as that outfit you're wearing.”

Ryo looked down at his tight jeans and tight blue tank top, then looked over to Dee, who was eyeing him appreciatively. “You think maybe it's the clothes?” he asked innocently. Perhaps a tad too innocent, even for Ryo.

Dee and Ted burst out in laughter. “I don't know what it is, but I can get used to it,” Dee stated.

“I won't,” Ted exclaimed. “I can't believe I'm standing here listening to you two right now.”

“I can't believe it myself,” Dee said sincerely.

“Stop it!” Ted warned him.

Dee laughed.

“We're not that bad right now,” Ryo defended, folding his arms, hitching a hip against a small space of the wall that did not have file cabinets or shelves to hold books.

“Despite how he's been acting this morning,” Dee said, “Ryo's not at the point when we can be the worst.”

“Thank you, Ryo,” Ted sighed, shaking his head.

Ryo joined Dee in laughing at Ted's statement. “By the way, Ryo, did you stop by Chief's office?” Dee asked.

Ryo nodded his head and stuck a finger into the tight opening of his jeans pocket. He had to work the finger into the pocket. Dee was staring mesmerized, the implications running through his head. Not realizing what he was doing to his partner's libido, Ryo worked the object he wanted out and held up at key. “We need to get a copy so each of us has one. From now on, anyone who enters this office without our permission is trespassing. Those are orders coming down from Commissioner Rose.”

“Your own office and now with a key to lock it up,” Ted mused. He turned to Dee. “Ryo I could see, but you? Dee, I never took you for a lap bitch.”

“Shut up,” Dee grumbled.

“I already explained the situation to you, Ted. Don't make me have to repeat it again, because I won't be so nice about it,” Ryo frowned.

“Yeah, yeah, I know. Confidential and all. Sheesh!” His eyes landed on Dee again.

“One of the perks of being Ryo's partner. You think I earned this on my own?” Dee folded his arms and smirked. “Well, this lap bitch knows something you don't,” he teased.

Ryo laughed. “Don't, Dee. They'll know in a week.”

“Doesn't mean I can't torture them until then,” Dee remarked.

“What?” Ted insisted.

“You'll find out,” Dee said in that annoying, grating way he had.

“C'mon, what happens in a week?” Ted persisted, curiosity sparked by Dee's teasing. “You guys get promoted to Inspector or something?” he teased.

Dee laughed. “I could see that happening in the next century or so. Well, for me, that is. Much sooner for Ryo. But no, that's not it. Not even close.”

“Then wh---“

“DEE! OH MR. PERFECT!!!”

“Ack!” Dee yelped, attempting to scramble over Ryo's desk.

He never had a chance as JJ blazed into the office and slammed into Dee, knocking him backward onto the surface of Ryo's desk while JJ straddled Dee.

“Leather! Oh my Mr. Wonderful! My Adonis devil in black leather.”

Dee was frantically punching at JJ, trying to grab him, attempting to roll away, but he was pinned down. “HELP!” Dee cried out. “God dammit, JJ. Get off me!”

Suddenly Dee felt JJ being pulled off and he sat up, ready to strike should JJ make another attempt. Ryo was holding him by the collar of his shirt. As Dee settled himself from his precarious balance, he noticed Ryo staring at him.

“Tell him, Dee,” Ryo said quietly.

“Let go of me, Ryo. You big bully. You brute in skin-tight denim!”

Both Dee's and Ryo's eyes went wide. “Don't listen to him, Ryo,” Dee warned. “He suspects something and he's taking a new tactic to get me.”

Ryo frowned down at the shorter man he still held. “Somehow that's believable.”

“Suspects what?” JJ snapped.

Dee's eyes met Ryo's, and Ryo shook JJ. Ryo turned to Ted. “Do you mind leaving us for a few?”

“Uh, sure Ryo,” Ted said uncertainly, his eyes going between Ryo and Dee and then resting sympathetically on JJ. “Be gentle with him.”

“Close the door.”

“Of course.”

Dee folded his arms. The gesture was not the usual one to accompany Dee's arrogant stance. This time it was definitely a sign of protecting his personal space, though he looked no less arrogant, his green eyes fired up.

“Listen to me, JJ. This is the only time I'm going to tell you this. Stop sign, JJ. No. No, JJ. I don't want you, I don't desire you, I don't want to pity fuck you. No. I don't want to be touched by you, jumped, pawed, body slammed or anything else. I don't want it. Stop it. Don't touch me, don't try to grab me, don't try to touch my crotch. I'm being serious. I'm giving you the official stop sign. Stay away from me unless it's business. Because the next time you try, I'll give my better half free license to try to knock some sense into your head. And if that doesn't I will file a harassment charge against you. Do you understand?”

