Chapter 8

Wufei's New Partnership

To Trowa and Quatre's disbelief Wufei never came home that night, instead

choose to stay at Kyle and Malcom's place. They scrambled for ideas of how to make Wufei more comfortable in their house and ways to prove that they truly did love him. After all they were doing such a great job of it up till now. They spent the rest of the weekend pouring over ideas, going so far as to call in Catherine and all of Quatre's sisters for ideas. After being completely and (admittedly they needed it) righteously chewed out, the women promised to send them a fax on the best ways to beg forgiveness. Already Quatre and Trowa cringed at some of the choices. Somehow they knew begging butt naked with collars around their necks wouldn't be the best approach. Besides although Wufei would probably get a kick out of them looking incredibly stupid, he wasn't cruel. Hopefully.

Monday dawned bright and clear, a good omen. They should have known better than to think that anything would be that easy. All day they tried to corner Wufei to talk but he was always surrounded by Malcom or some blond guy they never meet. Quatre then got the bright idea to call him; however, he was politely if coldly told to keep calls during the work day professional. During the lunch break, Wufei and his partners disappeared and he didn't answer his cell phone. Trowa went looking for the other pilots to find them gone as well. Finally grumpy and upset they went home after another unsuccessful attempt to locate their wayward roommate.

“Damn it, how the hell are we suppose to apologize if we can't even talk to him?!” Quatre slammed the front door and followed his lover into the living room. To involved with his problems, he never noticed that Trowa stopped dead in his tracks until he plowed straight into his back. “Ouch. Trowa?” Quatre glanced around him and froze. Something was missing from the room. Had they been robbed? He dismissed that as he took in the TV and stereo system still intact. Okay they hadn't been robbed but still something was missing. Right before Trowa sprinted off Quatre figured it out. Wufei's wall hangings were missing.

“Oh no nononononono.” Quatre raced off after him and crashed into Wufei's bedroom. Or what had been Wufei's bedroom. It was empty, completely empty. All of his things, his clothes, his swords, everything was gone. With a sob, Quatre turned on his heel and raced for the phone. Trembling he dialed Wufei's cell and waited impatiently for the call to go through.

“Chang.”

“Wu…Wufei, what's going on?” He stuttered out.

“I figured you two needed time to figure out what problems you two are going through. You two have the most beautiful and faithful relationship I have ever seen and I would hate for you two to break up over some misunderstanding. So whatever is going on between you two, I'm giving you time to figure it out without me around to get in the way. This way you don't have to worry about controlling yourself around me and I don't have to worry about you two fighting anymore. Besides this gives me time to get to know Malcom and so far we're hitting it off. He's a great guy. It's a win win situation. Don't worry though I know you two can overcome anything, just remember to talk to each other and listen too, that's important.”

“No, wait.” Quatre sobbed out, “Wufei come back.” He heard a sigh over the phone and could literally hear his heart breaking. He turned tear-filled eyes to Trowa to find him no better off.

“Not right now Quatre. I want to make sure our friendship can survive this, whatever this is. I think its best that I'm not there. Don't worry you can still talk to me at work although I am no longer working with you guys anymore.”

“What? Where are you going?” Quatre collapsed back into Trowa's arms and cried.

“I have been transferred to a new department with my partner. Don't worry, you can still call me but we just won't be doing any mission together anymore that's all. Don't worry.”

“But…but…”

“Once everything is calmed down I'll introduce you to Malcom again. You'll like him; he is very nice and dependable. Sorry Quatre I have to go now, we're going out to dinner. I talk to you later, good night.”

“Wufei wait!” Quatre yelled, but he was only answered by the dial tone. He stared stunned at the phone, unable to comprehend what just happened. He turned to Trowa and whispered, “He thinks we just wanna be friends and he moved out so we can get our act back together.”

“We'll meet up with him tomorrow and convince him otherwise. Don't worry, I'm not giving up. We'll just have to call Heero and Duo; we might need their help with this.” He ran his fingers through his hair, for the life of him, he couldn't figure out how things got so screwed up. Wufei moving out had never been in their plans and him finding a boyfriend that wasn't one of them certainly was never considered. Damn they really had been moving too slow. Well not any more. Watch out Wufei, we're coming for you.

The next morning Trowa and Quatre got to work early and situated themselves outside of Wufei's new office. They didn't have long to wait as the day shift started in about 5 minutes. They saw he get off the elevator and moved to intercept but stopped as they realized he didn't get off alone. (no pun intended) Quatre pushed aside his jealousy and pasted on a polite smile as Wufei turned and saw the two standing there.

“Good morning Quatre, Trowa. What brings you two over here?” Wufei asked walking over with Kyle and Malcom.

“Good morning Wufei,” Trowa glanced at the other two before ignoring them completely. “We wanted to get to you before you made plans. Would you join us for lunch today?”

Kyle and Malcom shared a look before grinning evilly. Malcom rested his head on Wufei's shoulder while Kyle looped his arm around Wufei's waist, lightly stroking his hip. Wufei turned and quirked an eyebrow but reframed from saying anything. “I'm sorry, but Wufei here has already agreed to dine with us today. Perhaps some other time.” He struggled not to laugh as Trowa and Quatre both looked devastated. He leaned over and gave Wufei a peck on the cheek.

