Part 2: Tainted Souls
Amara gasped. "It couldn't be..." She shook her head in disbelief. She wasn't dreaming. This was a real angel standing before her. This vibrant young woman dressed in a white gown. She radiated beauty and innocence. A mystical aura surrounded her. Her eyes were filled with love and compassion.
"Do not be alarmed, Amara." The angel replied softly. "I am called Marina and have been your chosen guardian."
"I'm...dead...?" Amara paused. She was numb from shock. "But why? It wasn't my time yet!" She sounded angry now. She sent her an accusing glare.
Marina sighed. This was proving to be difficult as she thought it would be. Amara wasn't the type to be easily dissuaded. Ever since watching her grow up, Amara had built upon layers of mistrust dealing with strangers. She was very cold and distant. It was one of those rare occasions that she lets people into her private life. A person has to be worthy of her trust. She only has a very few close friends in her life.
"Amara, I can understand why you are deeply upset." Marina said reasonably, trying to gauge at her reaction. Amara's face remained impassive. The tension was there. She could sense it. A mix feelings of pain, sadness and uncertainty. "I am not the enemy here. I am truly sorry for what has happened to you." She said sympathetically.
"Save you pitiful excuses for someone else," Amara spat out. Her eyes blazing with intense fury. Her voice was thick with raw emotions. "I spent too many years and made sacrifices. I worked too hard to let this dream slip away. I'm not about to go down because of this incident! If you claimed to be a angel guardian, how could you let this happen?" She demanded.
"Believe me, Amara. I have done what I can do." Marina said tirelessly. "Angels do have certain limits. Life is not about fair games. There is always burden to carry. You follow the same principles and beliefs don't you? Or should I say Sailor Uranus?"
Amara stiffened. She looked away, avoiding Marina's intense gaze. "It was part of my job. It had to be done." She had given her good valid reasons.
"You're not being punished here," Marina said gently, placing a comforting hand on Amara's shoulder. "Fate is never kind to people. It is hard way of life for some others."
Amara had a faraway look in her eyes. "Fate." She muttered. "It brings nothing but injustice and misery into this world. No wonder this whole world is already screwed up. The irony of it all, I've been lured into my death trap. My own twisted fate. The only possibility that I've been avoiding all my life." She said bitterly. She clenched her fist.
"There is always an answer to every prayers." Marina slowly reminded her.
"What good will that do for me?" Amara asked doubtfully.
Marina answered. "You have forgotten that all mortals have been given with a unique gift called free will..."
"I... don't understand...." Amara was confused.
"You've full of doubts and questions in your heart and mind. Your view of the world is a cruel, desolated place." Marina said. "To experience life is at its best..."
"I supposed you already have something in store for me?" Amara mocked her. "Send me to hell for all of my tainted sins?"
"No," Marina said firmly. She had a serious look in her face. "Your destination will be somewhere else. It is up to you to determine the outcome. Remember this, you only will get this chance. Use it wisely. You will not be disappointed."
"I'm always up for a good challenge." Amara said with a self-satisfied grin.
"Your memories will remain intact. I will always be around if you need me..." Marina instructed her. "Trust in yourself, Amara..." Those were her final words. Amara's consciousness drifted....

Duo Maxwell was standing on a hill, surrounded by a junk pile of metals and scraps. Duo's ideal heaven as he jokingly calls it. A life of an Ex-Gundam pilot living in a junkyard. An honest, decent lifestyle by selling recyclable metals to small and big corporations. He was happy with his life. It didn't bother him that he wasn't famous or rich. Life was too damned well good.
A year has passed since the last war ended in AC 196. People had been leading peaceful lives. Thanks to the diligent efforts by the Preventers and Relena's quest for unity. The five former Gundam pilots went on their separate ways and lost contact. Heero vanished without a trace. Quatre took over his father's multi-million dollar business. Trowa was still performing in the circus. Wufei was now part of the Preventers. The last time Duo had seen or heard from his teammates.
He wasn't alone. His best friend and confidante, Hilde was with him. She was more like a sister to him. A family that he never had. They were never romantically link. They always fight like cats and dogs. Duo loved to play practical jokes on her.
"Hey Duo, quit standing there! It's lunch time!" Hilde's voice broke into his thoughts.
"Yes Ma'am!" He saluted her. He was foolishly grinning. He went to his bachelor pad.
"Man, I'm starving! What's for lunch?" Duo asked as he came waltzing right inside the kitchen. Wordlessly, Hilde shoved a box of leftover pizza to him.
"What? Pizza again?" Duo's face fell, slight disappointed.
"Were you expecting something else?" Hilde inquired. "I was too busy. I didn't bother to cook. And besides, it was your turn." Duo noticed there was a small portable computer and notebook on the dining table.
"What are you doing?" Duo curiously asked.
"Budgeting." Hilde simply answered. She was inputting figures into the computer.
"Yuck," Duo made a face. "What for?" He took a seat next to hers.
"Duo, you haven't noticed. We're completely broke." Hilde said plainly. "I don't know how long we're gonna keep this up. Sooner or later, we'll be ended living in the streets."
"Hilde, relax will ya? I have it all covered. Don't you worry that little pretty head of yours." Duo leaned over and patted her head.
"Can you be ever serious for once?" Hilde asked him. "This isn't exactly what I had envision in my future...." She glanced around the shabby room. "I mean, I...." She stopped speaking. She looked down at the floor mournfully.
"Go on," Duo squeezed her hand, encouraging her to speak further.
"I mean, I thought things will be easier once the war was over." Hilde confessed. "I've lost so much during the war. My family and friends that I'd ever cared for. They're all gone. Don't you ever worried what's gonna happen to you in the future? Have hopes or dreams for the future?"
"You made this far. Look how you've became a stronger person. We'll make it through." Duo promised her.
"Thanks Duo." Hilde was feeling a little better now. "I hope so too..."
