Fan Fiction ❯ The Four Lords ❯ Restraints on the Heart ( Chapter 26 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Both Kiba and Brittany exchanged confused looks before the realization of what was happening hit them. Brittany quickly jumped out of the way as the the elves gently lifted Alex onto a makeshift stretcher and started towards the woods. Kiba was grinning ear to ear even though he still had a confused look on his face. Brittany eagerly ran and hugged the pegasus neck before following the elves. The pegasus shook its mane as Brittany waved back to it before disappearing into the thick forest.
Brittany was amazed at all she saw in this small world. So many creatures and plants she had never seen before, and never thought existed were all around her. She wasn’t sure but she could’ve sworn she saw a fairy or possibly even a sprite peeking out at her from behind one of the tree’s. She was so wrapped up in examining every little thing that she didn’t hear Kiba walk up behind her.
“Take care lass. Just because they are going to take care of the Lord does not mean that they are our friends. I’m sure Rire has an ulterior motive for what he is doing. I highly doubt it is out of the kindness of his heart.” Kiba said softly as he looked up ahead towards Rire. As if Rire could hear Kiba’s words he looked back towards them and glared at Kiba. “Just be careful lass.”
What’s got Kiba so spooked? What is it about these guys that makes him so on edge? This place is awesome! Why can’t he just enjoy being here, I mean Alex is going to be okay and there’s no way that Zanatos or Celine can get in here, everything’s going to work out just fine. Brittany thought, smiling beneath her restraint. Hopefully when Alex gets better he can get this damn thing off of me, and then maybe we could walk around here together. He said he might take me here sometime, and even though he didn’t exactly mean under these circumstances, I’m going to try and convince him to show me around this place.
After walking in silence for a while they finally came to a small village with numerous wooden huts and large fields with thriving vegetables. The elves who lived there stared at the new comers with weary eyes. Many of the older elves told their children to go inside when the elves passed carrying Alex’s body. Rire looked grim faced as he assured the elves that everything would be okay. Even though the elves looked with interest at Alex and Brittany their eyes fell and stayed upon Kiba who seemed to shrink into the background beneath their stares. Brittany noticed his grim expression and quickly grabbed his hand, as Kiba looked up in shock as Brittany pulled him along quickly into the hut that the elves had taken Alex into. Kiba looked relived as he sat down in the secluded hut and watched as the elves began putting ointment and cloths on Alex’s wounds. Brittany never took her eyes off of Alex until the elves had finished doctoring his wounds. After they had finished Rire came in and looked at Brittany and Kiba and sighed softly.
“You may stay here until he is well. You may go anywhere inside the village but I must ask you not to leave the village incase you were to disturb any of the creatures inside of here. If you are hungry I shall have food brought to you along with some mats to sleep upon.” Rire then looked at Brittany as his expression softened a bit. “I’m afraid that you won’t be able to eat until the Lord is better. Are magic cannot remove that restraint, and Kiba’s strength would only hurt you. I assure you however, that the Lord’s recovery should be swift.”
Brittany nodded at Rire’s unusual show of emotion already knowing what he was telling her. Rire looked at Kiba before turning to leave. “Kiba, I would like to have a word with you in private.”
“Anything you can tell to me you can say in front of the lass.” Kiba replied. Rire nodded as he bowed slightly towards Kiba.
“I wanted to apologize for my actions earlier. We have learned not to trust people, even those who we once allied ourselves with. It is no excuse for the way I treated you, but I am sorry none the less.” Rire said not quit looking at Kiba as he was looking at the area around Kiba. “I would however, prefer to talk to you about an incident involving the wraiths return and I’d rather not bother the girl with such unpleasantries.”
Brittany looked at Kiba, half expecting him to tell Rire that she had seen enough unpleasantries to last her a lifetime. He instead however, nodded as he started to stand up. He smiled a weak smile towards Brittany as he rested his hand on her head. “I’ll be back lass. Make sure the Lord doesn’t start casting magic in his sleep, otherwise we really will be in trouble.”
Brittany didn’t know why Kiba seemed so sad as he followed Rire out of the hut, but before she could ponder it much longer she heard Alex gasping for breath as he coughed up more blood. Brittany quickly rushed to his side as she took one of the clothes and wiped his mouth. She rested against the wall as she propped Alex’s back against her chest so that she could elevate him so that he could breathe better. In a matter of minutes he resumed his restful sleep, and Brittany was plagued by more unanswered questions.