“Now if you would excuse us, we really must get to work. Goodbye.” Plastering a straight face on, Malcom led the group away and into their office. They waited a moment until Quatre and Trowa left before collapsing to the ground laughing.

“Oh god,” Kyle said rolling on the carpet, “did you see their expression?”

“I know,” Malcom wiped the tears off his face, “poor guys just didn't expect that to happen now did they?”

Wufei leaned back against the door catching his breath. “Oh man, to bad but they really need to work their problems out without anyone else there to interfere.” As he leaned back, he missed the look shot between his friends.

“Right,” Kyle said climbing to his feet, “problems.” He reached down for his flushed lover and grinned, “Come on love, time to work now.” Malcom laughed and allowed himself to be assisted to his feet. Even though the assistance brought him in direct contact with very inquisitive lips.

“Hey you two, not in the office.” Wufei mocked glared, grinning as they broke away blushing. A comfortable silence engulfed the friends as they read over old mission reports and Wufei unearthed practice manuals from god knows where for them to review over lunch.

“By the way, where are you taking me for lunch?” Wufei asked, his head buried in a file. The others laughed.

“How about that Italian place on the corner of Main Street and 21st?”

“Sounds great what time should we meet you there?” Three heads turned to find Duo leaning against the door jam, a grin stretched wide across his face. He giggled as Heero pushed past him and grabbed a seat at the couch along the wall, dumping files on the seat next to him.

“Duo its rude to invite yourself to other people's lunch plans.”

“Oh its okay Heero, why don't you two join us?” Kyle said, making notes on the spare notebook by his side.

“Sure don't mind if we do.” Heero said smirking. He settled back and lost himself in his files. Duo rolled his eyes and shoved the files to the other side before plopping down in the recovered spot.

“Its gotten to quite over at our place so we're here to bug ya.” He frowned as Heero placed a file in his lap before going back to his reading. “Sides we need to make a game plan for Operation Barton and Winner discovery.”

“That's a lousy code name.” Duo stuck his tongue out and quickly ducked back with a laugh as Heero made to bite it. “Now shut up and get back to work, we need to get these done before lunch and no I'm not doing your again.”

Grumbling Duo snatched up his file and deliberately turned his back on Heero. A moment later he was reclined against Heero's side and contently reading. Wufei watched his friends with a content smile on his face. He learned how to live life alone but he was learning how much better is was to have friends and how even better it would be to have a lover. He thought back to his old roommates, maybe someday.

Trowa and Quatre fumed all the way through lunch. Both hardly touching their cafeteria food. With a disgusted grunt Trowa grabbed both their trays and throw them into the dirty tray belt. He grabbed Quatre and took off out of the building. Minutes later he hung up the phone and headed for the Italian restaurant down the road. Silently he thanked Heero and they entered the place, eyes sweeping for their prey. Causally they ambled over and tried to appear surprised to find their friends there. Surprisingly it didn't take much to get an offer to join the group. Lunch continued on a high note as Quatre tried to appear friendly to the new faces.

“I am sorry we got off on such a bad foot earlier. Hi I'm Quatre Winner.” Quatre held his hand out and hoped that he was doing the right thing. The last thing he really wanted to do was get all close and cuddly with Wufei's potential flame but… Malcom eyed the hand in front of him for a moment before accepting the offer.

“Malcom Stone at your service.” He hide his grin as a deviously plan popped into his head. He squeezed Kyle's leg with his free hand and hoped he would get the idea. “This is my roommate and co-worker Kyle Jones, I don't believe you've meet.”

Quatre's smile slipped briefly before righting. “N…no I don't believe we have.”

Kyle reached forward and shook hands, grinning as Quatre withdrew his and rubbed the circulation back. He caught on to what his lover was planning and was more than willing to play his part. He leaned back and dropped his arm around Malcom's shoulders, grinning at the understanding look they were now receiving. Now now we can't have that. He casually leaned over and offered Wufei a taste of his meal off the tip of his fork. Oblivious to the play acting out before him, Wufei accepted with a smile and act the food. Heero's face stayed blank only from years of training as both Quatre and Trowa looked devastatingly between the two agents. Round one goes to Malcom and Kyle. Lunch finished up with Heero and Duo questioning the two about their training camp experience as well as to the reason no one else was going. All got a good laugh as the descriptions of destruction and devastation that was describe.

The rest of the day past slowly for Quatre and Trowa. All attempts they made to get Wufei alone failed. One or the other of the two new idiots was always present and Wufei refused to leave his office as he was just starting to understand his new job. And that was another thing, why the hell did Wufei have to get transferred huh? The two idiots could have taken over that job by themselves; they didn't need to drag Wufei along with them. They had hacked the system earlier and had to admit, however grudgingly it was, that the two did at least appear to be good soldiers. Not that they would ever admit it though. Damn how the hell were they going to get Wufei away from them?!
