"Get away from me!" Brittany yelled as she raised her hands in front of her. "I won't think twice about turning you into a burning pile of ashes. All it would take would be one spell."

The lead demon halted for a second, taken back by Brittany's bluff. "So, you can use magic can you? That's interesting. Only problem with that is the fact that I can sense your fear and doubt." the demon replied as he sniffed the air. "Your lying. You've got nothing. Your fear has betrayed you."

Brittany closed her eyes as she waited for the demon to take hold of her. Knowing that this might be the last, Brittany couldn't help but think one thing. Alex, you said you would always protect me. Was that just a lie too? A tear rolled down Brittany's cheek as she opened her eyes. I'm not going to give up. I'm not going to let them see me weak. True to her character Brittany didn't flinch when the demon grabbed hold of her arm and pulled her close to him. His touch sent shivers down her spine as she mentally wished it was Alex instead of this monster holding on to her.

"Now, you will be mine." the demon whispered as his fangs grew and he went to strike at Brittany. Suddenly the demon stopped as he stared at Brittany with open mouth. "Shit! This can't be happening!" Brittany didn't have time to understand what was going on before the demon that was holding her let out a terrifying scream and crackled with energy. The demon released Brittany as he stumbled backwards before he let out another scream and turned to ashes. The other demons starred at Brittany with horror.

"She's been marked. Dammit, we can't get near her." one of the demons cried as they slowly started to back away. "Her mate must've activated her mark. Judging by the way Lacross went up he must be a powerful one too."

Brittany stared in shock as she looked at her hands. All around her was a red shimmering barrier. My mark...but, this has never happened before. Alex must have activated it. Why...? Surely he doesn't care what happens to me, he made that clear. So why did he?

"Fools. Haven't you heard? The Lord of the southern realm has taken a human from the human realm as his mate. This must be the one they've been talking about. Let's take her to the Lord. I'm sure the Lord would have some use for her." another voice said as a female vampire walked out of the forest. She looked over at Brittany evilly then back at the male vampires.

"But we can't get through there. What about the barrier?" one of the demon's stammered.

"You really are idiots. I'll knock her out. The barrier won't affect me." the female responded in a haughty tone. She then turned around to Brittany and walked over to her. "Now, if you play nice I'll make it quick." She then walked through the barrier and reached for Brittany.

"Touch me bitch and you'll regret it." Brittany replied sharply as she slapped the female demon and tried to make a break for it. However as soon as she turned around the female was already behind her.
"That...was a mistake." the demon responded as she backhanded Brittany knocking her to the ground.

Alex....You made the barrier didn't you. Please, prove me wrong this once. Prove to me that your not the monster I heard today, please. I don't want to believe it. If you were you wouldn't have activated the barrier. Please, tell me you really do care about me. Don't let me die without knowing what I mean to you. Don't let me die without knowing.... Brittany then slipped in and out of consciousness as the female demon roughly picked her up and threw her over her shoulder.

"We should get a good reward from our Lord for turning her in." the demon said with a wicked smile. "If not, I'll make a nice meal out of her."

"So...you didn't do it, did you?" Holly said when Kiba walked out of Alex's room. She could tell by the expression on his face that he had changed his mind. Kiba looked up at her and smiled weakly.

"I told him, if he needed my help, then I would help him." Kiba admitted. He shook his head lightly and looked back at the ground. Holly and Shadow both looked at him as he spoke. Shadow smiled a knowing smile as Kiba said the words that Shadow knew he would. "His eyes...I've never seen them like that before."

"What are you talking about? One minute your angry at him, the next you come out saying you are going to help him! You saw how badly he hurt Brittany, he deserves whatever he gets for that." Holly said angrily.

"I know that you are right to a point. There are a few aspects however that we don't know. We do know what he said to the mages, but just because we were walking by at the time. We don't know however, why he said that." Kiba said slowly, as if he was trying to convince himself as much as Holly that what he was doing was right. "I know how this will sound lass, but I do think he might actually care about her."

"Kiba, that's bullshit and you know it!" Holly snapped. "He lied to her. He led her on and when he finally got caught he broke her heart. How can you forgive him for that?"

"Think about it Holly. Calm down and actually think about it." Shadow said as he walked over to her. He hesitantly wrapped his arms around her and held her out from his so that he could look her in the eyes. "Think about how long we've known our Lord. Think about how he acts, how he's always acted. Do you really think he would change for one person if he didn't care about them!"

"That's not the point! The point is, is that regardless of wether or not he may have any feelings for her the fact is, is that he has something else in plan for her. There's something that he's not telling us. Something that involves her. You can't deny that you can't feel that something is wrong." Holly replied.

"That may be lass. But if he does care about her, truly cares about her. Then I will help him search for her till the ends of the earth. For I know he would do the same for me...he already has once before." Kiba said with a determined look in his eyes. Holly was at a lost for words after seeing Kiba's determined expression. Finally, Shadow spoke for all of them.

"I believe there is more to this girl than what the Lord is telling us. Still, I also believe that he does care about her more than he's letting on to." Shadow said softly, knowing that Holly would not take kindly to this.

"You too Shadow! I thought you were the sensible one." Holly said, sounding upset and hurt that Shadow would take Kiba's side over hers.

"I am the sensible one Holly." Shadow insisted. "The fact is...is that I was at the opposite side of the room, at the other entrance. I overheard everything. That is why I cannot get as mad as you when it comes to the Lord. I believe it was all a trap from the very beginning."

"What do you mean a trap?" Kiba asked. He walked closer to the two as he gazed at Shadow, trying to find out what he knew.

