Brittany exited the room smiling brightly and humming softly to herself. She ran quickly to hug Kiba who looked at her with surprise.

“Well lass, judging by the way you to were talking I’d think you to were back together.” Kiba said with a smile.

“Yes! Or at least I hope so. All I know is that everything right now is perfect. I’m just going to grab me something to eat then I’m going back and talking to Alex. We have a lot to catch up on and I want to ask him if he thinks he’ll be able to take me for a walk through the area tomorrow before we leave.” Brittany said quickly as she turned and looked down the hallways. “Which room has the food in it?”

“Heh, here let me show you lass.” Kiba said as he led Brittany towards the meal hall. A few minutes later Brittany returned to Alex’s room carrying a tray full of food. She looked around the room, excited by the fact that her and him were finally alone, it was then that she found Alex laying on the floor sound asleep on his mattress.

“I guess he was more tired than he lot on.” Brittany said, slightly disappointed that she couldn’t talk to him. “He needs to rest anyway, so I really can’t complain.” Brittany sat down next to Alex and silently ate as her mind wandered about all the mysteries that seemed to surround Alex and his past. After Brittany finished her meal she looked around the room noting that it was a sparsely decorated room with minimal furniture. The only thing out of place in the room was a bundle of black clothes caked in blood. Alex’s clothes, I guess I’d better wash them before tomorrow comes. Brittany thought as she bundled up the clothes in her arms. She walked over to Alex bent down and kissed him lightly on the lips before leaving. She headed out the door, not seeing Kiba she headed to the front of the building trying to find a place to wash Alex’s clothes. Let’s see, of course this place doesn’t have a washing machine, so that means I’ll have to wash these in a river. I remember seeing one on the way into the village no too far from here. I’d better hurry though so I can get back before it gets dark.

With that Brittany hurried along and headed towards the river. Once there she examined Alex’s clothes intensely. “Hmm, that’s weird, for all the blood on his clothes he doesn’t have a single cut anywhere on his uniform.”

“That is because those are made of a special fabric.” A voice responded from behind her. Brittany quickly turned to see and elf walking to the side of her with a bow in hand and a quiver full of arrows attached to his back. He had short spiky blonde hair and golden eyes. Without looking in Brittany’s direction he drew an arrow from his quiver and placed it in his bow. In a fluid motion he drew the bow back and launched the arrow across the river, hitting a target across the bank.

“Wow, you’re pretty good with that.” Brittany said, impressed with his skill. “You were one of the people who was with Rire at the barrier weren’t you?”

“Yes.” the elf replied still concentrating on his archery. Brittany started washing Alex’s clothes as she tried to talk to the elf.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your name?” Brittany asked.

“Eltrio.” the elf replied still trying his best to ignore Brittany.

“Ah okay, well my name’s Brittany. Why are you practicing so much with your bow? Its obvious that you’re already very skilled with it.” Brittany replied casually.

“So that I will be able to kill any demon that crosses my path.” Eltrio said coldly putting emphasis on the word demon as he reloaded his bow.

“Why do you hate all demons? Not all demons are as evil as Zanatos.” Brittany said instantly becoming defensive over Eltrio’s words. Eltrio stopped in mid draw and actually chuckled as he looked at Brittany.

“I’m guessing your talking about the Lord.” Eltrio guessed with a weird look on his face.

“Well yeah. Alex isn’t as bad as everyone thinks he is.” Brittany stated. “He’s actually very sweet.” Eltrio broke out into laughter after hearing this as he put his arrow back in his quiver and turned to face Brittany. “What’s so funny?”

“Nothing, its just the way you stick up for him when you don’t have to.” Eltrio replied with a smile.

“What do you mean? You were just saying that you wanted to kill all demons! So why shouldn’t I defend Alex when you say that?” Brittany asked.

“Because I know the Lord is different from the rest.” Eltrio said as his face became serious. “I do not doubt his intentions, nor do I question his actions. He is one of the few demons that has the trust of the elves. We also trust the other Lord, although not as much due to the past, but still if he serves the Lord then he must be trustworthy.”

“What other Lord?” Brittany asked. “What other demon lord could you trust?”

“Oh, he is not a demon lord.” Eltrio corrected quickly. “Kiba, I take it, has never told you of his past. It is not my place to tell you then, if you want to know of which I speak you should ask him.”

