"Kiba! Kiba! The Lord has returned!" one of the wolf demon's called as he ran to inform everyone.
"What! Show him to me." Kiba ordered as he followed the wolf back to the castle gates. They had all been on guard and on edge since Brittany had arrived. For an hour straight they had surveyed the grounds for any sign of attack. When they reached the castle gates Alex was already walking towards his room in a long stride. He stopped as soon as Brittany came down the stairs and hugged him.
"Alex! Your okay! What happened, did you help those people?" Brittany asked. It was only when Alex pushed her away from him that she realized she was covered in his blood. "My God...Alex!"
"I'm fine its nothing to worry about." Alex said in an emotionless voice."The Clerics healed me. Kiba, make sure they are well attended to. There...is a lot I must attend to now."
"But...what happened? Alex, what's wrong?" Brittany asked as she grabbed his hand and looked at him in the eyes. It was then that she noticed the far away, glassy look in his eyes.
"My Lord, was it truly them?" Kiba asked as he started up the stairs. He knew the answer to the question before he asked, but still he needed to hear it for himself.
"Brittany, go make sure the Clerics are comfortable I need to contact the other lords." Alex said solemnly as he actually looked at Brittany. "If I had only known."
"Alex what happened? Why are you acting like this?" Brittany asked becoming more concerned for him.
"The wraiths have returned and now, the only two people able to defeat them have both vanished from this world." Alex replied as he moved past her and walked into his room. Brittany starred open mouthed in shock as she watched Alex leave. She turned back to Kiba, her eyes full of questions.
"Lass, I believe right now it would be best to attend to the Clerics." Kiba said softly.
"No, not until you or somebody else tells me what's so damn special about these wraiths! Why in the hell does Alex look as if he met death himself?" Brittany yelled. Kiba cringed at Brittany's outburst but finally conceded.
"Fine, lass if you want to know that badly then I shall tell you. Come, this is a story that requires time to tell." Kiba said as he turned around and motioned with his hand for Brittany to follow him. He led her to the study where he pulled a chair for her to sit in as he leaned on the large oak desk. As soon as Brittany sat down Kiba began the story. "Now, for you to fully understand this I need to go over the history of the demon realm."
"As long as you tell me what those wraiths are, and why they have everyone so spooked, then okay." Brittany replied as she leaned forward with interest.
"Aye, I will get to that child." Kiba assured. "Now, to begin this tale I must tell you of the original demon lord."
"The original demon lord?" Brittany asked, already confused.
"Yes, now don't interrupt." Kiba replied quickly. "You will have less questions if you let me finish the story first."
"Oh, sorry. Please continue." Brittany said politely.
"The original demon lord was truly a devil among demons. He was a good ruler yes, but he had an omnipotent demonic presence. By now you can probably tell that all demons are associated with animals in some way or another. The original demon lord was the only one who has no animalistic qualities. No one dared defy him, that was how great his power was. The crystals the demon lords now have originally belonged to the original demon lord. He had four crystals of incredible power, with which he fused to himself. These crystals were gifts bestowed upon him by the archmage Alcadan.
The original demon lord had the four realms united. He brought peace to the land amongst all the beings, all except for Scion. He was a dark sorcerer, actually he was the only dark sorcerer. At one time, he was but one of a large cult trying to overthrow the demon lord. When the Lord found out about this, he killed all the members, but Scion escaped. Scion was very powerful, in fact, his power rivaled that of the demon lord's and of Alcadan's. Not knowing that Scion had survived the kingdom lived in ignorant peace for quite sometime, that is, until the wraiths attacked.
During the times of peace Scion had become even more powerful, and mastered the art of necromancy. Using this skill, and various other incantations he fused the souls of countless demons into one spectere given life by magic. Wraiths are stronger than any demon, and cannot die at least, not normally. Three wraiths could destroy an entire village. It was because of this that the Lord called forth the armies of the four realms, the elves, the mages, and the clerics to help fight Scion. The wraiths plagued the land, and it would not be long before Scion would rule it all, his success was nearly complete. The only two standing in his way were the Lord, and Alcadan. For Alcadan had learned a spell which would weaken the wraiths, allowing them to be killled.