It seems as if the longer I’m here the more mysteries I seem to find. Instead of finding more answers to the questions I already have I seem to be uncovering more secrets hiding on the tips of the forest edge. There’s something that Kiba’s not telling me, some reason he doesn’t like these elves. Also I feel as if there’s something about Kiba that he’s not telling me; of course everyone has there secrets, but I think that this one is a big one. Not to mention I still know very little about you now don’t I? Brittany thought as she looked down at Alex’s pale face. Brittany smiled beneath her restraint at how peaceful he looked and at how even in his painful sleep he was smiling. You my dear are the greatest mystery of all. How am I going to unravel your past and find out the truth about you without dredging up painful memories. I know that everyone knows more than they’re letting on, maybe I can get one of them to talk. Aurora told me only a little about your past. About how you used to be the Lord of the south’s greatest general, but then one day you betrayed him and killed him. I’m not sure wether your intentions were good or not for killing him, but I can’t get mad at you for killing someone that was friends with Zanatos and Celine...just the thought of them sends shivers down my spine. One day, one day soon, I want you to tell me everything. For now, I’m just content being able to see you, and to finally know that I am safe. I hope that you feel the same about me. I can’t deny it anymore I love you Alex, and I don’t want to live without you. One day I will know you as you know me. Then, maybe you will show me the real you and I will know how you truly feel about me. Brittany thought as she closed her eyes and rested her head on his shoulder. She soon felt sleep begin to take over her as fell into a deep and long awaited slumber.

Kiba came in much later as darkness was beginning to descend. He waited for his eyes to become adjusted to the darkness before moving. He looked around the room trying to find Brittany, it wasn’t until he looked over at Alex that he saw where she was. Kiba, despite the sorrows that burdened him, couldn’t help but smile as he looked at the pair. Both of them looked content as they slept side by side.
“Lass, what am I going to do with you?” Kiba said softly with a hint of a smile. “Even though you have every right to hate the man you now sleep with, you show him love. I know now that you are what keeps him alive and strong. Without you lass he would be nothing, you are his strength. He loves you, even if he won’t admit it, you can tell. He needs you as much as you need him. A love such as yours is hard to come by, treasure it.”
Kiba then eased himself against the adjacent wall as he stared at the two in the darkened room. His smile left his face as his eyes became clouded with dark memories of the past. “Aye, you should treasure it while you can.” With those foreboding words Kiba relaxed himself, unsure of wether or not he could sleep with so many memories plaguing his thoughts. It seems like only yesterday yet its been nearly a lifetime. If I had known that doing what I did would lead me down the path that I now tread...I’m not sure that I can honestly say that I would like to change the past. I miss you, that you know, but there’s something about this Lord, something I can’t shake. He reminds me a lot of the original Lord, but in other ways, he’s the complete opposite. I see him changing everyday though, and it’s all because of the lass. When I knew him first, he was serious, cautious, and quiet. He never cared about anyone but himself until that girl entered his life. She is his life, just as you were mine. I’m being selfish, but wait for me a little longer. I feel I still have some life left in these old bones and I want to make sure these kids get off to a good start before anything happens to me. Please, just wait a little longer.

Brittany slept late the next morning and didn’t wake until Kiba shook her lightly. “If I were you I’d hurry and get up.” Kiba said with a smirk and mischievous look in his eyes. Brittany stirred slightly as she rubbed the weariness out of her eyes. As she stretched the memories of the previous day came flooding back as she realized Alex was no longer beside her. She looked worried as she glanced at Kiba to see if anything had happened while she had slept.
No, please don’t tell me anything’s happened to Alex. They said he would be okay, please let him be okay. I couldn’t forgive myself if anything happened to him because of me! Brittany thought. Evidently her worried expression was obvious enough as Kiba quickly shook his hands and laughed.
“Don’t worry lass, he’s fine.” Kiba said, laughing even harder as Brittany slumped against the wall as relief over took her. “He’s been moved to a different a hut though so that they could better take care of his wounds. Evidently they were a lot worse or something to that effect because he’s still won’t be able to travel until tomorrow. He is however conscious for the time being and he requested that I bring you to him immediately. So do you want to go see him?”
Brittany looked overjoyed at the news as she jumped up and down excitedly as she urged Kiba to take her to him. Kiba nearly doubled over with laughter at her excitement.
“All right lass, all right, I’ll take you to him.” Kiba said finally. He started outside with Brittany right behind him. She noticed that the elves seemed not to mind them as much today as they had during their previous encounters. In fact, it seemed as if today that they were actually happy to see them. Some of the elves waved and others nodded and smiled at Brittany and Kiba passed. Kiba too seemed to be in a better mood, but Brittany could tell he still had a lot on his mind. Seeing Brittany’s expression at all that had changed Kiba spoke. “It seems that Rire had a meeting last night with the chiefs of the village explaining why we are here, or something to that effect. Either way the rest of them believe that Rire can do no wrong so him bringing us here means that they can trust us. Looks like his status worked for the best after all.”