“Wait, Kiba was a demon lord?” Brittany asked even more confused.
“No, I already told you he wasn’t a demon lord. He was a different type of Lord, but regardless it is not my place to tell you anymore. It is getting late, you should head back to the village soon.” Eltrio said as he turned to leave. “Do not stay out here too late. The Lord would have all our heads if anything happened to his mate.”

Brittany blushed slightly, knowing that what Eltrio said was true about Alex. Still Brittany realized that she had to ask Alex if he knew what Eltrio was talking about. Just as soon as she finished washing Alex’s clothes she hurried back to the village and ran to his room.

Alex was awake when Brittany entered and smiled brightly when she sat down his clothes and ran to hug him.

“I was starting to get worried about you.” Alex said as he lifted Brittany’s chin and pulled her into a deep kiss.

“I know I was out washing your clothes for tomorrow. Sorry it took me so long, but I have something I need to ask you.” Brittany said getting straight to the point. Alex could see the determination in Brittany’s face as smiled gently at her.

“What is it that you want to know?” Alex asked.

“One of the elves told me that Kiba used to be a Lord and I have a feeling that whatever happened in the past is why he seems to hate the elves so much. I want to know what happened and why is it that he has such a grudge against them?” Brittany asked blurting everything out at once.

“I know that you want to know this, but this is something I cannot tell you. Just as Kiba cannot tell you about my past, I cannot tell you about his. If you want to know so badly about his past you’ll have to ask him for yourself.” Alex said softly never taking his eyes off of Brittany. “If you want to talk to him he’s outside in the back portion of this building. Know this, if he doesn’t want to talk about it don’t pressure him. Just as my past is filled with things I’d rather not remember his past is also haunted with ghosts from the past and some memories might be very painful for him.”

These thoughts had never crossed Brittany’s mind before, and seeing how serious Alex was about this made her doubt wether or not she should really ask him. “Do you think I should Alex? I don’t want to make him upset.” Brittany said.

“Do what you want to, but I believe that he would tell you if you asked him.” Alex said with a mischievous look in his eyes.

“Why? What do you know that I don’t?” Brittany asked.

“A lot of things.” Alex replied matter of factly. “Now, if you want to ask him now is the time.” Brittany nodded as she stood to leave. Alex held onto her hand and stood up as she turned to look at him. Alex wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a deep kiss before whispering. “The past is a ghost that haunts you from the moment it exists, till the moment you don’t. Just as I know you, you shall come to know me. One day you will know everything about me, but for now please be content with the fact of knowing that I do love you.” Tears came to Brittany’s eyes at how serious Alex was being. She slowly traced his lips before kissing him again and turning to leave.

“I am. I love you Alex and I’m glad that you came back for me.” Brittany said as she exited the door and went to find Kiba.

“I will always be there when you need me.” Alex said softly as he sat back down and leaned his head against the wall. “Kiba...just what will you tell her?”

* * * * * * * *

Brittany walked outside and towards the courtyard as she searched for any sign of Kiba. When she finally managed to find him, Kiba was sitting beside a water fountain listening to the rushing water as he stared up at the now full moon. Kiba was deep in thought, his faced etched with sadness that seemed as deep and foreboding as the secrets surrounding Alex’s heart. I can’t do this. I can’t pry into his past like this. If he didn’t tell me there’s got to be a reason. Alex was right, I shouldn’t awaken dormant pain. Brittany turned to leave but Kiba spoke to her before she could.

“You don’t have to leave lass. I have a feeling I know why you are here.” Kiba said softly never once taking his eyes off of the moon. Kiba patted the area beside him and gestured for Brittany to sit. “Come lass, what is it that you want of me this night?”

Brittany hesitantly sat beside Kiba as she held her breath deciding what she should say. Finally she decided that after all the mysteries surrounding those she cared about the least she could do was ask. If the past is too painful for him then I won’t push it, but I have to at least try. Maybe if he reveals his past I will better be able to understand Alex’s as well.

“Kiba, an elf by the name of Eltrio spoke to me today. He revealed to me something that I had never known before, he told me that you were once a Lord. It seems as if there is some tension between you and Rire, I’m not sure what it is, and its probably not my place to know, but if you don’t mind...I would like to understand some of this better. It seems the longer I stay here the more mysteries I uncover and I haven’t even found the answers to my first question! I still don’t know anything about Alex’s past, I know there’s more than he’s telling me, but I don’t know what. Maybe if I knew more about those who are close to him then I could better understand him in the process. Kiba, your like a father to him I see it in the way he looks up to you, even if he doesn’t admit, you are the closest thing to a friend that Alex would even begin to have. I know I am being selfish in requesting this of you, but please I need to know what Eltrio meant by saying what he did.” Brittany said releasing all her breath at once as she looked hopefully at Kiba. Kiba’s eyes darkened at Brittany’s words, and Brittany was convinced that she had already overstepped her bounds and was already preparing to tell Kiba she was sorry when he looked at her.