When the battle came Alcadan used his spell, which nearly drained all his magic. The armies and wraiths collided, and in the chaos the Lord of the demon realm, and Scion...the proclaimed Lord of Darkness clashed. It was a bloody fight, but eventually the Lord of the demon realm won, but even then he could not rest. Even though he was badly wounded and the Lord of Darkness had placed a powerful curse on him, the Lord continued to fight. When the last wraith was struck down the armies rejoiced believing peace had finally been restored, it was then that they discovered the Lord was dead. Around him were the remnants of a hundred wraiths, the equivalent of over five hundred thousand demons. He died fighting them, he died protecting the kingdom. It was then decided that his four most trusted generals would each take a part of the realm and control it, and with them each one would take one of the Lord's crystals. After that it was only natural for everyone to assume the wraiths were gone for good, only Scion knew how to create them and none had left that battle alive. It is for that reason the the Lord is so shocked by all this, also by fighting them he has faced the fact of how weak he truly is. Up until now, he's been strong even when facing the other Lord's, but fighting a wraith is like fighting death itself. "
"Wow...so the original demon lord fought against Scion, the Lord of Darkness. He won, but lost after fighting the wraiths. Still, he does sound awesome. But one thing confuses me. You said that the Lord had four crystals and they went to each of the new lords, so does Alex have one?" Brittany asked after taking a few minutes to completely understand everything.
"No, the Lord of the south, the original one, did not have one of the crystals. Therefore Alex did not get one when he became the Lord. You see even though the original Lord had fused himself with the crystals only three of them could be found after his death. No one knows what happened to the last one." Kiba said. He stood up and stretched lightly as his ears perked up. "Holly's coming. I'd better go and check on the Clerics and make sure they are okay. You'll probably want to go get cleaned up before you go to meet them."
"What do you mean?" Brittany asked. She had completely forgotten the fact that her dress was covered in Alex's blood. "Oh yeah, duh! I'll go up and change and be right back."
"Make sure lass, that you don't disturb the Lord." Kiba cautioned.
"Oh, I won't." Brittany replied with a coy smile.
"I know you better than that. At least don't anger him child." Kiba said with a smirk."The Lord may let you get away with murder, but disturbing him at a time like this isn't wise."
"I know. I won't be that bad, I promise." Brittany responded with a playful grin. Without further words she stood up quickly and headed towards the stairs. So, wraiths really are something to be afraid of. If the Lord of the demons died fighting them, what chance does Alex have of beating them? Wait...he's alive, so doesn't that mean he won? With that thought Brittany picked up her pace as she quickly rushed into her and Alex's bedroom. As soon as she got in there she could over hear Alex having a heated discussion with someone.
"Listen, I would not lie about this! They are back, wether you want to believe me or not!" Alex yelled.
"Heh, the only one who could create them was Scion. He's dead and all the wraiths were destroyed. We made sure of that at the great battle." a smug voice replied. Brittany instantly recognized it as belonging to Zanatos. She slowly cracked the door to Alex's study and peered in. Alex had taken off his bloody shirt and was only wearing his pants and his boots. He was glaring at what Brittany first thought was a cabinet, but upon closer observation she realized that the center and on each of the doors were glass mirrors. Each one contained one of the demon lord's in it.
"I know that! I was there remember!" Alex replied angrily.
"Hmm, yes I seem to recall you doing something there, but it is of little importance now." Zanatos said with as he waved his hand as if to erase the memories. "Now, unless you have some actual proof that someone has managed to master the arts to recreate the wraiths you can't expect us to believe you."
"I wasn't the only one who saw them. Their were four Clerics too." Alex responded.