"The mages, or rather Magnus, kept asking the Lord a lot of questions. Pressuring, attacking the Lord's pride and tempting him to strike out. The Lord was already to his last ounce of self control, I could tell that by the way he was talking to Magnus. Rylus said that one of the mages had told him to go get Brittany. Why would they do that unless they had some reason for it? As soon as she was downstairs Magnus switched the conversation over to her. Asking the Lord about her, and what he felt for her. Granted, I'm not condoning what he said, he let his demonic pride and will gain control of him. He said things out of anger at Magnus, not at Brittany." Shadow replied.

"He wouldn't have said those things if he loved her!" Holly said harshly as she broke free of Shadow's grip and looked at him. "Even if the mages set this up, that still didn't give him the right to say what he did. If he truly loved her, he wouldn't have done that."

"If he truly loved her, he wouldn't have said that. If he wanted to protect her, he would." Shadow replied softly. He then turned and left Holly and Kiba with a sad expression on his face. Kiba sighed softly as he looked at the two young wolves.

"Holly, I know that you hate the Lord right now, he's betrayed us all. He's broken the heart of a girl that didn't deserve this pain, but I believe two hearts got broken today. Before you decide you want to kill him, look at him, really look at him. If you see someone who is so heartless that they would let the most precious thing in their life run away and not care, then you have every right to hate him. But if you see a man who has denied his feelings, held back every natural urge, all so that he could protect the one he loved, even go so far as to lie and make her hate him, just so that she wouldn't fall into harms way. If that is the person you see, and you can still hate him, then it is you who is the heartless one lass, not him. I'm honestly not sure who's right or who's wrong in this situation. I've learned to never second guess my instinct, life's more interesting that way. I guess we'll find out in the end." Kiba said as he turned to leave. "Another thing. Before you criticize other people's relationships. You might want to take a closer look at those around you, those who you take for granted. Those you care deeply about you."

Holly was speechless as Kiba left. She had never seen Kiba have so much emotion before. She knew that what was happening struck home to one of Kiba's darkest nightmares, but still never before had he opened himself up so much. But what really took her by surprise, was what Kiba said about those around her. She knew he was talking about Shadow, but she had never even considered that Shadow might have feelings for her. She then remembered the words Alex had once said to her. Before you interfere in my love life, you might want to examine your own. Taking people for granted, especially those who care about you, that sounds just as bad as what you say I'm doing.

"Shadow...I never knew." Holly whispered. She looked towards Alex's room with a determined look in her eyes. Tomorrow I will find out the truth. If you care about her, and you can prove it, then I, like Kiba and Shadow, shall follow you till the ends of the earth. Evidently there are some things concerning love that I do not know. Maybe they are right, evidently they could see what I could not. So for that, I'll give you one more chance.

Brittany slipped in an out of consciousness as she struggled to realize what was happening. She could feel the strong grip of someone holding on tight to her, and she could hear words being exchanged but she couldn't quite make them out. Finally as the haziness began to disperse Brittany was better able to make out what was being said.

"So, you just found her in the woods?" a voice asked sounding suspicious.

"Yes my Lord. She has to be his mate, there's no other explanation." the voice of the female demon that captured Brittany replied. "She's a feisty one, and the mark around her is too strong to belong to any demon around here. Also, who else but him would take a human as their mate?"

"There might be some truth to you words. Still, why would his mate be in my realm? I find it hard to believe that someone as cautious as him would allow her to walk around on her own, much less let her wander here alone." the demon lord replied.

"Some of the other demons reported seeing a flash of light before they found her. Maybe she was sent here by magic." the female demon suggested.

"The mages...now there's an idea. I might have some use for her after all." the demon lord replied. Brittany felt someone grab her jaw and lift her face up. Brittany's vision was still blurred and the darkness of the room didn't help. She couldn't tell which of the demon lords was looking at her, or even worse which realm she was in. Brittany almost cried out in pain as the demon lord hardened their grip around Brittany's sore jaw. "I really don't know what he see's in this human. Even given his current status, he could still get any demon he wanted. By choosing this human he's not only disgraced himself, he's disgraced the council as well."

"Yes my Lord." the female demon quickly replied. "So, since bringing her to you was such a good thing, surely there will be a reward for this." the demon continued as she hopefully tightened her grip on Brittany's arms.

"Yes I guess you are right. Seeing as how you did bring her to me I will let you leave with your life." the demon lord replied harshly as she yanked Brittany from the female demons grip. At this Brittany winced and gave a little hiss as the female demons claws dug into her arms. "Hmm, can't have you waking up too early now can we." The demon lord struck Brittany on the side of the neck with two fingers. Brittany felt her body began to go limp as she felt the sensation of unconsciousness taking over her again. The demon lord threw Brittany into a chair as she turned around to face the female demon, who was evidently furious at the lord's decision.

"How can you call leaving with my life a reward? Surely someone such as yourself could think of something better than that!" the female demon retorted, allowing her anger to get the better of her.

"Well then, if you don't want to accept that..." the demon lord said slowly. Brittany couldn't make out what happened all she could hear was the female demons screams fill the room. Something warm splashed across Brittany's cheek, something she knew must be blood. "Then I shall take that privilege away from you."

Brittany's last thoughts before she slipped into another deep slumber was ones that she realized she could no longer deny. What have I gotten myself into? There's no telling what this demon will do to me! Alex...why did everything have to happen like this? Do you even care that I'm gone? I won't even pretend and think that things are better this way. How could the fact that I might get eaten be better? Maybe I shouldn't have left, but how could I stay knowing what you said? Alex...I wish you were here.