Brittany nodded in agreement but she could still tell that Kiba felt strong emotions in regards to Rire. The reason for which, Brittany hoped she would soon find out. Brittany found herself standing in front of an impressive looking building that she hadn’t noticed the night before. It was made entirely of stone and had numerous pillars surrounding it giving it the appearance of a large temple. Kiba led her up the marble steps past numerous elves who gave quick nods as their only acknowledgment that they even noticed them. As soon as they entered the main room Kiba walked past the front part and led Brittany towards the back rooms. He stopped in front of one of the door and smiled as he stepped aside to allow her to go in. Brittany looked up at him confused before Kiba explained.
“He wanted to see only you. I believe there are something’s he wants to talk to you about. Also he wants to get that restraint off of you so that you can eat, or at least that’s the reason he gave me. A bit of advice though lass, I can tell that you don’t harbor and hate towards the Lord, but he can’t. He fears that you hate him for what he said. I want you to know this, the Lord shouldn’t have said what he did, but lass, the Lord cares about you and he didn’t mean a word of what he said. Saying that doesn’t excuse the fact that he still said it, but I believe he was trying to protect you in his own way. Now, regardless of what you feel about him and how he feels about you the Lord won’t show any emotion. He’s missed you more than he’ll let on. He nearly died using a spell trying to find you, you were always on his mind and now that he finally has you back he’s afraid that he might lose you again. He wants to be with you lass, that is painfully obvious, but the Lord doesn’t give into his desires that easily especially if he thinks you hate him. So if he acts cold and distant towards you child, don’t think badly of him because he doesn’t want to do anything or say anything if you’ll hate him for saying it.”
Brittany stared at Kiba with eyes that told him that she already knew what he was telling her. She shook her head softly and hugged him quickly before turning towards the door. I know Kiba...I know. Regardless, there’s something I have to do, something that I don’t care what anyone says I’ve been longing to do. Maybe just maybe it will give Alex the answer he is searching for. With that thought Brittany grabbed the handle on the door and slowly turned it as she cracked the door opened and peered inside. She saw Alex still covered mostly in bandages sitting up, propped up against the wall with his eyes closed. He instantly opened his eyes and looked at Brittany the moment that she stepped inside the room. Alex’s eyes lit up when he saw her, but that light faded as a dark cloud seemed to pass over him, reminding him of everything that happened. He quickly looked away from Brittany, as if afraid that if he looked at her any longer he might do something he would regret. Brittany slowly walked towards him an kneeled by his side as she lifted his chin up to look at her.
Alex why do you torture yourself so? For someone wise beyond their years your blind when it comes to things that are right in front of you. After all that’s happened I know you love me, why can’t you see that I love you? Brittany thought as her eye’s penetrated deep into Alex’s heart. Alex smiled softly at her, the guilt and shame spreading itself over his normally handsome features. His eyes, which usually were deep and seemed to see through a person’s soul now seemed lifeless and hollow as he gazed upon her. Finally after a moment of silence Alex spoke.
“I wanted to make sure you were okay.” Alex said softly as he looked away from Brittany once again. “Also I need to take that restraint off of so that you will be able to eat. If you will sit still I shall gladly take it off for you.”
Brittany nodded quickly as she repositioned herself so that she would be more comfortable and awaited whatever Alex had to do to get the restraint off. Alex sighed softly as he looked at her. Brittany thought it seemed as if Alex was slowly dying inside every time he looked at her. It was as if each time he wanted to hold her had to remind himself that she was no longer his to hold.
Just as soon as you get this damn thing off I’ll be able to tell you how I feel. Maybe then you’ll be able to look at me like you used to. I know you didn’t mean what you said and right now I could honestly care less why you did. All I want right now if to hear you tell me that you love me and mean it...that’s all I’ve ever wanted to hear. Brittany thought as she waited in anticipation for Alex to take off her restraint. She silently thought about everything she would say to him the moment it was off and how he would react. It was a few moments later that she realized Alex hadn’t moved to take off her restraint. Brittany grabbed his hand and tilted her head so that she could look at him. Alex had tilted his head forward so that his long white hair covered his eyes making it to where Brittany couldn’t see his face. When Brittany went to move the hair out of his eyes Alex grabbed her hand.
“Stop.” Alex said softly. Alex held her hand against his chest as he breathed deeply. Finally he released her hand and in one fluid motion wiped the hair out of his face as he smiled at her. Brittany was shocked to realize that Alex had been crying, judging by the redness of his eyes as how wet his cheeks were.
You can’t fool me that easily mister. Brittany thought as she looked at him. That smile is nothing more than another mask to hide behind so you don’t have to feel or talk about what’s really on your mind. Do you really think you can fool me so easily? Those tears you cried were because you can’t tell me exactly what you want to because you believe I’m mad at you. How could you be so blind?
Brittany was amazed at all she saw in this small world. So many creatures and plants she had never seen before, and never thought existed were all around her.
