Alex raced towards Brittany who smiled brightly as he wrapped his arms around her. “Sorry it took me so long. Are you ready to go?” Alex asked. Brittany nodded with excitement as they started out towards the woods. Alex had already surveyed the grounds and knew just where to take her to show her what she wanted to see. Alex showed her the fairy’s that she had longed to see. They were different from what she had imagined due to the fact that they were much darker looking than what she believed fairy’s were. Alex explained that this was because of being hunted so much that they were not very trusting creatures.
“Still, I thought fairy’s were supposed to be happy magical creatures.” Brittany said shocked by how the fairy’s were acting.
“Well they are very powerful little creatures. There magic is especially strong. Their magic was one of the reason’s that they were hunted. There was once a time that they acted like you believed them to, but that was long ago.” Alex said. Brittany nodded in understanding as she took one last look at the fairy’s before following Alex to another place.
Alex then showed her the mer-people, even though they weren’t anything like she had ever imagined. They gazed at her with interest from beneath the edges of the water. The dark green skin and reptilian appearance with scales and webbed hands of the males was a complete contrast to the more human qualities of the females. Their long hair cascaded along the water as the came to the surface near Brittany. Just as Brittany was about to reach out and touch one of them Alex grabbed her hand to stop her.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Alex warned.
“Why not?” Brittany asked looking back at the mer-people.
“They aren’t like you’ve heard in the human realm.” Alex said. “They aren’t nearly as nice.”
“What do you mean?” Brittany asked confused by Alex’s actions as he pulled her closer to him as he glared at the mer-people causing them to swim back deeper into the water.
“Lets just say they enjoy the taste of human flesh.” Alex said finally as Brittany realized what he meant.
“Oh...and you brought me to see them! I could’ve just been eaten!” Brittany exclaimed as she stepped away from Alex.
“You weren’t about to be eaten. They wouldn’t dare touch you as long as I’m here.” Alex said as he nodded towards the lake. “They’re afraid of me.”
“Do they have a reason to be?” Brittany asked as she brought herself closer to him.
“No, of course not.” Alex replied softly. Brittany closed her eyes as felt Alex wrap his arms around her. She took a deep breath before speaking. “Kiba didn’t tell me the whole truth about what happened...did he?”
Brittany felt Alex stiffen as he looked down at her. “What makes you say that?”
“Because Alex, I’m your mate. I feel every emotion and everything you do, the same way you can feel my emotions. I know that something was troubling you when you spoke to Kiba, afterwards it seemed as if you relaxed a bit. Also, Kiba never finished telling me what happened and wether or not he found Celeste.” Brittany said looking up at Alex. Alex closed his eyes and sighed as he opened them back up.
“We found her.” Alex said, his voice barely audible as his eyes gazed across the lake as if he watching memories pass before his eyes.
“Was she alive?” Brittany asked. She knew the answer before Alex told her, but she had to make sure.
“No.” Alex answered, but something in his voice caught Brittany’s attention. She could tell that there was more to it than he was letting on.
“So Zanatos killed her?” Brittany questioned. Alex hesitated and looked away from Brittany before answering her question.
“Zanatos didn’t kill her, he lied about that.” Alex replied softly.
Brittany’s heart froze as she sensed the ominous tone in Alex’s voice. She looked at him noticing that he wouldn’t look her in the eyes. Brittany felt tears swell up in her eyes as she spoke. “Alex look at me. If Zanatos didn’t kill her...who did?”
“I did.” Alex admitted. He released Brittany as she backed away from him in horror.
“H-how could you?” Brittany asked as she continued to step away from Alex, never once taking her eyes off of him.
“You don’t understand. It’s not what you think. Yes I killed her, but not because I wanted to.” Alex said sadly as he looked up at Brittany. His eyes were full of sadness and remorse yet strangely cold as he relived the scene in his memory.
“How could you! She was Kiba’s life and you killed her!” Brittany screamed. Alex tried to walk over to her, but Brittany kept backing up. Alex’s eyes widened with alarm as he shouted.
“Brittany stop! Don’t move!” Alex ordered as he held out his hands in alarm.
