Chapter 32:
“I’m quite pleased with all of your readings so far.” J announced to the group of recruits. He looked over his notes again. To tell the truth Jason was lacking in more than one field necessary to become a SOPA agent. Nonetheless, he had all he needed to become a mindless guinea pig. “Now, can I offer anyone a second waver on there sentencing?”
As expected, Jason was the first to take the offer. His narrow blue eyes widened at the offer. “What’s the offer?” He asked.
J looked at the pale skinned man with a skeptical glare. “Ah, nothing any of you would be interested in but it is procedure to ask regardless.”
“What is it?” Jacob asked again taking the bait.
J grinned inwardly before offering a friendly smile. “The offer is that you subject yourself to a few tests which will be wavered your sentence by about……fifty to seventy-five years per test.”
“Sounds good to me. Where do I sign?” Jacob asked eagerly. Beside him Xavier rolled his eyes knowing a con when he saw it.
“I’ll stick to the agent gig.” Xavier said. His gaze said clearly that he didn’t trust the older man any further than he could throw him in 35g. J left it at that sparing Jax then Trey then finally Maree a questioning look. All three declined leaving him with only one test rat. No matter. He’d just have to find another means of getting to cooperate.
“Very well, we have a test regimen you must complete in a given amount of time before we send you out on missions with minimal dangers. If you show you can complete these, you’ll be placed on the list of passed recruites and on a mission of your own."
"Oh, goodie." Maree drawled. She had had more than enough of the large white room and the old scientist in front of her. The sooner the test was over, the sooner she could go back to reek havoc on the prison one last time. There was no why in hell she was going to not pass this test. The thought made her skin tingle with excitement. To see something else besides the artificial sky and grass of the prison would be more than welcomed in her eyes.

"This blows." Duo grumbled as he kicked the wall of their cell. He hated being in the room, not because of the lack of light or company but because it made him lose track of time. He didn't know whether it was night or day anymore. His internal clock was pretty much fucked two ways to hell.
"You stated that two minutes ago." Heero drawled looking towards the sound of the braided American's foot hitting the wall. He was just as bad off but was less inclined to voice his displeasures. He merely sat Indian Style on his bed rolling his head slowly in the darkness. "Complaining isn't going to make things go faster."
"Go fuck yourself, Yuy." Duo snapped. Arguing seemed like a good idea right about now. Anything to drown out the irritating silence echoing through the cement block they were in. "Why don't you just admit that this place sucks." He threw up his hands turning in the direction he throught the Japanese teen was.
"Okay, this place sucks. There, you happy?" Heero said monotonously. He glared lazily in the other teen's direction. Despite his talking to the teen, his mind kept going to when he first met Talim. //You're hiding from something whether consciously or unconsciously// Duo's words sounded logical enough. But the question what was he hiding from that was so terrible.
He remembered running that night, through the rain. Yeah, it had been raining that day and he was wearing a pair of jeans and a white button up shirt. His face had been bruised and one of his eyes were swollen for some reason. The streets were dark and littered with homeless people that would ask him for things ranging from food and money to a good time and drugs. He ignored them all and continued on. He had to get away. Away from the memories. And he knew exactly where he could go to get away.
It was a building with warm faces inside of them. Faces that he couldn't remember anymore. They were always smiling, always welcoming him. Especially...he couldn't remember him. All he could recall was the feel of soft hair and the smell of lavender.
He had ran towards that welcoming place then the ground began to shake sending into a wall to his right. The tremor lasted only a few seconds filling the air with the sound of thunder that couldn't be real. They didn't have thunderstorms on the colony. He turned seeing the dark night's sky lit with orange and red that reminded him of the sun setting. Embers rose in the air over it all.
"Are you even listening?"
Heero snapped out of the memory finding a pair of violet eyes inches away from his face. He blinked slowly recalling those eyes on a younger face. Where had he seen it?
"You're not listening. Gosh!" Duo stood throwing his hands up in the air. "I swear, I don't know why I bother..."
"i don't know why I bother, Caron. He doesn't work, clean or even take care of little Heero. Honestly, he's just a deadbeat, but I love him." Heero remembered staring up a woman listening to her talking on the phone with a woman named Caron. She walked quickly across the floor. The agitation she felt echoed through the click of her high heel stilettos. He remembered long creamy legs. Then the door opened.
Heero shook his head quickly. He didn't want to remember anymore. Something told him that what was going to happen next wasn't good. He rubbed at his eyes as if to wipe away the memory. Still he could see the shilouette of a man standing in the doorway. He remembered the angry look in the man's eyes. Quickly, he reached out grabbing whatever he could and held it close. It was warm and smelled of lavender. Silky strands of hair caressed his neck and the side of his face. He inhaled and let it out shakily.
"Heero?" Duo asked uncertanly. One minute he was ranting and letting off steam, the next he was seated in Heero's lap and being held like he was some life size teddy bear. "Heero." He touched the teen's shoulder feeling him inhale and exhale shakily. "Its okay, man. We'll be out of here in no time." He said encouragingly. His hand left Heero's shoulder to rub circles against his back. He slightly rocked his body thus rocking Heero's at the same time. "Its okay, buddy."