“What brought this on?”

“Other than the two years of constant abuse every time you charge at me?” Dee said then shook his head. “I never liked it. Even back in the Academy. Why do you think I moved when I graduated? To get the hell away from you! That's why. But there's more than me to consider.”

JJ's eyes narrowed as Dee's went to Ryo. “You're turn,” Dee stated.

“Dee's settled down in a relationship now, and his partner is not too thrilled about seeing someone else paw him like you do. Dee decided to put out the stop sign to give you the option to just stop.”

JJ lifted his head slowly and gazed up at Ryo's tight face. “Should I ask who that is?” he asked nervously.

“I think you need to hear it,” Ryo replied, “so you don't come back to us later saying you mistook what was said here. The chase is over, JJ. Dee had something in his chase after me that you never had in yours with him. I did love Dee and I realized there was no reason to fight what was obvious any longer. Dee and I are together now. We're happy. And we're monogamous. He doesn't like seeing others come on to me, and I don't like seeing others do the same to him. Which means you're going to piss me off really badly if I catch you going after him again as you have been. Game's over for everyone.” He released his hold on JJ's collar.

“We're giving you a chance, JJ. We're asking you nicely,” Dee said, unusually calm considering the circumstances. It was the look in Ryo's eyes that gave him the calm. “I don't hate you, JJ. You are a good detective. So don't make me have to put you on report. Because that type of report has no tolerance. You'll be out of the force. So reign yourself in and find it in yourself to be our friend. Okay?”

JJ shrugged. “But Dee, love of my life, I lo---“

Dee held up his hand. “Don't say it, JJ. It won't make me change my mind, or my heart. I love Ryo. Only Ryo.” He gave JJ a lopsided smile. “Besides, I think you're getting love and lust confused. Think about it, and one day you'll find someone that you will actually love and not lust after.”

“Sure.” He turned for the door. “I'll stay away from both of you unless it's for duty.” He started to walk over to the door.

“JJ,” Ryo called out.

“What?” JJ asked, hanging his head.

“We told you because you deserved to know. But we're just not sure who else to tell about us. So I would appreciate it if you keep your mouth shut.”

“But there are rumors already,” JJ gasped, turning back to them. “I've heard them.”

“So you suspected, then?” Dee asked, annoyed.

“Well, most of the others don't believe it, but I know you both better than almost all of them, so it was possible. I wasn't sure until now. Actually I was coming in to get you to deny those rumors.”

“I'd prefer if they stay just rumors,” Dee stated.

“I wonder who started those rumors in the first place,” Ryo mused, a hard edge to his voice.

JJ's eyes went wide. “I didn't mean it that way,” he blurted out, running over to Ryo and grabbing him by his arm as he fell to his knees. “Honestly Ryo. I never said that you and Dee were getting it on.”

“Then what did you say?” Ryo snapped.

“J-just that you took Dee away from me. That if he wasn't so occupied with getting you to notice him, I would stand a chance.”

“Then as all things go around in a place like this,” Dee summed up calmly, “things get twisted and now we have people talking about me and Ryo as lovers.”

“But you are!”

“Yes. But we don't want everyone to know, you idiot!” Ryo growled. “We were thinking of telling those close to us, but that was it.”

“Don't you want to announce that you have Mr. Perfect for yourself?”

“Yes. When I know that Dee and I can remain partners in everything, including work.”

“Oh. I'm sorry, Ryo. Dee, I swear I never meant any harm. I was just upset and Reynolds seemed a sympathetic ear.”

“Reynolds?” Dee asked, frowning to recall the name.

“Phil Reynolds,” Ryo replied. “Tall, dark, dark hair, gray eyes.” At Dee's amazed look, Ryo smiled. “Figures. Close, but he's nowhere near as sexy and attractive as you. I guess Phil is JJ's Mr. Almost-Perfect.”

“Ah,” Dee nodded, amused. “I see. Well, don't go telling Mr. Perfect what we told you.”

“Sure, Dee. Anything for you. I'll still do anything for you. Name it.”

“Get lost!” Ryo grumped, his eyes darkening.

Dee pointed to Ryo. “What he said.”

JJ nodded and charged out of their office.

As the door closed, Dee fell back against Ryo's desk and let out a sigh. “Damn, that was hard.” He let out a chuckle, then gazed over to Ryo. “But I have to admit, you made a damn great bad cop. An extremely sexy bad cop.”

“Stop batting your lashes at me, Dee,” Ryo laughed.

“You were enjoying yourself,” Dee accused, sitting up again. He reached over for something on the side of Ryo's desk then got up to slip behind his own.

