[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Kiba ran through the woods followed by seven wolf demons. The jumped from tree to tree racing along as fast as they could. “Shadow, Aurora, make sure to keep a look out for anything. There’s no telling what they have planned for us.”
“You worry too much my Lord. They won’t be able to catch up to us now.” Aurora said with a hopeful grin.
“Let’s hope your right.” Shadow added ruefully. Suddenly Kiba skidded to a halt as the demons behind him did also. They found themselves in a meadow starring face to face with four demons and at what first glance appeared to be a human. The human smirked as he eyed the wolf demons with interest. He had short white hair and pale blue eyes. He wore a short sleeve shirt covered with a black breast plate. His black pants were covered by armor as were his arms, all of which bore the symbol of the Lord of the southern realm, a red chimera.
“Why are you in such a hurry my Lord?” the human asked.
“Did the Lord of the south send you here to kill us?” Kiba asked with a growl getting ready to attack.
“If he did, you’d already be dead.” the human replied calmly. “I am Kane, leader of the southern Lord’s first battalion, maybe you’ve heard of me.”
Kiba took a step back in shock as he stared at the person he had mistaken for a human. “Y-you mean you’re the Death God?” Kiba asked.
“Heh, I really don’t like that name. If you choose to call me anything call me Kane.” Kane said.
“But I thought only demon Lord’s could take on human forms, how is it possible for you to do this also?” Kiba asked, still suspicious and wondering if it was a trap. Kane smiled as he ran his hand across what looked like a mechanical collar around his neck.
“This collar has a spell around it. I can only transform into my demonic form when my Lord wants me to.” Kane answered. “Now, you never answered my question my Lord. Why are you running?”
Kiba considered the question for a moment before deciding that he wouldn’t gain anything by keeping it a secret. “The Lord of the north, he’s hunting down my kind killing us all. We’ve seemed to have lost him for the time being, but it won’t be long before he catches back up to us.”
“Well, what did you to to invoke his wrath?” Kane asked with an amused expression on his face.
“I spoke out against him taking control like he did. He’s defiling the original Lord’s wishes and destroying the great kingdom that he has built. The Lord of the north knows this is true and is trying to silence me.” Kiba replied truthfully.
“So, in other words, its not your kind that he’s after its you.” Kane said staring Kiba straight in the eyes. “Are you telling me that your letting your own kind be killed so that you may run and hide in fear?”
“Its not like that! We would gladly sacrifice our lives so that our Lord might live, but its gone far beyond that. The Lord of the north wants to eliminate all the wolf demons, not just our Lord.” Shadow argued. Kane’s eyes grew cold as he listened to what they had to say. Before Kane could respond to Shadow’s words a loud roar erupted from the forest soon followed by Zanatos’s voice.
“Good work Kane, I see you have apprehended these wretched creatures.” Zanatos said with a sneer as he gazed at the wolf demons. Kiba glared at Kane with anger.
“You liar! You told me you knew nothing of this!” Kiba yelled. Kane’s face remained an emotionless mask as he turned and looked towards the ground, unable to face Kiba’s anger.
“You were a fool to believe him. Now I will end your wretched race once and for all. I’ve already killed off the others that you left behind, now I will kill you.” Zanatos said evilly.
“No...it can’t be.” Kiba said softly his eyes widening with realization. Kane looked up from the ground to see what was going on. Kiba seemed to pale as Zanatos nodded with satisfaction.
“Oh yes, I found her. I made sure to take my time with her, killing your bitch gave me so much pleasure.” Zanatos said with a laugh. It was Kane’s turn to be shocked as he looked back between Kiba and Zanatos. Kiba was shaking with anger as Aurora and Shadow tried to console him. Kiba shoved them away, his eyes burning with anger as he glared at Zanatos.
“You monster. I’ll kill you for taking her away from me!” Kiba yelled as he charged at Zanatos.
“Such an idiotic old fool.” Zanatos replied as he easily dodged Kiba’s attack and with a swift motion sliced Kiba’s right eye, barely missing taking out his eye completely. Kiba flipped around and was prepared to lunge at Zanatos once again ignoring the blood that was pouring down his face.
“You will pay for taking Celeste away from me!” Kiba yelled in rage, his emotions getting the better of him.
“Evidently I took more from you than you know.” Zanatos replied. “It seems your mate was pregnant with your child, what a shame you’ll never be able to see her.” At these words Kiba froze dead in his tracks as he stared vacantly in to space from shock.
“Celeste...was pregnant.” Kiba muttered softly. In an instant Zanatos lunged at him aiming for a death blow.
“Your emotions will now be the end of you.” Zanatos said with satisfaction as he struck at Kiba. Before the blow hit Zanatos’s arm was stopped by a powerful grip as Kane appeared between Kiba and Zanatos.
“Stop this!” Kane yelled as he released Zanatos’s arm allowing Zanatos to jump back. Something in Kane’s eyes made Zanatos pause before speaking.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Zanatos asked.
“My Lord, you shouldn’t do this! Regardless of what this Lord or his people have done you should not take it out on the people. The Lord is responsible for all that happens, therefore he should be the one to be punished! You should never attack the innocents. You’ve taken this too far!” Kane yelled almost pleadingly.
“Do you dare tell me what to do? You just a mindless warrior, dare tell a demon Lord what he should do.” Zanatos said with contempt.
“I don’t dare tell you what to do, I will however tell you what you should’ve done.” Kane said firmly. “Attacking a man’s family, killing children, that is something a monster does...not a Lord.”