"So, how is he coming along?" J asked walking into the completely chrome room. Wires varying in thickness hung from the walls and snaked through the room all coming to one point, a single straightback table similar to the one that Frankenstein laid on held the shuddering form of Quazie. The large man's mouth was wide showing his teeth gritting together. Over his eyes was a single visor that glowed yellow.
"His pulse is still elevated and his brain is threating to hemorhage." The only other occupant of the room reported. He was around the same age as J with a more hunched posture than the other. His hair was cut in a wide mushroom shape and his nose resembled that of a beak. His yellow eyes watched the console carefully. As he spoke, the scar on his cheek writhed and danced.
"Very well, is his system taking the program at all?"
"The Zero System is 15% downloaded so far and seems to going further."
J nodded and checked over the monitors again. "If his brain doesn't collaspe by 30% inform me. I may have a few more 'volunteers'."

Talim shot up in bed again from yet another nightmare. This time, it left him in tears. He felt them running hot down his face. He panted closing his eyes against them.
"Why do you cry so much?"
Talim looked startled towards Shai feeling a wave of shame. Heero was the only one to really see him like this. To have someone else know how mentally unstable and weak he was was unacceptable. Stubbornly, he sniffled and wiped the tears away. "You don't share information and expect me share with you?" He snorted and flopped back onto the bed back facing his roommate.
Shai watched the boy's action in something close to amusement. He'd seen the shame in the boy's eyes and knew it too well. //He's just like me.// He said laying back on to his bed. He'd just closed his eyes when he heard the boy move and get up. It wasn't until the teen's presence was next to his bed when he turned to look back.
"Okay, I figured that I must be waking you up a alot with my nightmares and whatnot so I have a little deal to strike." Talim started. He swallowed hard and pressed forward. "Now don't take this as an invitation to grope me or anything but I sleep better with...people. Its usually people that I know and trust but since I lack that, I'll settle for you."
Shai stared at the boy silently. Was he asking to sleep with him as in just sleep and nothing else?
"You don't have to cuddle up to me or anything. I'll stay on my side and you can stay on yours." Talim paused waiting for an answer. If worse came to worse, he would have to sleep in his own bed, alone. It wasn't something he was too fond of but he was forced to do far more worse things than that.
"Answer a question first." Shai demanded softly. Now that Talim wasn't shaking from the aftermath of a nightmare, he found the soft tenor pleasant. Absently, he registered that the man would've made a good sex phone operator.
"What question?" Talim asked reluctantly. Hopefully it wouldn't be anything that needed a extravogant answer.
"Why do you cry so much?"
"Because I hold a lot of things inside. Or that's what my psychologist told me." Talim said softly. That was all he was willing to tell and he knew it wasn't going to be enough. Meekly, he turned back to his bed. He was stopped by a firm grip around his wrist.
"Get in." Shai said holding up a side of the cover. Talim nodded a little numbly and did just that. He clung to the edge of the bed as he watched the outline of the older man. "Are you going to stare at me all night or are you going to go to bed?"
Talim ducked his head and blushed and let his eyes drift shut. Funny thing was, falling asleep next to the pale blue eyed man was almost too peaceful and easy. The other man felt a smile twitch at the corner of his mouth. He pressed his lips together tightly finding the impulse uncalled for. They were only sleeping and he didn't know the teen enough to really feel anything for him. Soon he too fell asleep.