“It was JJ, Dee. What do you think?”

“I think we could switch playing good cop/bad cop and throw the perp off.” Dee opened his desk drawer and took something out, placing it with the item he took from Ryo's desk.

“What are you up to, Dee?” Ryo asked, sitting on the edge of Dee's desk.

Dee smiled up at him as he took out a cigarette and lit it. “Coffee's ready. Please, love?” he asked sweetly as he inhaled his cigarette.

“Okay,” Ryo said warily.

“Sexy bad cop,” Dee repeated, his eyes on Ryo's molded ass in those tight jeans. “Those jeans look better in the light.”

“So do those leather pants,” Ryo replied pouring coffee for the two of them.

“You are sexy.”

“Dee…”

“And you're looking so bad in that outfit.”

Ryo put Dee's coffee mug before him. “Stop it.”

“Did you like playing the bad cop?” he asked, taking another drag of his cigarette, inhaling and gently releasing the smoke.

Ryo shrugged. “I could get into it sometimes.”

“I think you could,” Dee said softly. His burning green eyes looked up at met smoldering dark ones. “My bad cop. I could be bad too.”

Ryo flushed as he took a sip of his coffee. “Dee….”

“Something to think about. Maybe a celebration when we crack this case?”

Ryo's head nodded as he took another drink of coffee, his eyes meeting Dee's. Dee smiled around the cigarette hanging from his lips. “Naughty Ryo.”

Ryo's face got darker.

Dee smiled. “At least you still blush. Until you get caught up in the moment.”

Ryo shook his head. “I must have been caught up in several moments this morning for me to say what I've been saying without feeling much of the familiar heat in my face.”

Dee laughed. “You know,” he said, slowly drawing in another lazy drag of his cigarette, “I could start calling you by your real name again. It does seem fitting. Randy. Naughty, Randy Ryo.”

“Hey!” Ryo blushed to his ear tips, but let out a laugh. “Stop it, Dee!”

“Nah. Randy is for strangers. I like Ryo. Naughty Ryo.” He smiled up again at Ryo.

“Randy is for strangers?” Ryo asked and shook his head. “I don't like how that sounds. More like what Diana wanted one of us to act for this assignment.”

Dee frowned. “Yeah, you're right. Still, I like Naughty Ryo.”

Ryo leaned forward on Dee's desk, placing his coffee cup down. “Demon Dee.”

Dee's eyes widened, then he licked his lips. “I think I like that. Demon Dee and Naughty Ryo.

Ryo laughed. “A winning combination, if you ask me,” he said as he leaned over further to meet Dee's mouth for a kiss. He pulled away before they got too carried away. “Now what are you up to?”

“Stand up. Look bad again.”

“Wha?”

“Please?”

Ryo heaved a huge put upon sigh and stood.

“One hand on the hip. Yeah. Delicious. I want to take a picture of Naughty Ryo.” Dee lifted a small digital camera he kept in his desk for when they went out to scenes. He also picked up another item from Ryo's desk, throwing Ryo the ball cap Bikky had left at the office one day. “Put it on.”

Ryo smiled. “I just went from bad cop to male model?” he asked.

“I want some pictures for me. Me only.”

Ryo found he could not refuse Dee and placed the ball cap on his head backwards the way Bikky would usually wear it.

“Hot, hot, hot!” Dee exclaimed, taking pictures while Ryo posed. Dee had moved to sit on his desk. “Hey, try this.” He pulled a cigarette out from his pack and tossed it to Ryo. “Omigod! That's hot, Ryo. Naughty Ryo.”

Ryo laughed, the unlit cigarette falling from his mouth and took a step toward the desk to sit on it again. “Okay enough. We still have work to finish from last night before we can officially call it day. We have eleven hours before we're supposed to be on duty again.”

“Like I'm having trouble reporting for duty these days,” Dee chuckled. “I'm almost done here anyway.” He got back into his seat and caught the cigarette Ryo picked up and tossed to him. He put it in his mouth, smiling as he realized the filter was wet. Not knowing how to hold a cigarette in his mouth, Ryo had slobbered all over it. Dee found it sexy, craving a long deep kiss from his partner. Lighting the cigarette, he looked up at Ryo, who was sitting at his desk and writing some notes. He looked over to his computer monitor on what Dee left up, and took out his notebook, starting to write more notes.

Dee smiled, putting the cigarette in the ashtray and picking up a pen. He took another sip of coffee, finding it easy to concentrate on his work. The sooner they were done, the sooner they could get to Ryo's apartment and the sooner they could….. Dee's smile got wider as he worked.