“What would you know about being a Lord?” Zanatos asked. “All your life you’ve been a warrior.”
“I know that if I had to I’d die to protect my men because I’m their leader.” Kane said defiantly.
“Step aside boy, that is an order.” Zanatos said finally realizing that Kane wouldn’t back down.
“No.” Kane said. “You’ve done your damage, now leave. Please my Lord, I do not wish to battle you.”
“You have brought this upon yourself.” Zanatos threatened as he lunged at Kane. Zanatos tried to backhand Kane out of the way but hit nothing but air as Kane easily ducked the attack. With his right arm Zanatos tried to strike at Kane yet before he could Kane had grabbed Zanatos’s right arm with his left hand with his right hand grabbed Zanatos by the throat and pinned him to a tree.
“With all due respect my Lord, this is not your realm. You have no authority or power here. I however, have been given the task of protecting those who reside in here, ths includes the wolf demons. So unless you wish to go against me, I suggest you leave.” Kane said in a voice more sinister than polite causing Zanatos’s eyes to widen in fear. Finally Zanatos nodded as Kane released him. Zanatos didn’t even look back as he headed back through the woods.
“You shall pay for this treachery.” Zanatos said beneath his breath as he left. Kane didn’t pay any attention as he kneeled beside Kiba.
“I am sorry for your lose. If I had known sooner about what was truly going on I would’ve tried to have stopped it sooner.” Kane apologized. “I am sorry my Lord.” Tear fell from Kiba’s cheeks as he looked up at him.
“From this day forward I am no longer a Lord.” Kiba said softly. “Somehow, someone who know’s only how to kill knows more about being a Lord than I shall ever know. You have saved our kind, for that I owe you my eternal gratitude as does every remaining wolf demon who still has breath. From this day forward I pledge my loyalty to you, if ever you shall need it the wolf demons will always be there for you. You are now our Lord.” Kiba bowed before Kane to demonstrate the truth of his words. Without question, Shadow and Aurora, followed by the remaining wolf demons bowed too.
“My Lord, I can’t, I am just a soldier I am not a Lord.” Kane said waving his hands and shaking his head. “You are their Lord, I cannot take that away from you.”
“No, I have nothing left to live for. My mate, my love, she is dead and with her my unborn child.” Kiba replied mournfully.
“Don’t say that until you see it for yourself.” Kane said sternly. “I’m not sure wether what the Lord of the north said was true or not, but regardless I’m going to help you find the remaining wolf demons and ensure that you are escorted safely back to your villages. I doubt that the Lord of the north would give up so easily.”
Kiba, along with everyone else, including Kane’s own men looked shocked at how Kane was acting. “My Lord, are you sure. Don’t you have obligations to the Lord of the south more than to us?” Kiba asked. “We can make it back just fine.”
“I have no doubt about that, but I cannot believe what the Lord of the north has done. I cannot apologize for him, and I surely cannot correct the wrong that he has done, but I can ensure that it will never happen again. If you truly wish for me to be your Lord then so be it, I’m going to help you find your wife.” Kane said with a small smile. “Now, lets get you back home.”

“We searched the entire realm for Celeste, when we finally found her it was just as Zanatos had said. The Lord reunited the remaining wolf demons and did in fact ensure our safety. It turned out that years later it was fortunate for him that he had become our Lord, for when he killed the Lord of the south, his entire army betrayed the Lord and joined the Lord of the north. That is why the wolf demons are the only one’s who make up the Lord’s army and his staff. I pledged my life to him, as did everyone else. The reason me and Rire hold such contempt for each other is because with the elves help, there is a good chance Celeste and many others might have lived. I never forgave him for that betrayal, and he knows what he did was wrong.” Kiba said, concluding his story. Brittany was shocked by all that he had revealed to her and was unsure what to say.
“Kiba...I can’t even begin to imagine, that must’ve been horrible for you.” Brittany said softly.
“Aye, but it is in the past now. Regardless of what you may think lass, I do not regret my decision. Serving the Lord has been one of the best things that has happened to me ever since Celeste’s death. Worrying about him, along with the others makes it seem like I have a family again. In fact, you remind me a lot of Celeste when we were younger. I wish you could’ve met her.” Kiba said wishfully.
“I wish I could have to. I’m sure she was a wonderful person.” Brittany said, truly meaning it.
“Aye, she was.” Kiba replied, once again becoming absorbed in his own thought. Brittany realized it was getting late, and now she had something’s that she wanted to talk to Alex about.
“I’d better head back inside. Alex wanted to talk to me about some stuff, and I want to ask him if he’ll show me around before we leave.” Brittany said knowing that Kiba needed to be alone. She hugged Kiba as she turned to leave. “Thank you Kiba for trusting me with your story. It means a lot that you told me.”
“Think nothing of lass. Take care and tell the Lord thank you. He’ll know what I mean.” Kiba said with a mischievous glint in his eyes. Brittany shook her head playfully as she hurried to go see Alex. Right before she went inside she looked up at the moon as she heard a low, mournful howl coming from behind the building.
“Kiba....” Brittany said softly as tear rolled down her cheek. It seems the more I learn about everyone’s past, the more I learn of the suffering they’ve endured. Is there no one who hasn’t been hurt by the cruelty of these Lords?
“You worry too much my Lord. They won’t be able to catch up to us now.” Aurora said with a hopeful grin.
“Let’s hope your right.” Shadow added ruefully. Suddenly Kiba skidded to a halt as the demons behind him did also.