“Don’t touch me! Not until you tell me why in the hell you killed Kiba’s wife! He trusted you and you killed her!” Brittany yelled. When Alex tried to reach out to grab her hand Brittany stepped back once more, this time her foot collided with nothing but air as she fell backwards into the lake full of mer-people. Brittany screamed as she fell in as water splashed all about her.
“No Brittany!” Alex yelled. Brittany resurfaced above the water as she gasped for air. “Brittany, hurry and swim over here.” Alex ordered as he held out his hand for her to grab. Brittany nodded as she started to swim towards him. Before she made it half way she was suddenly pulled under water.
“Alex!” Brittany yelled before she disappeared beneath the dark waters. Alex could see the glowing eyes of the mer-people as they swarmed around Brittany.
“Shit! God I hate the water.” Alex cursed. Without a second thought Alex jumped into the icy cold water and swam towards Brittany. Brittany was thrashing around underwater as a female mermaid held firmly onto her leg. When Brittany saw Alex swimming towards her she waved desperately towards him trying to reach out to him. Before Alex could get close enough to reach her something rammed into his side sending him reeling away from her. When Alex looked around to see what hit him a pair of glowing eyes met his. Suddenly he was attacked from behind and from the sides as more mermen tried to defeat him. Alex couldn’t move beneath the barrage of attacks, and he soon saw that Brittany had quit struggling and was now floating unconscious as the mermaids started to surround her.
This isn’t good! I can’t match their speed in the water and there’s no way Brittany will last long if I can’t get her some air soon. She’ll last even shorter if I let those damn mermaids get to her. Alex then felt something that he couldn’t quit describe as he looked over towards Brittany. Alex smiled beneath the water as he positioned himself for the next attack. Another merman sent Alex flying as it punched him in the face. This time however Alex was sent closer to Brittany. It was then that he noticed Brittany’s lips moving as her hands began to glow. Perfect. Alex wrapped his arms around Brittany as he began mouthing another spell. Alex then kissed Brittany opening her mouth so that he give her some air just as a small barrier formed around them. Brittany then released lightning from her fingertips, sending electricity throughout most of the lake striking the mer-people surrounding them. As soon as the electricity dispersed Alex dropped his shield and held Brittany close to him as he swam upwards towards the surface. Both of them gasped for air when their heads broke the surface of the water and Alex helped Brittany up to the shore.
“That’s why I was telling you to stop.” Alex gasped as he laid on his back in exhaustion. When he looked back over to Brittany she had a determined look in her eyes as she glared at him.
“Why did you kill her and why didn’t Kiba tell me this?” Brittany asked with defiance.
“Did you ever stop to think it might’ve been too painful for him?” Alex snapped. “The reason he didn’t tell you was because it was something that both me and him didn’t want to remember!” Brittany was shocked by Alex’s outburst but still didn’t back down.
“That still doesn’t excuse what you did.” Brittany argued.
“Its not what you think.” Alex retorted defensively.
“Then tell me what happened!” Brittany yelled. “Everything’s a mystery with you, that’s why I’m so upset! I never know what’s going because you keep everything a damn secret! Its no wonder everyone hates you they can’t get close enough to get to know you! I’m surprised Kiba’s stayed as long as he has knowing that the man who killed his only love was the person he was working for!” Alex looked as if he had been slapped and Brittany instantly regretted what she had just said, but before she could apologize Alex stopped her.
“If you want to know what happened then I will tell you.” Alex said coldly. His eyes were covered by his long hair but Brittany could tell that he was upset. “But when I start I don’t want any interruptions or questions and I never want you to bring this up again, do you understand?”
“Yes.” Brittany said quickly. Alex, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said, but still it’s the truth. You can’t expect everyone to be as understanding as Kiba is. I need to know what happened, I want to be a part of your life, all your life, not just your present.
“Fine.” Alex replied his voice emotionless as he began his story. “As you know, this was the only time Kiba ever called me by my name, or rather what my name used to be. Now that I think back he only really spoke my name once. I followed Kiba and the others to where we believed his wife would be. Sure enough when we finally arrived we found the other wolves. Their bodies were strewn across the meadow, dying the ground red with their blood. All of which had been done recently. Just as I had predicted Zanatos was lying, but he had beaten us to them and took his anger out on them. Even so, he hadn’t gotten Celeste yet, for she wasn’t among the wounded or the dead.”