“You are right lass, you do need to know the truth. I’m surprised the Lord didn’t tell you himself though.” Kiba replied, still deep in thought.

“He said that he it wasn’t his place to. He said that just as you cannot tell me about his past, he doesn’t have the right to tell me about yours.” Brittany said with a small smile.

“The Lord said that?” Kiba asked losing his focus and staring at Brittany with awe that Alex would say such a thing.

“He did. I believe its because he knows about your past and he knows how it feels to be haunted by your past. That is the reason he told me to ask you personally.” Brittany admitted.

“Aye lass, I believe you are correct. Fine then, I shall tell you what few alive today remember.” Kiba said after a moment. “I will tell you the reason, and the story behind me giving up my title to become the Lord’s servant.” Brittany listened intently as Kiba closed his eyes and breathed deeply before starting his story.

“As you know lass back during the great war all the demons, elves, creatures, and humans fought against the power of Scion. All of us were working together, bound by the pact we had made with original demon Lord to fight together and to serve him for as long as there was breath in our bodies. After his death and the new Lords took their places those who once fought side by side separated and forgot the sacred pact that was made. Back when the original demon Lord lived, even though he was the ruler of all there were also separate Lord’s who tended and watched over their own kind. I was the Lord of the wolf demons, just as Rire was the Lord of the elves.”

“Wow, so you were the Lord over pretty much everyone in Alex’s castle right? I mean, what happened that made you give it up? Did Zanatos forbid it or what?” Brittany asked her eyes glistening with excitement as she listened intently for Kiba’s answer.

“Aye, it was something like that. After the war the realm was thrown into chaos, and everyone was still mourning the death of the Lord so that no one really noticed what was happening at the time. While we were recovering from the loss of both our Lord and all the casualties resulting in the war, the four Lords were slowly tightening their control of us. I guess I was the first one to realize this because the wolf demons didn’t have to rebuild or reconstruct like the others did. We lived in the caves along the border of the southern realm at the time. Still, it took me along time to finally realize what was happening, the four Lords were corrupting what the original demon Lord’s legacy. They started ruling by fear and power. It was either obey them, or die.”

“That’s horrible!” Brittany exclaimed. “I can’t say I’m surprised seeing how they act now, but still you’d think they’d have some compassion after their Lord just died.”
Kiba smiled softly as he nodded. “True lass, very true. Still it was at this time that I started questioning the new Lord’s judgement. I requested council with the Lord of the south to speak with him about all that was happening. When he refused I began openly criticizing the way the new Lords were handling things. I had spoken to other demon Lord’s about the matter and they started to agree with me. We took our case to the council and it was then that the Lord of the north said that we aren’t Lords and therefore have no say in the matter. He stripped us of our titles as if it was nothing and turned his back on us saying that we shouldn’t discuss this further or the consequence would be dire.” Kiba said as he shook his head. “Needless to say I didn’t listen. I continued questioning the Lord’s judgement and when the Lord of the north found out, he sought retribution. He came to the caves where we lived and started a massacre. The wolf demons, were once the most populated breed of demon, but the Lord of the north almost killed us to extinction. We were strong, but we were no match for his power. I called upon the old pact, begging the elves for help, but Rire refused. He told me that this was not his battle, therefore he wouldn’t interfere. I tried to explain to him that as soon as he finished with us it wouldn’t be long before he turned his eyes on everyone else. Rire didn’t believe me, but sure enough it wasn’t long afterwards that the Lord of the north wanted to gain all the magical powers from the elves and began capturing them. He killed anyone that got in his way, until your mate stood up to him.”

“What do you mean?” Brittany asked, becoming more intrigued by the mention of Alex’s name.

“There were very few of us left, those remaining were forced to separate for a better chance of survival. My group happened to find itself face to face with the Lord of the south’s first battalion. Their leader was feared throughout the land and was known as the Death God, because no one who saw his demonic form lived to tell about it. To be completely honest lass I’ve never seen the Lord’s demon form. The only one’s that have were his teammates and his Lord. I remember when I first saw him I was shocked to see that he looked almost like a human, even though he was surrounded by demons I could sense his power, it was overwhelming.”