"The word of a Cleric matters not to us." Cecilia said with a smirk. "Kane, since when were you in the habit of saving human lives?" The entire council smirked realizing that she had struck a nerve as Alex glared at them angrily.
"What I do in my damn realm, is none of your fucking business." Alex said coldly.
"So, it has nothing to do with that human girl you've become so fond of, the one you marked as your mate?" Cecilia continued.
"No it doesn't! The only reason I marked her was to protect her." Alex said, not backing down.
"That still doesn't explain why you brought her here. Surely there must be something else." Cecilia replied with a devilish grin.
"No. I brought her here for reasons that don't concern you." Alex responded. He still was not backing down to the council's attempts to unnerve him, but Brittany could tell they were hitting closer to the truth than he wanted.
"So, the reason you brought her there was to fuck her I'm assuming." Cecilia revealed her finally trump card as she leaned forward peering at Alex through the glass mirror. "Seeing as how you didn't wait too long to do that."
"Once again, what I do in my castle is none of your fucking business." Alex whispered barely loud enough for the council to hear. With a wave of his hand the cabinet doors closed, shutting out the demon lords from his sight. Alex turned to his desk and slammed his fist down hard on it before turning around and running both his hands through his hair.
"Dammit!" It was then that he noticed Brittany peering through the crack."You might as well come in. What's done is done."
"I'm sorry they found out so soon." Brittany responded softly, trying to quell his anger.
"Don't be. It was bound to happen sooner or later. But it does piss me off that they found out so soon, especially considering what that means." Alex said softly.
"What does it mean?" Brittany asked.
"That one of my servants is a traitor. How else could they have found out something that we did this morning?" Alex replied. "But that doesn't matter. Nothing matters really if the wraiths truly have come back."
"That battle they were talking about, was that the battle where the demon lord died?" Brittany asked slowly.
"So I'm guessing Kiba told you. Yes, it was. Come here." Alex said, leaning against his desk he motioned for Brittany to come to him. Brittany didn't hesitate, she could tell how badly he wanted to be with her, even if he denied it. As soon as she got close enough, she was surprised by the fact that instead of taking her, he simply wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him. "Brittany, if the wraiths truly have come back, I won't be able to protect you. I couldn't even defeat four, much less a hundred. Tomorrow morning I want to train with you. I want to see just what all magic you have learned. Right now I need to be alone, I need to think about some things. I want you to talk to the Clerics, they owe me their lives, and for that they will teach you some spells that you might find useful. Powerful healing spells, barriers, and purification, I also will give you something to study."
"Holly already gave me all the spell books you have." Brittany said as Alex released her slowly and walked over to his book shelf.
"Correction, she gave you all she could find. There is one final book, one that I, myself had forgotten about till today." Alex replied. "Otenu." With those words the book shelf split open revealing an opening in which a thick leather bound book was housed behind a glass case. Alex opened the case and took out the book and walked slowly back to Brittany. "This book contains some of the most powerful spells and incantations known in this realm. This is one of the archmage's personal spell books. Do not let anyone see you with it, not even Kiba. I will keep it here, whenever you want to read it come to my study, lock the door and say the word to open the shelves okay."
"Yes of course." Brittany replied quickly. She could see how serious Alex was and even though she desperately wanted to see what was in that book she restrained herself. Alex nodded as he turned and replaced the book into the case. He closed the shelves back the same way he opened them as he turned back to Brittany.
"Now, go and talk with the Clerics, putting all differences aside they are good people." Alex smirked. "But before you do, lets get you into a new dress shall we."
"That's what I was going to do before I uh...eavesdropped." Brittany admitted as she blushed lightly. Her blush was soon lost as Alex leaned in and kissed her passionately. He moved her lips with his tongue as he gained entry into her mouth. Brittany moaned softly as Alex pulled her closer towards him. Brittany could feel Alex's tension as he kissed her, she knew he needed her as bad as she wanted to be with him yet still he refrained.
"I'll excuse the eavesdropping just this once." Alex said after he finished the kiss. "Now, lets see about that dress."
